I’m disappointed that Ms. Furguglietto decided to report on this story with an implication that video gaming was to blame for what happened. The actions of Miss Robinson were not based on actions portrayed or encouraged by the game in question, nor was the game at any point cited as the inspiration for her delinquency her relationship with an individual she met online is what drove her to take the actions she did. Using language like “extremely violent,” “rampant carnage,” “heinous acts of destruction,” and “malicious killing”

serves no purpose but to provide shocking imagery unrelated to the story in question and bias the reader against the act of video gaming a slap in the face to objective reporting. At no point does the ABC article cited several times throughout this report provide any association between the content of the game and the actions of Miss Robinson, save for a passing reference to her parents’ irresponsibility in allowing a thirteenyearold to play an Mrated game, as well as interact online, without supervision. Their irresponsibility, in my opinion, has

more cause to be considered for the actions that transpired than any video game does. Making these sorts of baseless associations between video gaming and engaging in delinquent behavior does nothing but continue to stigmatize a hobby %0$3+2$4.)"$5%%6$2#+7.08$+07$'9:$watching. It is seven o’clock on a Satur

day night in Dunn Theatre. I peer

at a stage full of instruments but

empty of musicians when sud

denly, a man walks on stage. Dan

Saulpaugh swings his guitar strap

over his shoulder and begins an

unrecognizable riff. Just as this

!"#$%&'("$)(*)+,-./)*0'1)&)/"#$20,)boy comes strutting out and settles

himself behind the drum set. Paul

Pearl accompanies the guitar with a

solid beat of snare, tom and bass.

Next comes the bassist, walking a

where he entered, and there ap

pears the trombonist. Tyler Giroux

perfectly joins in with his fellow

players while the backup vocalists,

Andrea Palma and D’Nasya Jordan,

enter from the opposing side. By

now, the groove is soundly set, and

the musicians and their listeners all

seem to be enjoying what they hear.

But something’s missing – or

50,3&5*1) -",0) *506(+6&../1) *"-0one. In textbook “last but certainly

not least” technique, Kyle Tupper

(KT) comes strutting out, head

nodding and beatclapping in ap

proval of the jam session going on

around him. While the audience is

applauding his arrival, he joins his

band mates as they band immedi

sing is the epitome of KT sound: a

slow ballad starts with Kyle’s all

encompassing vocals before a fade

from a bellowing note turns into a

blasts of a hard, fast riff. “All You

Need” features the guitar and trom

bone solo in jazzy fashion while the

backup vocalists dance and snap in

full support, all the while voicing

the message of Kyle’s entire enter

tainment philosophy:

“I want [the audience] to experi

ence how music affects all of us,”

says the front man, “and how it’s

a very special thing. People forget

music can affect your mood and

your life. I want people to leave my

shows feeling good, feeling enter

tained, feeling the music having an

effect on them. The audience has a

big effect on me; if they don’t feel

good, I don’t feel good.”

Kyle Tupper is a true showman.

Arriving in the early afternoon to

prepare for his premiere on stage

later in the evening, KT appeared

to have as much fun setting up

the stage as he did performing on

to have the piano front and center,

looking straight ahead, completely

and comfortably engaging with his

This appreciation and love of

his listeners followed through with

just how to belt out and how to hold

back the way Tyler knows when to

play around with pitch and style and

when to let a haunting note hang in

the air. The two were a perfect pair

for such an enchanting piece.

But this coupling did not last

long, as they invited the rest of the

band to rejoin them on stage once

more. The remainder of the set, all

originals composed by KT, embod

ied a bulk of talent: the drums start

up as if they never stopped, the bass

stays at its heels with catchy, upbeat

foundation, the guitar riffs and roars

through a series of solos, the brass

the vocalists chant through chorus

lines like heartfelt sirens, and Kyle

tops it all off with pounding piano

genuine smile.

The last time SUNY Potsdam

had the pleasure of a performance

by The KT Experience was Octo

ber 1, 2011 – almost one year to

the very day. Formerly a student

of the Crane School of Music for

their song “Blister in the Sun,”

but once people move past that

6&'63/) +,*') ',&6<) '30/) ;(..) +$%)the entire album is a spectacularly

wellassembled progressive rock

album. To be honest any listener

must step out from their green day

norm to love this recording, but

trust me it is well worth it in the

end if you can just stick with it.

After the album’s initial re

lease in 1983 the band, based out

of Milwaukee, blew up and re

ceived nearly unanimous positive

reviews from prominent music

reviewers such as Rolling Stone

magazine. The Violent Femmes

were truly the voice of heartbreak

in the 80’s, but they quickly lost

popularity after a series of below

par albums and band feuds. De

spite missteps towards the end of

'30(,)0F(*'0$60)'30(,)+,*')&.4#-)(*)simply too perfect to disregard.

The album plays out as an an

gry rant of a heartbroken teenager

whose wounds are still tender

from a nasty separation. Even

though a ballad of teen angst may

not seem appealing to most, the

lyrical genius of this singer will

have any audience tapping their

foot and snickering in no time.

Gordon Gano (lead singer and

lyricist) takes an overused topic

and changes it up in a way that

is always interesting; keeping his

audience guessing what witty ex

periences he might share next.

A highlight of the band’s mu

sic, besides the crafty lyrics, is the

use of an acoustic bass throughout

the album and the scattered use of

numerous other unconventional

sounds. The use of these strange

sounds reinforce the albums main

overlaying theme of utter chaos

that has taken the narrator to hell

and back for a girl. With that said,

the listeners don’t have to be bit

ter prepubescent children to un

derstand and enjoy this kickass

record regardless of gender or

past heartbreak.

The bands instrumentals may

be out of the norm for contempo

rary music, but that doesn’t mean

that it sounds the least bit bizarre.

The way they use their skills com

pliment the tone of the album and

the end result is something that

Let me start out by saying that

“Looper” is one hell of a mind

best I can without giving away any

If you’ve seen the Roxy, you

know it contains that small town

for the smaller theater experience

to work for it. When I went there

for this review I was greeted in a

rather neighborly manner and felt

more welcomed here then my the

ater back home. The ticket prices

are cheaper than I used to also: two

dollars less than the chain I usually

go to.

Before the movie I decided to

go to the bathroom, which was in

desperate need of maintenance.

Next to the website navigation it

was by far the most unappealing

part of the experience. It wasn’t all

that gross or anything, I’ve been

in much worse bathrooms, it’s just

that nothing in there worked. One

of the toilets was out of order with

a sweatshirt stuffed in it, the tiles

were all stained giving the room a

grimier feel, the sinks were missing

their faucet handles, and instead of

a mirror you get an outdated movie

poster to investigate as you wash

your hands. Movies are common

date locations and that’s the one

time in your life you want to look

your best. “Sorry babe, I didn’t

know my shirt wasn’t tucked in,

It has been impossible to turn

on a television without seeing

a commercial for the newly re

leased “Pitch Perfect.” Though

this sort of overexposure often

ends in disappointment, this time

the movie exceeds the hype.

The story follows Beca, (Al

exandra Kendricks) a fresh

man at Barden College who

dreams of being a DJ in Los

Angeles. Upon her arrival at

Barden she encounters the

“Barden Bellas,” the female A

Capella group on campus. Once

at the top of the social pyramid,

the group is now facing trouble

getting new members when Au

brey (Anna Camp), the soloist at

members Beca decides to join, as

her father promised to pay for her

pus.

Aubrey clashes with most of

the new members, especially

Beca, as they resist the old boring

set list that the Bellas have been

using for the past 20 years, which

ends up in hilarious disaster at ev

ery turn.

The movie has the musical

ity of “Glee” and the humor of

“Mean Girls,” but manages to

keep its individuality. The laughs

Nathan Rubadou, our very own

That game was a heated battle as it is every time these teams meet. The second time was in FC Scorgasm favor ending in a 32 score. There were six other teams, one

was the fresh, animated and fun loving Team FLASH, also known as Team Supreme. Team E.O.T.H. It’s not a word nor do I know what it stands for, but as confusing as their name was, there was no confusion when it came to their skill, determination and grit. The Anthro Club, another one of the seven, scored a beautiful goal from outside 18yards to open up their season. They were a team that didn’t show up often but when they did they were fun to watch. Flash and E.O.T.H runs ended in the group stages, while Free Agents, Stoners FC, FC Scorgasm, Boss, Team DYNASTY and The Anthro Club made it to the quarters. One of my favorite clubs to

great and had lots of fun. There were times of heated arguments, joy and despair all of which is expected when you have passion mixed with a desire to win. Next up in Intramural sports is basketball

and indoor soccer, so if you have a team, or if you don’t come out and play, make some new friends and enjoy yourself. You can sign up for different sports on the Intramural homepage over at PotsdamBears.com. So see what sport you want to be apart of, sign up, and come and have some fun.

Hey … you there. Yeah. You. Come here. I want to tell you something. No. Not my book. You already know about that. It’s another thing. A crazy theory I have. Actually, it’s not so crazy, it’s something happening in newspapers across America. Basically, if it can be found on the Internet, there’s really not much of a point of having it in the newspaper. I don’t know if I totally buy into that, but maybe there’s some truth to it? You’re going to have to let me know. Because here’s what we’re going to do with this little sports section here. For years, and I can vouch for

with The Racquette in 2004 I realize this was before most of you were born, but hang with me here. I’m building to something the sports section has always kind of been a dumping ground for sports information, which isn’t a bad thing on its own, but that would usually be wrapped with MAYBE, MAYBE one or two articles written by actual staff writers about local sporting events. And those events would almost always be hockey and basketball. If you were playing on one of the many awesome women’s teams, you were ignored. And if you played on the golf team? Forget it. It’s like you’re not really a team at all … which you’re kind :3%-:*/%98*%&3%1:8%(#-*%*:%,>)*%0"%

It’s not a secret. This is Potsdam. What else is there to do but be mad at your betters? I’m totally kidding! Ok. Kind of. But ... now we’re getting off track. So. Sports section. Kind of a

bummer throughout its history, huh? I’d like to change that. With

science! What? Oh. Sorry. Can’t use science. This is a state school and we might offend someone. We can use actual stories though, from the athletes themselves. Because how cool would that be? We can actually hear them talk about the events in a cool and personal way that you can’t get … yup. On the Internet. See what I did there? You like it, right? And the best part? Every sport and every athletic event gets covered in equally and in a 38-% (#1% 1:8% $#-J*% ,-.% #-1()"5"%else. But we’re not going to let the student athletes have all the fun.
