Hello Parrots, I have seen the pictures and heard the stories and I can’t believe I didn’t join the Parrot Head club and go to the big birthday party. You can be sure, I will join next month and I WILL see you all at the party next year! Save me a chair, Larry & Joyce, Englewood

Dear Parrot Staff, Looking at some of the other publications and newspapers around town, it seems to me like they may be trying to imitate you. I guess it is the best form of flattery! Keep up the great work! Cheers!Dave T. Pt Charlotte

Hello All, First, I love your paper! Its always so colorful and fun! I wanted to thank you for featuring the Boogiemen Band. I have been listening to them for years, but never knew their story. I truly enjoyed it and now I imagine I will enjoy their performances even more! Dawn D. Punta Gorda

Dear Dip Chick c/o The Parrot Magazine, I met you at the farmers market in North Port purchased the salsa mix and tried the recipe listed in The Parrot. It was delicious! I hope this will be a regular column, I look forward to other recipes, it really was so fast and easy! Maybe you should think about doing a cook book. Thank you!Tracy, B North Port

Little Larry attended a horse auc-tion with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse’s legs and rump, and chest. After a few minutes, Larry asked, ‘Dad, why are you doing that?’ His father replied, ‘Because when I’m buy-ing horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy. Larry, look-ing worried, said, ‘Dad, I think the UPS guy wants to buy Mom ....’

Larry’s kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. ‘Yes,’ said the policeman ‘The detectives want very badly to capture him. Larry asked, “Why didn’t you keep him when you took his picture ? “

A police officer stops a blonde for speeding and asks her very nicely if he could see her license. She replied in a huff, ‘I wish you guys would get your act togeth-er. Just yesterday you take away my license and then today you expect me to show it to you!’

It was unfortunate when Cujo showed up on my doorstep unannounced after one of his many mental institution vaca-tions. Unsure if he had escaped or was mistakenly released from the asylum, I really mean it when I say that I couldn’t locate my brown corduroy trousers fast enough. With a no pet clause in my rental agreement, and a bottle of booze, I lured the already loaded certified crack-pot into my car and dumped him off at the house of the voodoo practitioner in Bahama Village.

Now you’re probably thinking that I’m the crackpot here but, wait a minute people, we’re talking about Cujo – King of Hor-rogami! Since I’ve had the displeasure of knowing the dirty low life he’s been involved in two kidnapping schemes, smuggled drugs, shot, stabbed, jailed, escaped from jail, broke back into jail, institutionalized, medicated, electro-shocked, and the only person I’ve ever known to be bitten by a friendly Labrador Retriever. If that doesn’t constitute a little assistance from voodoo, well, I guess I don’t know what does. The next day it was business as usual.

The rent overdue and I was so far behind the eight ball that I wondered if I should even bother trying to make the Herald’s deadline. Unable to clear my head from the night’s fiasco I can only say that I too must have been out of my freakin’ mind when I decided to put the mess down on paper for the world to scrutinize. When Sunday’s paper hit the streets I had not yet had my first Bloody Mary before the answering machine began fill-ing with messages that my good gonzo reputation was down the crapper and that social services had their Depends in a wad over my lack of sensitivity toward the insane. I probably should be writing in an attempt to redeem my good name but lack of space prevents it. However, I would like to apologize for my callous insensitivity and say that I feel bad for dumping Cujo off on that Voodoos’ doorstep—that poor voodoo lady. Before I’m sent to the gallows please

just hear me out. (Hoping this doesn’t come off sounding too much like a Jerry Springer episode) I am a survivor of ten traumatic years in the Catholic school system where once a week, every week, my religion class would hike over to St. Paul’s Catholic Church for mass. But, unlike the other students, when it came time to take part in the eating of the body of Christ I was never allowed to participate even though I continually expressed my desire to do so since it fell around lunch time. Even worse than going hungry on hump day was the fear of the yardstick wielding nun who each day loomed over my desk and terrorized me with going to hell. The other children looked at me as if I suf-fered a contagious disease. I cried every afternoon on my way home to Audrey’s Satellite Lounge. The point being, regardless of the tor-mented years of my youth, I try and live life by the golden rule but if I were as de-mented as Cujo I would pray for some sort of intervention before the slow ridin’ and sad singin’ occurred, if you get my drift. Have I mentioned that Cujo cashed in his ninety-nine year old mother’s burial policy while she was on her deathbed? When Hurricane Katrina blew through the Florida Keys I checked myself in on the sixth floor of the La Concha Ho-tel – the highest point in Key West and central storm headquarters for media, police and the ghost of Hemingway. I was lying in bed staring up at the ceiling, which was leaking like a sieve, watching a plaster bubble that had swelled to the size of a soccer ball when the lights went out. Now I’m no genius but no electricity means no air conditioning, no food, no elevators, no ice and no cold beer. Hat-ing to miss the bursting of the bubble I humped it down the ten flights of stairs looking to find a little hurricane party ac-tion. By the time I reached the final flight I was swearing that I was going to quit smok-ing when I stepped off the last stair onto the rain-soaked marble floor of the lobby and was thrown feet first into the air. It couldn’t have hurt worse if Hulk Hogan had body slammed me onto the con-crete stairs—so much for the Wilson Duval nonskid deck shoes. Instantly sick

to my stomach, I suppressed the urge to vomit. It’s a wonder the fall didn’t break my back or crack open my skull. Grow-ing up my parents accused me of being hardheaded—it has paid off.Gathering my senses I limped over to the bar where I took a window seat to watch Katrina do her thing. Drunken tourists par-tying in the middle of the street seemed oblivious to the unhinged metal street signs slicing every which way down Du-val. Hotel patrons were placing bets on whether there would be a decapitation when one of the knuckleheads began to resemble someone I thought I knew. Thinking it was a hallucination brought on by head trauma I said a quick prayer nevertheless. “Oh Lord, please don’t let that extra-large green Hefty garbage bag raising hell in the winds and the rains of a hurricane be Cujo.”Suddenly the howl-ing wind took a nasty turn and blew the laughing bag of trash into my direction. It was Cujo all right and he was as drunk as the infamous Cooter Brown. A tear trickled down my face. Why couldn’t that have been Johnny Depp?Cujo’s one

blue eye was red, his one green eye was red and both eyes were spinning round in his head like a Las Vegas roulette wheel on a Saturday night. He offered me a drink but I’ve known him to drink rubbing alcohol so I passed. My head was throbbing harder now that Cujo was on the scene and I was in real need of a vicodin. Because there was no electricity there was no liquor for sale on the island so I demanded Cujo give up his source for booze. “It was a gift from the Gods!” he shouted as he raised the near empty glass toward the heavens. With a little more prodding the fool came

clean. “All right already!” he begrudgingly growled. “Some tiki bar down the street left the Jagermeister machine on.” For the sake of hard times I couldn’t walk away without knowing how someone tells when a Jagermiester machine has been left on, so I asked. “Duhhh Sam-mie!” he said spraying the liquor dripping

from his scraggly untrimmed mustache into my face. “The light was on!”I was wiping the spittle from my face when the door burst open and an angry looking bait camp woman with large cypress tree trunk legs muscled her way in through the overcrowded bar. Dressed in match-ing extra-large Hefty bag attire was none other than Cujo’s partner in crime Jala-peña Lena! Thinking back on that day I remember it being hard to tell if Cujo was happy to see Jalapeña or that full glass of Jager-meister she was carrying. Their greeting was primitive. They slobbered, stag-gered and slurred inaudible words while looking into one another’s glass to make sure they shared equal parts of alcohol. Watching the spectacle I couldn’t help but wonder if Son of Cujo would become a Steven King sequel. It wasn’t long before the rain and the Jagermeister stopped pouring and with it their affection for one another dried up as well. Cujo called Jalapeña “halitosis” and she took off a smelly athletic shoe and whacked him upside the head with it. Curious to see if the shoe had a sobering effect, at a safe distance I followed the gluttons on their crawl through Old Town. The two stag-gered along at the same pace with Cujo on one side of the street and Jalapeña Lena cursing a blue streak in drunken broken French on the other.Meeting his match and seemingly wanting to escape the wrath of the ragin’ Cajun when Cujo reached the dock at Schooner Wharf, without hesitating, he lepted into the churning waters of the Gulf of Mexico—and Jalapeña Lena followed! Now let this be a lesson especially to all you do-gooders who want to try and save Cujo, just like Jalapeña Lena, you too may find yourself up to your neck in it—so to take a page from brother gonzo jour-nalist Hunter S. Thompson, “f*@% the doomed!” “Mayor Gonzo Mays” a.k.a. Dear Tide,I am writing to say what an ex-cellent product you have. I’ve used it all of my married life, as my Mom always told me it was the best. Now that I am in my fif-ties I find it even better! In fact, about a month ago, I spilled some red wine on my new white blouse. My inconsiderate and uncaring husband started to belittle me about how clumsy I was, and generally started be-coming a pain in the neck. One thing led to another and some-how I ended up with his blood on my new white blouse! I grabbed my bottle of Tide with bleach al-ternative, to my surprise and sat-isfaction, all of the stains came out! In fact, the stains came out so well the detectives who came by yesterday told me that the DNA tests on my blouse were negative and then my attorney called and said that I was no lon-ger considered a suspect in the disappearance of my husband. What a relief! Going through menopause is bad enough with-out being a murder suspect! I thank you, once again, for hav-ing a great product. Well, gotta go, have to write to the Hefty bag people.

A Woman’s Yearly Exam I went to the doctor for my year-ly physical. The nurse started with certain basics.

“How much do you weigh?” she asked. “135,” I said. The nurse put me on the scale. It turns out my weight is 180.The nurse asked, “Your height?” “5 foot 4,” I said. The nurse checked and saw that I only measure 5’ 2” She then took my blood pressure and told me that it is very high. “Of course it’s high!” I screamed, ‘When I came in here I was tall and slender! Now I’m short and fat!”She put me on Prozac. What a witch!

Four married guys go fishing. Af-ter an hour, the following conver-sation took place: First guy: You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I would paint every room in the house next weekend..’ Second guy: That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I would build her a new deck for the pool.’ Third guy: Man , you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife that I would remodel the kitchen for her.’ They continue to fish. When they realized that the fourth guy has not said a word, they asked him, “You haven’t said anything about what you had to do to be able to come fishing this week-end. What’s the deal?” Fourth guy: I just set my alarm for 5:30 am. When it went off, I shut off my alarm, Gave the wife a slap

A girl was visiting her blonde friend, who had acquired two new dogs, and asked her what their names were. The blonde responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was named Timex. Her friend said, ‘Whoever heard of someone naming dogs liketh-at?’ ‘HELLLOOOOOOO.......,’ an-swered the blonde. ‘They’re watch dogs’!

A Russian, an American, and a Blonde were talking one day. The Russian said, ‘We were the first in space!’ The American said, ‘We were the first on the moon!’ The Blonde said, ‘So what? We’re going to be the first on the sun!’ The Russian and the American looked at each other and shook their heads. ‘You can’t land on the sun, you idiot! You’ll burn up!’ said the Russian. A blond teenager, wanting to earn some extra money for the summer, decided to hire herself out as a “handy-woman” and started can-vassinga nearby well-to-do neighbor-

“Well, I guess I could use some-body to paint my porch,” he said, “Howmuch will you charge me?”

Delighted, the girl quickly re-sponded, “How about $50?”

The man agreed and told her that the paint brushes and every-thing shewould need was in the garage. The man’s wife, hearing theconversation said to her hus-band, “Does she realize that our porchgoes ALL the way around the house?” He responded, “That’s a bit cyni-cal, isn’t it?”

The wife replied, “You’re right. I guess I’m starting to believe allthose dumb blond jokes we’ve been getting by email lately.”

Later that day, the blond came to the door to collect her money.

“You’re finished already?” the startled husband asked.

“Yes, the blond replied, and I even had paint left over, so I gave it two coats.”Impressed, the man reached

Written by Charlotte Lanier aka Charlie Rose

Hey Charlotte Harbor Parrotheads, what tiiiiiime is it? It’s time to ask “where the hell does the time go?” Yours truly is already into her second full year of writing for the Parrot Magazine. Wow! Time does fly when you’re having rum! J

We had our “Behind Door #3” Birthday Party over Labor Day weekend, and my, what a time!! Joe Cracker took excellent care of us Friday night while we danced the night away with the Jack Mosley Band. We had a 50/50 drawing and Let’s Make a Deal with many participants dressing up for the occasion (my roomie didn’t make a very good deal…she ended up with a bag of shells!).

Saturday’s pool party was wonderful as always (thanks to Fig & Co for lunch). Saturday night at the Cultural Center of Charlotte County we had a helluva layout with plenty of room and some great food. Linda Harrison did a phenomenal job with the silent auction which alone raised almost $3000…and on her own birthday, to boot. There were tables decorated to the nines (I apologize for not writing down who won…they were all great), and people dancing to the tunes of Capt. Josh then Jim Morris and the Big Bamboo Band.

This years Sunday Songwriters Spectacular at the Nav-a-gator put last years to shame. All of our 12+ Trop Rock artists kicked ass. I think everyone agreed Jack’s original song was the best (it was about CHPHC again so it just had to “win”), but all the artists got together at the end and sang their own “written that day” version of Changes in Latitude. It was quite humorous. There were lots of walk-ins at $10 a head so we raised a lot of money for charity. All in all another great Nav-a-gator afternoon.

The CHPHC Board of Directors presented Dennis & Nancy Kirk with an actual CHPHC Behind Door #3 door to show our appreciation for all they do to support us. Kudos also go out to our sponsors Terry & Marianne Higgins (Sun-Fire Nurseries),

the Kirks (Nav-a-gator), Mosaic, the McBrides (and they weren’t even able to attend), Squid, the Lehns family businesses along with all of our table sponsors. And a huge shout out to Linda Grother and the staff at the Holiday Inn Express and George our driver. They were all great. And though these numbers are probably a little low (final accounting is not completed), we raised over $5000 for the Peace River Wildlife Center and over $1500 for the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches.

Very quickly, our last meeting was September 14th. We had Tequila Tom doing a fine job on stage, John Livecchi winning $187 in the 50/50 contest, and Tracey Willoughby, Fig Newton and Mary Gurley winning the “school spirit” contest during the meeting. Hey Tracey, Gooooooooo Gators!! Sorry, had to throw that in there. We also had lots of “back to school” donations

for the kiddies, along with the pop-tops, pill bottles and cans. Thanks go out to everyone who takes the time to collect these items. It might be “garbage” to us, but I for one am glad it’s all being used and not ending up in a landfill.

OK, that’s it for now. Our website is www.chphc.com. If you want to join this crazy club you can print out an app and mail it or join us at the next meeting, the second Tuesday of the month at the Coral Rock Tiki Bar (NE corner of Kings Hwy & US41). Some folks start getting there around 5:30 - the “official stuff” starts around 6:00. And remember, “Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been”.

Halloween:Halloween Holiday Trivia* Orange and black are Halloween colors because orange is associated with the Fall harvest and black is as-sociated with darkness and death.* Jack o’ Lanterns originated in Ireland where people placed candles in hol-lowed-out turnips to keep away spirits and ghosts on the Samhain holiday. * Pumpkins also come in white, blue and green. Great for unique monster carvings!* Halloween was brought to North America by immigrants from Europe who would celebrate the harvest around a bonfire, share ghost stories, sing, dance and tell fortunes.* Tootsie Rolls were the first wrapped penny candy in America.* The ancient Celts thought that spirits and ghosts roamed the countryside on Halloween night. They began wearing masks and costumes to avoid being recognized as human.* Halloween candy sales average about 2 billion dollars annually in the United States.* Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers #1.* Halloween is the 2nd most commer-cially successful holiday, with Christ-mas being the first.* Bobbing for apples is thought to have originated from the roman harvest fes-tival that honors Pamona, the goddess of fruit trees.* It was originally a pagan holiday, honoring the dead. Holloween was re-ferred to as All Hallows Eve and dates back to over 2000 years ago.

Mercers’ Coffee Corner

PROPER PORTION:THE KEY TO GOOD COFFEE

The bottom line is that brewing good coffee requires adherence to a specific formula. Guessing and skimping doesn’t work. It takes a little calculation to apply this for-mula to your own particular coffee maker. A good coffee bar or restaurant will weigh each batch of ground coffee before brewing. Individual coffees vary greatly in volume. For example, dark roasts are less dense and contain less soluble material then lighter varieties. Especially Indone-sians.

THE FORMULA

A standard restaurant pot is 64 ounces or ½ gallon of water. To make good coffee, this weight of coffee must be between 3.5 and 4.25 ounces of dry coffee. To actu-ally arrive at this formula, you would need to figure out how many ounces of water your individual coffee pot holds, divide by six, then multiply that number by nine. (EXAMPLE) A standard coffee pot for residential use is usually around 40 ounces of water. Divide that number by 6, which would be 6.6 multiply that by 9 which will give you the exact amount of coffee in grams per pot of coffee. So until next month, happy brewing!

Any Questions?

Motor Trend, March 2010“If you’re in the market for a fullsize luxury SUV with all the latest techno-logical wizardry designed to make driving it easier, look no further.”Motor Trend, May 2010“Is there a better SUV in this category? Perhaps not.” PopularMechanics.com, May 2010“There's lots of such technical and electronic wizardry to entertain and assist the driver even on the standard equipment list.”Automobilemag.com, May 2010“Get into the cabin of a Cadillac Escalade after driving the new QX56, and its shapes, its forms, its surfaces, and its textures will suer by compari-son.” Edmunds' Inside Line, May 2010“By far the most signicant improve-ment in the 2011 Inniti QX56 comes in the quality of the furnishings."Motor Trend, May 2010“Body roll is, indeed, minimal, especially for such a large, comfortable SUV. And it (Hydraulic Body Motion Control) keeps head toss down, as proven by short back-to-back drives of the new QX against an Escalade.” Motor Trend, March 2010“…there’s a lot of luxury going on in the cabin.”Motor Trend, March 2010

“Thanks to the major horsepower and body-on-frame construction, the QX can tow an impressive 8500 pounds in either rear- or four-wheel drive conguration.” Edmunds' Inside Line, March 2010“And power they will have thanks to a direct-injection 5.6-liter V8 that delivers 400 horsepower.”Edmunds' inside Line, March 2010“The cabin is stued to the roof with Inniti's latest electronics.” CarandDriver.com, May 2010“Renement is the keyword for the interior…”CarandDriver.com, May 2010“The QX is a deal compared with the Escalade, GL550, and Lexus GX460, and you’re getting more truck for your money than before.” PopularMechanics.com, May 2010“…it proved surprisingly nimble for rapid motoring on roads that would entertain a sports car or motorcycle pilot.”PopularMechanics.com, May 2010“Buyers looking for bragging rights in this segment might want to talk up the hydraulic body-motion-control system from the touring package, which replaces the antiroll bars with a hydraulic system connecting the shock absorbers side to side.”

The Total Ownership Experience®While the advantages of owning an Inniti can be felt most intimately while sitting in the driver’s seat of one of our vehicles, it is our goal to ensure that every aspect of ownership is a rewarding experi-ence. The Inniti Total Owner- ship Experience is an unprecedented commitment to professionalism and customer service that is tailored to you and your individual needs. You can recognize it the moment you enter an Inniti dealership and in the service you’ll receive for years to come. And in special benets like a complimentary Inniti Service Loan Car1 when you bring your Inniti for scheduled service, Trip Interruption Benets should something go wrong, and Roadside Assistance2 that is ready to help 24 hours a day. It’s all part of our philosophy that quality service is an indispensable feature of a quality vehicle.

This months’ feature artist is beyond one of a kind! Terez is a unique entertainer, singer-songwriter, and recording artist. She was born in Southern California, and grew up in Brooklyn & Staten Island NY. She has been in Florida for 20 years now the last seven in Safety Harbor. She is a real triple threat, as her background is in acting, singing, and dancing as a Musical Theater Major at USF. She changed her major to psychology, and then into marketing, which has given her the foundation for everything she does today…

I was fortunate to catch her performance recently during The 54th Annual Englewood Pioneer Days Festival on Labor Day… She wowed the crowd with her high-energy performance and riveting vocals! I caught up with her a couple days later and thanked her for coming down and playing in The Olde Englewood Village… “Well the pleasure was all mine… Tell your readers that they have a real gem right in your backyard in Englewood. I just did a little hike through Lemon Bay Park. It’s a beautiful spot… Wildlife signs galore! This is the first time I actually had a real live Bald Eagle fly right over my head, unreal… You’ve got this little oasis right there in Englewood...”

Terez plays at local festivals, and venues throughout Central and SW Florida. She has been featured at many major events and venues including Superbowl XXXV, Walt Disney World, “Women Taking Care of the World” International Conference & Concert, Universal Studios and many more. She has just received the Moxy Woman “Visionary Women” award, and with over 15 years of experience doing everything from Vegas-style revues to the front woman for non-stop dance bands, Terez always delivers a high

energy show with original songs that sends a positive message and lifts the crowd up. Known for her over-the top energy and

incredible ability to both write and perform multiple styles of what she calls “feel-good” pop, rock, R & B and BEYOND…

As I found out, there’s more to Terez than just music, although music is the central focal point that brings it all together. “I’ve always played music and I love to write, anything; books, editorial, songs, I’ve always been a wordsmith”, she told me… “I write songs that are empowering and inspiring… My vision is to continue to do what I love. Enjoy nature and the beauty on this planet. Do all words, music, speaking, book, playing, dancing,

traveling, and hiking… Do all that and go BEYOND, and that to me is what makes life as good as it possibly can get!”

It all started when I was asked to be a guinea pig for a consciousness exercise… It you had infinite time and money, and the infinite free

mind of a child… THIS is your life, what would you do with your time and life… Now write it down, ready, set, go. I did this for seven days and what I discovered was that, speaking, empowering, writing kept coming up… Now at this time I was very intertwined in the music world so it all came together…”

Another inspiration was when Terez was introduced to a friend of a friend Debbie Cohen. “She was teacher and told me a story about a challenge

she had given to one of her students who is also a writer and performer to write a song about Master Mind. That’s a term that’s

been around longer than The Secret Law of Attraction, but the same kind of ideas. Some part of me heard this and said oh I’m taking that challenge! It was at that moment that I wrote a song called ‘I Am The Creator Of My

Life’… From that time forward, the material wouldn’t stop! “

Inspired, Terez put together a CD to bring to a Master Mind meeting. “It was positive words and a positive message nothing religious nothing spooky just what I call feel good music.

Terez also engages in motivational speaking engagements and has been the keynote speaker for several conventions and seminars “ I try to keep what I say in a language that anyone can understand, to keep things open so no-matter what your religious beliefs or where you are in your

journey or personal growth I use terms and ideas that you can get, anyone can get. My message can go anywhere form a church, to a corporate environment.

Terez mixes music and motivation, which keeps her audience engaged and makes the process of learning fun. “Learning something new and empowering yourself doesn’t have to be so serous, heavy or hard.

She also plays with a full band called Synchronicity “I’ve been working with them for seven years now, and I do a jazz duo

called ‘Take 3’ with world renowned Jazz player Jerry Kenny who has worked with the tops in the business. It’s a whole different side of me…

Well Terez, if there are any more sides of you, I won’t be able to figure out where you start, or end… I guess that’s why you are Terez & Beyond! Find out more about Terez on her website at: www.RockMySpirit.com

Jimmy Buffett News

Buffett visits University of Southern Mississippi”From The StudentPrintz.com: “Jimmy Buffett visits campus”Jimmy Buffett visited USM Thurs-day to discuss “a couple of projects” with President Martha Saunders and USM scientists. After he and Saunders had lunch in the Trent Lott Center, Saunders gave Buffett a tour of campus, and the two talked with students outside the Administration Building

“I wanted to come back and see my old campus,” Buffett said. “It’s been a while. Some things have definitely changed, and some things haven’t.”Buffett said he came through Hattiesburg on business, but he will be having some fun as well. “I’m on my way down to see the Saints game,” he said.Buffett told the students he graduated from USM on the same day as President Saunders. “I have the program to prove it,” Saunders joked.Buffett asked this reporter how things are going at The Student Printz, and he talked with students who had seen him perform over the summer. Before going into the Administra-tion Building, Buffett said, “I’ve never seen the President’s office… but I’ve seen the dean’s office a few times.”Buffett said he “paid the mini mart back,” in reference to his song “Peanut Butter Conspiracy,” in

which talks about his friends stealing food from the mini mart.“Runnin’ up and down the aisle of the mini mart/ Stickin’ food in our

jeans/ Never took more than we could eat/ There was plenty left on the rack/ We all swore if we ever got rich/ We would pay the mini mart back.”As Saunders and Buffett left the students, Buffett told them, “Y’all get back to class.”

We kicked off the new fiscal year of the Chamber by throwing our annual awards’ dinner in September. It truly is the party of the year and almost anything can happen, and inevitably it does. This year we had fifteen businesses up for Business of the Year and six of them walked away with an award, although all fifteen were true winners. Octagon Wildlife Sanctuary won the Members’ Choice Award (the only award voted on directly by the entire membership), Turning Heads Salon received a “Special Recognition” Award for all their community outreach during the course of the year and Table 209 restaurant won “Newcomer of the Year”, The Visual Arts Center won Not-for-Profit Business of the Year, Creative Window Treatments won Small Business of the Year and Jack’s Restaurant won Large Business of the Year. The banquet room of the Isles Yacht Club was packed and full of hilarity and camaraderie. One of the main highlights of the night was when the awards’ envelope was dropped from the ceiling on a “magical” wire that had remained obscured for the entire night. Maybe it was the drink, but the audience was very impressed! Also honored that night was Nancy Padgett for her services to the Board, Jerry Presseller for his lifetime service to Punta Gorda, Ron Olsen for his endless hours of service to the Chamber as outgoing Chair and Dorothy Strunk aka “Queen Dot”, who took the reigns of the Chamber Board that night. We can’t wait till the next one! Starting on Oct 2nd, we welcome Punta Gorda’s first “Entrepreneurial Academy” - a brand new program, co-sponsored by the City of Punta Gorda and Punta Gorda Chamber of Commerce. It is a series of classes that will allow anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit and an idea for a new business venture to learn how to turn that dream into a reality and hopefully ensure that they succeed. There is room for up to twenty participants so if you have a thought for a business and want to hear how to become your own boss and run your own business, this is the program for you. An intense none class course will cost you a mere $150.00 although you will be getting a value of training well in excess of $3000.00! For more information, simply call us on 941-639-3720 and we’ll be happy to forward you contact details to the course facilitators. It’s as easy as that.

Friday October 1st will be Punta Gorda’s 3rd Annual Downtown Oktoberfest. The fun starts on Taylor in front of the Old Historic Courthouse at 5.00pm. There’ll be German music, foods and plenty of German beer and wine. Entry is free and there’ll be prizes and much, much more.

GNO (Girls Night Out) and Budweiser (Peace River Distributing) will once again be partnering with nine Punta Gorda locations in presenting the 3rd Annual “Bar Stool Open” benefiting services provided by Dollars for Mammograms. Last year’s event raised over $14,000 and enabled approximately 300 woman. It’s anticipated that another 100 teams will be registered prior to “tee off time” on 10/2! This annual

event has enabled Dollars for Mammograms the ability to expand the services that they provide into 18 Charlotte County zip codes! Participating locations this year include: Ice House Pub, River City Grill, Biehl’s Slip-Not Lounge, Phil’s 41, Beef O’Brady’s, Tapas One, Dean’s South of the Border, Jacks and the The Celtic Ray. This event is a nine hole miniature golf tournament that offers anyone the opportunity to play. Just get a team of four (4) putters together, men and/or women, and sign up at one of the participating locations. The cost is $100 per team and we are limited to the first 100 teams that register. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 10:30am and end with a wrap up party at 6:00pm at Biehl’s Slip-Not Lounge. Prizes will be awarded for a variety of accomplishments including best team name, best costume, high and low scores and best putter, so use that imagination! Dollars for Mammograms is a nonprofit 501 (C)(3) public foundation established solely for the purpose of providing no cost mammograms to area women who are uninsured or underinsured and cannot afford the cost of a mammogram. For more information about this foundation, go to www.dollarsformammograms.org. For more information about this fun filled event,

please contact either Denise Dull at 941-626-9439 or Kris Peterson at 941-815-1888.

October 23rd, we invite you to our fall Citywide garage sale in the parking lot of Centennial Bank/Koch Zeman & Walsh CPAs located on the corner of Taylor and Virginia in downtown Punta Gorda. The sale starts at 8am till noon. To participate in the sale, call 941 639 3720 and get an application form. The cost is a mere $15.00 per vehicle and the rest is up to us. These sales always attract a great crowd.

We are also planning for the Holiday Season already. On Saturday December 4th, we present our 21st annual Lighted Boat Parade across Charlotte Harbor. The route map is already posted to our Light Boat Parade page on our website www.puntagordachamber.com There, you will also find our registration form if you are a boater and want to join in the fun. There is no entry fee. Just must however make one mandatory safety meeting and then, following the parade, on Monday December 6th, we throw YOU a party for being part of the parade!

We are conducting a European-style Christmas market this year, starting on Thursday December 2nd and running through to December 4th. That weekend is always a big weekend in town, with tree lighting, parades and this year, for the first time, the Jingle Bell Run to aid arthritis sufferers. The market will operate on the corner of Marion and Taylor from 4PM-10PM on Thursday and Friday night and all day Saturday. If you are a craft vendor or have a product that you would like to consider for the market, simply give us a call on 941 639 3720 and we’ll get you the details. Each vendor will be provided with a 10x10 tent, a table and chairs. All you need is the product, the time and a little cash!

For a full listing of events as well as to search for our approved Chamber members’ details, please visit www.puntagordachamber.com The events and calendar link is a great page, but also visit the Friday Facts link – this is a weekly e-news publication which you can sign up for FREE, so that the latest and most up-to-date information on everything that is going on in both the City and the Chamber can be emailed to you every week. You’ll never be out of the loop again!

Gramma Still Drives Priceless Grandma is eighty-eight years old and still drives her own car. She writes: Dear Grand-daughter,

The other day I went up to our lo-cal Christian book store and saw a ‘Honk if you love Jesus’ bumper sticker ..

I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting..

So, I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper.

Boy, am I glad I did; what an up-lifting experience that followed.

I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good he is, and I didn’t notice that the light had changed.

It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn’t honked, I’d never have noticed.

I found that lots of people love Jesus!

While I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his win-dow and screamed, ‘For the love of God!’

‘Go! Go! Go! Jesus Christ, GO!’

What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!

Everyone started honking!

I just leaned out my window and started waving and smiling at all those loving people. I even honked my horn a few

times to share in the love!

There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a sunny beach..

I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air.

I asked my young teenage grand-son in the back seat what that meant.

He said it was probably a Hawai-ian good luck sign or something.

Well, I have never met anyone from Hawaii , so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign right back.

My grandson burst out laughing.

Why even he was enjoying this religious experience!!

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the mo-ment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me.

I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed.

So, grinning, I waved at all my brothers and sisters, and drove on through the intersection.

I noticed that I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared.

So I slowed the car down, leaned out the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away. Praise the Lord for such wonderful folks!! Will write again soon,

Love, Grandma

5 day Caribbean Cruise, so much to do, so little time…..We have some fun events coming up in October. First up is our annual Peace River Canoe Trip on Saturday, October 2nd. The Happy Hour will be held at the Gulf Drive Café’s new Tike bar on the beach on Anna Maria Island on October 8th. The Annual Golf outing to benefit the Alzheimer’s association will be held on October 9th. After the golf outing there will be a BBQ and party

at Twin Lakes for all participants, their guests and all club members. We will be in full force on October 23rd for the Alzheimer’s walk with

a BBQ at South Lido beach following the walk.

If you are looking for a fun club to join don’t be shy, you can join at our monthly meeting held at the Saranama Eagles Club at 501 North Beneva Rd, or on our newly revamped website @ www.SBPHC.com -check us out! The meetings are held the last Thursday of every month from 6:00 to 9:00pm. September was our special live music night with Jim Morris playing in the courtyard. Till next time, remember – “We’re growing older, but not up!”

Good bye September, bring on October. As always we were very busy little SBPHC Parrot Heads this past month.

At our monthly meeting we presented checks totaling $9,000.00 to our environmental projects of Mote Marine, Save our Seabirds and The Reef Ball Project. This was money we made at our Birthday Bash in June while partying with a purpose. We cleaned the islands and had another great raft up/beach party on South Lido beach. This month we made a video to submit for the “Gypsies in the Palace” competition for the MOTOM. Did anyone say - tail gate? Yes, we did that too-it was before a Ray’s game, which about 40 members attended. Oh, by the way it was a good night for the Rays, beating Boston 3-2! Go Rays!!! This month we had our Happy Hour at the Honoluana Bar & Grill. To top it all off, we went “Croozin & Boozin” on a

We all know Halloween is celebrated at the end of October, but what other interesting facts do you know about the Fall Month that begins to usher in the change of seasons? Hey Tampa Bay Parrotheads, what tiiiiiiiime is it? It’s time to move back home. Yep, that’s right. Whiskey Joe’s on the causeway is where we started, and now our new home will be at the new Whiskey Joe’s. We’ve had a few events there over the last year and a half and it seems to have worked out well enough to make it our forever home. The first official meeting there will be Wednesday, October 6th and I hope everyone can make it out. We do have to give a big shout out to Derek at Gasoline Alley for hosting us for almost two years. It’s been a lovely cruise.

Our 16th birthday party has come and gone, and yours truly had to miss it for the first time in 12 years!! Boy, did I miss a good time! It started off Friday night with the De’Leid Parrots at Jimmy Guana’s and carried on Saturday at the pool party with Flip Flop Dave and some apparently wild and crazy antics around the pool. I still haven’t found out what was up with the inflated gloves…and I’m not sure I want to know since most of them seemed to have ended up in Steve Bird’s bathing suit!!

Saturday night started out with a moment of silence for 9/11, then A1A, with the fab Jeff Pike, entertained

PH club and Teresa is the secretary. Our lovely Miss Susan Martin won Parrothead of the Year, and there is no one more deserving. That woman works, and shops, her butt off for this club, and much of it on her own dime. She has run the raffles for several years now, and is in her second stint as Election Officer, which is a

seriously thankless job. But Thank You!! And congrats.

Mikeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee said that drunken calls to Cap’n Harry and Sarah Sunshine didn’t make it through, but little miss McGill did

manage to get most everyone smeared with icing, as is her “tradition”. I am sure there was some champagne involved as well. Sunday brought out some hung over folks to listen to the wonderful Michael Weiss. Oh yeah, and we raised over $2500 for Clearwater Marine Aquarium in the process. Thanks to all the volunteers for making another great party happen. Still can’t believe I had to miss it!!!

OK, so I am running out of room. If you didn’t sign up for Meeting of the Minds it’s too late by the time you read this (sorry about your luck). You can read all about it in the December issue. In the meantime you need to join us at our next Parrothead meeting. You can find us at Whiskey Joe’s (on the Tampa causeway next to the public parking for Ben T. Davis beach) on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month. Check out our website at www.finsup.com for more details about the club or any of our upcoming events (click on the “Events” banner and go to the month in which you need info). And remember, “Wrinkles only go where the smiles have been.”

It’s here…I can’t believe it’s finally here! No, I’m not talking about a winning streak for the Rays, I’m talking about Fall! Fall is officially here, which means there are some exciting, and yes scary, events, festivals and celebrations for everyone to participate in. While they aren’t all scary, the ones that are will have you wanting to jump out of your skin! So, let’s not waste any time and get to the must-sees during October.

I would be remiss if I didn’t start with one of the Tampa Bay area’s signature events during October – Howl-O-Scream at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay. We are told that this year’s event, which has a completely new theme – Revenge Rocks – will be taking sweet revenge on its most devoted fans! The basics: for 18 select nights Busch Gardens Tampa Bay transforms into Florida’s top-rated Halloween event – a park-wide nightmare of seductive surprises that will rock your world. Devious creatures infest Busch Gardens’ 335 acres with dark, sinister, adult-targeted fun, including more haunted houses than ever before, all-new spine-tingling scare zones and thrilling live stage shows.

For those who haven’t been to this chilling event before, and even for those who have, Howl-O-Scream has turned in to one of the premier Halloween events in Central Florida, so don’t miss your chance to survive a night of pure terror! www.HowlOScream.com.

And for those who would like something a little more family-friendly this Halloween, we have you covered too. When the sun goes down, the frights come out at ZooBoo, Tampa’s largest family Halloween event, taking place at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo! The basics: it’s a ghoulish good time for all during the multi-night celebration. Meander through the shadowy darkness of haunted houses like the new “Pharaoh’s Tomb of Revenge” or find spooky fun for little ones with their own “Boo House” and dazzling

seasonal lights. Enjoy free unlimited Zoo rides like the twisting, turning Tasmanian Tiger family coaster. www.LowryParkZoo.com.

Another family-friend option to consider is the largest science center in the Southeast United States – Hall-o-Boo at MOSI. The basics: Hall-o-Boo goes

Hollywood, with fun and fright zones inspired by Hollywood classics. This fifth annual event includes children’s activities, trick or treat stations and science demonstrations. But it’s only for three days – Oct. 28-30! www.MOSI.org.

For those of you who prefer the real thing, here’s something I suggest you get out and investigate – Ghost Tour of Tampa! There’s no theme park, no thrilling coasters, no live performances, just the real thing, and it’s waiting for you. You can experience this candlelit walking tour and “discover the other side of Tampa’s quirky past... a place of restless spirits, haunted theaters, and lost cemeteries.” So if you’re looking for the real deal this Halloween, check it out. they have nightly tours at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.. Visit www.ghosttour.com to get the details.

I almost forgot – there’s Guavaween! I have mentioned this before, but you have to know that Guavaween is a Latin-style Halloween celebration based on Tampa’s nickname, “The Big Guava.” This annual celebration features the mythical Mama Guava, who has sworn to take the “bore” out of Ybor City, and

a parade of her devoted followers. The festival is an all day event beginning with Family Fun Fest offering activities for the entire family. The “Mama Guava Stumble,” a satirical night parade, kicks off the evening’s activities and a huge street party featuring multiple stages of entertainment continues well past midnight. No matter what you do though, make sure you come decked out in your best costume!

It all happens Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 and the annual event is a major fundraiser for the Ybor City Chamber of Commerce (so there is an admission price), so be sure to visit all of the fine shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, galleries and theatres that make Ybor City great!

There are the ins and not-so-outs of how to survive Halloween in Tampa Bay! Get out there, get scared, and have a great time!

Baker! The evil man who played Cousin Larry on the hit 1980’s sitcom Perfect Strangers!

Aries (March 21 - April 20) You will soon come into a good deal of money. Spend it wisely. Or not. Doesn’t matter. Because you’re about to be skinned alive by flesh-eating zombies.

Taurus (April 21 - May 21) You will get an unexpected visit from a recently deceased friend. Libra plays a role.

Gemini (May 22 - June 21) You will have good luck in romance. In fact, you will get a love bite on your neck that will drain your soul and turn you into a vampire... or CEO of a credit card company. Same difference.

Cancer (June 22 - July 22) Today is your day to shine. Mostly because you’ll be lit on fire.

Leo (July 23 -August 21) Be ready to embrace change. Loose change. Because soon you will be homeless and begging for coins. But the good news is people will feel sympathy for you being that you have no legs and half a face.

Virgo (August 22 - September 23) Your astrological planets have aligned in your favor! Unfortunately, it’s your spine that needs alignment as it will become horribly twisted after you fall down a flight of stairs fighting off a swarm of bees that were stinging you in the genitalia. Sagittarius plays a large roll.

Libra (September 24 - October 23)Guys: You will have no more worries about losing your hair. Especially when it’s a full moon. Owwwww! Ladies: Shaving your legs is gonna be a bitch.

Scorpio (October 24 - November 22) Today you will enjoy a nice long nap. In dirt. Forever.

Sagittarius (November 23 - December 22) Its time to bring out your inner witch or warlock, the moon is right and its time for some hocus-pocus! New song for your I-pod “I put a spell on you and now your mine” Capricorn (December 23 - January 20) Trick or treat? You’re actually both. By this time tomorrow you’ll be working the streets wearing 4 inch heels and spandex pants, going by your new name, Candi. And you girls are in for some bad luck, too!

Aquarius (January 21 - February 19) join the celebration: even the dullest-seeming people will suddenly reveal an interest in you and your latest odd project. Keep an eye out for the prince in the frog costume, who may become your next lover or a new pet.

Pisces (February 20- March 20) You will meet the person of your dreams. Your bad dreams. That person will chase you as your run naked through your high school. Then your teeth will fall out of your head. You turn around to see who is chasing you... it’s Mark Linn-
