THE STORY OF DIWALIThursday 23rd October

A long time ago in India a prince called Ramafell in love with a beautiful girl called Sita andmarried her. The king, who was Rama’sfather, was very pleased and wanted to give hiskingdom to Rama. But the king had three wivesand one of his other wives wanted her ownson to get the kingdom. So she asked the kingto send Rama and Sita away for 14 years. Thiswas enough time for her own son to grow upand get the kingdom. The king was very sad, buthe had once promised this wife that he wouldgive her whatever she wanted, so he kept hispromiseandsentRamaandSitaaway. They left thekingdom, together with Rama’s loyal youngerbrotherLakshman, andwent to live ina large forest.

One day while they were living in the forest ademon woman saw Rama and wanted him forherself. But Rama and Lakshman cut off hernose and sent her away. She went and told herbrother Ravana, a demon king who had ten heads. He was angry and sent a golden deer into theforest and while Rama and Lakshman werechasing it the demon king kidnapped Sita andtook her to his castle on an island far away.Rama was heartbroken, but he andLakshman went to look for Sita.

After searching for a long time Rama andLakshman came across an army of monkeysand bears, whose leader was the monkey godHanuman. Rama asked Hanuman for help, andHanuman agreed. Being a god he was ableto leap over oceans to look for Sita. He leapedacross to the island where she was being keptprisoner and found her. Then he went back to tellRama, and Rama, Lakshman, Hanuman and allthe army of monkeys and bears set out to fightthe demon king Ravana and bring back Sita.

There was a very great battle, but in the end Ramaand his army killed all the demons except forRavana himself. With his ten heads he was toopowerful and could not be killed by Rama’sarrows. But someone whispered to Rama that thedemon king had a weak spot, his navel, so Ramashot him there and killed him. Joyfully Ramarescued Sita and they returned to their home in theforest where they lived out the rest of the 14 years.

At last the time came for Rama and Sita to goback to their homeland. They set out to makethe journey and as they got close to the kingdomthey found all the people were waiting for themto come home. It was dark as they got near, andan old woman put a lamp in her window to lightthe path for Rama and Sita. Soon all the peoplein the kingdom were putting out lamps to lightthem on their way. Everywhere was glowing withlights, and Rama and Sita followed the lightsuntil they finally reached home. All the people ofthe kingdom were happy and there was a greatcelebration that has lasted down to this day.

This is why at Diwali people light lamps in theirhomes, set off fireworks and offer food to eachother to remember the time that Rama and Sitacame home after the victory of good over evil.

Congratulations to Scott Emery, who on Saturday6th September competed in the final of theannual Staffordshire Poet Laureate competition.

Scott had successfully beatenhundreds of applicants to get to thefinals at The Shire Hall in Staffordtown centre.

The board of Staffordshire County Councilthrough the Libraries and Arts had chosen Scott’sthree poems, that he had entered into thecompetition last summer.

“The English Department are immensely proudof Scott Emery’s fantastic achievement and aredelighted that he had the confidence andambition to bid for the position of Staffordshire’sYoung Poet Laureate. Regardless of whether hewon or not, his effort and determination got himall the way to the final, which is anincredible achievement in itself: we congratulatehim on his efforts and incredible success so far.Scott made it all the way to the final and he hasmade Wolgarston very proud indeed. All youngpeople should take inspiration from Scott –without hope, ambition and motivation, there canbe no such thing as success. Scott successfullyrepresented himself and our school in achallenging poetry competition and we hope hecontinues to reach for the stars!” said Miss Evans(Second in English).

“Although I did not win the competition, all in allthe experience of being short listed for the YoungStaffordshire Poet Laureate has significantlyimproved my skills as a poet and mostimportantly of all has increased my confidencein my own ability. IT isn’t such a common affairto have had the privilege to read ones poems infront of a knowledgeable and appreciative

audience. So therefore I am grateful for the staffwho aided me in my entry. I would encourageall to not only write poetry but enter in whatevercompetitions possible. Who knows how far youcould get and how far it can take you in yourfuture,” said Scott Emery (Year 11 student).

The Military Wives Choir Stafford is a groupof ladies based in MOD Stafford who all enjoysinging. Military Wives Choir Stafford was setup in October 2013 by RAF wife, Sheryl Godwinwith a view to giving the Stafford ladies the samepositive and inspiring experience she previouslyhad at RAF Benson. The choir has developedand grown since then and gives wives and otherforces related members an opportunity to meetnew people, to do something for themselves. We meet every Wednesday with our MusicalDirector, Simon Allen, giving us a chance tohave fun, rehearse together and provide mutualsupport as we deal with the challenges ofService life.

Sheryl had arranged our debut performance atMOD Stafford Christmas Carol Service 2013giving us only weeks to get ready to perform. Weworked hard as a team and not only performedonce before the end of December 2013, butnumerous times at both free and paid events.

There are now over a two dozen regularmembers on the books. We all lookforward to our weekly rehearsals (our ‘me time!’),giving us chance to catch up for a chat and then torehearse ready for our next event. We havefound that we have a special bond and we have

met people we would not have come acrosswithout the choir. It’s a fantastic network of ladies. As one of over 80 Military Wives Choirsthat have now been established across theUK and abroad, the Stafford Military WivesChoir is part of the Military Wives ChoirsFoundation. The Military Wives ChoirsFoundation is a network ofchoirs that reaches across thewhole military community, to bring women closertogether through singing. The Foundation is aregistered subsidiary charity of SSAFA ForcesHelp. It provides guidance, funding and supportfor individual choirs, as well as the opportunity tobring choirs together through national projects.Through its growing network ofchoirs, the Foundation is buildingsomething that brightens lives, changesperceptionsandstrengthensmilitarycommunities.

Are you looking forward to Autumn?

Well, Autumn is loved by some, with thebeautiful colours and smells, rustling leaves andnice warmer clothes, a real chance to eat homemade soup – it is also hated by some, for all thatit stands for, the end of Summer and the onset of‘the cold’ and Autumn rain.

You can get lots of help to keep well at Winter, not least of all will be the opportunity, for manypeople to access a Flu injection to help ward offinfection. Many of the supermarkets, chemists and your local surgery can offer all sortsof checks, treatments and advice to keep you(and your family) well. Sometimes there is a smallcharge, sometimes it’s free. Check your localchemist as well as your surgery as there is massesof leaflets and further information.
