asks Jethro to go in to town to pick up some lumber. Jethro walks

the 5 miles to town to the local

lumberyard.

"Jeb says we're gonna need some 4 x 2's" Jethro tells the yardman.

"Do you mean 2 x 4's?" asks the yardman.

"Well, I don't rightly know, I better go ask Jeb" says Jethro and walks

the 10 miles to the hills and back to town.

"Jeb says we're gonna need 2 x 4's" Jethro tells the yardman.

"Now, how many 2 x 4's will you need?" asks the yardman.

"Well, I don't rightly know, I better go ask Jeb." says Jethro, and

again walks the 10 miles to the hills and back to town.

"Jeb says were gonna need about 40 of 'em" Jethro tells the

yardman.

"Now, how long will you need them?" asks the yardman.

"Well, I don't rightly know, I better go ask Jeb" says Jethro and yet

again walks the 10 miles to the hills and back to town.

Upon returning Jethro says to the yardman, "Jeb says you better

give 'em to us for a while . . . we're gonna build a barn."

MEDIA RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Mosinee and local High School Students get hands on experience at REI Engineering, Inc.

On Wednesday, April 17th

, students from Mosinee and other local High Schools will visit REI

Engineering, Inc. as part of the Careers in Action (CIA) day.

CIA Day is a program designed to give High School students a behind the scenes look at the local

business world. Students can chose from a variety of participating companies based on their future career

aspirations.

At REI Engineering, the students will explore careers in Civil Engineering, Environmental/Safety

Consulting and Land Surveying through a series of breakout sessions that include both discussion

platforms and hands-on experience. The students also have the opportunity to ask REI professionals

about their careers and learn more about local projects.

REI Engineering creates three specific stations for the students to explore. The Civil Engineering

exercise offers insight into the intricate activities involving the designing of an athletic complex. An

exciting hands-on activity exploring the finite capabilities of a Total Station and Global Positioning

System (GPS) unit used by Land Surveyors. Students also participate in an Emergency Spill activity

directed by REI’s Environmental/Safety Team. Dressed in full Tyvec suits, students are given

instructions and participate in activities involved in the clean-up process. For many students, this mock

chemical spill is the highlight of CIA Day.

Secretary Stepp addressesWBA Board of Directors

recently WBa was honored tohave dnr secretary Cathystepp kick off the board ofdirectors meeting in Wisconsinrapids.

also in attendance withsecretary stepp were deputysecretary Matt Moroney, executive assistant scottGunderson and dnr regionaldirector dan Baumann.

the speech and follow up questions with secretarystepp had a “welcome home” feel to it considering inthe late 1990s and early 2000s stepp was a memberof the WBa Board of directors as a builder memberfrom the racine Kenosha Builders association.

secretary stepp highlighted the dnr’s new focus oncustomer service and the results of those efforts seemto be paying dividends by the compliments that weregiven by a number of WBa members who spoke duringthe comment/question and answer period. severalmembers commented that they had received quickerresponses than ever before and more predictabilityfrom the department than ever before.

WBa member comments and those of secretary steppgo back to WBa’s longtime philosophy when it comesto the dnr -- we are not asking the answer to alwaysbe yes but we do expect to know the process andtimeline for when an answer will be arrived upon.

With the leadership of the new dnr headed bysecretary stepp, deputy secretary Mononey, andexecutive assistant scott Gunderson, the dnr hasmade great strides in just over two years of being atthe head of Wisconsin’s largest state agency.

Supreme Court majority in tact

With a resounding victory in early april, Justice patroggensack ensured a conservative majority on theWisconsin supreme Court.

this year’s Wisconsin supreme Court never reallycaught fire like the prosser-Kloppenberg race of 2011.that race is widely seen as the most political of recentWisconsin supreme Court races due to it being in themiddle of the capitol protests and can really be seen inthe most popular slogan the left used in the race, “aVote for prosser is a Vote for Walker.”

there will be a very important election in the fall of2014 with Governor Walker, attorney General Vanhollen, all members of the state assembly and half ofthe state senate up for re-election.

looking one step ahead to the next Wisconsinsupreme Court race will be in 2015 with currentJustice ann Walsh Bradley up for another ten-yearterm. if conservative powers to be can find an a pluscandidate to run against Bradley this could be a verycompetitive, expensive race in the future.

Who fits the early billing as an a plus candidate? lookno further than a former member of the state assemblyand current Court of appeal Judge Mark d. Gundrum.

Unemployment benefit changes being pushed

recently three state representatives and one statesenator sent a letter to the unemployment insuranceadvisory Council (uiaC) asking for a number ofchanges to be implemented concerning the administra-tion and payment of unemployment benefits inWisconsin.

For many years the unemployment insurance advisoryCouncil housed at the department of Workforcedevelopment (dWd) has been the advisory board thatworks out a deal on unemployment benefits that thentypically get approved by the legislature. the council ismade up of an equal number of labor representativesand business representatives and in the past policieson unemployment were done with all ten members’support.

several of the items mentioned in the letter sentrecently are items that the business side of the uiaChave been advocating for in the past but have not beenapproved by the labor side.

this will be an interesting matter to watch. the uiaCprocess has been in place for a long time in Wisconsinbut you cannot blame the legislators that are pushingfor more changes since they are in the majority partyand have the power to make changes even if one sideof the uiaC object.

nAHB-Supported Bill Will Help Builders ObtainConstruction Loans

Credit is the lifeblood of housing. if builders can't getcredit, they can't build homes, they can't hire workersand they can't stay in business.

this is why it is absolutely vital to get credit pumpingback into the housing sector again. in the currentregulatory climate, lenders have drastically cut back onacquisition, development and construction (ad&C)loans that are necessary to allow builders to constructnew homes.

since the earliest days of the housing downturn, nahBhas worked very closely with concerned lawmakers increating legislation to open up the lines of credit fornew housing production to help spur job growth, support a recovery in the housing market and keep theeconomy moving forward.

at nahB's urging, reps. Gary Miller (r-Calif.) andCarolyn McCarthy (d-n.y.) on March 19 introducedh.r. 1255, the home Construction lending regulatoryimprovement act of 2013. the bipartisan legislationwould address specific regulatory obstacles to thecredit needs of the nation's home builders and isidentical to legislation championed by Miller in theprevious Congress.

"We commend reps. Miller and McCarthy for acting toremove a major impediment to the housing recovery byintroducing legislation that will enable home builders toobtain ad&C loans in order to put construction crewsback to work and to meet rising demand across muchof the nation for new homes," said nahB Chairmanrick Judson.

the bill is a significant advancement in nahB's overallstrategy to help members find the credit they need tomove forward with new or existing projects.

home builders cannot keep their doors open andcreate jobs in their communities if they cannot getcredit to build even pre-sold homes. and when lenderscall in performing loans, everyone suffers. Workers getlaid off, sound projects go uncompleted and banks takepossession of unfinished property.

"in many housing markets where demand is increasingand the supply of new homes remains near record-lows, builders still cannot get the proper financing tomeet the needs of home buyers because creditremains very tight in the aftermath of the housingdownturn," said Judson.

this is hurting job creation and economic activity incountless communities across the land. Building 100single-family homes creates more than 300 full-timejobs and generates $8.9 million in federal, state andlocal tax revenue. that doesn't even count the increasein annual property taxes that cash-strapped state andlocal governments rely on to fund essential services, including jobs for local school teachers, police and firedepartments, and road repairs.

in addressing regulatory areas that have unnecessarilyhampered the flow of credit for new housingproduction, h.r. 1255 would remove barriers tolending while preserving the regulators' ability toassure the safety and soundness of the financialinstitutions they oversee.

gOVERNMENT AFFAIRSthe Government affairs Committee is responsible tokeep the association informed on local, state, andfederal laws that help or hinder the building industry. We also meet with elected officials and advocate onbehalf of our industry. this includes attendance atquarterly WBa meetings and Business day in Madison, which is held in February. right now this is a

committee of one! We’re looking to change that, andare asking for anyone that is interested in the politicalprocess and how it interfaces with the home buildingindustry to let Bob Kulp know, and you can be a part ofthis effort. it doesn’t require a lot of work, but it doesrequire time and a passion for the political process aswell as the building industry.
