TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
For High Cholesterol, Statins Are Way to Go DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I told my doctor that I no longer wanted to take a statin drug. I had read so much about statins and am on meds for cholesterol and high blood pressure. I am 73, and other than having arthritis in my knees, I am not having problems.
My doctor put me on fenofibrate. I am due for my yearly checkup in a few months and don’t really know yet how this is working on my cholesterol. I was wondering what your feelings are about this drug. -- RS
ANSWER: I’ve written a lot about statins, which have been proven to save lives and reduce heart attacks in people with heart disease and also in some people at higher-than-average risk for heart disease. In contrast, although non-statin medications reduce cholesterol, they have not been proven to do what they are really intended to do, which is to prevent heart disease and death.
I suspect that medications like fenofibrate do have a small benefit in protecting the heart; however, I would not use them unless the side effects of statins made it impossible to take one. Often, people intolerant of one statin do well on another. For people at high risk, such as those with previous heart attack or known blockages, I would try a different class of medication. For people at lower risk, I would work on a diet proven to reduce heart disease risk, such as the Mediterranean diet, and encourage regular exercise and use medications such as fenofibrate sparingly or not at all.
Another medication, ezitimibe (Zetia or Ezetrol), also lowers cholesterol but without convincing proof that it lowers heart disease risk. It may be that the mechanism by which statins reduce heart risk is not just through lowering cholesterol.
Learn more about high cholesterol and how to control it in the cholesterol booklet. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 201W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery.
***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 81 years old and in good health. I am 5 feet, 11 inches tall and weigh 168 pounds, the same as in 1950. My blood pressure and cholesterol are good on treatment, and my pulse is 62. I drink an energy drink three or four times a week after the noon meal, when I don’t take a nap and need to keep going. I am a farmer, and am active every day. Are these energy drinks harmful to me? -- L.M.W.
ANSWER: The caffeine in one energy drink is about 160 mg per 16-ounce can, which is the equivalent of somewhere around a cup or two of regular coffee, depending on how strong you make it. That much caffeine doesn’t cause problems for most people, especially for those who are used to it. However, it also has 52 grams of sugar -- about 14 teaspoons. My advice is to stick with coffee. You will save money and reduce your sugar intake a lot.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will
incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www.rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive Orlando, FL 32803.

“During hot summer months, it’s important for pet parents to pay extra attention to their dogs’ coats,” said Dr. Simon Starkey, veterinary expert for PetSmart. “Pets need to be protected from sun and excessive heat.” (Family Features) Stay Hydrated: In the summer, pet parents need to help keep pets hydrated and make water accessible, even outdoors. Some pets simply don’t drink enough water, so adding wet food to their regular dry food diet is a great option. Wet food contains more moisture and can help pets stay hydrated when it’s hot outside. However, wet food is not a substitute for drinking water, so refresh water bowls several times throughout the day.

Over Age 50? Make Long-Term Care Plans Before They Are Needed (Family Features) The best time to make decisions regarding long-term care is well before it’s needed. An unexpected illness or injury may force you or a loved one into making hasty decisions. Staying In Charge - An important part of long-term care planning is outlining how you would like things to be handled. Expressing preferences clearly about how any declines in ADLs should be handled, what financial resources are available, and who should provide needed care is a good way to retain control. All adults over age 18 should execute legal documents that appoint one or more individuals to make health care and financial decisions for them in the event they become unable to make decisions for themselves. An attorney can also prepare an advance care directive, which is a set of written instructions detailing what medical care you want or do not want.

Now in its 26th year, National Recovery Month is a national observance held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those substance and/or mental health disorders to live a healthy and rewarding life. This year’s theme, “Join the Voices for Recovery: Visible, Vocal, Valuable,” encourages people to openly speak-up about mental and substance use disorders and the reality of recovery, and promotes ways individuals can recognize behavioral health issues and reach out for help.
Locally, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence-Rochester Area (NCADD-RA) is celebrating recovery with the theatrical production “Moments…An Evening with Bill W.” This one-man show, written by Bill McNiff and performed by Andrew Matthews, tells the true story of Bill Wilson, the co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous. The story takes place in New York City in 1950. The special guest is Bill W who recently learned of the passing of his partner, life-long friend and co-founder of AA Dr. Bob. Join us for this theatrical event from 7:00-8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 25, 2015 at Asbury First United Methodist Church, Fellowship Hall, 1050 East Avenue, Rochester NY. Joining us for opening remarks will be Robert Lindsey from Friends of Recovery New York and Family Recovery Network. Registration for the event begins at 6:30 p.m.
Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Cost is $15 if requesting a certificate

Recovery Month spreads the positive message that behavioral health is essential to overall health, that prevention works, treatment is effective and people can and do recover. The goal is to encourage communities to take action to help expand and improve the availability of effective prevention, treatment and recovery services for those in need.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Sept. 27, 1869, in Kansas, Ellis County sheriff Wild Bill
Hickok responds to a bar brawl and kills one man. Weeks later
he killed a second man in the name of law enforcement. While
his brutal ways were effective, local citizens were less than
impressed. At the next election Hickok was voted out.
Tips for long-distance caregivers
Caring for a friend or family member who has cancer is not easy. It may only get more difficult when a caregiver lives far away.
Long-distance caregiving may not be ideal for the patient or the caregiver, but it’s sometimes the only option. Long- distance caregivers can expect their out-of-pocket expenses to be higher, as the cost of travel alone is likely to be considerable. While long-distance caregiving may not be ideal, the American Cancer Society offers the following tips to help men and women entrusted with caring for a cancer-stricken friend or family member from afar.
• Make sure your loved one’s home is safe. When you get the chance to visit your loved one’s home, make the most of that visit and ensure his or her home is safe. If the illness has made things more difficult around the house, address any of these issues before you return home. Patients who receive chemotherapy are often weakened after treatment, so it can help to install some grab bars in the bathroom or purchase a shower seat to reduce the risk of falling in the shower. In addition, make sure handrails inside and outside the home are secure. If they’re loose, tighten them so they provide adequate support.
• Clean up around the house. Cancer patients may also be too weak to keep up with their chores around the house. A dirty home can be depressing to men and women battling cancer, so clean up around the house to brighten the home and reduce the risk of an insect or rodent infestation.
• Be ready for a crisis. No one wants to imagine a situation in which his or her loved one suffering from cancer has an emergency, but caregivers need to do just that. Have someone you can count on nearby to check on your friend or family member if you suddenly cannot reach the cancer patient. Introduce yourself to your loved one’s next-door neighbor or meet a close friend who lives nearby that you can contact should your friend or family member prove difficult to reach.
• Make a list of medications and update it regularly. Cancer patients often take certain medications as part of their treatment and recovery, and caregivers should make a list of these medications, periodically updating the list as the treatment and recovery process progresses.
• Make sure your loved one has a cell phone. Though it might seem hard to believe, some people, especially the elderly, still do not have cellular phones. When serving as a long-distance caregiver, it’s imperative that you can easily and routinely reach your cancer-stricken friend or relative. Cancer treatment might make it difficult for him or her to get to a land line, so be sure he or she has a cell phone that he or she can carry with them at all times. Program important numbers, including your own number, as well as his or her physician’s and a neighbor’s or nearby relative’s number, into the phone.
• Stay in touch with the patient’s physician. While a physician might not be able to share all the details of your loved one’s condition, you can keep in touch with him or her to stay abreast of how the treatment and recovery process is going. A physician can help you tailor your caregiving to best manage the patient’s needs, adjusting that plan as the treatment and recovery process evolves.

Wyoming County SPCA 110th Birthday Celebration - Special heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who came out to the shelter to help us celebrate and start a new chapter! It meant so much to all of us connected with the shelter and also to all our 4 legged friends. It was so good to see the community come together for such a good cause.
Parents, taxpayers, citizens, let’s not waste another year. What would happen to our society if we spent twice as much time and money on education as we do now? And not just on the wealthy, but on everyone, especially on everyone. What if every six-year-old was reading, if math and science were treated as opportunities, not chores, if community service and leadership got as much space in the local paper and on TV as sports do? The real win is creating a generation that actually delights in learning. Once people want to learn, there are more self-
directed avenues open than ever before. I wonder how many people will have to speak up before we end up redefining what ‘good enough’ looks like when it came to the single most important thing we do for our future and our kids.
Seth Godin
The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to Pat O’Connell of Solid Scapes in Geneseo. He graciously stopped by and installed some engraved bricks into our new Walkway of Remembrance. Pat also taught us how to install future bricks and generously donated some tools and other items to make the process easier for us. We greatly appreciate his donation of time & talent!!
A HUGE thank you to the Avon Village water girl. Once again she has kept the flowers in the village looking beautiful. All Avon residents should be proud of our colorful display throughout the village. Thanks for doing such a great job.
Congrats Coach Englert on 100 wins! Congrats to achieving the 100 win milestone, after winning the first game of the season beating Bolivar 42-0. God bless your season and future seasons.
Subsidized living- I was on the list for this - but when I call the receptionist is so rude and treats me like I am beneath her to talk to - I just want to ask a couple questions but no one will answer or return calls- So I had an advocate call for me because sometimes I have a communication problem and they told me to stop having her call. Help! Where do I go from here and why does she feel she can talk to me that way? I am polite, not pushy. She is getting paid to do a job but I am so upset after I get off the phone I just cry.
Stolen Kayak - My name is Jack. I am 12 years old. Last Saturday my dad and I were going Kayaking. We were driving on [Local] Rte and my Kayak fell off the trailer. When we circled back to pick it up --- someone took it! STOLE IT! Whoever took this please be kind and return it to the police department. What did your parents teach you???
If more fathers took their children to work with them and taught them life lessons and a good day’s work, we wouldn’t be in such a mess as a country. Farmers work crazy long hours and try to spend time with their families whenever possible. They are dedicated to their work and dedicated to their families.
They are also the backbone of America. If you’re in too much of a rush and can’t wait a few minutes behind a tractor, then you are in too much of a hurry. Please take time to appreciate little things in life like a father spending time with his child.
Sincerely, The farmers who feeds you 3x a day
On the morning of the 4th of July you ran over and killed my black and white cat in [local town] and never stopped. You did not have the decency to try and find out who the owner is and let me know what happened. He was a healthy 13 year old cat so dearly loved and now so horribly missed by both myself and his best friend, Buddy. Our hearts are broken. If you had been going the 10 mph speed limit you never would have killed him. All I want to know is what happened that put him in the road in front of your car?
