The Project Y.E.S. program is offered at 15 of
the district’s elementary schools. A total of 32
teachers and school counselors serve as Project
Y.E.S. mentors.

MISSION The mission of our program is to help students feel
connected to their school and their community through
small group mentorships.
STUDENT SELECTION Students in fourth and fifth grade can be referred to
the Project Y.E.S. program by teachers, counselors,
administrators or parents. Parent/Guardian permission
is required for participation in the program.
MENTOR SELECTION Mentors are school-based educators who are selected
by principals with the following characteristics in
mind:
They like and respect children.
They are engaging and positive.
They are available to sustain a personal
commitment to Y.E.S. students and the program
requirements.
They will take initiative as the student’s advocate.
They are perceived by students and staff as a fair
and knowledgeable educator.

PROGRAM CRITERIA
Project Y.E.S. mentors will meet with students at least
once a week at a regularly scheduled meeting time.
Weekly meetings will last for approximately one
hour.
The Project Y.E.S. program is committed to academic
support. All Y.E.S. mentors provide academic
support to students during weekly meetings.
Mentors track student attendance and investigate
absences.
Mentors provide students with structured activities
that help them understand their role in their school,
neighborhood and community. Students will
participate in at least two community service events/
activities each school year.
Mentors will maintain regular contact with parents/
guardians. Parents/guardians will be invited to
participate in at least two family activities during the
school year.
