“We are facing unprecedented challenges - social, economic and environmental - driven by accelerated globalisation and a faster rate of technological developments. The children entering education in 2019 will be young adults in 2030. Schools can prepare them for jobs that have not yet been created, for technologies that have not yet been invented, to solve problems that have not been anticipated. It will be a shared responsibility to seize opportunities and find solutions.”

(OECD: The Future of Education and Skills:

The Future We Want: Education 2030)

Dear Members of the Blackfriars Community,

We live in challenging times. Continually changing and evolving times within the social and environmental context of today demands us to creatively respond to the educational needs of young people as they progress their way into the 21st Century, and who will in turn, shape the global future.

Blackfriars is embracing, with enthusiasm, the opportunity to discern the needs of our students, listen to our parent community and re-imagine the way we approach education in light of universal social, environmental and technological change. Our mission is to provide a relevant education that delivers a platform for students to grow in confidence and thrive in the modern world, and to develop diverse skills, knowledge and personal attributes for success and happiness in 2030 and beyond.

The Live Learn Lead Conference

Our school year began with the Live Learn Lead Conference, a call for renewal from Dr Neil McGoran, Director of Catholic Education in South Australia. Over five thousand committed educators from Catholic schools in South Australia, including all staff from Blackfriars, attended the gathering.

The conference was an energy charged and inspirational day including an address from Dr McGoran who challenged all Catholic schools and staff to improve holistic outcomes for students in learning, wellbeing, social and spiritual development. This mandate for unified and holistic improvement was reinforced by the release of the new strategic direction for Catholic Education, Leading Catholic Education to New Levels of Excellence.

Renewed Vision at Blackfriars

The release of the new strategic direction for Catholic Education in South Australia coincided seamlessly with the internal renewal and school improvement occurring at Blackfriars. In 2018 we engaged the services of educational consultants, TATU, to survey and dialogue with key individuals and groups across our school community with the focus of

improving the quality and value of our education at Blackfriars.

I was encouraged by the following insightful statement in the TATU report to the Board:

“The Dominican charism offers a relevant message for parents today – Veritas – the search for truth.

• A sense of curiosity and discovery

• A sense of who I am and what I may become

• A sense of my place in the world and how I can contribute to others

• A sense of justice and acceptance of diversity

Blackfriars can be the school that sparks a journey of discovery in each boy’s quest for knowledge. In an increasingly narcissistic world, Blackfriars can be the school that appeals to parents who want to raise a child who is self-aware, selfless and kind. It can be the school of equity and excellence.”

In addition to the aptitudes mentioned by TATU, Blackfriars is focused on preparing students who will have complementary and parallel skills predicted to be essential in 2030.

These are:

• Self-agency or efficacy (participation and involvement)

• Judgement and discernment

• Creativity

• Complex problem solving

• People skills(OECD: The Future of Education and Skills:

The Future We Want: Education 2030)

Students require both in-depth subject knowledge together with the skills and capabilities mentioned above to address the challenge of real life situations and problems.

Turning Goals into Reality

Blackfriars is making these dreams for the future a reality through the implementation of a number of specific programs. These include:

1. The building of the Aquinas Centre with a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The centre will focus on excellence in learning, particularly for senior students as they prepare to transition to future study and career pathways.

2. The development of the Ax Academy Program. The Ax Program offers students a broad range of problem solving and project-based activities and subject acceleration in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and enables highly motivated students to challenge their academic capabilities,

@blackfriarsschool

collaborate with other like-minded students and excel in the Pillar of Study.

3. The implementation of a future-focused Blackfriars Learning and Teaching Framework.

4. The implementation of the Blackfriars Wellbeing Handbook for Boys.

5. The introduction of a Renewal and Development Review for all members of staff.

I invite you to visit the Blackfriars website or to personally contact the Development Office to learn and discover more about the exciting developments happening at our school and to explore ways in which you could reconnect and be a part of this progressive community.

Our responsibility is to inspire, invite and motivate a new vision and a new direction for the 21st Century future of Blackfriars. It is together that we will make a difference to the education and development of boys in readiness for the modern world.

The Blackfriars Priory School of yesteryear is far removed from the Blackfriars of today, but the Dominican traditions and the cornerstones of the Four Pillars remain relevant, significant and fundamental in shaping and influencing the whole-person development of young boys to men in the real world.

B O Y S ACHIEVED AN ATAR OF 90+ 26

parents and staff who have worked tirelessly to bring out the best in our boys.

While achieving an ATAR above 90 is an exceptional accomplishment, it does not define you. The qualities that make a young man a fine member of society run deeper than a number. Looking at the class of 2018 it is obvious that we will have quality men of substance working in a broad spectrum of professions.

It was heartening to see that the overwhelming majority of our students succeeded in being accepted into their first university preference or trade of choice. To know that our boys achieved their God-given potential is why we exist as a school.

Chatting with several graduates of 2018 revealed the tight bonds of friendship that will continue as they coordinate their university lectures and course in a manner to ensure that they can catch up with their Blackfriars mates.

Yes, the mantra lives true, “Once a Blacks Boy… always a Blacks Boy.” The tight bond your son will form with friends at school, and the connection to the Four Pillars will serve him well for his future endeavours.

The annual Laureate Assembly, held on Monday 18 February, was an auspicious celebration of the expression of the Four Pillars of Dominican Life at Blackfriars. The assembly recognised the Class of 2018 graduates who achieved an ATAR of 90 or above and culminated in the awarding of the Magnus Medal and Nicholas Altman Book Prize to Duy Minh Vu Tran, who achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.45.

Duy is now studying a Bachelor of Mathematical and Computer Science at Adelaide University.

Generations in Jazz Prospect Road Autumn FairThe 2019 Generations in Jazz weekend took place in Mount Gambier from 3 to 5 May. Participating in this annual event, that attracts over 5000 student musicians and vocalists, representing over 100 schools from Australia and New Zealand, plus a host of internationally renowned jazz artists, is the highlight of the music program for many schools.

The Blackfriars music department, lead by Miss Lucy Pope, was represented by two Stage Bands and a Vocal Ensemble this year. 36 students made the trip for Saturday’s competitions and the opportunity to see some of the world’s best exponents of jazz in concert on Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday morning.

The boys achieved outstanding results with Stage Band 1 leading the way, placing third in their Division - the best result ever for a Blackfriars band at GIJ.

Our Vocal Ensemble were the highest placed group from South Australia in their division while Stage Band 2 put on a great performance finishing mid-table in their division.

On Sunday 31 March, over 1000 visitors headed to Blackfriars for the inaugural Prospect Road Autumn Fair. This new community event, supported by Network Prospect, brought together local businesses, schools, sports clubs, entertainers and cultural groups active in the City of Prospect, in celebration of our community.

Whether guests were here to buy a unique piece of furniture, spot that ideal piece of artwork for a wall at home, sample some traditional Vietnamese fare, plan their next holiday, get a thrill from the Hurricane ride, or even to get a free eye test - there was certainly something on offer for all comers!

Entertainment on the day was provided by the Blackfriars and St Mary’s College music departments and roving performers from CircoBats kept people enthralled in the afternoon. Demonstrations from the Eagles Lacrosse Club, Blackfriars Soccer Academy and Healthy Inspirations meant there was something to get the blood pumping too.

Given the success of the 2019 event, keep an eye on your calendar for the Prospect Road Autumn Fair becoming a regular fixture on the Blackfriars and Prospect calendar.

APRIM Shrove Tuesday & Ash Wednesday / Opening MassReflection Days

During Week 9, Years 7, 8 and 9 attended Reflection Days conducted by NET Ministries. NET are a team of young people dedicated to ministry during gap years, or other breaks in their study, or after completing university. There were three Canadians and an American, as well as six from New South Wales and Queensland who ministered to our students.

The day is a mixture of high-energy activities, skits with messages and highly reverent and reflective prayer periods. The students report that they thoroughly enjoyed their days.

The photo to the right shows the NET team performing a crucifixion-type skit and the students watching on intently.

The Year 11s held their Reflection Day at Aldgate, facilitated by RealTalk. This was a combination of high-energy activities with a message and a point, as well as meaningful and informative discussions around respectful relationships. The students report enjoying the day and gaining a lot from it.

Project Compassion

Classes have been collecting money for Caritas Project Compassion throughout Term 1. There have been a number of fundraisers, such as the BBQ run by YCS students, Prefects and House Captains.

Primary Swimming Carnival & Sports DayAussie Rules Development ProgramThe Primary Swimming Carnival and Sports Day are covered elsewhere in this issue. However I did want to report to you how amazing the children were during both events.

The 50th Primary (Year 3-6) Swimming Carnival saw the boys compete vigorously, cheer loudly, show great sportsmanship and behave perfectly. The day was won by Spence House.

The Sports Day (ELC – Year 6) was equally pleasing in all those aspects and much fun was had. The new format saw participation at a maximum and it ran like clockwork – well done Nick! Cussen were crowned champions for 2019.

The P+F made the day a very enjoyable one for the huge crowd that attended. A coffee van was available from early morning with drinks, sausages, cakes, cookies and apples also available in “Café Blackfriars” in Frassati Hall. Great work by our hard-working parents.

Mr Frank Ali Head of Primary

Exciting news for Football lovers!

Blackfriars has a strong tradition, particularly lately, with soccer and the Soccer School of Excellence has been a great boon for the school, providing great opportunities for our boys. It seems though, that Aussie Rules suffered and the school had no representative teams last year in the Primary School.

That has all changed in 2019 and we have three Primary teams entered in the schools’ competition this year and have Auskick available here on our school oval.

Further to that we have established an Aussie Rules Development Program offered to boys from Years 5, 6 and 7. It will be run and overseen by two highly accomplished teachers with experience and expertise in AFL.

Current Primary Football Coach and teacher, Henry Vo (‘09) was a member of his Blackfriars 1st XVIII Football squad and holds a Level 1 AFL Coaching Qualification, is joined by current Blackfriars 1st XVIII coach and former St Kilda player, Brett Knowles, who has coaching experience at State level and holds a Level 3 AFL Coaching certificate. Henry and Brett are working together to deliver a structured and highly engaging program.

To kick off the program, 2018 North Adelaide Football Club Premiership coach (and former Power premiership player), Josh Carr, was joined by Premiership player, Luke Hender, to run a skills session for the boys during Term 1.

During Term 2 the Adelaide Crows will host an assembly on Positive Reflection (a follow up to some work staff undertook earlier in the year with the Growing with Gratitude Program) and then take our Receptions, Year 1s and 2s for a coaching clinic.

A visit to Alberton Oval and the Port Adelaide Football Club is also planned for the football program participants.

Thanks go to Michael Parrella, Brett Knowles and Henry Vo for their great enthusiasm in supporting and developing this initiative.

House: Dowling Colour: Blue Est. 1953

Dublin-born, Vincent Christopher Dowling, was the first Dominican known to have stepped onto Australian soil. He arrived in Sydney in 1831 as a government-sponsored chaplain to the Catholic community.

House Heritage

House: Candler Colour: Red Est. 1953

Vincent Candler was Australia’s first Dominican - the first Dominican priest to be ordained in Australia. Born in Adelaide and educated at the Dominican convent in Franklin Street (now St Mary’s College), Candler entered the novitiate in Dublin, returning to Adelaide for his ordination in 1908.

House: Spence Colour: Gold Est. 1953

Arriving in Adelaide in September 1898, Robert Spence led the first group of Dominican men to arrive in Adelaide, and established the St Laurence’s community to serve North Adelaide, Prospect and Kilburn. Spence, born in Cork, was Archbishop of Adelaide from 1915 to 1934.

House: Cussen Colour: White Est. 1961

In 1950, the Dominican community in Australia and New Zealand was established as a Province in it’s own right with Mannes Cussen appointed as the first Prior Provincial. Blackfriars was established during Cussen’s term in office (1950-56).

The recent updates made to the Neill Gymnasium, funded with the assistance of the 2018 Annual Appeal, prompted something of a revival of interest in the identity of the twelve houses we have at Blackfriars. This came about as we looked at the best way to acknowledge each house around the walls of the court area through flags, banners and signage.

As this work continues in 2019, we take a look at the Blackfriars Houses and explore their background.

The Originals

Students arriving at Blackfriars in the earliest years of the school belonged to one of the three original houses: Candler (Red), Dowling(Blue) and Spence (Gold). These houses were named for men who played a prominent part in the early life of the Catholic Church and establishment of the Dominican order in Australia.

A New House

As the school grew, a fourth house, Cussen (White) was added in 1961, following the same naming tradition already established.

These four houses live on in the Primary School today and their flags are on display in the Primary School administration area. The house colours replicate those found in the school crest (i.e. Dowling is the school’s light Cambridge blue rather than a dark or royal shade and red is a dark shade called ‘sanguine’) while the flags of the original three houses also include graphic elements from the school crest.

Updated versions of these four flags will go on display in the Neill Gymnasium later in 2019.

The Vertical House System

During 1986-87 the vertical house system was introduced in the Senior School with the creation of the eight houses we have today.

This unique system, which places students from across all senior year levels into a single Home Group, allows students from higher year levels to mix with younger students acting as ‘buddies’ or role models. Three or four Home Groups are then joined together to form a House to complete the system which also forms the basis for the Senior School Pastoral Care program.

The eight houses in the Senior School are named for prominent Dominican men from throughout the history of the order whose life works’ were deemed as having a particular resonance for young men living in contemporary society. Their flags and colours are linked to the man for whom they are named.

Notes and curiosities

de Vitoria or de Vittoria

For many years, here have been inconsistencies at Blackfriars in the spelling of Francisco de Vitoria’s name - does it have a single or double ‘t’? A simple Internet search makes it clear that the correct spelling has a single ‘t’, with this format used by the Dominican Order at www.op.org and in the name of the university named for the man himself, University Francisco de Vitoria (UFV) in Spain.

Two defunct houses

For the first year of the Vertical House System in 1986, ten houses were in place. This was rationalised in 1987 when it became apparent that ten teams competing in an eight lane swimming pool or on an eight lane athletics track, was going to pose something of a problem! The two defunct houses were named Angelico (named for Bl. Fra Angelico) and de Porres (for St Martin de Porres).

Mr Patrick Kelly (BPS’90) Director of Development & Community Relations

House: Burke Colours: Black Gold Est. 1986

Flag: Equal vertical thirds of black, gold and red. Black signifies the Dominicans and the yellow and red are from the Burke family crest.

Fr Tom Burke (1830-1883), the admired Irish Preacher whose wit, joyful spirit, intelligence and goodness made him a legendary communicator of the Catholic faith.

House: Aquinas Colours: White Black Est. 1986

Flag: Quarters of white and black, signifying the Dominican Order and eighths of gold and red, from the Aquino family crest.

St Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) is, by general agreement, regarded as the outstanding Catholic scholar for the synthesis of reasoned reflection and divine revelation.

House: Denifle Colours: Red White Est. 1986

Flag: Red and white quarters, derived from the crest of the city of Imst, Tyrol, Fr Denifle’s birthplace.

Fr Henry Denifle (1844–1905), was an historian of international repute with a gift for languages. He wrote, Inter Alia, a five volume history of all the Medieval Universities.

House: de Vitoria Colours: Blue Green Est. 1986

Flag: Derived from the crest of Salamanca University with a central panel of blue and ninths of green, white and red on either side.

Fr Francisco de Vitoria (1483-1546), regarded as the Father of International Law, was professor at Salamanca University during the discovery of the Americas and defended the rights of native peoples.

In any given year, in any workplace, staff come and go. As circumstance would have it, the end of year in 2018 signalled a significant number of staff leaving 17 Prospect Road for a wide variety of career and lifestyle choices.

Among the list of staff leaving were a number with long and illustrious careers at Blackfriars, including a number with 20 years or more service (see below). Whether it be these “veterans” of Blackfriars or those with lesser tenure, we thank them all for their valued contributions to the Blackfriars community.

20 years or more service at Blackfriars:

• Ms Rita Purvis, 1978 - 2018 (41 years)

• Ms Cathie Oswald, 1981 - 2018 (38 years)

• Mr Wayne Thompson, 1986 - 2018 (33 years)

We begin season 2019 with a new name, re-designed logo, new sponsors and our largest membership playing group to date. This year, BOSA FC has four senior men’s teams in the SAASL Saturday Divisions as well as two senior women’s teams in the FFSA Sunday Divisions.

Our women’s program has grown significantly in just its third year since inception and due to this we have had a huge increase in interest from female participants. So, in 2019 we are proud to introduce a second women’s team to our playing group.

All six teams in 2019 are lead by experienced coaching staff and supported by a strong leadership team of captains and vice captains. Both men’s and women’s sides have taken part in a tough pre-season which has already proven to be beneficial with great starts to the season so far. The women’s teams having the most success currently sitting undefeated in both the league and cup competitions.

This year also marks the beginning of a new three-year sponsorship deal with BOSA FC and we are proud to announce the following sponsors for the 2019-2021 seasons:

Schinella’s – Your Local Market, Buildtec, Ray White West Torrens, Elite Car Detailers, Pizze in Giro, Jarmer’s Kitchen, My Local Butcher, Body Fit Physiotherapy, Terry Howe Printing Services, Trio, RDC + Partners, PAB Carpentry, Axle Co Mechanical, Stella Motors, Wakefield Chartered Accountants, SJ Electric, Romaldi Constructions, Perry’s Bakery, Marianne Grasso, JS Sports and Blackfriars Priory School.

As always, none of our success would be possible without the support from our sponsors, so we’d like to extend a heart-felt thank you for their commitment to the next three years. Their generous contributions help make our visions a reality and as we continue to grow as a club, partnerships with our sponsors are vital to our

BOSA FC at the Prospect Road Autumn Fair held at Blackfriars.

Blackfriars Old Scholars Football Club (BOSFC) is up and running for the year and really looking forward to welcoming new faces and a new era. It’s exciting times for the club as we look ahead with anticipation to the first BOSFC women’s footy game and the continued growth of our men’s teams.

This year, the BOSFC have opened their doors to women’s football and are entering a team into the Adelaide Women’s Footy League for the 2019 season. The new women’s team will be coached by BPS Old Scholar, Lachlan ‘Locky’ Sandford, who comes to the club after having been involved with coaching women’s football at Adelaide University Football Club, Woodville West Torrens and North Adelaide. Locky has a wealth of knowledge in coaching women’s football and his standing in the local community and women’s football has brought an influx of women to the club to support and play for the upcoming season. We now have over 35 registered players with more new players joining every week. By all reports, the girls are loving being involved with BOSFC and we look forward to being able to get out and cheer them on when their games begin on 28 April 2019.

Behind the scenes, committee members and coaching staff have been working tirelessly to get the women’s team up and running. This has included promotion, recruiting, organisation and raising funds through avenues such as applications for grant opportunities. Through grants channels the club has been fortunate to receive financial assistance for women’s football from Rachel Sanderson and the State Government which has directly assisted the club to fund this new venture. BOSFC welcomed Rachel Sanderson to training on 18 April to present the cheque to the club. On this night both the men and women trained together, showcasing their skills to Rachel and the club’s other members in attendance.

As many of you will be aware, BOSFC went into the 2019 pre-season with newly appointed Head Coach, Rickie Kelly, at the helm.

Unfortunately shortly after taking on the position Rickie was invited to join West Adelaide Football Club as an assistant coach. This left the club and committee in the un-enviable position of finding a new coach with less than 5 weeks to go before the start of the season. From this process we are excited to announce the appointment of Jarrad O’Riley, as Senior Coach for the 2019 season. Jarrad has experience with both country and city football, playing as an assistant coach for the past 3 years at North Clare and at Fitzroy and in the Barossa before that. In a first for BOSFC, Jarrad will be coming on board as a playing coach, which combined with Reserves coach Tony Di Bucchiancio and assistants John Belton (’85), Mathew Nelson and Pat Barbaro a promising coaching group has been assembled to guide the club through the 2019 season.

Now in its 14th season the Blackfriars Old Scholars Football Club continues to be a great destination for schoolmates to continue playing together as Hounds after their graduation. The club welcomes

success on and off the field.

In other news, earlier this year, BOSA FC was successful in receiving a Community Sport Infrastructure Grant for the amount of $ 151,600 to improve local community sport infrastructure which will support greater community participation in sport and physical activity and/or offer safer and more inclusive community sporting hubs. Our application was centred around upgrading our change rooms, internal and external toilets and referee room to bring them into line with a multi-use facility by women and men.

Over the coming months we will be working closely with the City of Prospect to plan the project with an estimated completion date of December 2019.

From a social perspective, we have some fantastic events planned for this year including our Ladies Day on Saturday 1 June, a casino-themed Games Night on Saturday 27 July, Quiz Night on Saturday 7 September and finishing off the season with a Family Fun Day on Saturday 14 September.

Our monthly best on ground awards nights are also back this year with club sponsor The Jarmer Room at Jarmer’s Kitchen hosting the events again.

To finish the year off, with an event not to be missed, we will be holding our Annual Awards Night on Saturday 12 October at the Pullman Adelaide. Be sure to mark all the events in your diaries so that you don’t miss out on any of the action.

Stay up to date with BOSA FC news via our website and follow us on social media – Facebook, Twitter and Instagram @bosafc98. For any enquiries, please email us – [email protected]

all new players but is extremely proud to be able to announce yet another group of old scholars have joined the fold.

New to the club this year we welcome Old Scholars Anthony Pigliachelli, Nam Nugyen, Andrew Grigic, Michael Grgic, Harrison Dunn, George Kropinyeri, Jayden Gohl, Alex Koutroulis-Duke, Anton Miraglia and Ben Russell.

For the club to continue to grow each season, support from the community is key. We have great membership deals with discounts with sponsors and participating businesses throughout Prospect and North Adelaide. This season the club is running a new fundraiser and event through our Player Auction. On 4 May at a club event, members of the community will have the chance to bid and purchase the group of players they feel will feature most in the best player awards each week. All registered men’s and women’s players will be split into 10 groups. Get your syndicates together and purchase the group of players you think will feature most in the weekly awards. At the end of the season, whoever owns the groups of players that feature in the best players the most wins. Check out the details on our website at www.bosfchounds.com. We continue this season our partnership with the Australian Sports Foundation which allows tax deductable donations by individual supporters directly to BOSFC. Donations can be made through the ASF website or through the BOSFC website. We are currently asking for donations to help with start up costs for women’s football.

BOSFC’s sponsors are pivotal to the club’s success. We’re fortunate enough to have the support of a wide variety of top-quality sponsors without which we simply wouldn’t be able to survive. We would like to thank our 2019 sponsors: Blackfriars Priory School, The Wellington Hotel, My Local Butcher, Bakery on O’Connell, All Fresh Fruit and Veg, Signclass, Palace Nova Cinemas Prospect, JS Sports, The Carrington Function Centre, Schinella’s Market, Dellamalva Dental, Fasta Pasta Sefton Park, 50-Sixone Prospect, Bakers Delight Welland, Body Fit Physiotherapy, Fyfe, Peter Page Holden, The Frame Connection, Prospect Clothing Alterations, Sylvesters Pizza Kilkeny and Gelati Delivery.

For the latest club news check out the club’s website and social media pages.

The season is shaping up well and BOSFC looks forward to many members of the Blackfriars and Blackfriars Old Scholars communities becoming regular faces in our loyal supporter group in 2019.

Above right: Old Scholar, James Knott (‘98) gives “service with a smile” behind the bar as Manager of at the “Excelsior Hotel” - 110 Coglin Street, Brompton.

Two of the key Dominican Pillars that Blackfriars Priory School is particularly proud of, are those of “community” and “service”.

One needs to look no further than the examples featured herein to note the diverse range of Old Scholars whose service to the community is very apparent in the area of hospitality.

Coincidentally, their collective generosity extends back into our school, so if you get the chance, please support these supporters of Blackfriars and let them know you’re a “Blacks” person as well!

NB - We have no doubt this is just a small sample of Blackfriars Old Scholars involved in hospitality or even other collective vocations such as finance, music, health care or education. So, if you know of such a group of “Blacks Boys” please let me know.

2018 Christmas Reunion Class of 2009 I 10 Year Reunion

Class of 2018 I 1 Year Reunion Dr Mark Arens (‘79)

In recent years, a tradition has been established at Blackfriars by inviting Old Scholar swimmers and athletes of note, to present awards at the annual Secondary Swimming and Athletics Carnivals.

At our recent Secondary Athletics Carnival, we were thrilled to have Dr Mark Arens (‘79) present the winner’s trophy. Mark, who was the first South Australian junior to break the 4-minute mile, has the distinction of still holding four long standing Blackfriars records.

Two of the records were set 40 years ago, at the 1979 Blackfriars

A hardy band of 30 or so from the Class of 2009, gathered for the recent 10 Year Reunion. Particular thanks to Andreas Fusco and Daniel Weekley for your support in marshalling the ”09ers”!

Following the 2018 Laureate Assembly in February this year, the Class of 2018 returned to Blackfriars for their first reunion as Old Scholars.

Missed it by ‘ that much’!

A mixture of Old Scholars, staff, parents and friends caught up at the Blackfriars Christmas Reunion last year. If you’re free, come and join us – the event is always held on the last Sunday before Christmas (22 December in 2019 - venue tbc).

Winners of the respective events with the four records still held by Dr Mark Arens. (LtoR): Kane Flanagan, Open 800m (29 secs), Kelsey Rypstra, U15 800m (7 secs) and Lewis Saint, U16 800 (2 secs!), share a joke with Mark about how close they came whilst trackside at the Secondary Athletics Carnival.

Athletics Carnival, in the Open 800 and 1500m. Not surprisingly, given that Mark was a very elite athlete in his day, it was always going to be tough for current day students to break his old mark!

A huge thank you to Mark for taking a break from his duties as a leading Adelaide gastroenterologist and joining us for the afternoon.

BB’s 80th Birthday Old Scholars Overseas (OSOS)

In the day-to-day life of the Blackfriars Priory School community, days of celebrations come

and go on a regular basis. However, in February this year a very special celebration took

place.

February 13 gave Blackfriars the opportunity to say a double congratulations to Br Brendan

O’Hearn, or BB as he has been known to thousands of students, staff, parents and friends at

Blackfriars. Not only was BB’s 80th birthday celebrated on the day but also his 60th year at

Blackfriars!

Typically modest, BB didn’t want a fuss made on such an occasion but we did manage to sneak

a few extra guests into a modest staff lunch and cutting of the cake at lunchtime in the staff

room. Principal, Simon Cobiac, spoke of the multitude of significant roles Brother has held in

his tenure at Blackfriars, dating back to his first day at 17 Prospect Road in 1960.

With a mixture of Old Scholars, past staff, family and friends present, BB was presented with

a giant birthday cake, certainly befitting a man who has given so much service, to so many

people, over so many years.

From all members of the Blackfriars community, past and present, thank you BB!

2018 Annual Appeal - Thank You!

In 2018, Old Scholars, parents and staff (current and past) and friends of Blackfriars were asked to consider a gift to assist with minor upgrades to the Neill Gymnasium as an Annual Appeal project in 2018.

With the assistance of these generous supporters, over the past six months the gymnasium floor has been refurbished, line markings have been updated, a new scoreboard installed and new ‘Blackfriars Spirit’ signage has been erected.

By the end of July, new perspex basketball backboards will be installed and the existing eight Secondary School house banners will be updated and added to with four Primary School house banners.

We wish to thank all those listed here who have supported Blackfriars most generously in 2018-19. Through your generous financial support, the programs and facilities at our school are greatly enhanced benefiting the educational outcomes of all students.

2019 Annual Appeal

The Blackfriars Annual Appeal is a philanthropic program where each member of our community is given the opportunity to support the ongoing work of our school. Typically, gifts to the Annual Appeal are sought once-a-year and therefore consist of a modest monetary donation.

In 2019, our Annual Appeal focuses on two projects that contribute to very different aspects of community life at Blackfriars.
