Dr. Watkins preached at the National Prayer Service in Washington, D.C. on January 21, 2009, the day af- ter President Obama’s inauguration. She also served a term on President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and offered the call to worship at the President’s second National Prayer Service in 2013. She is married to Rev. Dr. Rick Lowry a seminary professor and well know preacher and lecturer at disciple gatherings. We elected Rev. Teresa (Terri) Hord Owens as our next General Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). A Disciple since young adulthood, she is currently dean of students at the University of Chicago Divinity School and pastor of First Christian Church of Downers Grove, IL. Rev. Owens is widely sought after as a preacher, speaker and workshop facilitator. Her ministry and intellectual interests include a theology of reconciliation, cultural intelligence, developing inclusive and multi-cultural congregations, and the men- toring of youth and young adults. She is married to Walter Owens, Jr., with whom she will soon celebrate 30 years of marriage. The search committee noted her skills in discernment, spiritual discipline and proc- lamation of the Word, but also as a listener. The committee recognized that leading the Church in this day and age requires a certain business acumen as well as a heart for ministry. We see that Terri brings that special mix of academic, execu- tive and pastoral qualities that are required for leading the Disciples through this time in our history. The Perry Christian First Christian Church Disciples of Christ

I look forward to being back with you this coming Sunday and our next few weeks

together. This is an exciting time and it will be a very busy time. After a week of

family vacation with my wife and son, my wife and I are currently attending the

General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). The General As-

sembly meets every two years for worship, study sessions and to conduct the busi-

ness of the church. One of the main items of business at this year’s assembly is the

election of a new General Minister and President of the Christian Church

(Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. They serve a six-year term

and can be reelected for one other term.

Rev. Dr. Sharon E. Watkins is the outgoing General Minister and President as she

has served 12 years in that position. She was the minister of Disciples Christian

Church in Bartlesville, Oklahoma prior to her being selected to lead us. She had

previously served as a missionary in the Congo. Dr. Watkins preached at the

National Prayer Service in Washington, D.C. on January 21, 2009, the day af-

ter President Obama’s inauguration. She also served a term on President Obama’s

Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and offered the

call to worship at the President’s second National Prayer Service in 2013. She is

married to Rev. Dr. Rick Lowry a seminary professor and well know preacher and

lecturer at disciple gatherings.

We elected Rev. Teresa (Terri) Hord Owens as our next General Minister and

President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). A Disciple since young

adulthood, she is currently dean of students at the University of Chicago Divinity

School and pastor of First Christian Church of Downers Grove, IL.

Rev. Owens is widely sought after as a preacher, speaker and workshop facilitator.

Her ministry and intellectual interests include a theology of reconciliation, cultural

intelligence, developing inclusive and multi-cultural congregations, and the men-

toring of youth and young adults. She is married to Walter Owens, Jr., with whom

she will soon celebrate 30 years of marriage.

The search committee noted her skills in discernment, spiritual discipline and proc-

lamation of the Word, but also as a listener. The committee recognized that leading

the Church in this day and age requires a certain business acumen as well as a

heart for ministry. We see that Terri brings that special mix of academic, execu-

tive and pastoral qualities that are required for leading the Disciples through this

time in our history.
