Mcneil and paMphilon Meet the table
really funny… perhaps we should make it more serious. The audience start to take over.Steve(M&P): Our show tends to be extremely responsive to the audiences. We find our show comes together in front of them.
Sam(M&P): Describe The Table in 2 words:Mark(TT): Beautiful and funny. [Long pause.]Nick(TT): …I don’t think he was being serious about the 2 words. It’s extreme puppetry; not exactly raucous but certainly funny and surprising. We find it hard to explain to punters, but audiences have been brilliantly receptive.Mark(TT): We used to promote our show by taking the puppets onto the streets as a live demo… but this year our puppet has a cardboard head.Sam(M&P): Do people have pre-existing ideas about puppety?Mark(TT): Of course they do. If we were a kid’s show, we could use the word ‘puppets’ and sell tickets instantly. Adult puppetry, meanwhile, is regarded as either filthy or tedious. The Table is neither, and it’s a great quality show.Steve(M&P): What sets you apart from others?Mark(TT): We call our show a triptych – or ‘three-parter’ – the main section of which is about a guy who’s stuck on a table. He’s about a foot and a half high, operated by three people, and sets off to perform a twelve hour biblical epic before getting distracted by explaining it. Then he realises that he’s never got off this table, (which is the Beckett-esque
element.) He gets himself into various dramaturgical inconsistencies and problems.Steve(TT): So it’s self-referential about the notion of being a puppet?Mark(TT): Yes, and also about how big your world is. Then there are two more sections in which we use various other theatrical and puppetry components.Nick(TT): It’s like pulling the rug out from under the audience each time, as we keep surprising them with new moments.Sam(M&P): Where does all this originate from?Nick(TT): We’re all actors first who learned puppetry as a storytelling device. I design and create the puppets, while Sean directs.Mark(TT): The company formed 15 years ago, then 3 or 4 years ago we just about managed to scrape a living and quit the day job.Steve(M&P): In just 12 years! There we go, Sam, only 11 years left for us.Mark(TT): I’m sure it’ll only take you 6 months!Steve(M&P): How are the crowds for your show at 10pm? Mark(TT): They’ve been really good fun. Lots of laughter. Actually we’re worried whether we’ve gone too far… it’s become
Table(TT): That’s what we’re learning, realising. Our show is changing every night. For a puppet that’s really unusual.

Nobody could deny that Edinburgh Festival Fringe has infested the online social media world. Box Clever, who’ve enjoyed exploring performance engagement through mediums like Facebook and Twitter, decided to bring social media back to the streets. Literally.
Their 6ft tall polyethelene ‘facebook page’ houses all the features you’d expect, from writable statuses to photos you can pose in. Whose page is it? The character in their play, Time for the Good looking boy, of course. “It helps providereal flavour of the character’s life and situation” said writer Michael Wicherek, “to understand his backstory so to speak.”
Look out for the page on the Royal Mile or at Pleasance Courtyard.Time For The Good Looking Boy, Pleasance Dome, 4-29Aug (Not6), 14:50
