27 Years of Jump rope for Heart Submitted By: Fonda Rosenbaum – Grant Recipient

Rural Hall Elementary, Rural Hall, NC

Reflecting on 35 years of teacher and 27 years of coordinating Jump Rope For Heart at Rural Hall Elementary, I became very aware of how much these affected me

personally and professionally. During a sermon at my church recently, my minister was talking about “the importance of the works of our hearts and our hands.” Immediately, my priceless memories from Jump Rope For Heart came to mind. There are the handprints on the wall representing the children that are helping others by participating in Jump Rope For Heart. There are pink hearts that name who the children are dedicating their jumping to. I think of the jump ropes in the children’s hands as they learn and proudly perform new jumping skills. They’re always so enthusiastic and eager to say the heart pledge for their teachers. A tradition that we look forward to at the conclusion of our event is the formation of a huge heart with the handprints of all the children that participated. We use the center of this heart to announce our total contribution to the American Heart Association.

I am so grateful to the Joint Projects for making this grant available and that my AHA representative talked to me into applying. I was so thrilled to receive the JRFH/HFH Grant this year to go to my first ever AAHPERD National Convention in Baltimore, MD. I enjoyed meeting and sharing ideas with other grant winners at the Award Ceremony and dinner. Attending motivational sessions and collecting new ideas and equipment for my curriculum were great! I bought two surprises for the kids to enjoy in P.E. at a big discount. Bilingual Skillastics Fitness game and Cal Ripkin’s Baseball Game. The students and teachers from Rural Hall Elementary would like to thank the Joint Projects for the 2006-2007 AAHPERD JRFH/HFH Grant. The US Games Certificate for $1200 was used to purchase equipment to make grade level sets to motivate the children to become even more physically active and challenged by a variety of activities.

I would like to encourage everyone to apply for the JRFH/HFH Grant. Don’t wait as long as I did. If you have applied, but haven’t been a recipient, just try again! It is such a wonderful opportunity for you and for the children you teach in physical education! I promise it will give you a great feeling you’ll never forget!

Every time I wear my charm bracelet with a gold heart engraved 2007 AAHPERD Convention, I smile and get a warm feeling in my heart!Y

Story continued from page 1

First, I want to thank the Joint Projects Committee, AAHPERD and Jump Rope For

Heart for selecting me to be one of the 2007 JRFH/HFH Grant recipients! It was certainly an honor! Thanks to them for making available such a wonderful opportunity. JRFH has been a part of my physical education program for 18 years and this grant is another way in which they add to my physical education program.

With the grant award, my 2007 annual dues for AAHPERD were paid, the registration and travel expenses were paid for me to attend the AAHPERD National Convention in Baltimore, I had access to ideas from effective educators around the country, additional equipment was purchased for my school, and my students’ fitness will improve. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing new ideas for fitness, skill development and health. There was such a variety of sessions offered! I had a difficult time choosing just one session each time; usually there were more than two workshops in which I was particularly interested that were offered at the same time. I brought back more than a few ideas and my students are enjoying them already. I also enjoyed hearing the keynote speaker, Dr. Seffrin, from the

American Cancer Society. I believe he was an encouragement for all the physical educators who heard him. He conveyed our importance in educating our nation so as to squelch our advancing health crisis.

Baltimore is a lovely city and showed off itself. Everything was within walking distance: hotel, food, convention site, entertainment and tourist sights. I loved that the conference included a 6:30 a.m. walking tour of Baltimore – sight-seeing, fun, and fitness all in one!

I have also received the equipment I ordered to help my students be more physically fit. I am introducing my students to pedometers! Another neat bonus was finding a workshop at the convention on using pedometers and integrating lessons. I will be adding math facts with their fitness lessons.

I appreciate the opportunity to grow as a physical educator: membership in our national alliance, attending our AAHPERD convention, meeting peer teachers, and receiving funds for additional equipment. I encourage others to take the time and make the effort of writing for their grant this next year.Y

AAHPHERD Staff Jump Ropes For Heart

By: Jennifer Jones

W hen I applied for the position of Director of Marketing for the American Alliance of

Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) last Winter, I recognized the Jump Rope For Heart logo on the AAHPERD website. My oldest son had participated in the program the year before, and I was excited to pursue a job with an organization that co-sponsored such a great event.

Now I have been at AAHPERD for 6 months, and my son again participated in Jump Rope For Heart this spring, this time raising more than $1000, the most in his school—Horizon Elementary in Potomac Falls, Virginia. Horizon is lucky to have a Physical Education Teacher who takes participation in Jump Rope For Heart seriously—She has the kids write up a few words about who they are jumping for and posts them in the school hallway, she honors the kids who raise the most money, and she runs a well-organized event. The event could even be more successful if more parents, the PTA, and community businesses got involved in supporting the kids.

To me, what better l esson i s the r e than encouraging our kids to helps others? To help them develop a sense of responsib i l i t y toward a greater good and to see beyond themselves? Participation in Jump Rope Fo r Hea r t teaches compassion, rewards dedication, and gives children a sense that they can make a difference—

All in a fun environment that encourages better health through fitness. More parents, teachers,

and community leaders need to support the annual Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart events.

I know that you, the PE Teacher, can’t do it alone. Recruit a willing parent to encourage participation in or support of the event. Have parents send e-mails out to other parents to get more kids to participate or to support another child with a donation. Make friends with your PTA leaders, and have a PTA member or parent speak at a meeting about the importance of volunteering time or encouraging school-wide and community-wide participation in the event. You can also share stories from The Pulse in your school newspaper, newsletter, or website to help generate interest in Jump Rope For Heart or Hoops For Heart.

Spread the word about Jump Rope For Heart—And I guarantee you’ll get more participation, support, and appreciation for what you do to teach kids the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle.Y

Introducing a heartfelt opportunity for your school’s faculty and staff to partner with your

students in the rewarding fundraising efforts associated with your school’s Jump Rope/Hoops For Heart program...we bring you Teachers With Heart!

The American Heart Association is proud to offer the opportunity for everyone in your school to participate in the fundraising efforts associated with Jump Rope For Heart and Hoops For Heart. These fundraising programs provide an opportunity to educate youth and adults about living a heart-healthy lifestyle. As the Jump Rope and/or Hoops For Heart event coordinator at your school, you have a unique opportunity to engage your colleagues and school staff with the Jump Rope and/or Hoops For Heart program you have currently planned for your students, by participating in Teachers With Heart. Engaging your faculty and staff in addition to your students will help make your event a fun school wide community event! Funds raised by your school staff will also increase the total funds raised by your school which will help you earn a larger U.S. Games Gift Certificate.

To make it easier, the Teachers With Heart materials will already be included in your Jump Rope/Hoops For Heart Event Kit. These materials will include customized Teachers With Heart collection envelopes, banking forms, thank-you gift marketing materials, and much more! There is also a special Teachers With Heart thank-you gift structure that has been developed especially for the faculty & staff who raise funds. All classroom teachers, principals, administrative staff, cafeteria staff, etc. are encouraged to participate. For more information, please contact your local American Heart Association Representative.Y

The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of students’ attitudes and

motivation toward physical education with an ultimate goal of learning how to design class environments and activities that will promote the adoption of active life styles. The investigators examined the relationships between self-reported levels of physical activity, measures of health related fitness, attitudes toward physical education, perceived motivational climate, and level of activity in physical education classes. Surveys, field-based fitness tests, and pedometers were utilized to gather information from students.

Self-repor ted level of physical activity and the number of steps taken during a

physical education class displayed a strong positive correlation with health-related fitness assessments. Children who repor ted higher levels of physical activity as well as those who took more steps during their physical education class had a higher cardiovascular fitness level. Those individuals also had a lower body mass index and lower percent body fat, which was estimated by skinfold tests. Learning climates that emphasized personal improvement and mastering tasks were associated with positive

attitudes toward physical education and physical activity, higher levels of perceived competence, and higher levels of motivation to be physically active. Current levels of physical activity and positive attitudes were directly related to intentions to engage in physical activity in the future.

The major findings of the study suppor t several implications for teachers. Children

who are currently engaged in physical activity perform better on measures of health related fitness which indicates that they intend to be active in the future. Positive attitudes toward physical education increase the likelihood that children will be actively engaged in physical activity. Positive attitudes are fostered in physical education classes where teachers emphasize learning and improvement rather than on winning games or outperforming other students. Creating motivational class climates in which students can be successful while engaging in physical activity is important, especially for students who are sedentary. In conclusion, it is important to select tasks and activities that students find to be useful and enjoyable in order to foster positive attitudes and increase the likelihood that children will choose to be active.Y
