most interesting presidential candidate we will ever meet. The !"#$%&'#()*+ ,&-*.*&/%+ &.01+ /(+ 2))+the shoes of current Czech president Vaclav Klaus, and he certainly will do so in a distinctive manner. Before deciding to venture off into the world of politics, Vladimir opted for a wide range of careers – a drama professor at a renowned Czech university, a skilled painter, and an opera composer. Franz was also granted a doctorate degree from law school, but deferred to a career in the arts due to the Czech Republic’s involvement with the former communist regime. Perhaps the most enthralling de

tail about Franz’s character is that he loves getting inked. I’m not alluding to the “ink” that’s associated with his increasing press coverage, but the ink that the hopeful politi

cian has covering 90% of his body. According to ABC News, if Franz does in fact win the Czech Republic’s presidential election, he will make the presidential hall of fame &1+ /3%+ 42'1/+ 3%&*+ (5+ 1/&/%+ 6./3+ &+fully tattooed head.”Vladimir’s intimidating ap

His goal is to collect the 50,000 signatures he needs to formally declare his candidacy. The politician’s startling image

is contrasted by his surprisingly

modest political ideals. Franz holds a moderate position in politics, and the foundations of his appeal as president lie in “promoting tolerance, human rights, democracy, and encouraging the search for alternative energy sources.” He told the Czech newspaper, titled ‘Prague Post’: “Politics, politicians and the state have become alienated from the people. Citizens are frustrated, and I fear radicalization.” Franz believes in maintaining Czech relations with the European Union, but has defended regulations that seek to balance equal policies over bigger and smaller nations. The 16 Amish individuals were found guilty of carrying out the “beard attacks” that left Amish in the area in distress and fear in the fall of 2011. These socalled “beard attacks,” which also involved cutting off women’s hair, were carried out by his followers on nine occa

sions on what Mullet deemed to be his enemies. Even though Mullet himself was not involved directly in the attacks, prosecutors claimed that he was the mastermind behind the assaults and ordered them to be carried (8/+.-+&+1?%,.2,+0&--%'=The victims that Mullet had targeted had

with instruments intended for horses. The trial itself, and the fact that the Amish

had law enforcement involved, is very unusual to begin with. Amish generally do not get involved with courts and police, preferring to handle their disputes among themselves. However, the nature of the assaults moved them to action. Normally Mullet and his followers would

be faced with trespassing, assault, and other charges. But they were charged with conspiracy and hate crimes due to the context of the attacks and the violence in the way they committed these assaults. To the Amish, hav

Shortstop player Yunel Escobar, of the Toronto Blue Jays, has been suspended for three games for displaying a gay slur on his eye black. The money that Escobar would have been paid for playing these three games is estimated to be around $83,000. roughly translates to “you are a faggot” in English. When questioned about what exactly the phrase meant and why he used it, Escobar was surprisingly vague and said

it was not meant as a gay slur, more as a joke among the Latino community. Escobar is Cuban, and he insisted when questioned that the phrase was not to offend anyone, referring to several people he knew that were gay. However, the team released a statement during the announcement of suspension declaring that they still had no tolerance for discriminatory actions. Escobar did accept and agree with the suspension and expressed embarrassment. Even though the incident itself happened

on Saturday, no one noticed the homophobic slur until Monday, when a fan who had taken pictures uploaded them to Flickr. The photographs then went viral, catching the attention of the team managers. The manager John Farrell said that the slur went unnoticed because Escobar was known for writing messages on his eye black. He was known by the team to write motivational and inspirational messages, nothing harmful or insulting. For this reason, it came as a surprise when Escobar walked onto home plate with a slur instead of motivation written under his eyes.

am, walking across campus, doing what sad, attentionhungry English majors do, that is to say, combing the grass for cigarette butts to eat because, let’s face it, minimum wage and outrageous student loans don’t buy groceries like they used to, and while college feeds the mind, it leaves the body hungry and jonesing for a smoke. But I digress. I’m leaving Timmerman, heading to the Crumb Library, eyes glued to the pavement, until I’m nearly stuck by a hooligan on a skateboard. “Damn kids and their rebellious conveyances!”, I rave to myself. Potsdam invaded by unimaginative horses

Notice how I didn’t call you an idiot? That sure was nice of me. It’s almost as if I wanted to open a discourse about something I disagree with in a civil and respectful manner. I’m referring of course to your recent editorial piece about “idiots on skateboards.” Believe it or not, I cannot skateboard. I’m sure you’re happy to hear this, because it means I won’t be giving you dirty looks or bloody noses. I may not be able to look “cool” in “wool parkas or khakis and converse,” but at least I’m not a “total douche.”I’d now like to address some of

the generalizations and embellishments you printed recently. First of all, “technically”, skateboards

are not vehicles. They cannot be legally driven or ridden on the street, like a bike or car. They are, however, like you said, “fast, convenient, easily portable, and can save a lot %&$ ).5#?@$A"#0$ B$ '7/)$ 7#+2$ )"+)1$ B$thought those things were all good, but I kept reading and learned the truth. Second, I may not know much about physics, but I do know that it would be almost entirely impossible to “cruise down a crowded sidewalk at 40 miles an hour” on any type of board. The wheels would probably get wobbly and the person would fall off. However, I’m not as good as you are at judging speed by “the wind of passage,” so I guess I’ll never know. Third, your friend

witnessed someone kick a skateboard down a hill “where it proceeded to hit the legs of a girl at the bottom.” Well, I wasn’t there, but I’m assuming that the board kicker wanted his or her board back, and during its retrieval, apologized for the heinous crime, because that’s what civil people do. Perhaps the girl at the bottom of the hill should have been “aware of other people in existence,” and moved a few steps out of the way to avoid what could have been a crippling injury. I hope she’s O.K now though. In closing, I don’t think that ecstasy makes you veer wildly around, and I think you just chose a drug that you thought was bad to get your point across.

I also don’t think you should hate people you don’t know, especially not forever, and especially not after you say that you’re O.K. with those people. Finally, please don’t push people off their boards in unjusti'#2$7+6#1$ )"+);/$C-/)$7#+334$0%)$)"+)$nice, and you wouldn’t be helping anything. You’d probably be actually harming someone severely, seeing as they all go forty miles an hour. But I do see your point, having wind blow up against your face is just the absolute worst.

ANONYMOUS NONSKATEBOARDER

Editorial response: An open letter to Emily Beatty

Hi, Anonymous Nonskateboarder. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my opinion.Let’s break your response down.

You saw me refer to a group of abstracts as “idiots” and got upset, because “idiot” is a strong term about someone’s supposed intelligence, so that makes it bad. I guess it was rude of me, but I don’t understand why my level of rudeness is considered too strong by you when it’s in reaction to extreme rudeness by people who can’t be bothered to operate skateboards like other people exist on the sidewalk.Skateboards aren’t vehicles?

A#8/)#7;/$2#'0.).%0$%&$+$D#".(3#$+/$it applies here is “a means of carrying or transporting something”, so okay, I will give you that skateboards aren’t considered a “vehicle” in the eyes of the law, but they have wheels and they transport stuff, and they go fast, so “techinically”, one can describe them as a “vehicle” and not be wrong. Basically, I believe that if you are using something that is capable of going faster than a person who is walking, then you should operate it like a responsible person. Doesn’t mat

ter what it is, wheelchairs, scooters, skateboards, cars, if you don’t use it with consideration of other people, you’re gonna hurt someone. And yes, I did praise skate

boards as “fast, convienient, easily portable, and can save a lot of time”, because I believe that’s an accurate description of them. I don’t really see how my statement that people who are inconsiderate on skateboards are idiots changes that opinion, because I wasn’t referring to “idiot skateboards”. Kind of like, I’m okay with guns, because they have practical uses and can do a lot of different things. But people who are idiots with guns suck and I do not like them, because they use guns wrong, and it usually means someone’s gonna have a bad time. Same goes for skateboards.Yeah, I know its probably not

possible for someone to go down a sidewalk on a skateboard at forty miles an hour, but I was employing hyperbole for the sake of the argument. Skateboards can go pretty fast compared to someone walking. Things that go fast hurt if they run into people. That was pretty much the bottom line of that particular

argument, and the fact that people can’t go 40 miles an hour on a skateboard doesn’t change the fact that someone going 10 to 15 miles on a skateboard would still really hurt if they ran into you.Oh man, let’s get to my favor

ite part where you talk about how its the girl’s fault she got hit by a skateboard because she “should have been aware of other people’s existance” and magically known that the person behind her was going to kick their skateboard down a hill and hit her, because its not like the skateboard owner should have been aware of what they were doing or anything, maybe given the person a warning that, hey, I just kicked something at you, look out? Nah, totally that girl’s fault she got hit. And even if the owner of the skateboard apologized, which I’m sure they did, I was using the incident to illustrate a wider pattern of certain people on skateboards not being considerate to other people, I.E, trying to do tricks, maybe not even fancy ones, that could hurt people nearby if they mess up.Ecstasy would probably make

you do some pretty weird things

on a skateboard, but you got me, I was using it as more hyperbole. I’m assuming most skateboarders on campus don’t drop E and then crazily skateboard into crowds, they 2%$)"+)$C-/)$'0#$9.)"%-)$27-6/?E02$'0+3341$C-/)$)%$(3#+7$)"#$+.7F$I

was not referring to all skateboarders or skateboards in my opinion.Instead I was referring, exclusively, to those people who act obnoxious and with no consideration to other people, on skateboards. In closing, I don’t actually push

people off skateboards because I do have a concious, but I do have the right to dislike people who are rude and inconsiderate on skateboards and almost hit me, and yeah, I can dislike them forever if they keep doing it. (You’re right, “hate” is a strong word, and since I don’t have energy to waste on actually “hating” idiots on skateboards, I’ll tone it down to a “dislike”.)

I look for the pens in the plastic shelves they gave me for Christmas, and the notebook with a golden heart on the front cover they handed me the day after a forgotten birthday. Write me down, take note of me. It calls me, the voice, I feel embraced in warmth when it is around. Calming me with division away from reality, entering a dreamy state of mind. “Why am I even here? them to yell, to drink.” I lay down on the bed and begin to scribble down words to forget the lyrics of everyday life. Writ-(8"@<"0,("'/<./@2")**-(8"@<"/&$+",-./"-@$8&1"04"/$55-(&11"and life. all those memories, all the pain. Write...write it all out.

I scribble faster to catch up to the thoughts, the pen not moving fast enough for me. Pressing the pen down harder into the paper, engraving it, the pen cries out for mercy. It tries to keep up, pushing through its pain and the force I put on it. Wincing at every cross of the T and dot of the I. Then something happens, something very terrible happens, the ink...it stops coming out. My face, mood, and body changes from wonderment to an intensity of destruction. The voice takes control, like it was waiting for this moment. It must die, give the pen what it deserves. I follow the demands and take the pen in both hands and slowly bend it to the breaking point, simultaneously the pen screams in excruciating pain and is silenced. The notebook, it must burn for the pen’s mistake. It too was a part of

the plan to stop you from writing down the thoughts. Burn it.
