This will be our first time there since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast in September of 2005. After that terrible storm, Earlene's mother, Mildred, traveled to a Georgia conference center to volunteer in helping with about two hundred Katrina evacuees. She cleaned tables, comforted folks who'd lost just about everything, and helped to staff the telephones. She told us later that the biggest thrill of all during those terrible days happened when she, or one of the other telephone volunteers, got to deliver some good news about a loved one who'd been located. ..a new job that had been landed. . . or something else that gave a shred of hope to refugees from the storm. I would never trivialize the suffering endured in the wake of that storm, but I hope you'll remember: the biggest thrill . . . the most special time . . . when you get to share some good news. The Gospel is good news . . . Faith Fellowship is good news . . . Bring a Friend to worship with us this month.

Faith from the Front Porch

by Jackie Bondurant Only be careful, and watch yourselves closely so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen or let them slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and to their children after them.

Deuteronomy 4:9

Time spent on the front porch is often time of reflection. Today I am reminded of time spent with my friend Sarah in Arizona. During my visit, we went to the Heard Museum of American Indian Art and History. There I observed a Navajo woman speaking to a group of middle school children. As a child, she was selected by her Grandmother to stay at home – not go to school – so that she could learn the legends and traditions of her ancestors. She did not learn to speak or read English until she was a grown woman. Even though she longed to go to school and share the same experiences as her siblings, she realized that she had been given a great gift – one that she would share with others throughout her life. Maybe that is God’s plans for grandmothers.
