Course DescriptionTake a reflective look at how technology

has changed the typical student. The first half of this session will examine

the paradigm shift in education and reveal the importance of technology integration to today’s digital natives.

The second half of this session will be an interactive look at how the use of iPads can enhance student learning and engagement.

My Philosophy on Technology Integration

I do not feel obligated to use technology every single day in each lesson.

My goal is to use technology to ENHANCE student learning. ◦ Technology is a tool, not fluff, not filler!◦ When used well, technology can boost student achievement by

keeping students engaged in what is relevant to them. I have to have an educational purpose for using the

technology. I am not afraid to not know everything about an app

or Web 2.0 program before I use it with students. I model learning and collaboration alongside my students.

Use the technology of the “culture” that your students are embedded within. You need to know what they use to be RELEVANT! Know their devices!!!◦ Are you on FaceBook? Twitter? Do you text? Do you know how

to use your phone well?

My Philosophy on Technology Integration

I am committed to knowing and experiencing what is “current” in the technology movement.◦ I am currently building a website, blog, and

consume books on my iPad. I research new apps to use in the classroom at home. I use my iPhone for its calendar function and to check my emails from multiple accounts. I do all of my shopping lists on my iPad and take it along with me shopping! I coupon using my iPad & iPhone. I do all of my scrapbooking online. The list goes ON and ON! I am committed!

How do you see technology integration in YOUR classroom?

Does YOUR paradigm need to shift?

The iPad Single most innovative technology tool to come to

education! Allows for differentiation of learning. Students are ENGAGED and EXCITED to use the

technology to learn. Touch screen allows for instant feedback. 100s of new educational apps enter the marketplace

daily.

Our 10 iPadsWrote a grant through QWEST in the fall of 2010 to

get 10 iPads to be used to enhance student achievement at the STEM Center.

Took about 10 hours to write up the grant and do the research involved in “making the case” for the technology.

Sought additional funding ($500) from the PTO to get a hard Pelican Case for the iPads and more money for paid apps.

The 10 iPads are shared among 3 teachers, and are only used by the 6th grade team.

Students established the “norms” for iPad use, and have really enjoyed the added engagement that it has brought to their learning.

How We Use the iPads to Enhance Student Learning

Math Remediation selected apps to help with measurement, math facts, and problem-solving.

Reading Fluency Several apps have been developed to help student increase reading fluency. They are timed as they read.

Word Work Students who work with words are more aware of how to use them in their writer’s craft. It’s also about strategy!

Problem-Solving Skills Strategy apps are HUGE for problem-solving skills. And the kids LOVE them!

TEAM use Since we only have 10 iPads, our activities with them often involve team activities.

Collaboration Using Today’s Meet especially! Can have discussions among the teams about subjects and have a recorded conversation!

Subject or Topic Focused Apps Based on big ideas/concepts in units, search apps to enhance understanding of a subject/topic of study. i.e. Ancient Civilizations, science concepts, survival, Everest, etc.

But Don’t Forget…

KIDS have technologies that they can bring into the classroom!◦ How can you use the iPod Touch?◦ How can you use Smart Phones/iPhones?◦ How can you use iPods/mp3 players?◦ How can you use e-readers?

FREE APPS are a great resource!◦ If you share an app with kids, they will more than

likely go and download it on their own!◦ THEN, when you have down time or option time,

you can focus the kids on using certain apps that meet your standards!

EXPLORE the apps on WF STEM’s iPads.Make a running list of apps that you think

you could use in your classroom and with which unit of study.

Be thinking about how you could use STUDENT resources to enhance the learning that happens in your classrooms.
