From the Rector’s Desk….

The Expectant Church We now enter the holy season of Advent. The words and feelings that rise from this spiritually rich round of expectancy are perhaps “hope,” “longing,” and “anticipation.” As we absorb the scriptures tied to Advent, we’re drawn again into the deep yearn-ing of ancient, longsuffering Is-rael, watching for the Deliverer. When circumstances are dire, peo-ple ride the edge dividing listless despair from prayerful expecta-tion. In these weeks before Christ-mas, we keep watch for the com-ing Savior. Christmas is many things to peo-ple. To commerce it makes or breaks profits for the year. For the overburdened, estranged from oth-ers by the cruel demands of sched-ule and circumstance, it is short of time and connection with others. For people conditioned to be harsh and stingy in their daily existence, it is a chance to call “time-out” for good will and generosity (would that it were a permanent change for the better).

For Christians, Christmas is the re-living of God’s drawing nigh through the Incarnation of the eter-nal Word. Again, for the faithful, it is the fulfillment of God’s saving act in the birth of Christ Jesus, by which he ransomed us from sin and death and brought us into the kingdom of light. We take time spiritually to prepare for the Feast of the Incarnation, Christmas, be-cause it is everything, it is salva-tion fulfilled. That is why the four Sundays preceding Christmas Day are so important to us. On the First Sunday of Advent, November 29th, we make wreaths in the morning between the ser-vices so we can observe devotions in our homes. As day light fades that evening we gather for The Ad-vent Procession of Lessons and Carols. Each week from there un-folds into a holy time of watching, preparing, rejoicing and expecting the “Dayspring from on high…God-with-us…our Lord, Em-manuel.” May yours be a richly blessed season of hope. David

In order for our Parish Hall to be clean and ready for the next event, and since we don’t employ anyone to do this, we need your help. When not in use, the ideal configuration for the Parish Hall is a clear floor with all tables and chairs stowed in their racks. This will allow for a thorough cleaning by our janitorial service. Because of the multi-use nature of our facility, each event could require a different seating arrangement. Therefore it is important that each group set up and take down tables and chairs as required. Tables should be wiped clean prior to take down. Please take this into con-sideration when making preparations for your event. Likewise, when using dishes and utensils from the kitchen, please make sure they are washed, dried, and put away after use. If you use the dish washer, please unload it after the cycle is complete. If you make coffee, please turn off the coffee maker when finished, dispose of the remaining coffee, and wash and dry the coffee pot. Additionally, sinks, counter tops, and drying racks should be clean and ready for the next user. Used kitchen towels should be taken home, washed, and returned.

Your help in keeping our Parish Hall in order is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your support.

Be Kind to Our Parish Hall, Please

Stewardship Corner

with Lynne Bruner

The holiday season is often a time when we think of giving. As a parish we are making a move to change the way we think about stewardship. This month in stewardship news I have included a won-derful form (see opposite page) for pa-rishioners to use to evaluate their view of stewardship. It is truly a shift of focus for most people to think about the con-cept that all they have is a gift from God. If it is all his anyway, who are we to not follow biblical principles and tithe? In our family that is what changed our focus completely. We became cheerful, faith-ful givers when we accepted that princi-ple. Our family has experienced a true spiritual shift on many levels since we became faithful to the tithe. Please take a minute to read the questions on the form and discuss them as a family. What a great way to start the dialogue in prepara-tion for giving!

On Sunday, November 29, at 5:00 pm, the clergy, musicians, and acolytes of Grace will usher in Advent with the annual procession. At twilight the choir sings in the narthex, “I looked from afar…” Lessons recalling the Creation, our alienation from God, and the promise of the Messiah are illuminated by carols and chorales, or-gan preludes, and congregational Advent hymns. Finally, in the light of the altar, comes the final promise: “Tomorrow, go ye forth and the Lord will be with you.” The commercial world insists that we show our love at Christmas by going deeper into debt and smothering our children with things. And each year the jingles and come-ons arrive earlier. The church over the centuries points another way, beckoning us to wait, to be quiet, and to look for the Promised One. We are invited to set aside an hour at dusk in Advent’s beginning to set ourselves on the path toward Bethlehem for a holy and blessed Christmas.

For more information, please contact Bill Wicker.

DOK DeGeorge Service

Project is Chance for All of Us to Help Veterans

For several years the Dame Julian DOK has col-lected plastic shoe boxes filled Christmas gifts for the DeGeorge veter-ans. Well, it's that time again. A list of suggested items will be posted in the Parish House. Boxes must be

turned by December 13th. Questions contact Dorothy Campbell 281-482-6632.

December Bunko Party, ECW Style: 6PM Dec 4th

Ladies, let’s take an evening just for ourselves before December gets too crazy. We usually meet on Saturday mornings but we want to keep those Saturday mornings free in the month of De-cember. We’ll meet starting at 6pm on Friday evening, December 4th for a light supper of soup, salad and bread. Admission is $1 and a friend. There will be a sign-up sheet in the Parish Hall for food and so we can figure out how many tables of Bunko we’ll have. All women of Grace are warmly invited to attend. If you’ve never played Bunko, it is super easy, which makes it so much fun. You’ll be able to play and carry on a conversation. If you’re part of a Bunko group, please let Terrie Beasley or Mary Smith know – we’ll be publishing Grace Bunko Rules for the evening and we’d love to have your input. Prizes will be monetary, hence the $1 admission fee! (We can plan child care if needed – please let Mary Smith know by Dec. 1st, with the names and ages of children.) Hope to see all of you there!

Advent Plants, Christmas Flowers,

and the Beauty of Both

As we enter into the Season of Ad-vent, the Altar Guild is putting a heavy emphasis on natural beauty. During Advent, potted Norfolk pines will be placed on the Altar as well as arranged in Narthex. The pines on the altar

will all be new purchases while the pines in the Narthex will be on loan to Grace. Several of the Narthex pines have previ-ously served as altar plants. We will be creatively using our natural resources, as well as conserving our financial re-sources. For Christmas, the pines will be replaced with a myriad of colorful poinsettias. By combining sizes and colors, we hope to create a joyfully dazzling Christmas dis-play befitting the wonder and glory of Christ. To accomplish this lofty goal, the Altar Guild will need the help of ALL parishioners. Christmas flower dedica-tions are currently being accepted in three categories: in memory of, in honor of, and in thanksgiving for. Flower dedica-tions are $12 and the dedication list will be printed in the service leaflets begin-ning with December 24th and continuing

through Epiphany (January 6th). Please take note of the new lower price of the dedications. This reduction is an attempt to make the dedications accessible to everyone. One hundred percent partici-pation would make a grand display truly spectacular. Checks should be made out to Grace Episcopal Church with Christ-mas dedication on the notation/memo line. All dedications should be made on the forms provided. Forms are available through the parish office, in the Outpost, in the narthex and in the service leaf-lets. Form deadline is December 20, 2009. Both the altar pines and poinsettias will be available for planting in your homes after the epiphany service. The ultimate goal is for the beauty of Christmas to shine within the Church now and then to shine in your homes later. Please make several dedications today.

Thank you from the Deacons

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Joe and I would like to say ‘Thank you” to all of you who have wel-comed us so warmly and made us feel like we are part of the family. You have prayed for us; helped us with KAIROS cookies, and we are having fun getting to know each of you. Alas, we are still working on a few names and don’t quite have all the children’s names learned yet. But we will learn them if you let us stick around for another year. (so if Joe calls you by the wrong name just correct him and please don’t take offense) We arrived and were introduced to you at the beginning of Advent last year and served at the altar on Christmas Eve for the first time. In just a few days, we will be ‘old timers’ and eager to be-gin another year of service.

As you cook and shop and wrap and decorate, don’t forget the poor; those who need food from the Alvin Food Pantry. There are several families in our own congregation who are receiving food from the food pantry. They are serving over 250 families a month. If you wish to give to a family in need, write a check to Grace and put in the memo fund either the Rector’s Discretionary Fund or the Deacon’s Discretionary Fund. Father David is in charge of what we do and he knows what is going on. The main difference is that the Deacon’s dis-cretionary fund money may go to feed someone in the community or pay a utility bill (no not ours!). Don’t forget to make an extra dozen cookies for KAIROS. Carol Ann is serving on the next one at the Hobby Unit just outside of Marlin just after Christmas.

Peace and Joy,

CarolAnn and Joe Mills

God's Special Time KAIROS is a Christian prison ministry whose goal is to Christianize the prison environment. You can help this ministry by baking cookies. Home-

made cookies, distributed liberally to the inmates during the weekend, are a tangible expression of God's over-flowing love for His children and the presence of that love in Christian people everywhere. It is a love seldom en-countered in the everyday lives of these prisoners. Your loving sacrifice in baking the cookies will provide "bread" that will shine the light of God's grace into the darkest comers of the prison.

Sunday School News and Updates

Sunday School in November was full of fun and surprises! The children of Grace represented Patron Saints in a parade on All Saints Day during the 10:30 Service. The following weeks were filled with stories, games and activities with a Noah's Ark Theme. The children hammered nails, built with Lincoln Logs, sang songs, played Arc trivia games, made windsocks and heard Noah' story. Animal crackers and rain water Gatorade were enjoyed at snack time and a special olive tasting event was held. There was a special visitor one Sunday. A live white dove entertained the children with her curiosity of the children and her enjoyment of music time. There are plans for more special visitors of the canine variety. Two dogs, from animal rescue, are coming to help our children Learn about the stewardship of God's creatures He created for His enjoy-ment and ours. Come to Sunday Schools to see what we have in store for our next session. During Sundays in Advent, the Sunday School time will be devoted to preparations for the annual Children’s Christmas Pageant to be held during the 10:30 AM service on Sunday, December 20, 2009. Bring your child to Sunday School at 9:15 AM on Sundays, De-cember 6 & 13 to rehearse. Additional Saturday practices may be needed. Please contact Leah Jones for more information.
