3This SHOWCASE presents outstanding views ofAmerican cities and, as usual, an assortment of in-triguing maps. Reflecting the spirit of our current

show, , we include several Ameri-can figures, starting with the portrait on the right. This 1781 mezzotint of George Washington by John

Trumbull, a fine example of an 18th century portrait, shares the page with a c. 1935 ink wash drawing of aplayful boy by Robert Riggs, giving a sense of therange of time and style covered at The Old Print Gal-

lery. Winslow Homer illustrations of 19th centurypeople are seen on pages 14 and 15.

On exhibit at the gallery through November 14th,

is a compendium of “people in

prints” by some of the most celebrated 20th centuryAmerican printmakers. Creating in a time when theart world was pushing towards abstract expressionismand modernism, these print artists stayed rooted in asort of inherent figural humanism. With an exquisiteability to convey emotion through the anatomy of thehuman figure, they used pencils, woodblocks, andburins to capture an arresting gaze, a fleeting momentbetween individuals, people at work, at play, and deepin thought. Seen together, these prints offer a glimpse

of 20th century America, while also reminding viewersof our shared human condition

Also included in this catalog are works from oursummer show, A monotype is made bydrawing or painting a design in printing ink onto anysmooth surface, then covering this matrix with paperand passing it through a press. The result, an exactreverse of the original drawing, is an original andunique monotype. Several striking examples from theshow appear on the final pages.

16. Novae Insulae XXVINova Tabula. (Americas.)Sebastian Munster. Pub-lished by Sebastian Munster,Basel. Woodcut, 1540(1545). Munster's map ofthe New World is one of themost important and influen-tial maps of the 16th centu-ry. It appeared in Munster’sCosmography and is the earli-est to show all of North andSouth America in its truecontinental form. The flagsof Spain (on Puerto Rico)and Portugal (shown in theSouth Atlantic) depict theirrespective spheres of influ-ence. North America is odd-ly shaped and depicts one of

the great geographic misconceptions: In 1523 Giovanni di Verrazano passed by the outer banks of theCarolinas. He mistook Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds for an Oriental Sea that would lead to the SpiceIslands. Munster recorded Verrazano’s accounts in his Cosmography, which propagated the myth formany years. In Mexico, Lake Temistan (not named in this state of the map) empties into the Caribbean. The Yucatan Peninsula is shown as an island. South America is depicted with a large bulge in thenorthwest and notes that cannibals inhabit parts of it. The map is also the first to show Japan, 'Zipangri',based entirely upon the accounts of Marco Polo and other early travelers and is the first map to namethe Pacific Ocean (Mare Pacificum). Shown in the Pacific Ocean is Magellan's ship 'Victoria'. Overall astriking map. The first state of the map was issued in the 1540 and 1542 editions of Munster'sGeographia. This is the rare second state of Munster's map of America. In the second state the title waschanged from "Novae Insulae XVII. . ." to "Novae Insulae XXVI . . ." and appeared in only one edition.Image size 10 x 13 3/8". Very good condition save for some minor splitting along centerfold. Black &white. Burden, The Mapping of North America, 12; Suarez, Shedding the Veil, 23. #88166.1 $9,250.

A fine exampleof Munster's "modern"map of the world. Thisexample is from thesecond woodblock en-graved by David Kan-del. His initials are inthe lower left. Themap is richly embel-lished with sea mon-sters and twelvewindheads. North

America is shown with the large cleft nearly separating the east coast from the continent, often referredto as the Sea of Verrazano. Appeared in Cosmographica. German text on verso. Image size 10 3/8 x 15".Good condition. Black & white. Shirley, R. Mapping of the World, 92. 88148.1 $2,950.

49. Green Grow The Lilacs. Thomas Hart Benton. Lithograph, 1954. This is a signed lithograph thatillustrates the book “Green Grow the Lilacs”. It is a proof print which was hand printed and signed inpencil by Thomas Hart Benton. The illustrations printed in the book are from the same plates but areprinted in reverse because the book was printed on an offset lithographic press. Offset presses print firston a rubber platen, then the rubber platen prints on the paper. The resulting image is in the samedirection as the plate. There are two benefits to these presses, first these presses print faster, and second, the artist can does not have to draw the image in reverse. The individual prints are not listed in “TheLithographs of Thomas Hart Benton” by Creekmore Fath because they were never issued in a signededition, only proofs of the lithographic illustrations exist. Signed in pencil by the artist. Image size: 86/16 x 6 1/2" (each print). Very good condition. #81714.1 $2,250.
