FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK “Jesus, Master! Have pity on us!” We are not unlike the lepers in the Gospel passage this weekend who call out to Jesus as He journeys to Jerusalem. We continually call out to Jesus. Jesus is present to us in our pain and suffering. This is most evident in His presence among us in the Blessed Sacrament. We are now the ones who are journeying along the way in the hustle and bustle of our lives. Jesus waits for us in the tabernacle, and in exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. I would love to have Adoration for a more extended period of time beginning on First Wednesdays from the end of morning Mass to the normal time of 6:15 p.m. Please consider taking some time out of your day to spend an hour with Jesus. This would likely begin in December, if we have people committed to the hours of Adoration. It would also give our school children a chance to be exposed to the beauty of Adoration because they already come to the church for Confession each Wednesday. There are many benefits to Adoration which I’ll touch on in subsequent bulletins. Please consider spending some time with Jesus as we journey through our lives. Next weekend, October 20, I’ll publish the financial reports of the 4 parishes in the bulletin. I’ll be celebrating all the Masses at St. Rose and St. Patrick so I can address the situations in those two churches. I’d encourage the parishioners of those parishes to make an effort to attend those Masses. I won’t directly address St. Bernard and Church of the Atonement this year because they are fairly straight forward in their collections and financial situations. However, let’s make no mistake, all of our collections need to increase. Thank you for your continued support of the church. In Christ Jesus, Fr. Hartge
CATECHISM CORNER 1503: Christ’s compassion toward the sick and His many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that “God has visited His people“ and that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; He has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; He is the physician the sick have need of. His compassion toward all who suffer goes so far that He identifies Himself with them: “I was sick and you visited me.” His preferential love for the sick has not ceased through the centuries to draw the very special attention of Christians toward all those who suffer in body and soul. It is the source of tireless efforts to comfort them.
1504: Often Jesus asks the sick to believe. He makes use of signs to heal: spittle and the laying on of hands, mud and washing. The sick try to touch Him, “for power came forth from Him and healed them all.“ And so in the sacraments Christ continues to “touch“ us in order to heal us.
550: The coming of God’s Kingdom means the defeat of Satan’s: “If it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the Kingdom of God has come upon you.” Jesus’ exorcisms free some individuals from the domination of demons. They anticipate Jesus’ great victory over “the ruler of this world.” The Kingdom of God will be definitively established through Christ’s cross: “God reigned from the wood.”
1151: Signs taken up by Christ. In His preaching, the Lord Jesus often makes use of the signs of creation to make known the mysteries of the Kingdom of God. He performs healings and illustrates His preaching with physical signs or symbolic gestures. He gives new meaning to the deeds and signs of the Old Covenant, above all to the Exodus and the Passover, for He Himself is the meaning of all these signs.
1152: Sacramental signs. Since Pentecost, it is through the sacramental signs of His Church that the Holy Spirit carries on the work of sanctification. The Sacraments of the Church do not abolish but purify and integrate all the richness of the signs and symbols of the cosmos and of social life. Further, they fulfill the types and figures of the Old Covenant, signify and make actively present the salvation wrought by Christ, and prefigure and anticipate the glory of heaven.
