As an APICS instructor with over 15 years in front of students, her decades of operations, materials, cost accounting, and warehouse expertise means she has honed her presentations to match her audiences -whatever their part of the organization. As a consultant and educator, she constantly searches for solutions to these challenges.

Or should I say “over connected”? In this day and age we are connected everywhere we turn. From our smart phones

and smart television sets to our car dashboards and e-readers, there's no denying that we are living in the social era. Using tools like LinkedIn, and APICS Supply Chain Channel, and others we are able to tap into large professional networks to seek and share information that is beneficial to our jobs careers.

But are we too connected? Recently during a business trip as I was firing up my multiple phones within 60 seconds of landing and I stopped, thinking I had some type of OCD going on and there was nothing that important. Fortunately as I looked around me I was with the majority as others were already banging out emails, checking stocks, Peyton Manning’s new team, etc all before the crew could announce “now it’s safe to use portable electronics”.

Don’t get me wrong, there is no denying the benefits that technology can lend to productivity in the workplace and everyday lives but is it hindering us in other ways? Sometimes I wonder if it is driving some into having some type of attention deficit…(hold on, gotta check twitter)...disorder. I can remember when I first started traveling for work the presence of newspapers & conversation in airports, today not so much. It seems now that conversations thru tweets, texts, IM have replaced social interaction. Funny how sometimes you can get immediate response to a text but within seconds of that your call to that person goes unanswered. Next business meeting or dinner try having everyone put their phones in a sequestered area unreachable and see how everyone reacts.

If you have been waiting for the “right” time to start growing your Operations and Supply Chain acumen IT’s NOW. As our economy is stabilizing and demanding more productivity from fewer resources equip yourself with the toolset to be that key cog in the wheel. More productivity doesn’t have to entail more hours.

Don’t forget to sign up for our PDM, April 12th. This month we are cosponsoring the event with IndySHRM and the title is “Working and Playing Well with Others”. Sibyl Melin of Sundial Consulting will lead a seminar that will provide effective and fun approaches for working with others.

Don’t forget to join our social networks on Linked In (APICS-CIND), and Twitter (@apics_cind).

Keep the feedback coming….you can send your thoughts and concerns to [email protected], [email protected], or any other Board member of your choice (apics-cind.org/board).

Cheers

Purdue PlACes third Atstudent CAse ComPetitionOnce again, the Central Indiana Chapter of APICS was well-represented at the 17th Annual Great Lakes District Student Case Competition.

On February 24th, teams from across the Midwest and beyond gathered in the banquet hall of the Double Tree Suites and Conference center in Downers Grove, Illinois. The much-anticipated event has gained momentum over the past four years and saw a record number of teams (31) compete for the top spot. Of the 31 teams, six represented Central Indiana, including one team each from Ball State University, IUPUI, Purdue, and the University of Indianapolis, and two teams from Indiana State University.

The team from Purdue took home third place, trailing only Bowling Green State University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “The learning experience from networking with company executives and the all-nighter effort we put in were the key take-away points,” said Debdeep Roy, member of the third-place team from Purdue University.

This marks the fourth year in a row that at least one Central Indiana team has finished within the top three.

“Each year that I attend the case competition, I raise my expectations of what I expect to see from the presentations. And each year the overall performance continues to meet those expectations. Part of that credit goes to the professors and universities for their continued development of their operations and supply chain programs,” said Jason Wheeler, Director of the Great Lakes District of APICS. “I look forward to seeing these individuals putting their skills to work once they complete school over the next few years. I would encourage any company looking for some bright young talent to attend the competition next year.”

Congratulations to all the teams that participated in this year’s competition!
