Lighting has been, not just a business, but also away of life for the Hayes family for over forty years.

Initially started by Arthur and Shirley, sons Markand Gary joined the family ‘production line’ afterschool hours in their Sutton Coldfield kitchen, assoon as all homework was done.

Later progressing into all aspects of lightmanufacturing and distribution, the family teamhas grown from strength to strength. The lightingindustry really is a true family concern and one thathas been made successful by total commitment, dedication and sheer hard work.

Gary is director of the Lighting Bug, Cannock. Hisbrother Mark, having recently relocated fromRotherham, has successfully launched and isa director of Refined Lighting in Milton Keynes.Sister Brenda has been director of the LightingBug (Swindon) for the past ten years.

Closer to home, the Lighting Bug ltd has beentrading in Cannock for over twenty years originallysituated in Walkmill Business Park.

In 1995, the Lighting Bug relocated to the premiseson Walsall Road, Bridgtown where it proudlysits and has been successfully trading for overtwenty years.

Dedicated staff and sound product knowledgeis paramount of importance to the Lighting Bug.Director Gary says,

“Our store is not a multi-national store wherecustomers just walk in, choose a box from theshelves and pay for it. People shop and return tous from all areas, some literally miles away (evenNew Zealand!), specifically to receive the level ofservice and knowledge that we are proud to offer.”

“Our staff are all long term employees who take agreat deal of pride in their jobs. They are a close-knit team whose aim is to provide good, sound

advice with a high level of customer service.”“Customers who use us, return to us. They even sendtheir children and friends because we have thelighting background and knowledge that sometimesthey not only want, but need and appreciate.”

“At the Lighting Bug, interaction with the public isvery important. The customers have the satisfactionof seeing the goods they want. They can touchthem, compare colours and hold them, all of whichhelps them to visualise the goods they want in situ. This is our biggest advantage over the internet,we physically exist and do our utmost to help.”

“However, we are not infallible and I have to behonest, there have been some rare occasionswhen even we have been stumped! But – in thoseinstances, we have made it our business toresearch the required product or query, and givethe customer details of where to go and who tocontact to resolve their problem. How’s thatfor dedication? You won’t get that level of servicefrom the internet or a multi national!”

The Lighting Bug also offer a service wherebyusing the customers own fabric, they can tailormake bespoke soft shades to compliment individualdécor and enhance their home.

You can view our showroom via Google mapsusing search postcode ‘WS11 0JH’. Visit your localshowroom at 173 Walsall Road, Bridgtown,Cannock, WS11 0JH. Contact us on 01543577776. Our opening hours are Monday-Sat,9:30am-5:30pm. Free parking available. welcome.

STEP INTO CHRISTMAS AT THEWINTER WALK

Katharine House Hospice’s Winter Walk startsand finishes on the Shugborough Estate onSunday 7th December at 10am and will feature afestive warm up and a visit from Santa.Members of the Fundraising Team at thehospice have already been thrilled with theresponse the event has received.

So far over 250 people have signed up to join thewalk which promises to be a fun day for all thefamily. Registration for the 4.5 mile sponsoredwalk, which is once again being generouslysupported by AF Systems Carpet and PressureCleaning, costs just £10 and includes a freeChristmas dinner in a bap and commemorativebadge at the finish line. Kids go free!

James Lunney, Fundraiser at the hospice says:‘We have been really pleased by the responseand so far we have over 250 supporters signed

up but still have room for plenty more! Betterstill, every penny raised from this sponsoredby the walkers event will go towards supportingour patients and their families.’

James says “we have kept the registration fee atthe same price as previous years, but we reallywant to encourage people to gain sponsorshipfrom family, friends and colleagues to raiseadditional funds for the Hospice. Every yearit costs £2.7m to provide our free care servicesand events like the Winter Walk really helptowards this huge figure”

Over the last three years Lacey has taken partin the ‘Winter Walk’ and has raised an incredible£1,854.50, all in her own time. This year Lacey iswalker number 1 and her father who walks withLacey every year is number 2. It’s remarkablewhat Lacey has done for the hospice since shestarted the event at just 12 years old and weare truly grateful for all Lacey’s efforts.

Katharine House Hospice relies heavily onthe generosity of the community it serves tocontinue to provide its range of care services.Only 25% of the hospices running costs comefrom statutory sources, the rest it must raise itself.

Six volunteers of the Penkridge unit of St JohnAmbulance were recognised for their life savingwork during a ceremony in Stafford last month.

Petula Hughes, who helped found the unit 40years ago, received an award for performingmore than 500 hours of first aid at events in andaround Penkridge, including school fairs, churchfetes, fun runs, the Victorian Christmas market, bonfires, local theatre performances and villagecarnivals. Petula also trains other volunteers in firstaid.

Sheila Carnochan was recognised for beinga volunteer for more than 23 years, and herhundreds of hours of first aid at events.

Jean James, the unit leader, clocked up 34years. Jean has treated hundreds of peopleat events from horse shows to local fetes andalso trained many people in life saving first aid.

Former teacher Lesley Bodkin, who has been avolunteer with the charity for more than 25 years, was awarded a long service certificate andBarrie Hill, who helps run the Cadet unit whichtrained 11 to 17-year-olds in first aid, alsocollected an award for long service. Andrew Hughes received a St John Ambulanceservice medal. Since he joined the charity 13 yearsago, he has helped save the lives of two peoplethrough Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Several volunteers in the unit helped him to

save the life of a standard bearer who collapsedduring the annual Anzac Parade on CannockChase several years ago. He was called intoaction again just over a year later when a mansuffered a heart attack at the Model Airshow at Weston Park – he also survived.

Unit leader Jean James said: ‘For a small villageunit, Penkridge has given thousands andthousands of hours of voluntary first aid overthe last 40 years to the community and thesurrounding area.

‘We are often called on to provide first aid atevents further afield in Staffordshire too. Overthe years we have all treated a diverse range ofcasualties from cuts and bumps to brokenbones, bites, stings, heart problems, andstrokes – you name it and we have treated it!

‘We believe that no-one should die through alack of first aid and we are all delighted to berecognised for playing our part in makinga Penkridge a safer place to be.’

DESSERT COCKTAIL RECIPES FORTHE FESTIVE SEASON

The Christmas festivities are almost upon us andas the cold Winter nights draw in Micksologyrecommends something to help warm you up that’sjust a little decadent too.

It’s great to end a hearty meal with a lusciousdessert and maybe a Brandy or a Baileys but a dessertcocktail is a great way of finishing it by combiningthe two. There are a lot of dessert cocktails out there someof which replicate the flavours of your favouritedessert and many which are creamy and totallyindulgent.

Let’s start off with The Daddy of dessert cocktailsthe Brandy Alexander. This was originally a Gin baseddrink which was adapted in the early 20thcentury to combine Brandy with the chocolateand spice of the Nutmeg to make a creamy classic. If you just can’t resist it then this drink pairswonderfully with chocolate desserts.

• Strain into glass and top with ground Nutmeg

You can substitute the Brandy for Frangelicohazelnut liqueur to make a Ferrero Rocher cocktail.Top with chocolate shavings or crumble FerreroRocher on top.For an alternative to the creamy style of dessertcocktails try this Bourbon based one from TheWoodford Reserve Culinary Cocktail Tour a greatfood and drink book put out by the distillery.

PENKRIDGE CHESS NEWSFrom 10:00am to 12:00pm on Saturday 8thNovember 2014, the inaugural meeting ofPenkridge Chess was held at the Haling DeneCentre in Penkridge. About an hour was spentdiscussing the rules of play and there was anintroduction to ‘judgement and planning’. Thistakes the beginner across the bridge to thosehigher regions where not impulse but reasondetermines the choice of a move without, however, minimising the signifi cance of what we call ‘intuition.’

There was an introductory tournament underfull ‘English Chess Federation’ rules to which the players used the opportunity to learnhow to play with a chess clock.

BUSINESS INSIGHTS HELP WITHUNIVERSITY AND CAREER CHOICES

60 students from schools in the Stone and Staffordarea arrived at the Gatehouse Theatre in Staffordon Wednesday 24th September to find outmore about the benefits of taking part in the YoungEnterprise (YE) programme.

As Sarah White, Chair of the YE Stone and StaffordBoard explained, over a period of 9 months, eachteam will set up their own company, design anddevelop a product or service, sell their product andcomplete a Business Plan and Company Report. They will also make a 4 minute presentation toaround 150 people in March 2015.

“Every year we see the students grow in stature asthey learn how to start up and run a business fromscratch. By the end of the academic year, they willhave gained important employability skills suchas problem solving, communication, resilience andorganisation”

Janis Wilcox, the area representative for YEsaid, “There is significant research to showthat students who take part in the YoungEnterprise Programme can earn up to 40% morethan their contemporaries – simply because ofthe skills they gained during the programme. ”

This new cohort have a great team of people behindthem in Stone and Stafford. Each team is allocateda Business Advisor, usually a local business personwho has volunteered to give some time tomentoring the students. In addition, the Area

Board members (also volunteers) arrange keymilestone events to ensure all the teams are all makingprogress and to give advice at strategic points in thecompetition.

New this year is the ability to trade on-line. The teamswill be able to sell all over the country and indeed, all over the world via their website, phone or mail.Their first steps will be to decide on a companyname, register the company and allocate roles. Then they will come up with some product ideasand research them before embarking onproduction. It’s a tall order, especially as thestudents are also taking up to 4 AS levels atthe same time. But as Sarah White says, “Theorganisational skills they will learn during thisyear will stand them in very good stead whenthey start looking for university places and jobs inthe future.”

We wish all the teams the best of luck for thecoming year.

If any schools in the Stafford and Stone area wouldlike to become involved with Young Enterpriseor would like to find out more, pleasecontact Janis Wilcox at [email protected] photos courtesy of Josh Cope, Photojournalist,[email protected]
