WE CELEBRATE BAPTISM Baptism is celebrated on two Sundays of the month at 1:30PM. Parents must come to the Rectory to complete a special registration form for Baptism. Upon completion of the form, a Baptism date will be given by Sr. Mary. Please do not make arrangements for a Baptism Celebration before you get a Baptism date from Sr. Mary, as we may not be able to grant any special requests for a particular date. Parents of first children are required to attend one Baptism Preparation Class (as well as parents who have never participated in a Baptism class). Registration for the Baptism Preparation Class can be made at the time the Registration Form for Baptism is completed with Sr. Mary.

WE CELEBRATE GOD’S FORGIVENESS The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is celebrated on Saturday from 3:20 PM – 4:20 PM. Parishioners should feel free to call to make an appointment for the Sacrament of Reconciliation at any other time.

WE CELEBRATE MARRIAGE Our Parish Pre-Cana Program prepares these couples for the responsibilities and joys of Christian marriage. It is necessary to arrange your wedding date with the Church at least six months in advance. Please call the Rectory (744-2609).

ANNULMENT – Reestablishing The Freedom To Marry An annulment can be described as a declara on of sacramental matrimonial invalidity. It is an official determina on made by an ecclesias cal court that at the

me of the marital consent exchanged by the par es a specific component of the marriage was lacking or defec ve. Hence, the marriage failed to be a sacramental marriage as defined by the Catholic Church. If you wish to reestablish your freedom to marry in the Church contact the Diocese of Rockville Centre. If you would first like to speak to someone who has been through this process, please contact Philip and Donna Liscia at: 631-942-4645.

WE MINISTER TO THE SICK AND HOMEBOUND If you are sick or homebound and would like to receive Communion at home, please call Sister Mary at the Rectory (744-2609).

Weekly Reflection SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME A God who judges with leniency and clemen-cy, a Spirit groaning because we know not how to pray, a patient master waiting to sepa-rate wheat and weeds, a tiny seed growing into a great bush, and the miracle of yeast and flour! All of these images found in our read-ings today speak of the unexpected, the coun-tercultural, and of the compassion and intima-cy of our relationship with God. Many times we are afraid to come to God in prayer, or we may turn away from our God because of our weakness and sinfulness. We are not presented with a vengeful God who is waiting to smite us, but a God of infinite love and wisdom and patience who will show us the way. What an amazing gift this is!

SAINT SHARBEL MAKHLŪF (1828-1898) July 24 The convenience store owner chatted animated-ly in Arabic with coworkers, but hardly at all with his American clientele. So soon after 9/11, he probably figured, with my accent, the less said, the better. That changed when an Ameri-can customer recognized Saint Sharbel’s portrait on the wall: “So you’re Lebanese Maronites!” The owner was happily incredulous: “You know our saint?” “Not at first,” the customer admitted. “But we help the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, and their magazine published that picture and called Sharbel the ‘Paradoxical Arti-san of Peace.’ ” “Everyone thinks we’re Mus-lims,” said the owner, “and some of my workers are. Saint Sharbel helps us live together in peace!” A hermit for twenty-three years, little is known of Sharbel’s life. He died after suffering a stroke while celebrating the liturgy. Miracles attributed to his intercession number in the thou-sands, and in war-torn Lebanon, Catholics, Or-thodox, and Muslims pray together where his incorrupt body is entombed. How lovely if after our passing, we too could be remembered for having brought very different people to the one God, together in peace. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD’S WORDS Each day we are bombarded with thousands of words. From the moment our clock radios click on in the morning, until the last moment of the day when the television is turned off or someone bids us “good-night,” our life is filled with words. Some words that we hear bring news that leaves us feeling low. Some words lift our spirits. Many of the words we hear are trying to get us to buy something. Some words are hurtful. Today the Church focuses our attention on hearing the word of God. Are God’s words just more of the same—part of the endless stream of words that flow into our ears each day? The chal-lenge today is to allow God’s word to inspire us in new ways so that our outlook and atti-tudes align themselves more closely with the heart and mind of Christ Jesus. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

WHAT IS OUR LEAVEN? In our own growth, something usually spurs us on and calls us to change. For a young couple who find out they are expecting, this may be the impetus to “grow up” and straighten out their spending habits. For an-other, perhaps a heart attack or prolonged ill-ness calls one to wake up and gives one a sec-ond chance at life. Losing a job or a spouse or surviving a car accident may mean it is time for a “do-over.” Isn’t it amazing to realize that we are blessed with a tender, loving God who will walk through all these changes in our lives, who is cajoling us into a better self? Here is a God who doesn’t pull the plug be-cause of our sins, but is willing to wait and sort and “gather the wheat.” Let us be grate-ful for this gift of loving mercy. Recall the simple prayer found in Psalm 86:15–16: “You, O Lord, are a God merciful and gra-cious, / slow to anger, abounding in kindness and fidelity. / Turn toward me, and have pity on me; / give your strength to your servant.” Copyright © J. Parish Outreach

During the summer months we typically run low on food to distribute to our families in need.

Could you possibly donate food items on Sunday when you come to Mass (basket is located in the

back of church) or bring them to the Outreach during the week? We find that we become low on items like cereals, canned stew/ravioli, tuna, rice mixes, spaghetti sauce, canned fruit, bever-ages, peanut butter and jelly. As always, please

make use of the sales and if there are two for one sales and you only need one, please consider

bringing the extra to the Outreach. We do have a refrigerator and freezer but those donations

would have to be brought directly to the Outreach when we are open.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUING GENEROSITY AND SUPPORT ON BEHALF

OF OUR BROTHERS AND SISTERS IN NEED!
