I would like to thank everyone who came out to the Triwood and Brent-wood 150th Canada Day Celebration! Congratulations to all the volunteers and staff from both Triwood and Brent-wood who worked hard to make this event such an amazing event.

Triwood Summer Camp is finally here! The Summer Camp themes are Kid’s in the Kitchen, Mini Messy Hands, and All Sorts of Sports. The Summer Camp out-trips include trips to the Zoo, Science Center, Winsport, and the Splash Park! We are so happy that we can offer these camps to the residents of Triwood.

The Triwood Stampede Breakfast is Sunday July 9th from 9am-12pm. We have live entertainment, face painting, Hello Fresh, Q107, line dancers, and many more! This is a free event for the whole family. Please come by have breakfast and enjoy our Stampede entertainment.

The Triwood Farmers Market is every Tuesday from 3pm-7pm. We have over 30 vendors so come by and support our local vendors.

Saving Lives Through Better PredictionsOn July 31, it will be 30 years since a powerful and dam-aging tornado ripped through Edmonton and area. On what became known as Black Friday, 27 people lost their lives, hundreds of homes were destroyed and dam-age totals exceeded $330 million. To this day, quickly darkening clouds on the horizon bring back horrifying memories for thousands of Albertans.

There were seven other tornados in Alberta that sum-mer day. Originally, weather forecasters had warned of unusually severe thunderstorms but the sheer power, size and destruction of the weather to come was not known. Enhanced warnings of tornados went out when the first one was spotted near Leduc but for many that was too late.

The federal government has invested substantially over the years to upgrade radars, upgrade satellites and the computer systems behind them. In the 30 years since, weather forecasting has improved by leaps and bounds and our ability to share critical weather warnings is un-matched in our history. New computer models can now more accurately forecast the weather and even predict tornados and their probable paths in advance. We now have accurate lightening, wind-chill, humidex, pollen, ice and other types of forecasting that did not exist just a few years ago. For some areas, weather forecasting is now available for different neighborhoods within the city.

While we all can remember a day when the forecast was wrong, and we like to curse the ‘weatherman’, we take for granted how accurate the forecasts generally are. Accurate weather forecasting is a critical part of our economy as it helps farmers, mariners, pilots, construc-tion crews and the general public make important and life-saving decisions ahead of time.

Canadians now have the ability to track weather through radio, television, computers and various other methods. The ability to send weather warnings to people via their televisions, computers and smartphones has saved lives

and property across Canada. As we head into the severe summer weather season, Canadians are encouraged to consult the weather on a regular basis, especially if they plan activities outside or may not have easy access to safe cover from the weather. There are a number of free weather alerts available through weather forecast-ing websites, including Environment Canada at www.weather.gc.ca.

Those who take risks with the weather should realize they often put their lives, their loved ones’ lives and the lives of emergency workers at risk unnecessarily. As the saying goes, “If it is predictable, it’s preventable”. Let’s have a great summer and thank those who work invis-ibly behind the scenes to ensure we have a safe sum-mer, no matter what the forecast may be.

This July 1st, we celebrate the 150th birthday of this great country. This year Canada Day falls on a Saturday, and there will be a huge range of events for people to at-tend throughout Calgary. The city is predicting 250,000 people will turn out for the celebrations, so I encourage people to be prepared by bringing a hat, sunscreen and water. To top it all off, there will be a 30 minute fireworks and light show on the river front downtown.

On June 30th, Triwood and Brentwood will be hosting a Canada BBQ for the country’s 150th birthday. The BBQ starts at 5pm, will have live music, and fireworks at 10:30pm. The event is at the Triwood Arena, and is no charge, but RSVPs are requested.

The busy spring legislative session is now over. We’ve worked hard to bring in programs to make life more af-fordable for everyday Albertans, by capping electricity prices, reducing school fees and keeping taxes on fam-ilies the lowest in Canada. Our government has just an-nounced a $20 million playground grants program for K-6 schools to reduce the fundraising burden on fam-ilies. New and replacement K-6 schools announced be-tween 2014 and 2018 will get $250,000 grants to build a playground. We know that playgrounds not only benefit the students who get to use them, but they serve the community as a whole. They are hubs where parents and children meet and play together. If a community wants to upgrade or replace an existing playground,

they are able to apply for the Community Facility En-hancement Program grant offered through Culture and Tourism.

Our government is always interested in hearing what Albertans have to say about major public programs. The Spring 2017 survey of the curriculum review wrapped up in June with thousands of responses. Alberta Education will then review the results of the survey and use what they heard to refine their work and help develop learning outcomes in each subject. There will be a Fall 2017 survey announced later in the summer. As the federal government is legalizing cannabis by July 2018, Alberta has to develop a provincial framework to manage it. Until July 31st, Albertans can visit alberta.ca/cannabis to participate in a survey to develop a provincial framework for cannabis legalization.

July 7-16 is Calgary Stampede, so it’s time to break out your cowboy hat, see the parade, and eat free pancakes until you burst! Besides events all over the city, there are several right here in Calgary-Varsity. On July 6th at 5:30pm, Banff Trail is hosting a Stampede BBQ. Triwood Community Association is having their annual pancake breakfast at the Triwood community centre on July 9th from 9am-12pm. Market Mall will have a pancake breakfast from 9-11am on July 11th. And Dalhousie Station Shopping Centre has a pancake breakfast on July 12th from 9-11am. I’m certainly looking forward to the Stampede events here in the constituency. Yahoo!

Green Line LRT and Crowchild Trail UpdatesFor the past several years, Calgarians were engaged ex-tensively on the new Green Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) line and the Crowchild Trail Study. Thank you to Ward 7 residents for engaging on these projects and for help-ing to push for better outcomes.

The Green Line LRT will improve the daily lives of Calgarians. It will connect our communities with high-quality rapid transit, spur reinvestment along Centre Street and around station areas, and act as a catalyst for improved community amenities.

Earlier this year, Council voted to proceed with Stage One of the Green Line LRT, running from 16 Ave N in Crescent Heights/Tuxedo Park to Shepherd in the SE. Stage One includes 20km of track, 14 stations, the Cen-

tre City tunnel, a new maintenance facility at Shepherd, and new low-floor trains. It will carry around 65,000 Cal-garians on day one (in approximately 2026) and comes in at $4.65 billion.

A phased approach allows us to build a solid foundation for continuous expansion, and to ensure we build the Green Line right from the start. We have one of the top performing LRT systems in North America today, and can expect this to continue with the Green Line.

The City of Calgary and the Government of Canada have committed $3 billion to the Green Line. Now, with Stage One set, the City can submit a formal funding applica-tion to the Government of Alberta. If funding, finan-cing, and years of planning align, we will see the start of Green Line construction in 2020.

In May, City Council unanimously approved a new plan for Crowchild Trail. Council praised the work done by City staff and the incredible participation from com-munities. The plan is in stark contrast to the 2012 Crow-child Trail expansion plan that called for the demolition of dozens of homes and restricted access between com-munities.

Proposed changes include new walking/cycling bridges across Crowchild and to the Bow River Pathway, path-ways along Crowchild, safety improvements at conflict points, traffic noise mitigation, and free-flow traffic from Glenmore Trail SW to 12 Mile Coulee Rd NW. Residents along Crowchild now have certainty about whether or not their homes will be impacted.

The Crowchild plan, which includes short, medium and long term improvements, is a massive project that comes at significant cost. While the full plan is not fund-ed, funding is approved to rehabilitate and improve the deteriorating Crowchild Trail Bridge over the Bow River. Funding for the full plan will be reviewed against the City’s other priorities such as flood mitigation, afford-able housing, and, of course, the Green Line LRT.

Hello Calgary-Klein,

Albertans are among the most productive workers in Al-berta, and work some of the longest hours in the coun-try. Yet despite this hard work and long hours, Alberta hadn’t seen significant changes to its labour legislation in 30 years.

That’s why I am proud that Bill 17: the Fair and Family-friendly Workplaces Act is ensuring Alberta has modern and fair labour laws that protect the rights of Albertans. Work is where we spend half (and often more) of our wak-ing hours, so it’s vital that the standards for work meet both the needs of Albertans as well as those of workplaces.

Bill 17 includes a number of important changes. Most importantly, the bill would allow Alberta workers up to five days of job protection a year for personal sickness or short-term care of an immediate family member. It would also allow for 16 weeks of unpaid, job protected leave for long-term illness or injury. I believe that no one should have to lose their job because they get sick, or because they need to care for their loved ones who’ve fallen ill.

Additional changes ensure our laws meet the same standards in place in other provinces and at the federal level, such as maternity leave, parental leave, compas-sionate care leave and bereavement leave. Updates to overtime, vacation pay and termination notice stan-dards are included, as well as a simplification of union certification and decertification processes.

The proposed Employment Standards Code and Labour Relations Code changes are the result of previous gov-ernment reviews, as well as broad consultation with Albertans, employers, business organizations, labour organizations, municipalities, academics and advocacy groups. More than 7,000 submissions were received.

If passed, Bill 17 is expected to come into effect January 1, 2018.
