I’ve been thinking a lot about forgiveness lately. Generally, the act of forgiving is a healthy
one. Carrying grudges, maintain-ing rifts is bad for the soul if you believe in that kind of thing, and for the digestion whether you do or don’t. It feels good to let go.
But in the case of Robert Bruce Ford, interred yesterday, forgiveness becomes… prob-lematic. It’s not that he didn’t beg our forgiveness.
When he was still mayor, before cancer struck him, Rob Ford offered a fulsome apology for the behaviour he exhibited while under the influence of his alcohol addiction. He went so far as to apologize on television, in the summer of 2014, where he accepted “full responsibility” for his “poor judgement.” During that time, he’d been recorded saying an awful thing about his mayoral rival councillor Karen Stintz, and he apologized for that.
With that done, of course, he launched into an eyebrow-raising stump speech for his bid to be re-elected mayor then left with-out taking questions. But still: an apology is an apology, and it’s only good manners to accept it.
And even if he hadn’t apologized, there is still the generosity we all feel toward the terminally ill. Imagining ourselves at a dying man’s bedside, a long-held grudge becomes an unimaginable burden.
And so it feels good for us to absolve: to recall Rob Ford as a good bloke after all, whose sins were egged on by the demon rum; to conclude he was simply the mayor who loved Toronto too much; and that through it all, returning phone calls and posing for selfies, coaching high school footballers and hobnobbing with celebrities, he somehow did
great good for the city. That this doesn’t square with the histori-cal record is problematic. Indeed, it is significantly problematic, as our consideration of the Ford years is not simply a matter of the historical record.
In addition to a widow and two children, Ford leaves behind a political machine, in the form of Ford Nation: people who sup-ported him unquestioningly, and a political heir, in the form of his brother Doug Ford.
Earlier this week, Doug was front-and-centre at the visita-tion the family requested be held in the city hall rotunda, greeting well-wishers, embracing supporters and posing for the selfies with those in line. We all grieve in different ways, but to onlookers, it seemed an awful lot like campaigning.
And in the context of cam-paigning, the narrative of what really happened between 2010 and 2014 in the mayor’s office matters. The truth of that is that Rob Ford stepped off a well-run campaign and into a job that he bungled from nearly the begin-ning. At some point, booze and other drugs overtook him and made things worse.
But there is little evidence that he loved Toronto enough, never mind too much, and plenty of evidence that drunk or sober, he despised significant elements of the city. His accom-plishments – abolishing the car tax and the contracting out of some garbage collection – are few. The damage he did – to public transit, to the simple level of discourse – is considerable.
And for that, and many other things, he never once apolo-gized. As good as it might feel to grant, forgiveness is really not an option.
Trying to find forgiveness for the late Rob Ford
Money for transit, and pos-sibly more for housing. It was welcome news from
Ottawa last week, when newly minted Finance Minister Bill Morneau released the federal Liberal government’s first budget, and it included those two things.
Among other things, the budget pledged $3.4 billion in public transit investment across the country over the next three years. And an $11.9 billion infrastructure plan will allow for federal funding of housing.
Both of these announcements are good for Toronto, which needs major investment in both areas, and has for many years.
With the exception of the late former mayor Rob Ford, everyone occu-
pying the Toronto mayor’s office has agreed that the federal government needs to engage in the direct financing of municipal needs – housing and tran-
sit in particular. But mayoral advo-
cacy has only ever achieved partial suc-cess, and often none at all.
Count this year’s budget as another partial win.
Toronto stands to get a sizeable portion of the federal transit funding, as the alloca-
tion will be based on ridership and the Toronto Transit Commission’s ridership is formidable.
But 26 per cent – the share that Mayor John Tory’s office estimates will come to the city on that basis – is still only $884 million.
The Toronto Transit Commission’s state of good repair backlog currently
sits at $2.7 billion. Similarly, it’s hard to imagine federal
infrastructure money, which will be divided more equitably, will get Toronto very far in completing the $2.6 billion repair backlog in Toronto Community Housing.
Will there be more money in future budgets?
One might hope so, particularly as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Morneau have signalled that they’re not going to be shy when it comes to running deficits higher than usual.
But we shouldn’t confuse hope with expectation, and Toronto needs to accept that it will be, at least to some degree, on its own – with maybe, just maybe, a bit more help from the cash-strapped provincial government.
That means that later this year, when Toronto considers new revenue tools, councillors will need to look very seriously at the options. We’ve been given a boost. But we’ll have to climb the rest of the way ourselves.
Toronto welcomes federal budget boost for transit, maybe housing

The abstructionistsbring art to the residents of the Liberty market LoftsArtist Andrew Stelmack says bringing art to Toronto’s condo lobbies is a win for everyone
Condominium lobbies exist for three reasons: To get to your apartment, to leave your apartment building and to get your mail. Lobbies essentially are thoroughfares most people rarely spend time in, but at Liberty Market Lofts in Liberty Village, they’ve turned their lobby into a destination rather than a pit stop with a built-in art gallery.“We live in a great city, it’s got lots of culture and art is a part of that and it’s a beautiful way to express and blend cultures,” said Allen Benjamin, the Liberty Market Lofts condo board president, who helps bring in artists for the lobby’s art gallery. “So why not bring that experience to where you spend most of your time – at home?” “It’s one of the reasons why I actually bought into this building. It’s a key feature to have, it’s pretty unique.”Positioned right in front of the building’s elevators are five walls covered in art from the Toronto-based collective The Abstructionists, the first of three exhibits to be featured in the Liberty Market Lofts. The group consists of four abstract artists who will have their work displayed until April 28.So far the collective has shown its work in a handful of galleries including two other buildings in Liberty Village. The collective consists of Emily Milla, Kael Racioppa, Robert Slivchak and Andrew Stelmack.“I think it’s better than a lot of the galleries I’ve seen,” Stelmack said. “They’ve made a beautiful space. It’s light, it brings in a lot of natural light, it’s airy and it’s built for artwork. When I saw it I was like, ‘Are you kidding me, this is great’.”For Stelmack, having an art gallery in a condo lobby is a fantastic way to bring the art to the people. It’s also crucial, he said, for artists, since many galleries are closing due to high rent and condo developers buying the buildings they’re in.“We’re losing the artist space, but we’re also losing the art because we have nowhere to show it. All the galleries downtown are closing. They’re hopping up to the Junction, but once the Junction gets trendy and they (galleries) can’t afford it, then where are they going to go?” Stelmack asked. “So this developer has said, ‘We can do something for our building and also do something for what we’ve taken away.’ And it’s given us a place to show our art again.”Each month new art will be added to the gallery to keep the content fresh. There’s also a meet-the-artist night on the first Tuesday of the month that’s open for residents and their guests to attend. The gallery is open to anyone in the neighbourhood.

And the art could also be set up beyond condo lobbies, Stelmack said.“We can come for a day or for a weekend and have an event in the party room. We can set it up there, and we’d bring the art to you,” Stelmack said. “Why not make it easy for them (people) to see the art? Why not bring the art to these built-in audiences? It’s a great concept.”It’s a model Stelmack said he believes should be adopted by established condos and soon-to-be built highrises in the city as a chance to keep the art community vibrant and alive. “The city needs these (art galleries) badly. We always go to these places that the artists have made hip and cool and interesting...And that’s awesome, but in the process of gentrifying it or ‘making it better’ (it) means they (the city) tear it (the gallery) down or rental prices go up and soon all the artists are gone,” Stelmack explained.“Where does someone go downtown to see art when the galleries are disappearing so fast?”Artists, too, have to change, Stelmack said.Artists will need to start thinking digital. Artists need to turn to social media including Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, which are becoming the additional galleries of today’s 21st century artist. “It used to be you needed to get into a gallery and the gallery sold your work. That was your exposure, that was the primary way. Now, if I’m in a gallery, all they do is look at my name, Google it, go to my website and contact me,” Stelmack explained.“More sales are happening through me. We’re lucky in some ways because artists are now empowered and have the control to sell their art.”But art galleries in lobbies could also be the way of the future for artists in the city; at least Stelmack said he hopes so.“If we can be smart enough to use all of this mundane, boring dead space that sits in almost every massive lobby in all of these condos around the city, with more to come, and turn it into an opportunity to show art, to express art and also use it as a place for the community to meet and bring people together, it’s absolutely a win-win-win,” Stelmack said. The Abstructionists: An Art Exhibition of Abstract Art runs until April 28 at 5 Hanna Ave. in Liberty Village. For more information, visit www.abstructionists.com

Where he can be found: The Drake
Hotel, 1150 Queen St. W.
Length of bartending career: Two
years
About Alex: He grew up in Jamaica
where his parents owned a restaurant.
He worked after school. He moved to
Aurora from Jamaica and worked in the
school’s cafeteria and then moved to
the city where he worked at various
restaurants. He progressed to front
of house staff and began learning the
art of bartending and landed at The
Drake Hotel two years ago.
What is in your qualifying drink? We
were each given a spirit, mine was Jack
Daniel’s Honey, and a fruit, my fruit
was papaya...Jack Daniel’s Honey is
a bit funky so I wanted to enhance
the honey flavours so I paired it with
some Appleton Estate rum, threw some
ginger beer in it, fresh lime juice and
Angostura bitters.
What’s the secret to making an
award-winning drink? Knowledge
of your ingredients. You should be
able to know everything about all the
spirits you’re working with. Also, just
confidence in your drink. (In a) lot of
the competitions, I find that it’s mostly
about how you portray yourself to the
judges and the confidence you bring
to letting them believe this is the best
thing they’re going to taste all night.
What’s your favourite drink to kick
back and relax with? Negroni. It’s
equal parts gin, sweet vermouth and
Campari. Campari is one of my fav
spirits and I love insanely bitter drinks
so it is on the bitter side, but its super
well balanced.
Do you prefer to be called a bar-
tender or mixologist? Bartender for
sure. A bartender, I feel, is someone
who is very personable. I say 90 per
cent of people who go to a bar go for
the experience, not just the drink.
What drink are you known for?
There’s one called the Rum Diary
that incorporate Florida Cana Rum
and winter five spice, with a bit of
apple brandy, some ginger beer and
mango.
Where he can be found: Miss Things,
1279 Queen St. W.
Length of bartending career: about
Three years at Miss Things
About Aaron: He worked with comput-
ers, but soon realized bartending was
his passion.
What is in your qualifying drink? My
black box had Sky Vodka and pomegran-
ate. The drink I came up with included
those two mystery items and I added
Campari, orange bitters, simple syrup,
one whole egg and a maple-scorched
orange rind. A Last Minute Smash is
what I’m going to call it.
What is your favourite drink to kick
back and relax with? It’s hard to say,
but it depends on my mood. I like my
drinks to be more spirit forward. If I
was going to pick one it’d be a Vieux
Carré. It’s equal parts rye whiskey, rye
Cognac, sweet vermouth a bar spoon
(teaspoon) of Bénédictine and bit
of Angostura bitters. It’s incredibly
smooth and round and the mouth feel
is great.
Do you prefer to be called a mixolo-
gist or bartender? I prefer to be called
a bartender... Being a mixologist is part
of what I do. But that’s only 40 per
cent of what I do. I am a bartender,
and I’m a host and I’m an entertainer.
Mixologists make drinks. Bartenders
make experiences. I like to create an
experience from the minute you sit
on our stool.
How did you get into bartending? I
attended a cocktail competition almost
three years ago at the Mixing Star by
DiSaronno...I went and did my presenta-
tion. At the end of it, one guy said he
really liked what I did, you got some
great skills. He said, ‘I’m looking for a
head bartender, the job is yours if you
want let’s meet and talk about it.’
What drink are you known for’?
It’s called the Bartender’s Phone
Number. It was a drink I made with elder
flower liqueur, bourbon, fresh green
grapes, egg whites and lime juice. It was
really crisp and refreshing and fruity
without being sweet, garnished it with a
cluster of green grapes hanging off the
side. It was extremely refreshing and
enjoyable and extremely popular.
Local bartenders Aaron Male and Alex Pearce are head-
ing to the Made With Love Mixology Toronto regional
finals at the Liberty Grand Monday.
The pair competed in a black box mixed drink challenge
at the Track & Field bar on College Street in January to
qualify for this competition. Each group of three was
given two secret ingredients to include in their drink
with access to a small bar. Competitors were given
five minutes to create a winning cocktail.
