FROM THE ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR RESEARCH
Summer has been anything but quiet down in the ONR, with proposals
going out the door and awards coming right back in! Please take a few minutes to read about these diverse and exciting new awards – and our wonderful faculty who received them. I know our entire school is proud of their efforts and their success. What is especially fun to see is the range of awards, from two spectacular HRSA grants (Amar, Clevenger) to support our students to two awards for investigating epigen-etic contributions to adverse car-diac (Butts) and maternal-fetal (Dunlop) outcomes. And in between, studies of cognitive behavioral therapy and insom-nia (Routledge), smoking and RAGE in mice (Downs), and statistical modeling of dynamic changes in protein structure, which may sound confusing but is our
School’s first award to analyze big data (Paul).
Also, please welcome our School’s new postdoc, Dr. Irene Yang, joining us from the University of Louisville, and the
ONR’s new post-award specialist, So Yung Wilson, joining us from the School of Medicine. We are very happy to have them both on board.
Welcome also to all of our new faculty. Please stop down to the ONR anytime, grab a cup of
coffee, and chat about budding ideas you may have, or firm plans you have, for submitting proposals in the fall or spring. We thrive on talk and action in the ONR, and look forward to doing both!

RESEARCH AWARDS & SPONSORED PROJECTS
Brittany Butts, RN re-ceived an award from the Heart Failure Society of America.
Effects of Exercise on Epigenetic Pathways in Persons with Heart Failure will examine the effects of aerobic exercise (AEX) on changes in ASC (apoptosis-associated spec-like protein containing a caspase recruitment domain) methylation and whether this initiates a down-steam change in pro-inflammatory cytokines, tumor necrosis alpha know to worsen outcomes in persons with heart failure.
Dr. Faye Routledge, RN, PhD received an award from the AmericanHeart Association.
Online Cognitive Be-havioral Therapy for Insomnia will examine the feasibility of recruitment, retention, assessment procedures and implementation of the online CBT-I intervention (N=30) and attention control (N=30) in untreated individu-als with insomnia and PreHTN/HTB.
Dr. Angela Amar, PhD, RN, PMHCNS-BC, FAAN received an award from the Health Resources and Services Administration.
Building Nursing’s Diverse Leaders at Emory strives to prepare nursing students from disadvantaged and un-derrepresented backgrounds to enter the public health nursing workforce as leaders who provide care to
underserved populations and who can make a difference in local com-munities.
Dr. Carolyn Clevenger, PhD received an award from the Health Resourc-es and Services Adminis-tration.
Advanced Practice Primary Care for the Underserved will recruit, enroll, retain, and educate culturally diverse APN students to become culturally competent providers of primary care focused on underserved populations. Students will complete a program of study that leads to a Master of Sci-ence in Nursing (MSN) or a post-MSN certificate at the Nell Hodgson Wood-ruff School of Nursing.
Dr. Anne Dunlop, MD, MPH received an award from the National Insti-tutes of Health.
Epigenetic and Biobehavioral Determinants of Preterm Birth in Black Women will investigate whether specific biobehavioral factors linked to PTB influence the epigenetic regulation of genes to promote PTB in African American women.
Dr. Charles Downs, PhD received a collaborative award from the University Research Committee and the Atlanta Clinical& Translational Science Institute.
Cigarette Smoke Activates RAGE
to Affect Lung Fluid Balance will delineate the critical signaling events which cigarette smoke activates the receptor for advanced glycation end-products to impact lung fluid balance. Models in which the RAGE gene is absent will be used to ascer-tain the role of this protein in the development of altered lung fluid bal-ance that contributes to the develop-ment of smoking related lung disease.
Dr. Bonnie Jennings, PhD, RN, FAAN received an award from the Geneva Foundation.
Embracing the Past, Informing the Future: Military Nurses’ Wartime Experiences will help to better explain what it means to be a military nurse during wartime by exploring the narratives, letters, and photographs of Army, Navy, and Air Force nurses who deployed to a war zone from WWII to the present.
Dr. Sudeshna Paul, PhD received an award from the Emory University Research Committee.
Dynamic Statistical Modeling of Small Angle Scattering Images of Proteins aims to utilize the output images from this technology and implement a spatial and tem-poral method for analyzing dynamic image frames of protein molecules in solution. This will help estimate shape and structural characteristics of mole-cules and provide a crude method of identification.

J. So Yung Wilson has joined the Office of Nursing Research as our Post-Award Specialist where she will be responsible for all post
award activities, including monthly expenditure reports, award setup, salary distribution and effort reporting.
So Yung comes to us highly recommended from the Department of Medicine Research Administrative Service (RAS) Unit where she did post award management. Previous to that she worked in sponsored programs (pre and post award) administration in the Department of Endocrinology and the Department of Anthropology
here at Emory. Prior to coming to Emory, So Yung worked at the University of North Carolina and at the Ohio State University. So Yung has a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts from Malone University.
Dr. Irene Yang PhD, received her PhD in 2014 from the University of Louisville. Her experience as a maternal newborn nurse
in Kentucky was the impetus for her interest in the health behaviors of low-income pregnant and postpartum women. Her dissertation examined factors influencing the relationship between socioeconomic status and prenatal smoking with
a focus on the role of psychosocial mediators or moderators of that relationship.
Dr. Yang began her postdoctoral work on the T32 training grant in July of this year under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Corwin. Her work at Emory will expand her current research focus to include other prenatal risk behaviors as well biological and physiological links between those behaviors and prenatal outcomes. Her long term goal is to contribute to knowledge and interventions that will improve the health and well-being of socioeconomically vulnerable women and their newborns.
Our 2nd Annual Spring Fling was held on Friday, May 16, 2014. The Office of Nursing Research recognized
the hard work and dedication of all the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing researchers who received new grant awards. We celebrated by giving out seasonal plants. Awardees included: Dr. Charles Downs, Dr. Ken Hepburn, Dr. Ursla Kelly, Dr. Lisa Muirhead, Dr. Sudeshna Paul, and Dr. Julie Zuniga. Congratulations to all!

showcase the scholarly work of our students and post-docs. There was a great turn out, very interesting science, and an eager and well prepared group of post-doctoral fellows and students. Prizes were awarded to the top 3 posters. Please join us in congratulating the excellent work of these students and trainees: Jessica Holmes,
Screening and Follow-Up Patterns for Cervical and Anal Cancers in HIV-infected individuals;Brittany Butts, Caregiver Stress
and Cardiovascu-lar Disease Risk among Female Family Caregivers of Persons with Heart Failure;Sara Tomaso, Characteristics of
Physical and Psychological Status in Family Care.
Where Can I Find Stats Help?
Data, data everywhere and not a statistician in sight! Need statistics help? There are numerous resources on campus and on the Internet that are only a mouse click away. Please review these resources for potential help when a statistician is not readily available.
At Emory:Did you know that there are FREE classes on Statistics software (SPSS and Epi Info) as well as on other helpful resources (Endnote, PubMed, and CINAHL) provided by the Woodruff Health Sciences Center (WHSC) Library?• For a complete list, see http://health.library.emory.edu/training/index.html, click on the “Workshops and Class-es Description” and view their workshops calendar for upcoming courses. • There are also FREE courses available through Lynda.com which can be accessed in the WHSC Library’s Spe-cialized Software Lab, http://health.library.emory.edu/training/lynda.html.
