Buying the right bed
FOR many of us the bedroomis our favourite room in thehouse – a private sanctuarywhere we rest and relax.
But despite the fact that wespend nearly a third of our yearunder the sheets – on average106 days a year in bed – it does-n’t necessarily mean that we’regetting adequate rest.
The majority of us wait far toolong before replacing a mattress– robbing us of many sweetdreams.
Annie Deakin, editor of onlineinteriors shopping site mydecosaid: “Frankly, if you can’tremember the last time you hada good night’s sleep, it could wellbe your rickety old bed – and notyour stressful lifestyle – that’s toblame.”
It seems a seven year itch does-n’t just apply to marriages – italso applies to mattresses,because that’s around the righttime to buy new one.
Deakin said: “Always opt for thelargest bed you can, makingsure, of course, it fits your room.
“You’ll never regret it as it you’llhave enough room to spread outand be comfortable.”
Chrissie Rucker, founder of TheWhite Company believes it’salso essential to consider howthe bed fits your decor.
She said: “A bed’s style domi-nates a room, so think carefullyabout the style you prefer. Butdon’t feel limited by your home’sstyle.
Vintage beds can work brilliant-ly in a contemporary setting,while sleek modern beds,dressed up, can also fit into themost traditional scheme.”
A bed should last you at least 10years so it’s wise to choose aclassic design that can easily beupdated with bed linen andaccessories.
Divans have a solid base, eithersprung for maximum comfort orwith a platform top.
This works in tandem with a
mattress and should not bebought on its own.
Rucker said: “A high qualitydivan will have more give andfeel more luxurious than a mat-tress on a slatted base and canaccommodate hidden storagedrawers or a pull-out bed.”
A bedstead consists of a frame,usually wooden or metal, with aslatted base.
Rucker said: “As the base israised off the floor it makes foreasy cleaning.
“It can give a lighter, airier feelto a bedroom, but you won’t beable to update the bed by simplychanging the headboard orvalance.”

A mattress must be supportive,but that doesn’t mean it has tobe hard.
Firm mattresses are actuallyfor heavy people – the heavierthe person, the firmer the
springs need to be. Cooper said:“A mattress that’s correct allowsyour hips to sink in, givingeffective support to your lowerback. It’s not enough for yourlower back to just touch themattress surface.
“Don’t be frightened of feelingcomfortable, even though thefeeling may be unfamiliar to youif previously you’ve wronglytaken the ‘hard bed is good foryou’ approach.”
A bed should be at least sixinches (10cm) longer than the
person lying on it. If possible,avoid mattresses that increasebody heat.
The body’s temperature needsto cool to 28 degrees duringdeep sleep, otherwise sleepquality may be affected.
Foam, latex and memory foamoffer superb support but tend tobe warmer.
Cooper says beds with naturalfillings such as cotton, wool orhorse hair are preferable as theyallow ventilation and cope withbody moisture effectively.
