Open Access at Salford Initial USIR Policy “Strongly Encouraged” deposits

OA Mandate announced October 2009

OA University from January 2010

Mandates deposit of new Peer Reviewed Journal Articles

Deposit of other research outputs is also strongly encouraged

The University of Salford has an Open Access Policy which requires that, from

1st January 2010, a record of all new research output be deposited in USIR.

For research outputs published in the form of peer re

viewed journal articles

authors should, wherever possible, retain the copyright of th

eir papers, so that th

e

full text can also be deposited in the repository. This should be the fin

al peer-

reviewed, pre-publication version of the paper, w

here copyright restric

ts the use

of the published version.

The deposit of other re

search outputs (i.e. published, accepted for publication, or

in the public domain) and in other formats is also strongly encouraged.

Help and advice regarding deposit is available fro

m the USIR Team:

Mandated 1st January 2010

Why Open Access? Greater impact from scientific endeavour

More rapid and more efficient progress of science

Novel information-creation using new and advanced technologies

Better assessment, better monitoring,

better management of science http://www.corporate.salford.ac.uk/leadership-management/martin-hall/blog/

Open Access Immediate Free (to use) Free (of restrictions) Access to the peer-reviewed literature (and data) Not vanity publishing Not a ‘stick anything up on the Web’

approach Moving scholarly communication

into the Web Age

Page 18: The Power of the Mandate Sue Hodges Head of Collections and Digital Developments University of Salford Gregynog Colloquium 9 th June 2010

Why Mandate? Provides a more complete picture of research output from

the institution

Ensures compliance with funders’ requirements

Raises visibility of University research

Supports authors in their work within the institution

Preserves the intellectual assets of the

University

Opens up knowledge – Putting

something back

Page 19: The Power of the Mandate Sue Hodges Head of Collections and Digital Developments University of Salford Gregynog Colloquium 9 th June 2010

Lost Citations, Lost Impact Say, Open Access brings 50% more citations Only around 15% of research is Open Access University X is therefore losing 85% of the 50%

increase in citations that OA brings (= 42.5%) Since University X invests £100m in research

per annum …this means lost impact worth

£42.5m to the university in 1 year

Does a Mandate Work? Not in isolation Needs continued support and promotion ‘Carrot’ rather than ‘Stick’ approach Needs embedding into Research Publication

process Needs to include all types of research output
