Grants Awarded in July 2014

Special scanner for Ocular Oncology The Friends were asked to fund an Anterior Segment OCT Scanner at a cost of £43,200. The scanner would allow the Ocular Oncology team (and other clinics such as Glaucoma) to perform scans in Clinic 11 on the lower ground floor instead of sending patients upstairs. At the moment this can extend patient visits by two or three hours – on top of other tests being carried out. The OCT scanner was discussed by the trustees at their meeting in July and one of the consultants at the meeting suggested that there might be another more versatile scanner which would suit more clinics. The applicant agreed that there were two, but it would add £20,000 - taking the cost over Friends’ normal grant limit of £50,000. Following these discussions, the Ultrasound Department has arranged for a trial of two scanners during August and the Friends trustees will consider whether to agree to increase the funding at their meeting in September.

Counsellor for children and young people This pilot project will provide specific psychological help for young patients, thereby preventing further distress to those who have received bad news about their eyes. Counsellors who work with under 18s need special qualifications. The Committee considered this scheme as highly suitable for funding by the Friends. The appointment would be for 2 years subject to reports after 1 year. Cost £21,376 a year.

Part time play leader for one day a week The play leader’s role is to distract children from unpleasant medical procedures and entertain waiting children with toys, games and family friendly activities (it keeps parents happy too!). The one day per week will provide cover in the A&E department where there is currently cover on only four days. Cost £6,130.00 a year

Extracts from a letter from:

Gordon Hay, Fellow in Oncology Service Marie Restori , Consultant Physicist , Department of Ultrasound Mandeep Sagoo, Consultant Ophthalmologist ,MR & Oncology Service

We are delighted to have the opportunity to thank the Friends of Moorfields for funding the Sonosite M Turbo Ultrasound Scanner at a cost of £28,210.25 in July 2013. The scanner purchased by the Friends is based in Clinic 11 on the Lower Ground Floor.

The Sonosite M-Turbo is a robust, easy to use and state of the art scanner. For its compact size it produces scans almost comparable to top of the range machines. It takes only a few minutes training for the operator to obtain full functionality. The machine is in absolute pleasure to use. The scans are easily reproducible between patient visits.

It has been invaluable in improving the patient journey through clinics. Prior to its purchase all patients in the Thursday morning Medical Retina and Oncology Services were sent to the first floor for an Ultrasound Scan. This would often be upwards of 50 patients and the patient journey was lengthened by several hours as a result of this due to the inevitable long queues in the Department of Ultrasound. Having a new scanner within Clinic 11 now means that returning patients often have a scan within minutes of checking in. As the test itself takes only a few minutes to perform, this has therefore, had a dramatic impact on amount of time the patients wait in the clinic. Since its arrival, in August 2013, it has benefit-ted almost 100 patients per week in the Medical Retina and Oncology Services.

We are extremely grateful for the purchase of this system with funds from the Friends of Moorfields

Basil Bramble - brings a smile to some of our patients

Basil delivered a huge bag of knitting from his friend Iris and her pals Pat, Jackie, Zena, Movia and Barbara from the “Knit and Natter Group” in the South Chingford Community Library. The knitting is absolutely beautiful and is on sale in the Friends Shop. You can see Basil handing over the knitting to Liz Fisher.

We send huge thanks to Basil and his friends for all their help. Basil - we’re always glad to see you.

One of our regular helpers Basil Bramble came into the hospital on 24 June. He spent time visiting the clinics chatting to patients (he is very friendly!) and selling some raffle tickets.

THE SECOND MOORFIELDS’S GOT TALENT Wednesday 9 July at Kings Place

The overall winner - as voted by the audience - was Simon Pearce who had everyone enthralled with his rendition of Mustang Sally

A choir of HR staff members sang a selection of war songs accompanied by Simon Kealy on the piano and conducted by Jo Kelsey. They dedicated their act to the doctors and nurses from Moorfields who fell in action in World War II and those who died when a V1 bomb hit the hospital in 1944.

9

The judges this year comprised Director of Nursing & Allied Health Professions, Tracy Luckett, Director of Strategy and Business Development, Rob Elek, and Stacey Strong, a doctor at Moorfields (who very kindly stepped in at the last minute). They all had great fun - as you can see!

Ginny Salter, Chairman of The Friends of Moorfields, congratulated everyone on their superb performances which contributed to a great evening.

A report from Andrew Crerar:

The Moorfields Way (In your shoes) – refreshing our values)

In the May edition of The Friends of Moorfields newsletter, we introduced The Moorfields Way – a Trust campaign designed to improve the care we provide to our patients so we can be at our best more consistently in the future.

Our ambition for Moorfields is to provide safe, compassionate and high-quality care to all our patients. We are equally focused on ensuring that our trust is a great place to work for our staff. But we know that, for one reason or another, we don’t always live up to the high standards to which we aspire.

To address these inconsistencies The Moorfields Way was launched in June to help us understand, from our patients and staff, what is great about our trust and where we have room to improve.

By listening to our patients and staff talk honestly about Moorfields, we will capture and articulate a set of values and

shared expectations. The values we create will be an agreement between our patients and staff about how we will behave so we can continue to foster a great working environment for our staff and deliver excellent care for our patients

Over the past two months, we have been capturing our patients’ feedback through a series of listening events, called “In Your Shoes”, and an online survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Moorfieldsvalues-patient (which is still open should you wish to contribute). The series of “In Your Shoes” events held during June and July brought staff and patients together to talk about the things that impact on patient experience the most and how we can continue to improve the care we provide right across the trust. The events were extremely successful with over 140 people volunteering their time to help us understand how we need to improve our services and care.

While patients are the centre of everything we do, The Moorfields Way is also about listening to our staff. Through this campaign we have already asked over 600 staff members to tell us what will improve their experience at work, because we know that more motivated and satisfied staff will provide better care for our patients.

Over the next two months, The Moorfields Way will continue to engage patients and staff so that together we can create a set of guiding principles that describe how we will work every day and ensure that our approach is consistent across every site, clinic and department.

For more information on how The Moorfields Way is improving our trust for everyone, please contact Andrew Crerar or Jackie Tumelty in the learning and development team via email to [email protected] or call 020 7566 2905. To follow our progress, please visit: www.Moorfields.nhs.uk/TheMoorfieldsWay or pick up the November copy of The Friends’ Peacock newsletter.

Mrs Margaret ffytche

Do you know the whereabouts of Joyce Mavis Thompson or Alvin Thompson? Previously known as Mavis Joyce Fowlin and Reg G Thompson who came from Kingston, Jamaica to London by boat in the early 1950s? If you have any information please telephone SAM (Sally-Anne Maidment) on 07949 074989 in confidence or email:

[email protected]

The Friends were asked by Tim ffytche to find a part-time assistant for half a day a week for the Moorfields Association (newly formed from an amalgamation of the Moorfields Surgeons Association and the Moorfields Alumni Association) which prompted memories of Tim’s mother, Mrs Margaret ffytche.

Encouraged by Tim, Margaret became a volunteer of The Friends of Moorfields as a comparatively young woman, firstly at the High Holborn branch and then following the amalgamation of the Hospital at City Road, spending two regular days a week in the shop where she worked tirelessly to ensure its success.

Margaret was an expert knitter and also found time to provide the shop with an endless supply of beautifully made dolls that sold as soon as a new batch arrived. She was also called upon by the Hospital as a translator of Spanish whenever needed.

Margaret died on 20 July 1996 aged 86 years. She will be remembered by many as a neat and small person, always immaculately turned out. Her charm penetrated to patients and Hospital staff alike who were aware of her unquestionable friendliness and commitment.
