His energy and intellectual curiosity led him to challenge several important facets of colonial society

As a printer, he was cautious; writer, he edged toward new ideas but fearfully drew back; as an engineer, he was innovative and accurate in his analysis but less skillful in its execution; as a politician, he combined an admirable defense of what he believed right with a less commendable inflexibility and ineptness in attaining it
