Temporary footpath diversion near Village Hall Those of you who use it regularly will already know that the footpath opposite Minsterworth School passes through the Affordable Housing construction site. For safety reasons the path will be diverted during the period of works, exact diversion TBC. It will be re-routed after completion of the housing.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November, The Gunpowder Treason and Plot, I know of no reason Why the gunpowder treason Should ever be forgot. Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent To blow up the King and Parli’ment. Three-score barrels of powder below To prove old England’s overthrow; By God’s providence he was catch’d With a dark lantern and burning match. Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring. Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!” ― Alan Moore, V for Vendetta

Everyone’s a Photographer!

Hi. I’m Bob Holder, and I’m a semi-professional photographer. I moved to Minsterworth around 6 months ago. I am passionate about all aspects of photography, and would like to share my knowledge and experience by forming the Minsterworth Photographic Club, where everyone, regardless of camera type, experience or ability, is more than welcome.

I propose to run the club in Minsterworth Village Hall, initially twice a month, hopefully starting in November.

In order for me to get an understanding of numbers, can you please e-mail me at the address below to let me know if you are interested? The evenings will consist of talks, demonstrations and practice sessions, as well as studio sessions (and in the warmer months, outings to local venues) to further practice your new-found skills!

In addition, there will be six rounds of photographic competitions, leading to an annual competition, and hopefully, contests with other photographic clubs.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have much experience, if you have a camera of any type (including a phone or tablet!) you would be very welcome to come and see how you can improve your skills and understanding of all aspects of photography.

I hope to see you soon!

Visit to Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard

Sunday 17th September 2017 I would like to thank all of you who supported our super day. Because of your enthusiasm and generosity we were able to raise in excess of £500 for the Royal British Legion. The magnificent amount was achieved by tickets purchased for the visit to the dockyard, raffle prizes, eleven in total, and a number of donations.

Those of us who took the 40 minute harbour boat tour were amazed at the size of our latest aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth 2 which was moored alongside the jetty.

In all a really superb day and a very big thank you again for all your support.

Terry Bourne Chairman Minsterworth R.B.L.

Please be advised that this year’s Royal British Legion Remembrance Service is at Westbury Church on Sunday November 12th. * *

Alternatively, Minsterworth Garage have again said they will hold leaflets for you to collect and that they will be happy to accept completed boxes to pass on to us.

Gift suggestions for a child are: Hygiene items – school writing equipment and paper – a soft toy – a small ball – puzzle - jewellery – hair accessories – sweets – hat, scarf and gloves - new socks/underwear.

Or you may prefer to fill a shoebox for the family. Gift suggestions are: Candles – t-towels – plastic utensils – bowls and cups – soap – washing up cloths – clothes pegs

We will once again be collecting shoe boxes at the beginning of November – leaflets and boxes can be collected / dropped off at Minsterworth Garage until the 3rd November and Elaine/Jayne will be at Westbury on Severn School to receive boxes 3rd November between 10.00am and 12.00pm.

"November comes And November goes, With the last red berries And the first white snows. With night coming early, And dawn coming late, And ice in the bucket And frost by the gate. The fires burn And the kettles sing, And earth sinks to rest Until next spring." - Elizabeth Coatsworth

MINSTERWORTH READING GROUP

The October meeting looked at ‘The Little Red Chairs’ by Edna O’Brien.

The story is about Vlad... a stranger who appears one day in a small Irish village and sets up as a Healer. Locals fall under his spell, especially Fidelma McBride, who begs him to father a child with her. The atmosphere gradually becomes more and more sinister until suddenly one day Vlad is arrested for war crimes. Fidelma comes to understand the truth of what really happened, which emerges when she goes to London and works with displaced migrants... then she eventually goes to The Hague to attend some trials and is shocked by the reality of what happened.

Apparently Edna O’Brien actually attended some of the trials and felt that it was important that somebody wrote about it and that people realised what could and did happen. Some readers felt they couldn’t finish the book, others did and were shocked by what people could be capable of. It led to a lot of debate but it was certainly not a bedtime read.

Our next book is ‘The Enchanted April’ by Elizabeth von Arnim, which we will review on Wednesday 1st November in Minsterworth Village Hall. Nicky Milligan
