We need every child in school to be an Attendance

Superhero

We believe that good school attendance is essential if pupils are to be able to take advantage of the opportunities available

to them, which will enable them to participate fully in the world. We do everything we can to provide children with a first

rate education, but they can only benefit fully from it if they are here. In line with current government advice, we do

not authorise any term time holiday leave. If you are experiencing difficulties, it makes a BIG difference if you act

quickly, before bad habits form, or issues really take hold. We are here to help and support so please do call the Admin

Office, to arrange a mutually convenient time to talk.

Improving attendance in school is as important as improving your child’s learning. If they are not in school then they are

not learning.

We appreciate that children cannot help being sick. Sometimes they have an illness that will require time off school and

a visit to a doctor.

Taking regular one or two days off soon adds up. Sometimes our children have coughs or colds. They may not feel like

their normal self but they are probably well enough for school. Children have to learn for adult life that we need to build

our resilience to cope. If as adult’s we regularly took time off work for a cough or cold, we wouldn’t have a job. As parents

we are asking you to stop and think before you allow your child to stay off school.

Are they well enough to attend school?

Is your child’s attendance already a concern?

Would it help if you dropped off paracetamol or medication for them during the school day? If so just sign the

appropriate form in school.

Is there anything worrying your child at school or home?

Who could you speak to? Class teacher Headteacher/ Deputy Headteacher Family Inclusion Manager – Jane Collin

Attendance Admin Officer – Sarah Woodburn

Good Time Keeping Means….

....making sure your child is at school and ready to learn, before registration is over. Our registration

takes place between 8.40 am and 8.50 am.

Did you know? – being 15 minutes late each day is the same as missing two weeks of school

When pupils arrive late, they miss out on essential instructions given at the beginning of the lesson. This can

significantly reduce achievement, regardless of academic ability. Children may also feel awkward arriving to the

classroom when everyone else is settled. Furthermore, when one pupil arrives late, it disrupts the entire class and the

teacher. Therefore, everyone’s education is compromised.

Lessons in Reception classes, Key Stage 1 and 2 start at 8.50am. Teachers arrive in the playground at 8.40am and take

their class into school at around 8.45am so that pupils are in class and ready to be registered for 8.50am. Therefore,

any child who arrives in class after 8.50am may well be registered as Late ('L' code in the register).

The registers are legally closed by the office 20 minutes after the start of the school day. This means that is any child

who arrives late after the Register is closed will be registered as an unauthorised absence ('U' code in the register).

This counts as half a day’s absence.

If your child is going to be late due to an urgent medical appointment please ensure that the office is informed and have

seen proof of the medical appointment either before or after they have attended.

The only way to ensure that your child is not marked as late in the register is for them to be in their class line for when

the teacher arrives to collect their class at 8.40am.

If your child arrives late on several occasions, you will be asked to attend a meeting with the school's attendance

officer (Mrs Sarah Woodburn) or other senior member of staff to explain the reasons for your child's lateness. The

school will work with you in finding solutions if there are genuine difficulties. However, if lateness persists, you will be

invited to a further meeting with the local authority's educational welfare officer (EWO) and the persistent lateness

may well lead to the issue of a fixed penalty notice. Please arrive at school every day at 8.40am.

Sports Report Yarmouth

Tuesday June 11th

On Tuesday afternoon travelled to Arreton cricket club, to play Primary School sporting giant Newchurch in

the quarter final of the girls cricket cup. Olivia won the toss and Yarmouth batted first. Amazingly none of

our team were out and we set a good total of 241 for Newchurch to chase. It started well, Tawnie getting a

run out first ball, all the girls bowled well, putting Newchurch under pressure, two further run outs followed,

one from Ocean and a brilliant throw from Olivia. It remained tight right to the end, Sky bowling the last

over really well, and a great catch from Tawnie meant we were still in with a chance. Unfortunately though,

Newchurch finished their innings on 245. This meant we lost by just 4 runs, a great effort against a very

good opponent.

Team. Sky, Ocean, Bella, Issy, Tawnie, Jamie, Olivia, Maia
