O God, we thank you for the life of Edmund Rice.He opened his heart to Christ present in those oppressed by poverty and injustice.May we follow his example of faith and generosity. Grant us the courage and compassion of Edmund as we seek to live lives of love and service. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen

Feast Day of Blessed Edmund Rice On Tuesday 5th May, the College celebrated the Feast of Blessed Edmund Rice and we acknowledged the contribution of the Christian Brothers to our school. As you would be aware, St Leo’s was a Christian Brothers school until 1983 when the College was handed over to the Diocese. We were able to reflect on the history of the College and the charism that is an integral part of how the College has been shaped and formed. Year 7 and 8 celebrated Mass together and Br John Henry Thornber treated us to some of the story of Blessed Edmund Rice. I share some of this with you below.

Blessed Edmund Rice, founder of the Christian Brothers was born in Callan, County Kilkenny, Ireland, in 1762. As a young man, he came to the bustling city port of Waterford and worked in his uncle’s business. He was talented and energetic and became a very wealthy man. In 1785 he fell in love and married Mary Elliot. His happiness was shattered by the tragic death of his wife just four years later. Mary died in childbirth, and Edmund was left with a handicapped daughter, also named Mary. This shattering experience was the turning point in his life.

Edmund spent more and more time in prayer and in helping and empowering great numbers of people in Waterford who suffered poverty and injustice. In 1802 he set up a free school for poor young boys. Having provided for his daughter, Mary, he left his comfortable home and lived above the school he had

Influenced by the work of Nano Nagle, the founder of the Presentation Sisters, he gathered around him a group of men. These he formed into a community of religious brothers dedicated to “raising up the poor”.

Through Edmund’s meditation on the Gospel, he became more keenly aware of the oppressive social and political realities of his day. He recognised that the education system discriminated against the poor. In the unschooled and undisciplined boys of Waterford, he found images of God. With his sense of the God-given dignity of the poor, he saw education as a means by which to recognise and promote this dignity, through liberation for personal and communal empowerment.

Edmund is honoured as the founder of both the Christian Brothers and the Presentation Brothers. For more than two centuries, many have been and continue to be attracted by his vision and generosity. The mission continues today on all five continents through the ministry of Christian Brothers and laity called to serve in this vocation of Catholic Education.

The charism of the Christian Brothers calls us to “give to the poor in handfuls”. This is very much in line with our current theme for the year – putting our faith into action.I would like to thank Mr Greg Baynie, member of the College Board for all his work in preparation for this important event.

Mothers Day Mass The College hosted a Mothers Day Mass in the College Chapel. This was followed by a special breakfast. It was a great celebration for all students and the wonderful women in their lives. The event was very well attended and I would like to thank Fr Borg for again leading the celebration of this very important event.

Assistant Principal Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews A reminder to parents of Year 11 and 12 students that our Stage 6 Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews will be held from 3.20pm – 9:00pm on Wednesday 20th May (Week 5).

The Year 7 – 10 Parent/Student/ Teacher Interviews will be held on Thursday 25th June (Week 10) from 8:35am until 8:30pm. The following day will be a Staff Spirituality Day, which means that the last day of classes for Term 2 will be Wednesday 24th June.

The system to make interview bookings for the Stage 6 Parent/Student/ Teacher Interviews was opened on Wednesday and will remain open until 7am on the day of the interviews. Please note that interview time slots are limited and that the earlier you can open the website and book, the more options you will have.

Lockers Over the recent holidays the College installed new student lockers. Each student has now been issued with a new locker. The College is now moving to a system where students will leave their books in their locker throughout the day. This is an important WHS and organisational step.

Parents are asked to ensure that their son/daughter has a secure lock for their locker. I would recommend that the best option is a quality keyed lock rather than a combination lock.

At the start of next week students will be expected to leave their bags in their lockers between classes. I would ask all parents to assist in this process by ensuring that students have organised suitable arrangements for carrying their books and other equipment to class. This can easily be done by using an appropriate small bag or pencil case. To assist students in getting used to this important change to routines, students this year will have the option of carrying their bags to Periods 5 and 6.

NAPLAN Well done to Year 7 and 9 on completing the NAPLAN tests. The results of the tests will provide the College with important information about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report later in the year indicating their child’s level of achievement.

Upcoming Events I would particularly draw your attention to the following upcoming events this Term:

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability In 2015, all schools in Australia will participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability. The national data collection is an annual collection that counts the number of school students with disability and the level of reasonable educational adjustment they are provided with.

For Catholic schools in NSW this data is gathered using the CEC on-line tool that records adjustments and level of need across a range of planning domains. Updated plans will need to be completed by 7 August 2015 (Census date). Your learning support teacher/team will be supported by the Education Officer - Special Needs to undertake this work.

Information developed by the Australian Government for schools and parent/carers is available at: https://education.gov.au/what-nationally-consistent-collectiondata-school-students-disability Fact sheets for schools and for parents can be accessed at: https://education.gov.au/fact-sheets-and-resources-nationaldata-collection It is recommended that the parent/carer fact sheet be published in your next school newsletter. This will inform parents about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability. Information provided to the Australian Government is simply the number of students who meet the disability criteria and level of need, no personal or identifiable information is included.

Written consent from parents/carers is not required, however parents can ‘opt out’. For further information contact Marie Seaford 9847 0387 [email protected]

Sporting SuccessLast Thursday 7th May, the Junior and Intermediate Basketball teams competed in the BBSSSA carnival. All players showed great spirit and were wonderful representatives of the College. All teams made the Semi-Finals. The Intermediate Boys team won the grand final 48-6 and will now go on to represent the College at the NSWCCC State competition.

The Under 15 Bill Turner Cup Squad had great success defeating the previous winners Epping High School allowing them to move into the next round. A big thank you to their coaches for the many hours they have put into preparing the students for these competitions.

Peninsula Cup - Trial of New Sporting Program The College has been exploring options to further expand our representative sporting program. The Peninsula Cup is a competition played after school, predominately in the Northern Beaches during Terms 2 and 3. As a trial, the College has decided to enter a limited number of teams into the competition this year.

During this trial, the College has entered three teams: the Open Boys Soccer team, the U/16’s Boys Rugby League team and Intermediate Girls Netball team. The competition will run either on a Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon (depending on the sport) and games will generally commence between 4-4.15pm. Students will be transported to and from the competition venue by bus.

I am pleased to report that this week all teams got off to a very good start and represented the College with great pride. Both the Open Boys Soccer team and U/16’s Rugby League team registered strong wins against some tough opposition.

World Youth Day Pilgrimage Pope Francis has called the youth of the world to gather for World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland, from July 26 – 31, 2016. World Youth Day is an opportunity for each participant, and the group as a whole, to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. This spiritual pilgrimage will assist students to go forth, put their faith into action and make a positive difference to the world.

Students in Year 11, 2016 and selected students from Year 10, 2016 will have the opportunity to attend World Youth Day 2016. Last week students in Year 10 were presented with the three possible itineraries for World Youth Day. Forty students took an expression of interest form. We will be presenting the options to interested Year 9 students in the near future.

There will be a parent information night on Thursday 25 June in the Light of Christ Centre from 7.15-9pm.

Year 8 Camp and Year 11 Retreat I thank the teachers involved in the Year 8 Camp and the Year 11 Retreat for giving up their time away from their family. In particular I acknowledge Mr Louie Tiglao, Mr Ashley Sadler and Mr Adrian Gomez for their many hours spent preparing for these important experiences. By all accounts both the Year 8 Camp and the Year 11 Retreat were great learning and formation experiences for the students.

Around the Grounds Junior and Inter Girls Broken Bay Basketball CarnivalOn the 7th of May 2015, both St Leo’s junior and inter girls basketball teams travelled to Terrigal for the annual Broken Bay basketball competition. Our teams have been training every Thursday after school since the start of the year to prepare.

We played different teams from schools in Broken Bay with both St Leo’s girl’s teams making it to the semi finals.

Both teams played strongly showing great improvement throughout the day but didn’t progress to the finals.

Two of the junior team members have contributed their thoughts on the day.“We used great skills that we had learnt and were able to co-operate as a team. Our team did well in catching rebounds and running the court. I think we were good at working as a team and doing what we thought was the best way to score points. We worked hard and didn't give up even at the last second. We were all very proud with the way we played. It was a great experience for everyone and a great way to have some fun, especially as some of us had never played before”. By Kayla Mafoud and Rakeli Albino

The inter girls basketball team was pushed to the limits in every game. Everyone in the team learnt something new whether it was defence, offence, or even learning to not give up. Maisie Punt (Year 9 student) commented “I personally learnt how to use my body to block shots and once I got the hang of it, it wasn't hard at all. As a team I believe we worked extremely well. We got the ball down the court without hesitation. We all came home tired, but with huge smiles on our faces, knowing that we made the team, the coach (Ms Stimson), and ourselves proud.”

The team pushed hard in every game and made it to the semi finals, where we were defeated. Well done to all girls on a fabulous day of basketball.

Peninsula Cup Soccer St Leo’s 5/St Luke’s 0

On a cold, and wet Wednesday afternoon, the Open Boys Peninsula Cup Soccer Team played their first game in the competition. It is the first time that we have been involved in the Northern Beaches Peninsula Cup, and were lucky enough to play on our home ground - Fortress Donnelly Oval. As the weather turned ugly, the game kicked off against St Luke’s.

With a number of players missing due to Year 11 Retreat, and Year 8 camp, the walking wounded from Monday’s Gala day began strongly, and it was evident that we had the stronger team but needed to ensure that we converted our chances in front of goal. The first goal came from great set-up from the back four followed by a rocket of a shot by Anthony Kelly that the goalkeeper couldn’t handle and fumbled into the path of striker Matthew Machado. St Leo’s 1-0.

This trend continued throughout the first half, and it wasn’t long before the advantage was doubled with captain Oliver Hing scoring a great goal just before half time. Half-time 2-0.

Not much needed to be said at half-time by either coach other than continue what you’re doing, and instead of doing this the Leo’s boys became more dominant in the second half, restricting the opposition to half chances. Matt Machado led the attack for St Leo’s and scored another two in the second half to finish with 3 for the game, along with Harvey Timms finding the back of the net.

Full Time: St Leo’s 5 – St Luke’s 0.

The weekly Peninsula Cup continues next week with another home game for the Leo’s boys but with a stronger test against the might of Broken Bay rivals St Paul’s. Kick-off: 4:00pm Wednesday at Fortress Donnelly.

I want to congratulate the boys on a fantastic performance, and wish them the best of luck for their upcoming fixtures.

St. Leo’s Vs The PeninsulaThis Week St Leo’s College played their first round of representative sport in the Peninsula Cup on the Northern Beaches. The Peninsula Cup consists of mainly Northern Beaches schools. The Netball will be played each Tuesday and the Soccer & Rugby League will be played each Wednesday afternoon/evening.

PeninsulaThe U/16’s girls netball team headed up to the Northern Beaches with great excitement not knowing fully what to expect. They arrived at the central venue in Curl Curl for the competition and played two games this round against Mater Maria and Barrenjoey HS. Both games were very tight and the other teams got up by one or two goals only narrowly defeating us on the day. It was very new to the girls playing on grass courts and took some time to adjust. However, they will be back and next round stronger then ever before.

I want to congratulate the girls on their behaviour and enthusiasm displayed during this round and I have no doubt that in the upcoming rounds the girls will be a force to reckon with.

Rugby League

The bus departed the College for the Northern Beaches and we were on our way to Freshwater for our first round of the Peninsula Cup. During the trip our U/16’s team were very silent there was not much said on the bus. Perhaps there were a number of thoughts going through their head such as: How strong will the teams be? Will they be bigger then us? How many rep players do they have? What will we do without our Year 11’s who were on retreat? A dark cloud then came over as we begun to head into the Beaches territory it followed with even more silence before the dark cloud from the heavens above let down buckets of water upon arrival to our venue. The boys once again were unsure, they questioned themselves, and their own capabilities. They were not keen in playing in the pouring down rain but as they stepped off the bus they became a man and realised the other teams are human just like them. With their new jerseys, the new competition and the opportunity to represent the College their enthusiasm and self belief grew. They were drenched in water and we moved straight into our routine warm-up with a bit of a difference to warm-up quickly and raise that heart rate to the level needed for the two games ahead of us.

The siren went it was time to run onto the field. The boys started the first 5 minutes of the game with great fire and strength hitting the line with speed and power soon breaking through the oppositions line to score. The momentum grew, as did our confidence eventually winning the first game convincingly against Oxford Falls Grammar.

The first game had ended and the boys were stoked about their win but had some self doubt for the next game against Northern Beaches Christian School who had larger players then us. The same starting team took the field. The boys soon realised that they had what it took to break the line, loose the footing of one of oppositions defensive players by running through our plays and utilizing our speed out wide to capitalise on the team. At half time we were winning exceptionally well and not much needed to be said. We decided it was an opportunity while we were up to throw more ball around and put our game plays into practice in a game situation. We pulled off another try or two however we began to tire and the opposition came back. With 3 minutes to go we were only up by one try and anything could happen so we went back to basics for the last 3 minutes. With about 20 seconds to go I shouted out from the side line, ‘lions’, a

PAGE 11

15TH MAY 2015

kick was put through and with no fullback in place and the speed of Jake Seiler we were able to score on the siren and finish to win two tries up.

Special mention to Keeley Bowen who played extremely well and hit those holes well. With his speed once he was through there was no catching him. Jordan Do Razario had great ball handling skills and vision who directed our plays with precision finding gaps for our players to hit the line. Jake Seiler combined with Keeley were unstoppable, Jake’s speed proved an asset on the team and his defense was phenominal. Russell Yates and James Roworth were our work

horses, they got those yards we needed for our backs to capitalise. They are true warrior of the game. Well done also to our year 9’s, Jack Dempsey, Rohan Wood and Blake Thompson- Doolan who filled in to make up the number in the absence of our year 11’s. They too played extremely well with Jack playing inside Jordan, Blake adding to the strength of our forwards and Rohan adding to our speed out wide on the wing.

I have not mentioned every player but I cannot take away from the way they played as well. They truly

played as a team. Not one of them was an individual player. I look forward to hopefully being part of more of their success in the future. Next Week they take on our long time rivals Barrenjoey HS.

Bill Turner Cup - Round 1

On Thursday afternoon our Under 15 Bill Turner Cup Soccer Squad headed off to Hall Park in Ryde for the first round of the competition. This is the first time that St Leo’s has entered the competition, and were drawn against Sydney North favourites Epping Boys High School.

Without a trial game and limited training sessions it was difficult to know what to expect from the boys, and in the first 5 minutes it showed that many of the boys had not played with each other before, and Epping had a number of good opportunities. After the initial barrage of attacks, we found our groove, and began to move the ball around the pitch well. It was a very even first half, with chances for both sides. Late in the second half a great passing move down the right hand side from Ryan Sweeney (Year 9), and Ryan Stack (Year 9) we were awarded a free-kick in an attacking position. As a good captain does Harvey Timms (Year 10) took control of the situation, and finished off a well organised set piece to put St Leo’s 1-0 up late into the first half, and this held until half time.

The boys knew that the Epping boys who had a star studded line up of 8 weekend representative players would come hard at the them to find the equaliser in the second half, and this they did. Our back four, made up of vice captains Riley Matthews, Tomas Bonato (Year 9), and Mitchell Wilson & Patrick Robinson (Year 8) held off attack after attack from the Epping Boys. With 15 minutes to go we were still up 1-0, and knew that we needed a second goal to ensure that we put ourselves into a good position to move through to the second round. Step Up George Medojevic (Year 8), with a 30 metre solo run down the right hand wing, before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of the goal. 2-0 St Leo’s (the underdog ahead of the superstars). We held this two goal advantage till the last two minutes when Epping were able to grab a goal back, which caused a nerve racking last minutes for the boys and more so the coach, and the one spectator that was there (Nicole Stack), for a hard fought 2-1.

Even though the team played so well together, the following boys had standout individual performances: Harvey Timms, Tomas Bonato, Riley Matthews, George Medojevic, Jacob Stewart, Daniel Mitchell, Mitchell Wilson, & Patrick Robinson

The boys now move to the second round of the competition where we face a home game against Marsden High School in the coming weeks.

I want to congratulate the boys on there performance on and off the pitch, and wish them luck for there next round match, and upcoming gala day.

Under 15 Bill Turner Cup Squad:

Harvey Timms, Riley Matthews, Tomas Bonato, George Medojevic, Luca Thompson, Jacob Stewart, Tino Knight, Nathan Cosgrove, Ryan Sweeney, Mitchell Wilson, Larsson Miletic, Patrick Robinson, Rowan Wood, Daniel Mitchell, Patrick McLoughlin, Antony Jakovcevic, Jeremy Jakovcevic, Lachlan Modde, Ryan Stack, William Grant.

BBSSSA Jnr and Inters BasketballOn Thursday the 7th of May the junior and intermediate boys basketball teams attended the annual Broken Bay Gala Day basketball competition held in Terrigal. The day was met with great excitement as some of the students were competing as a representative sportsmen for the school for the first time. The other students are coming back with great intentions to either show improvement from last year or to continue the great performances of the past.

The Junior Boys team showed great enthusiasm going into the first game which carried onto the rest of the day, however

were disappointed to lose in the dying seconds in the semi-final match. Unfortunately this means that they do not qualify for the combined catholic school competition, but have vowed to use the continuing training sessions to improve for next year.

The Intermediate Boys team were a continuous highlight throughout the day. The commitment that they have demonstrated during training two days a week, every week of every term, matched the intensity that they implemented in the way that they played. Long story short, they ended up being undefeated as well as winning the grand final 48-6. This win allows the team to compete in the combined catholic school competition.

The boys are to be congratulated with standout performances from Sam Park of year 7, Bailey Waldron of year 8, Raymond Takchi and the high flying Liam Quinlan of year 10.
