Practice Makes Perfect? Michelle Coberly, Executive Director I know you’ve all heard the saying that practice makes perfect, and yes, with enough practice comes perfection. In the last few weeks we’ve had the opportunity to continue to perfect our Emergency Preparedness Plan. In the November Villager, I shared with you how we coordinated with local fire departments and emergency responders to give them an opportunity to learn our campus and for us to practice our emergency plans. This came in very handy during two challenges for our campus during February. The first was a Village Center apartment fire caused by a small appliance. While this occurred on a Saturday, we were able to provide the quick response that was required. The second was an unexplained power outage due to wire coating that failed and shorted out. While power outages are typically handled by our emergency generator, this outage also impacted it. Once again, the PH Team pulled together quickly, including staff from the PH corporate office, Home Care, and Sunshine Transportation. There was a well-coordinated effort between staff and vendors to restore power as quickly as possible and to notify residents/families to ensure safety for all. Fortunately, there were no injuries with either incident. So, are we now perfect? While that is our goal, we are continuing to strive for perfection at this point. However, with these two opportunities, we know we are getting closer to achieving our goal!

Living Your Best Life at Porter Hills Maegan Garlock, Wellness Director When you move in to Porter Hills Village, we try our best to provide all of the information you need to make a successful transition. We recognize that there is so much that goes into a move that some topics don’t stick until long after you are settled into your new home. In February, participants learned that the Porter Hills family extends deeply and in diverse ways into our community. There are so many services available for people wherever they are located. Our next topic will cover “What Services Are Available To Me?” Join us on Thursday, March 20
th in the Towne Square at 3:30pm. Marcy
Emmelkamp will provide details on health, dining, and environmental services available to you and how to request them. Living Your Best Life at Porter Hills Village discussions will continue to be held on the third Thursday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the Towne Square. While these presentations are geared toward our newest residents, family members and other Porter Hills Village residents are also invited to attend. Future topics include: “What Happens in an Emergency,” “How Does My Family Get Involved,” and more! Please see me if you have any questions.

Protect Your Vision as You Age Sara West, Wellness Intern March is national nutrition and save your vision month. As we age, our eyes are prone to more problems like cataracts, overall reduced vision, and age-related macular degeneration. Wise lifestyle choices and regular eye exams can protect your vision as you age. Eye healthy foods include those rich in antioxidants, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Examples are carrots, berries, and citrus fruits, like oranges. Leafy green vegetables and fish are also beneficial because they contain helpful omega-3 fatty acids. Exercise can also help improve eye health. Physical activity improves blood circulation and oxygen supply to the eyes, which helps the body keep them clean and healthy. It is also important to remember your sun-glasses when going outside, to prevent the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Remember to make annual eye exams a priority, eat right, and exercise to keep your eyes healthy!
Race to the Top Heather Knouse, Wellness Coordinator, Independent Living To help get ready for summer and beat the winter blues, you should make physical activity part of your daily routine! Porter Hills Village is helping residents and staff reach their fitness goals by hosting a Residents vs. Staff Competition during the month of March. Help your team earn points by attending a fitness class, exercising in the Martindill Wellness Center, or exercising on your own. Every 5 minutes of cardio exercise will earn your team 1 point, so every time you walk from your room to an activity around campus, you can earn points for your team! Don’t forget to record your name each time you visit the Martindill Wellness Center; the binder is kept outside of the fitness room. You can also record your points by calling me at 954-1799 ext. 10235 or Jocelyn Bunce, Fitness Specialist, at 954-1799 ext. 10250. All participants will be rewarded with a frozen yogurt party in April and the top participants will win a prize!
Volunteers Ana Galloway, Volunteer Services Coordinator Do you have some extra time you would like to share with friends? We have a weekly volunteer opening on Tuesday afternoons in the Village Center Coffee Shop from 2:30-4:00 p.m. If you want a more casual volunteer opportunity, you can join our substitute list. Volunteers on the substitute list serve less often, but are a big help! Volunteers are also needed in the Emporium! With your help, we would like to open the Emporium each afternoon. Volunteers are needed from 3:00-4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons. Weekly and substitute volunteers welcome. If you have any questions about volunteer opportunities, please contact me at 954-1799 ext. 10233.

Chaplain’s Corner Two hats were hanging on a hat rack. One hat said to the other, “You stay here, I’ll go on a head.” Okay, that’s a terrible joke. Sometimes puns just appeal to me. This one about hats actually makes a point. We have a couple of options in life: either to park, or to drive….either to hang out where we have always been, or to go on ahead.
March is a great time to consider the importance of the second option. Time is marching forward, even in this young year of 2014. We can’t change that. Our response, however, is up to us. Do we march forward, or do we try to stay put?
I confess that I join you in being somewhat nostalgic about the way many things used to be. The truth of the matter is that not all of the “good old days” were that good. Senior citizen blogger, Frank Kaiser, writes: “The good old days meant…hard to push lawn mowers, polio, and widespread prejudice. All in all, I’ll take todays’ life anytime. Indoor plumbing and lifesaving drugs make that an easy choice!”
Here’s the point: that which was strong and good in the past need not be abandoned when we embrace the future. The lessons we learned live on, even if the people who taught them do not. The core values that were bred in us need not disappear because the world around us is changing. Right is still right, truth is still truth, faith, love and kindness are still our highest virtues. Our challenge is simply to take all that was good from the good old days and use it as equipment to create good new days. We need to continue to confess the goodness that God consistently provides in this changing world. Frank Kaiser is right, there are new inventions, new medical options, and new inventions that are truly good things. God is blessing those of us who, as Jesus put it, “have eyes to see.”
So, as we are the “hats” that go on ahead, let’s look back with thanks and move forward with faith. Learn from yesterday to be prepared for tomorrow. Borrow from yesterday to build tomorrow. Look back with gratitude, and then move forward with anticipation.
Spring is just around the corner!
Faithfully,
Melody Pierce Johnson
