EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

Off-shore Flare Kits/EPIRBS/Safety Equipment

The Cocos Islands Community Resource Centre will once again investigate the possibility of purchasing flare kits for the Cocos Islands Community. We will also be able to provide EPIRBS and personal locator beacons.

Off-shore flare kits are a legal requirement when taking your boat out on the water.

As flares are now classified as a Class 1 explosive, it results in additional freight charges to send to Cocos Keeling Islands.

To obtain a semi-accurate cost to supply these flare kits to the community, we require your expression of interest in purchasing a kit/s.

Please email or phone our office no later than Friday 31st

August 2018. We will then investigate further to provide a cost.

If you require further information, please contact:

Why you are never too young to

go green

Young hearts are captivated by nature’s canvas, especially during the childhood years. Everything is new, exciting and wonderful. Everything is seen with new eyes and seems like a magic trick. Children have a special perspective on green spaces and quirky creatures that adults should admire, and

encourage.

Monkey See, Monkey Do: It might sound obvious, but children will always be much better imitators than they are students. Adults do it. Children see it. They learn to do it that way, too. The principle applies as much to table manners as to care for the environment and fostering

green habits.

Give them Responsibility: Give them responsibility suitable to their level. A three-year-old might drown your patio pot plants with love if left to it. But they will adore feeding the chickens, or folding and tearing down the cardboard

boxes for recycling.

Responsibility builds confidence and encourages participation. It develops commitment and demonstrates the trust parents are placing in them to do the right thing. There will be days where you need to step up and do it for them, but walking beside them with affirmation and praise is likely to produce better results in

the long run.

Quote of the Day

3 Little Pigs

This is a true story, proving how fascinating the mind of a six year old is. They think so

logically.

A teacher was reading the story of the Three Little Pigs to her

class.

She came to the part of the story where first pig was trying to gather the building materials

for his home.

She read. 'And so the pig went up to the man with the wheelbarrowfull of straw and said: 'Pardon me sir, but may I have some of thatstraw to build

my house?'

The teacher paused then asked the class: 'And what do you

think the man said?'

One little boy raised his hand and said very matter-of-factly... 'I think the man would have said - 'Well what d’ya know… A

talking pig!!!'

The teacher had to leave the

room.

green button once and the BBQ will ignite automatically. Each cooking cycle will take 8 minutes.

Product recalls - how worried should I be?

Have you checked if your car has potentially deadly Takata airbags? Over the past 12 months, 1.1 million of these faulty airbags have been

replaced (including on CKI). But despite a compulsory recall, 1.8 million affected vehicles are still on our roads.

In Western Australia there are 1,156 of the Takata alpha airbags that need to be replaced immediately, and a further 162,494 are also on the

recall list. Despite 24 reported deaths and more than 300 injuries from Takata airbags worldwide (including a death and injuries in Australia)

many consumers have been slow to respond to the recall notices. Do you need to contact your car’s manufacturer to arrange a replacement?

So, what should you do if you have a product that has been recalled, or suspect a product might be dangerous? Many suppliers voluntarily

initiate their own recalls after becoming aware that products are a safety risk and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission

(ACCC), or other regulators, can also arrange recalls of unsafe products.

Sometimes the ACCC recommends that the responsible Commonwealth Minister direct a compulsory recall in order to protect the public from an unsafe product. When this happens it is important to take notice straight away. Return the goods to the manufacturer so they can resolve

the issue and just as importantly, remove any harmful products from your home and stop using them if there is a safety risk.

Manufacturers or retailers can also directly inform you of the recall and the proposed remedy process. They might offer you a full refund, a suitable replacement product of the same value, a modification, or they might repair the product. As a starting point, check with the supplier

for details or view the recall at Product Safety Australia.

Under the Australian Consumer Law all consumer products supplied in Australia must be safe and meet consumer guarantees (acceptable quality, match the description given etc.). Banned products cannot be sold, and products or product-related services must comply with rele-

vant safety standards. If there is a risk that a product will or may cause injury, it must be recalled.

There is a mandatory requirement for businesses to report any death, serious injury or illness associated with a product to the ACCC within two days. The ACCC announce all product safety recalls and post updates (like the Takata recall) online at the Product Safety Australia web-

site www.productsafety.gov.au. or alternatively, follow @ACCCProdSafety on Twitter or like the ACCC Product Safety Facebook page.

So far in 2018 there have been 372 product recalls by the ACCC. This year’s top five categories of product recalls are:

Twitter atai „like‟ dihalaman ACCC Product Safety di Facebook.

How to Eat Healthy

Healthy eating is a pattern. It's about how you eat over days, weeks and even months. The simple steps in this guide show you how to eat a diet that's naturally low in salt, sugar and

saturated and trans fat.

F r u i t , v e g e t a b l e a n d wholegrains: These foods are high in fibre, vitamins and minerals. Eating plenty of veg e t ab l es , f ru i t s and wholegrains is consistently linked to people having

healthier hearts.

Healthy protein foods: Healthy eating patterns include a variety of healthy protein sources. Fish and seafood, eggs, lean meat and poultry, legumes, nuts and seeds - These foods are good sources of macro and micronutrients such as proteins, iron, zinc and vitamins, particularly the

vitamin B group.

Reduced-fat dairy: Eat reduced fat dairy foods such as unflavoured milk and yoghurt, and cheese. These are important sources of calcium, protein and other vitamins and

minerals.

Eating reduced fat dairy foods with no added sugar can help to reduce the risk of high blood

pressure and heart disease.

Healthy fat choices: Unsalted nuts and seeds contribute unsaturated fats (omega-3 and omega-6) to our diets. Nuts and linseed, chia or tahini, and avocados, the same goes for cooking oils made from plants or seeds like olive, canola, peanut, sunflower, soybean, rice bran, sesame and safflower, are types of fats help to reduce 'bad' cholesterol (LDL) and increase 'good' cholesterol (HDL), reducing the

risk of heart disease.

Herbs and spices instead of salt: Use herbs and spices to flavour foods instead of adding

salt when you're cooking.

Australians consume around 9 grams of salt per day on average. We recommend you consume less than 5 grams a day. A diet high in salt increases your r isk of hypertension and heart disease. A healthy eating pattern, based on the previous four principles, will be naturally

lower in salt.
