come experience all we offer! Palisade is a rich, agricultural and recreational area that lies on the “western slope” of
the rocky Mountains. it is surrounded by a scenic backdrop of DeBeque Canyon to the northeast; towering Book Cliffs to the north; 10,500-foot grand Mesa to the east, and a pastoral setting of orchards and vineyards on east Orchard Mesa to the south.
The lifeline of Palisade’s agriculture, the colorado river, has continually changed its course over millions of years, leaving behind rich sediments. early-morning winds funnel from Colorado’s uplands through DeBeque Canyon, providing what is known as the “Million dollar Breeze.” These winds significantly reduce frost conditions and provide a temperate climate. An extensive system of irrigation canals provides the final touch for ideal growing conditions.
Alluring Flavors in Colorado’s Fruit & Wine Countrysatisfy your hunger to eat fresh and local! Palisade is the Peach capital of colorado. Aside from peaches, our area produces excellent apples, apricots, cherries, pears, nectarines and plums. Just-picked fruit and produce, as well as packaged fruit products, are abundant at roadside stands and orchards.
As the Wine capital of colorado, the greatest concentration of wineries and vineyards is found in Palisade. every winery offers tastings, award-winning wines, and unique gifts. take a self-guided tour and sample these wines yourself. Or hire a tour and leave the driving to others (see Agri-Tour Chart left). taste Merlots, Cabernets, Chardonnays, rieslings, Ports and more.
educational, fun & tasty, take an agri-tour. Meet the growers and tour orchards, vineyards and wineries; alpaca, hops and lavender farms, a microbrewery and a distillery. See Chart at left.
Flourishing Arts & FestivalsAmong Palisade’s dramatic setting is a thriving art community. encounter art and artists at local art galleries, pottery studios, and at the many Festivals. See Event Schedule at left.
Outdoor Recreation & AdventureBiking– explore a variety of trails & roads for Mountain Bikes, road rides and easy Cruiser rides. Mountain bike trails range from beginner rides on Horse Mountain to challenging climbs up the new Palisade rim Mountain Bike trail that overlooks the grand Valley. For road touring or cruising, take one of three routes of the Fruit & Wine Byway. Meander through orchards and vineyards, and visit a few wineries along the way. rentals and bike sales are available in Palisade. See Maps for routes.
river Floats– experience a relaxing float down the Colorado River surrounded by stunning scenery. trips start from Palisade’s riverbend Park and float to James M. robb Colorado river state Park at Corn Lake. Watch for blue herons and eagles! guided float trips, raft and stand up paddle board rentals and lessons are available in Palisade.
Hiking– For the best views of the valley, hike the Mt. garfield trail. Four miles east on interstate 70, trails lead up Coal and Main Canyons into the Little Bookcliffs Wild Horse Range - one of three federally-protected wild horse areas in the U.s.
disc golf– Play the 18-hole course on the west end of riverbend Park, considered one of the best courses in the state. sightseeing– Choose a drive through charming local vineyards and orchards, or head up the grand Mesa national scenic Byway, or visit the majestic canyons and monoliths of the nearby colorado national Monument. grand Mesa is known as the world’s largest “flat top mountain,” and is home to moose, bear, elk, and 200+ lakes. Winter - ski Powderhorn resort.
