WELL NEEDED FARM AIDJeff Roberts Toodyay hands over to Rick Storer Koorda, gifts for needy families. Surrounded by members of Men’s Sheds from Toodyay, Koorda, Beacon and Mukinbudin.

SOME couple of months ago Toodyay Men’s Shed became aware of the plight of some farmers and townsfolk in the Eastern Wheatbelt. Due to high costs of production, low farm gate returns compounded by a couple of poor years and in many cases the banks refusing “carry on finance” for this season’s crop.

These folks are doing it real tough. Toodyay Men’s Shed got busy and have put together some Gift Packs that contain enough staples in non perishable foods together with a Pamper Pack for the Lady of the house, all in all over half a tonne of goodies.

On Thursday 25th of July the Men’s Shed has delivered these

Gift Packs to the Koorda Men’s Shed from where they will be distributed to that area and others like it. In handing over the Gift Packs to Rick Storer President of the Koorda Men’s Shed, accompanied by John Smith of the Mukinbudin Men’s Shed and Bruce Ingleton from the Beacon Men’s Shed,

The Chairman of Toodyay Men’s Shed Jeff Roberts said that he pays tribute to the members and their wives who have worked so hard to bring this much needed relief to those in such dire straits. He also paid tribute to the store keepers in Toodyay like Toodyay IGA and the Toodyay OP Shop who have

supported this effort.Mr Roberts also said that he

had the feeling of déjà vu from the end of 2009 and the “Fires” that devastated many homes and properties around Toodyay and the massive assistance afforded by people from the bush to help those in need.

The donations of some of the products in the Gift Packs delivered into Toodyay from the Canning Men’s Shed and the support offered to this initiative by the Western Australian Men’s Shed Association, demonstrates that we have not forgotten those who live in the Regions in this great country of ours.

AdvertisingTo ensure the quality of your newsletter we are still looking for advertisers to help offset the cost to produce it.

If you can help in this regard or know any one who can, please don’t hesitate to give me a call on 94579198 or email ([email protected])

SubmissionsAt the time of writing there were almost

one thousand sheds in Australia that we are aware of and still growing.

I would ask that shed’s that produce a newsletter please include ([email protected]) on your mailing list so I can include some of the things that are going on at your shed in the Warbler.

If possible I need the newsletter in word format and photo’s as jpegs; this would make my life a lot easier.

By John McDougall, Chairman WAMSA

WAMSA Chairman retires

IN the beginning I was propelled by Menshed interests in the country to nominate for the inaugural Board/Committee of WAMSA.

I did this with some reluctance and misgiving. I was further concerned when the total nominations failed to fill the positions available, so WAMSA from day one was undermanned.

I reluctantly accepted the position of Vice President which quickly turned into a position of Interim President after a spate of Leave of Absences and resignations. I became acutely aware that I had inherited a dysfunctional management group that had little or no direction, no money and no staff.

Miraculously we managed to recruit some more management members, find some direction, secure some funding and employ some staff.

If it hadn’t been for the efforts of a couple of colleagues prior to the 2011 Annual General Meeting I went very close to petitioning to wind the whole organisation up.

But thankfully we managed to pull off a successful Annual General Meeting, employed an Executive Officer, recruit some capable Management members, acquire a Patron (visited him at Government House), have top level talks with Worksafe and eventually run a successful Conference at Mosman Park

Prior to the State Election we interacted with all political parties seeking policy.

We have had face to face consultation with the Department of Health and top level discussions with Lottery-west, and our Executive Officer has had interaction with various kindred organisations on our behalf.

What I am about to say has no connection to any member of the Board, the staff or any activity WAMSA has engaged in.

My decision that I am about to announce was made some time ago and has no relationship to anything that has happened recently.

I will not be nominating as a member of the Management Committee at the 2013 Annual General Meeting, so of course I will not be eligible to be your Chairman.

My retirement will take effect at the conclusion of the Annual General Meeting proceedings.

I am advising you of my intentions at this point to give WAMSA the opportunity to make whatever adjustments that are deemed necessary.

My Reasons: Being the Chairman of WAMSA was never something I aspired too. However if I take on something I do it to the best of my ability.

It is now time to direct my energies to other things I have put aside.

Incidentally the Narrogin Mensheds which I chair are going into a major building program and I gave an undertaking that I would see that to its fruition.

can add to the difficulty of maintaining friendships.

Remember that people with dementia retain their feelings and emotions even though they may not understand what is being said, so it is important to always maintain their dignity and self-esteem. Use touch to keep the person’s attention and to communicate feelings of worth and affection.

Talk in a gentle, matter-of-fact way, keep sentences short, focusing on one idea at a time. Allow plenty of time for what you have said to be understood. Silence can give time to think and respond.

Where appropriate, use body

Dealing with Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

SOME sheds may have members who are experiencing the early stages of dementia.

The ability of the person to be able to continue to be involved in shed activities can play a valuable role in maintaining their quality of life and delaying the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

The following has been taken from a series of fact sheets produced by Alzheimer’s Australia, which offers support, information, education and counselling. Contact the National Dementia Helpline on 1800 100 500, or visit the website at www.fightdementia.org.au

How Can Sheds Assist?

Sheds can support the person with dementia to do the kinds of

things that they enjoy doing.Enjoyment does not require

memory, so it is important to remember that even if an activity is soon forgotten it is still worthwhile.

The best way of all to help someone with dementia is to stay interested, stay in touch and let them know that they are valued.

Sheds can also provide support for those providing assistance to a person with dementia. Many studies confirm high rates of depression, anxiety and even physical illness in families where someone has dementia. An outing to the shed provides a welcome respite for the carer.

Losing the ability to communicate can be one of the most frustrating problems for people with dementia, and

language to demonstrate and reinforce your verbal message eg wave when saying goodbye.

A person living with dementia may exhibit aggressive, aggravated and anxious behaviours. This can be the case when a person is unable to communicate their needs, leading to frustration. This can be very disruptive within a shed. The management of sheds are encouraged to explore strategies for managing the behaviour rather than simply banning the person from attending the shed. It might be useful to talk to the person’s family as they may have developed strategies to manage changed behaviours.

These behaviours and tips for handling them are discussed at

http://www.fightdementia.org.au/services/coping-with-behaviour-changes.aspx

When aggressive behaviours occur: • Stay calm. Speak in a calm,

reassuring voice • Address the underlying

feeling if possible • A simple suggestion such

as having a drink together, going for a walk or looking at a magazine together may help. Distraction and avoidance are often the most useful approaches

• If you feel unsafe, stand out of reach. Closing in or trying to restrain the person, unless absolutely necessary, can make matters worse. You may need to leave them until they have calmed down

• If you have developed some strategies for managing aggressive behaviours try to make sure that they are used by any other shed member
