Apples, apricots, cherries, peaches andplums contain a cyanide compound in their leaves, stems and stones.Fatty foods, dairy products, onions and garlic can also cause severe illness.And mind where you put your drinks, signs of alcohol ingestion in dogsare very much the same as a human who has consumed too much!I wish each and every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a happyand healthy New Year. Anyway Ihad a quick scan through it andthought it worthwhile sharing as itdoes actually have a point … “Weall carry our mobile phones withnames & numbers stored in theirmemories. If one of us were to beinvolved in an accident or weretaken ill, the people attending uswould have the mobile phone butwouldn't know who to call out ofthe hundreds of numbers stored. Theidea was thought up by a paramedicwho found that when he went to thescenes of accidents there werealways mobile phones with patientsbut they didn't know which numberto call. All you need to do is storethe number of a contact person orpersons who should be contactedduring emergency under the name'ICE' For more than one contactname simply enter ICE1, ICE2 andICE3, etc.In an emergency situation,Emergency Service personnel andhospital staff will be able to quicklycontact the right person by simplydialling the number you have storedas 'ICE'.”♣The Superior Court of Justicehas finally ruled that Vera Town Hallis responsible for compensatingHelen and Len Prior. But will theyever be paid?Helen and Len Prior's house in Verawas demolished in 2008, althoughit had all the correct buildinglicences. Theirs is the only house tohave been demolished for illegalconstruction on non-urban land inthe Levante area, and it has sownthe seeds of a judicial process whichthreatens to go on interminably inspite of the latest court rulings. In2009 the highest court in Spain, theConstitutional Court, ruled theirdemolition to be illegal and the casewas sent for retrial even though thehouse was already demolished. In2010 the demolition order was re-instated. The court ruled that theVera Council had issued the licenceknowing full well that its intendeduse bore no relation to legal activityon non-urbanisable land. VeraCouncil tried to avoid responsibility,appealing this decision and blamingthe Junta de Andalucía instead. InNovember 2012, almost five yearsafter the demolition, the SuperiorCourt has finally decided, with nofurther appeals available, that VeraCouncil is responsible. Helen and

This year theUnesco Club and the NationalUnion of Moors & ChristiansFiestas (Undef) signed thecandidacy which would lead to thistradition gaining this classification,without distinguishing between thelocations where it is celebrated orthe different traditions which gowith this fiesta. In other words, allthe Moors & Christians celebrationswould be awarded the samedistinction. In Almería provincethere are numerous towns whichevery year mark the event of the Re-conquest, among them Carbonerasand Mojácar. There would becountless benefits for these townsshould the classification beawarded, particularly in terms ofinternational awareness andfinancial assistance.♣Here’s an interesting article Ifound on chocolate. This beneficialeffect may be related to theflavonoids in chocolate. Flavonoidsappear to be protective againstcardiovascular disease throughantioxidant, anti-clotting and anti-inflammatory properties. It's alsopossible that these flavonoids maydecrease blood concentrations ofbad cholesterol and reduce bloodpressure. The study also noted thatwhile dark chocolate had beenlinked to benefits for the heart in thepast, milk chocolate was thepreferred option in Sweden and inthe study. However, a lot moreresearch is needed and these resultsshould not be used as an excuse formen to eat chocolate as analternative to regular exercise oreating a healthy diet to reduce theirrisk of stroke. The authors of thestudy warned of the high sugar andfat content of chocolate. Registration Nº: CG027972012 TIN: C000114829XThe Universal Wonderful Street Academy is a non profitorganization created to care for children living on thestreets of Accra, the capital city of Ghana.The idea was born after four Spanish friends from Mojácarand Granada had visited the country to participate in avolunteering program with a local organization and foundout that there was a huge number of children who lived inextreme poverty and were left to fend for themselves.Together with a commited Ghanaian they decided to createa non profit organization to build up regular support tocare for these deprived children, most of them living inJames Town a very poor and illiterate community area ofAccra.The Organization runs a non-formal school from 8.30am to 1.30pmMonday to Friday for children aged 6 to 16 years. It aims to take thechildren off the streets and into a classroom where they can beeducated, clothed and fed with one meal a day at no cost.Regularly the Academy sends volunteers to visit their families tomake them aware of the importance of education and to encouragethem to send their children to the school.The Academy’s values:We believe in AFRICAN VALUES: collectivism, honour, dignity,solidarity, communal life, cooperation, harmony.The Academy’s method:A non-bureaucratic, simple, direct and efficient support to STREETCHILDREN.The Academy’s objectives:a) Provide free basic education to max. 100 children who live inpoverty and have no place provided for them in the State’s formaleducation system. Eventually to facilitate them access to formaleducation or vocational training school.b) Provide a nutritionally complete balanced daily meal for eachchild.

c) Provide a Health Card for each child, ensuring him/her of medicaltreatment under Ghana’s State health care programme.Although they lack almost everything the children are happy. Theirenthusiasm is amazing, the Academy is everything to them. It is aschool, a games centre, a shelter, a place to eat, a place to play withfriends and, in many ways, home.The Academy is lacking in resources. As it is a non-profit organization,it depends on sporadic donations coming from companies, individuals

and volunteers. It barely covers the cost of theprogram or even the cost of books or meat inthe daily meal. Ah! Christmas – Good! I will admit that I can be a bitGrinchy about Christmas, but that is only because Ifirmly believe that Christmas occurs on the 25thDecember, not midway through October.I mean, we don’t start getting all excited aboutMidsummer’s Day in April, do we? So why must wework ourselves into a lather about Christmas twomonths before it actually happens?I refuse to get even remotely interested in anythingChristmassy until December. Mention Christmas to meon 30th November, and I guarantee you will get a dustyanswer, but from 1st December I will officiallyrecognise that Christmas exists.Christmas is among my fortes. I have a talent forChristmas. Looking back over the years I admit thatmy achievements may be less than stellar comparedwith the great and good, and maybe even with thosewho consider themselves great and good.But it’s not what you do, it’s how you do it, (I thinksomeone famous said that) and it’s how I do Christmasthat is one of my great achievements.I plan it meticulously. SHORE FISHING ... ‘Mr T’ caught a 2.1/2lb Dorada bream off the Indalo HotelArm, stick float, size 10 hook and lightline, bait was rag worm. It was a goodfight obviously and much enjoyed. ‘MrT’ tells me the mullet seem to havedisappeared from the area. Maybe theresult of September’s floods?‘Spanish Alex’ caught a better dorada,in October I think it was, this fishweighed in at 8lbs. ‘London Bill’ confirmed the biggermullet have disappeared from much ofMojacar’s coastline although he is stillcatching a few in and around Garrucha.He caught a 3lb sea bass last week; okno monster but at least it’s keepable.The biggest I heard of was a 9.1/2lberoff the beach at Vera last year.BOAT FISHING ... After a 10 day breakdue to poor sea conditions ‘Orca Steve’took the first opportunity of a decentday to get back out fishing accompaniedby ‘Squiddly Sid’, ‘Dennis the menace’,‘Conger David’ and ‘Stay behind Brian’,all members of the Albox fishing club.The conditions were perfect with a lightnorth westerly wind and no swell so thelads wanted to drift across the holesbehind the Garrucha harbour wall totry and get a conger eel or somethingbig. The last few occasions Steve fishedthe deep holes he didn't get a bite so hewas a little sceptical as to what theywould get. After an hour and a half offishing in 450ft nobody on the boat hadeven had a bite so Steve took thedecision to try shallower water andmoved the boat to an area opposite thebig Mojacar 4 star hotels and set up todrift from 35ft to 100ft in the light wind.They were soon into fish catchingpickerels, small pandoras, small redsnappers and cleaver wrasse. Dennislanded the biggest weaver fish Steve

had ever seen and after some carefulhandling this was put to one side readyfor the stew pot. Steve was the first toget a trigger fish and it was a good sizedone taking the raw prawn on a size 4hook. Shortly afterwards he had a greattake and landed two triggers and twopickerels on the same trace which gavehis new lightweight rod a good test butit held out magnificently.‘Squiddly Sid’ got a similar take shortlyafter and landed two trigger fish of hisown, he actually had three triggers onbut one got off as they were trying to netthem. The fishing stayed brisk and theylanded a total of eleven triggers betweenthe four of them. Brian had some fun ofhis own bringing aboard three nice sizedOctopuses.They stayed out well into the afternoonand enjoyed the great sea conditionsand warm winter sunshine discussingthe best way to cook our fish. The following Monday, which was againa lovely calm day with a light offshorewind and no swell, Steve was joined by‘Mike the Dinghy’ (dinghy for sale ifanyone is interested), ‘Elaine the FishingDoctor’ who is over from the UK for afew days and her dad Eric from theZurgena shooting club and who was akeen Salmon fisherman when he lived inScotland a few years ago.Steve had no hesitation in taking thecrew to the shallow area opposite thebig Mojacar hotels where he had goodsuccess previously. They started fishingat a depth of 35ft drifting slowly out to adepth of 100ft catching pickerels,pandoras, weavers, small red snappersand cleaver wrasse. Eric had a good takeand landed a reasonable red snappershortly followed by Elaine who broughtaboard a tub gurnard. The fishing keptthem all busy for a while with the smallcritters pinching most of the bait fromthe number 4 hooks. At one stage severalshoals of bait fish pitted the calm surfacewhich indicated there was predator fishin the area. This was confirmed shortlyafter when Mike got a fantastic take andbrought aboard a good Atlantic Scadafter a 10 minute battle which he handledperfectly on light tackle. The fish tookraw prawn bait and was probablyattracted by the smaller fish around thebait. The fishing dropped off when thewind got up and changed direction sothey returned to port for a beer andtapas and to chat about our days fishing

adventure.Important new license information ... Ihave some good news about Andaluciancoarse fishing licenses and we have anew loophole. Not easy to do by anymeans, the main problem is a trip (inperson) to Malaga. Although most ofthe paperwork can be done on theinternet an appointment must beattended in Malaga. It is not clear at thistime if the license issued will cover fishingin other regions. No NIE number isnecessary if proof of where one lives inthe UK is produced and an English rodlicense will be required plus passport.The cost as far as I can work out is€91.00. It doesn’t say how long thelicense is for though and something elsewe will have to find out.I’m told there is a new rule in Andaluciathat tourists without an NIE number canfish Andalucian shores (And sea fishingfrom a boat) without licenses but until Iactually see the piece of paper I suggestyou presume otherwise and use ourother beach and boat fishing NIEloophole.COARSE FISHING ... Two Murciacompetition matches weighed in 24lbsat Blanca and 12lbs on the River Segura.The Albox fishing club meets every twoweeks or so at Bar Wassy.
