If you have ever dreamed of living in one of Britain’s Historic Houses but longed for an uncomplicated, modern style of living then Hainton House is for you.

Seven luxurious Apartments lie within this beautiful Georgian building, dating back to 1765 and situated in the historic village of

Branston, two miles south of the City of Lincoln and all its amenities. Hainton House was built by the Curtois Family, who were patrons and

rectors of the Church and Parish of Branston between 1680 and 1891, and after extensive renovation by Lincoln based Developer, Castle Square Developments Ltd, the building has entered a new chapter in its long and colourful life.

Turned into Apartments in the 1930’s, two US Air Force Officers lived in the top floor Apartments during WWII. When the property came to the attention of Castle Square Developments Ltd in 2011 it had a short life expectancy and required significant investment.

George Lockwood, A Director at Castle Square Developments Ltd said: “Hainton House faced an uncertain future and required careful restoration and imagination to bring it into the 21st Century, whilst preserving the Georgian charm that made it such an important building within the community.”

With affordable prices ranging from £150,000 to £235,000 the Apartments are an ideal opportunity to enjoy grand country living with none of the maintenance worries associated with an historic building. Virtual Freeholds (999 year Leases) are available for all the Apartments and a Management Company has been set up to take care of the running and ongoing maintenance of the building and landscaped gardens. Each purchaser will become a member of the Management Company. A separate, two bedroom Cottage and Georgian ‘Smoke House’ are also available.

Tim Downing, of property agents Pygott and Crone said: “This is one of the finest examples of Georgian property in the Lincoln area and its history is certainly something that has a wide appeal. It has been sympathetically restored and that has given it a new lease of life.”

With high ceilings and double aspect views, every property is unique and comes with two allocated car parking spaces. There are either Church or village views from the Apartments and all look down onto the landscaped gardens to the North and South.

Apartments have some or all of the following features: original Georgian cornicing, fireplaces, panelling, stained glass windows, double height ceilings and front and rear aspects. The Cottage and Apartments 1 and 2 also have their own, private garden areas.

New Homes Manager at Pygott and Crone, Mel Parker said: “We are very pleased with how well attended the Open Days have been and look forward to putting on another in February 2013. Meanwhile, there is terrific local support for the project, serious interest from a wide catchment and sales are progressing well.”To view the Apartments or find out more, please call Mel Parker at Pygott and Crone on 01522 518295 or visit www.haintonhouse.co.uk.

I am delighted to pen this foreword in the run up to Christmas and a few weeks into command. By the time

you read this, I should also have the upper hand against a mountain of packing boxes. I am exceptionally fortunate to have the privilege of being Commanding Officer of such an outstanding station as Coningsby, and Lisa, James, Henry and I are delighted to be back amongst old and new friends. Every day brings constant reminders that the success and achievements that the Station and its individual elements enjoy are rooted in the people who serve here, and the families and loved ones who support them: I intend to make sure that we never take that support, and the many sacrifices that it entails, for granted. The current deployment of 7 FP Wing to Afghanistan, and the operational duty of many Coningsby servicemen and women from the Falklands to the Middle East, exemplifies the selflessness and commitment demanded by military service. Christmas puts this into greater relief, and our thoughts are with all ‘on ops’ and their families.

As we look to 2013, it would be remiss of me not to reflect on another exceptionally

busy year. The support to the Olympics, both at sporting venues and - in the eyes of the media - most obviously at RAF Northolt imposed a significant burden on all yet was accomplished alongside the maintenance of QRA, deployments various, and the gearing up of activity across the Station to underpin Typhoon Force growth. As the year ends, we have also welcomed the staff from the 1 Group Typhoon Force HQ. Allied to the myriad events supported by BBMF and the unstinting individual and collective charitable activities, the commitment and spirit of everyone at Coningsby is remarked upon by all who visit.

In the New Year, an exciting exercise programme includes the first RAF Typhoon participation on Exercise Red Flag and deployments to the Middle East, with more to come. Equally, I am absolutely seized by the need to make sure that what we do is at a sustainable tempo, provides time for personal and professional development..and has time for some fun too. I look forward to working with and for everyone at Coningsby in achieving this.

From all of the Stringer family, our best wishes to everyone for a very happy Christmas and New Year. Enjoy the holiday.

CONTENTS ISSUE 5 2012

ISSUE 5 2012

Welcome to the fifth and final edition of OnetoOne for 2012. This is my last edition

as Editor after a year in the role; I am due to take over as PMC and will be handing over as Editor to Sqn Ldr Bob Jones, OC MSF, XI Sqn. As I stand down, I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to all those who have contributed to the magazine over the last year, the distribution team, deputy editors, publishers, and not least of all, those who have taken the time to submit articles. In particular, I thank Sgt Keith Park who has been lead Distribution Team and without whose efforts the magazines would not reach their destination. Sgt Park has filled the role for some considerable time and I and the previous Editors are very grateful for his support.

This edition starts with a first foreword from Gp Capt Stringer having recently taken over command of RAF Coningsby from Air Cdre Sampson. In his message, the Stn Cdr reflects on another busy and testing year for stn personnel and looks forward to the

challenges we will face in 2013. You’ll also note the Stn Cdr’s photograph which is more informal than his predecessors have used in this magazine and reflects the emphasis and importance the Stn Cdr places on people and family life.

As this is the pre-Christmas edition, its important to highlight Padre Elliot’s words and reflection on the festive period. His references to challenges and change highlight a common factor in many of the articles that have featured throughout the year and the fact that we see success on so many fronts perhaps serves to highlight the importance of team and ethos which are the bedrock of service life. Highlighting success is prominent with the front cover devoted to the achievements of the Stn’s equitation club in the recent RAF Championships; a big well done to involved, not least for having the courage to take up the sport in the first place.

Carrying on the Christmas theme, an important article from MT on road safety is included which highlights the education programme ongoing which aims to highlight how

consumption of alcohol inhibits the ability to drive effectively. Clearly an important message at this time of year in particular.

As ever, the edition includes articles from the FL sqns and 29(R) Sqn which review the busy lives sqn personnel lead, their successes and a number of departures. Chief amongst the successes is the selection of Flt Lt Jamie Norris from 29(R) Sqn as the Typhoon Display Pilot for 2013. Many congratulations Jamie from Ed; a short article profiles Jamie’s career and interests and no doubt we’ll see a lot more of him throughout the display season next year.

Running also features prominently in this edition. An article from Ben Saunders on 41(R) Sqn describes his progress in meeting the challenge to run at least 5km every day for 365 days. The challenge is still in progress and its timely to highlights Ben’s efforts for charity as he enters the final stages of this grueling challenge. An article from the Typhoon Training Facility describes how a team of service personnel, MOD Civil Servants and BAE Systems personnel completed

a challenge to visit 100 Lincolnshire based RAF stns in 100 days, raising over £2500 for local good causes. The annual Boston Slog is also featured with hardy souls from across the Stn using pedal and foot power to travel between Coningsby and Boston, not for the faint hearted on busy Lincolnshire roads!

Last but not least, an interesting article from Depth Support Sqn describes a staff ride to Luxembourg via some of the battle grounds of WW2 in Northern France and Belgium. Such events highlight the importance of reflecting on the past as we meet today’s operational commitments and with my OC FDS hat on, I would encourage you all to consider organising and/or participating in similar events next year.

And finally, I would like to offer my best wishes to Sqn Ldr Bob Jones as he takes the reins. Please make every effort to provide him with your articles, whatever the event, your input is vital to the continued success of OnetoOne.

Thank you, best wishes and Merry Christmas to you all. Best wishes.

The stability was short lived however, as the entire Squadron deployed to Lossiemouth at the

end of September in support of Exercise Joint Warrior and CQWI. As the largest Joint Multi-National Exercise to occur on UK soil, this proved to be a fantastic training opportunity for our Pilot’s, Engineers and Support Staff. The flying programme ensured that we maximised these opportunities with the first wave arriving into work well before sunrise and the final stragglers getting back just in time for last orders at the bar! Huge credit should be given to our outstanding Engineering team, who, between their shifts worked 24 hours a day to ensure the aircraft were up to the task. Their unsociable hours were compensated slightly by being accommodated in some of Inverness’ finest Hotels, whilst the

Pilots had to make do with the delights of Kinloss Barracks!

The Exercise also gave the Squadron some much needed time to socialise together, whether that be in the many great bars of Inverness or as the Pilots found out in the middle weekend, the little-known cosmopolitan gem of Kingussie… Cheers Keady!

The end of the Exercise was also the final hurdle for the Typhoon QWI course and we can now officially welcome Flt Lt Sonny Roe back to XI Sqn after a relaxing 10 month break on 29 Sqn... In addition to Sonny, we are also joined by Flt Lt Paul “Scally” Halpin from the OCU, who we welcomed to the Sqn by sending him straight down to the Falklands for 7 weeks!

The upper echelons of the Squadron have seen the biggest change of late, with the departure of Sqn Ldr Pete

“Boomer” Ward who leaves to start a job in the recently relocated (conveniently for him) Typhoon Group Headquarters on the other side of the airfield. We also say goodbye to our SEngO Sqn Ldr Mark Butterworth, who is off to improve his Sun-Tan with the Typhoon Sales Team! Replacing them respectively are Sqn Ldr Al Allsop, who joins us from the Typhoon Simulator and Sqn Ldr Pete Severein who has recently returned from an Out Of Area post in Afghanistan.

As we look forward to the end of the year, the pace will ramp up again as we prepare for Exercise Red Diamond in December to ensure that we are suitably prepared for our trip to the States in the New Year (Did we mention that we’re going to Red

Flag??!!) It’s certainly not all work however, as we head towards the festive season. The Calendar is brimming with XI Sqn functions, including Champagne tasting, Multiple Christmas Parties and a Squadron Half Marathon to ensure that we’re all looking our best for the Vegas Pool Parties!Ociores Acrioresque Aquilis.

We hope you all enjoy your time on 29(R) Sqn.

WE HAVE BEEN AS BUSY AS EVER OVER THE PAST 3 MONTHS, MAkING THE MOST OF THE BRITISH “SUMMER”. THE SQN HAS GRADUATED 16 MORE PILOTS AND WE HAVE PASSED THE HUGE MILESTONE OF 200 TYPHOON PILOTS TRAINED SINCE THE STANDING UP OF THE TYPHOON FORCE!

Aside from the pilots already mentioned we have also said goodbye to some

of our permanent instructor staff. Flt Lt Tim Clement leaves us for a move to 100 Sqn based at RAF Leeming. He will now join the dark side and assume the role of “red air”. I would like to take this opportunity to remind Tim that we will take 5s to 8s and he can take 0s to 3s…that should cover affiliation coordination for the next 3 years! We also bid farewell to Flt Lt Andy Hawkes who leaves us to join 3(F) Sqn as the Sqn QWI. If you get a spare 5 minutes (unlikely) then can you please come back to explain what a QWI is doing with pet house rabbits? We wish you both the best of luck for your next tour and whatever the future holds.

Joining us to become the lastest Typhoon Qualified Pilot Instructors are Flt Lt Mike

Mason who joins us from 3(F) Sqn and Flt Lt Mark Pocock from TTF. Welcome to you both. Finally, we say hello to our new QWI, Flt Lt Kev Broder. We have a stash of ASIM forms ready for your tour.

Aside from our main role we have also found time to carry out a fair amount of force development and adventurous training. September saw eleven 29(R) Sqn personnel cycle 600 miles from RAF Coningsby to FAF St Dizier in only 6 days. The expedition went extremely well with 10 of the 11 personnel completing the entire distance. Between us we only suffered 6 punctures, 1 broken

spoke and 11 sore behinds. The weather was near perfect and the navigation went without a single hitch. WARNING: only 50% of the previous sentence is true!

The expedition allowed us to visit sites of historical importance including airfields previously used by 29 Sqn and British War Memorials in Belgium and France. This would not have been possible if it were not for the outstanding help we received from everybody involved.

We would like to particularly thank the Metropolitan Police, the Worshipful Company of Paviors, P&O Ferries and of course our support crew for

all of their assistance during the 600 in 6. The entire effort helped raise circa £10,000 divided between our 2 chosen charities; Cancer Research and Alzheimer’s Research. Thank you to everybody who sponsored us. If you still wish to sponsor us please visit our website www.600in6.co.uk

Finally, we look forward to the upcoming festive period. The social calendar looks busy with plenty of opportunities to celebrate the hard work put in by the entire Sqn over the past year and also plan for the forthcoming year which promises to be another busy and exciting 12 months!

Until next time…

RAF CONINGSBY IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT FLIGHT LIEUTENANT JAMIE NORRIS WILL BE THE ROYAL AIR FORCE TYPHOON DISPLAY PILOT FOR THE 2013 AIRSHOW SEASON.

The display will be returning to 29(Reserve) Squadron at RAF Coningsby following a

two year absence. The display was unable to go ahead during the 2011 season due to operational commitments in the Mediterranean. In 2012 the role was undertaken by Squadron Leader Scott Loughran

from 6 Squadron based at RAF Leuchars.

Flt Lt Norris said, “It is an honour to be selected as the 2013 Display Pilot; I’m looking forward to demonstrating the capability of this world-class aircraft at venues around the country next summer.”

Flt Lt Norris will begin practicing his display routine in the New Year.

Jamie was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne and grew up in Northumberland.

He was educated at Seaton Burn College and Northumbria University. Whilst studying for his degree, Jamie was a member of Northumbrian Universities Air Squadron (NUAS) based at RAF Leeming. He was awarded a bursary during this time and joined the RAF as a Pilot in 2002.

Upon completion of Advanced Fast Jet Training, Jamie was selected to be a first tourist “creamie” instructor. He spent 3 years at RAF Valley teaching students to fly the Hawk T1 before completing Tactical Weapons training on 19(R) Squadron.

Following completion of his training, Jamie was posted to 20(R) Squadron at RAF Wittering to fly the Harrier GR9. Upon leaving the Operational Conversion

Unit (OCU), Jamie was posted to IV(AC) Squadron at RAF Cottesmore. During his time on the Harrier Jamie took part in multiple overseas deployments and exercises in Norway, USA, Canada and Cyprus including embarked operations onboard HMS Illustrious.

Jamie flew the Harrier GR9 until the disbandment of IV(AC) Squadron in 2010 at which point he transferred to the Typhoon FGR4. Following completion of the OCU he remained on 29(R) Squadron as a Typhoon Qualified Pilot Instructor (QPI). As a QPI, Jamie has trained many of the current Typhoon Force pilots and contributes to RAF Coningsby’s primary task of Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) duties.

Jamie is married to Helen and they have 2 children. His interests include classic cars and motorbikes, cycling and family walks with Max, their German Shepherd.

What better way to sustain the m o t i v a t i o n than to have

a tangible and achievable target for a good cause?

Step forward to the 1st of March and the first steps of my personal challenge to run a minimum of 5k every day for children’s charity Dreams Come True (www.dctc.org.uk) were behind me, the self-imposed rules simple; Run a minimum of 5k EVERY day for 365 days and no roll over on the mileage (any distance over 5k will not count towards the target for the next day)

The biggest question I had for myself in the early days was “will I be able to avoid injury to be able to keep going for a whole year?”

Initially it was the physical side of the challenge that presented the most difficulty, pushing unwilling legs into running regardless of condition, rubbing liniment into stiff muscles to ease the soreness, but it didn’t seem

long before the legs had toughened up, and it was mostly a mental challenge from that point on.

The first 6 months seem a bit of a blur now, fleeting memories of relaxed runs in glorious sunshine and mad dashes to “get the miles in” occasionally with company but mostly solo, the most vivid memories being the day I forgot to check my distance before stopping my run, resulting in having to go out again for another run (why bother just topping up, just run another 3 1/2 miles…) and a hill race with driving rain and sleet at the summit, an example of either my sheer stupidity, or willingness, to run in inclement weather dressed only in shorts and a vest!

One of the positive aspects of running to a target is that it drives you to push through the lethargy that leads to missed training sessions, often with the reward that the weather isn’t as unpleasant as you first thought, or a rare sighting of an owl ghosting past in the

half darkness, sometimes it’s the view that makes you pause to drink it in, or the even rarer days when running seems effortless (more often than not meaning a later finish than planned!) however, not every day can be a great day and the tough days are the real test of character over the year.

Fast forward to day 200, a cool Monday in early September. The weather is still warm and sunny and I’m out again for a morning run. The initial feeling is to just run the minimum distance, a quick dash round the old bomb dump and back for a shower before work starts. As the legs start to warm up and the breathing starts to calm down and after some quick mental arithmetic, the route has changed and I’m off down towards New York village for a run round the airfield, as I’m turning back into station I can slow down to allow myself a little pat on the back, 200 days gone and just over 800 miles covered, no prizes or fanfare meets me on my return, just the satisfaction of another day logged, more miles under the belt and another day closer to my target of running every day for a whole year.

Thank you for your continued support.

AS I COME TO THE END OF MY 4 YEAR TENURE

aS SenIor ENGINEERING

offIcer (SENGO) OF

THE BBMF, I’D LIkE TO TAkE THIS

OPPORTUNITY TO THANk ALL THOSE

peopLe who have made MY TOUR A

LITTLE EASIER.

It includes the various companies who we do business with, the BBMF Project Team, the

members of the public who, without their support the Flight would not be sustainable. But most of all I would like to publicly thank all the Engineers who have worked for me during my time as SEngO. It is because of these dedicated people that the Nations iconic aircraft remain airworthy and a tribute to all those people that made the ultimate sacrifice in the name of freedom.

I wish the Flight continued success in the future and it has been a privilege to be part of the legacy that is the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. D Marshall IEng. MIETWarrant Officer

The nominees received their awards at an event at London’s medieval Guildhall on Tuesday

23 October 2012. Among those receiving a total of over 20 different awards are military aircrew, airline pilots, air-sea rescue heroes and test pilots. All have been chosen for their commitment to the highest flying standards.

The awards stem from the creation of the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators in 1929, the spirit of the medieval guilds spurring early pilots including Sir Alan Cobham and Sir Sefton Brancker, then Minister of State for Air, to form “an association of pilots to foster recognition of the importance of their professionalism and sometime heroism.”

That spirit remains every bit as appropriate today and the GAPAN awards are particularly noteworthy because the recipients are selected by fellow pilots.

The Master’s Commendation, has been awarded this year to two people, both from historic aviation. Flt Lt David J Hawkins RAF has since 1998, been the Operations Officer and Adjutant of the Royal Air Force Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and has been personally involved in the planning and liason for every single event in which the Flight has participated over the last 13 years.

The presenting Officer was Admiral Sir George Zambellas KCB CBE, Fleet Commander and Deputy Chief of Naval Staff and Air marshal C R Spink CB CBE.

Flt Lt Hawkins said “It was such a fantastic honour to receive this accolade from my peers - I was delighted to receive this award at the end of my career. I was so surprised when OC BBMF phoned me to say that I had received it.”

The scale of Flt Lt Hawkins achievement can be found in the statistics for the BBMF’s 2011 season, where 1,044 aircraft appearances were planned including the flypast at the Royal Wedding which captured a global audience of 2 billion people. His award recognised both this outstanding contribution to the RAF and a career which will see 2012 mark Jack’s 50th and final year of uniformed service, having joined the RAF as an Aircraft Apprentice in 1962.

OC RAF BBMF, Sqn Ldr Dunc Mason said “It is always so gratifying to see one of the team honoured for the outstanding work they do. Jack’s role as the Operations Officer was a demanding and pressurised one. We all wish him the very best in his retirement.”

AS YOU RECEIVE THIS MAGAzINE THE CHRISTMAS PREPARATIONS WILL BE WELL UNDERWAY.

The street lights are lit, the works party booked, the presents are being wrapped

and Santa has his elves at the ready to deploy. And why not you may ask? Winter is a cold and dark time in which many suffer from depression or SAD syndrome. If Christmas can lift our mood and bring a bit of cheer then let’s make it so.

However, our cheer at Christmas time is not an escape from life’s grim realities, there will still be the lonely, the hungry, the bereaved and the victims of political and social unrest. Our people will still be deployed and separated from there loved ones. The recession and its impact will no doubt still shadow many celebrations this year and have the shops beckoning us in with added urgency.

If we measure Christmas by all this we may just have a

hangover before it even starts! But Christmas at its best is the reminder that a child born into poverty in an draughty stable, in a militarised country claimed to be the Son Of God. Really, is that possible? Well some may think not and will argue their case with conviction while others will rebut the arguments with equal vigour. As for me, well I measure my response not by the arguments but by the way this Christ-child has changed so many lives. What is the hallmark of His legacy? Well for me and so many others down the ages, it’s the joy He brings and the Christmas carols reflect this so clearly.

“Joy to the world! the Lord is come:Let earth receive her king;Let every heart prepare Him room, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven and nature sing.”

May you sing and share His joy this Christmas.

Blessings, Mike Elliott

OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS, A NUMBER OF MEMBERS OF TTF (TYPHOON TRAINING FACILITY) AT RAF CONINGSBY purSued a CHARITABLE QUEST; TO VISIT 100 RAF STATIONS IN 100 DAYS WITHIN LIncoLnShIre BOTH PAST AND PRESENT.

The team, comprising of RAF, MOD Civil Servants and BAE Systems personnel, visited bases

dating from the earliest days of the Royal Flying Corps, bomber and fighter command bases of the Second World War, the nuclear era of the Cold War, and current

operational bases within the length and breath of the county.

The enterprising participants used various modes of transport, feet to bicycles, canoes to motor cycles.

Events kicked off on Thursday 7th June 2012 with a cycle ride from RAF Cranwell to RAF Coningsby. The event finished with a final “Marathon Day” on Friday 14th September 2012, with a team running from RAF Waddington to RAF Coningsby and visiting Colby Grange, Metheringham and Woodhall Spa on the way.

The challenge raised over £2622, which is being split between the Lincoln County Hospital Special Care Baby Unit and Pilgrim Hospital Boston Breast Care Unit.

One of the team members, Mr Max Waldron said ‘This was a very rewarding experience. As well as being able to raise some money for two deserving charities, it was great to share

the legacy of aviation heritage that can be found in ‘Bomber County’ with our colleagues’

Mr Adrian Graves on behalf of United Lincolnshire Hospitals said, “Once again the personnel from RAF Coningsby and colleagues have offered great support to the hospital wards to which we are very grateful. Raising £2622 will go a long way in helping the wards provide care to the patients”

Steve Brown, Head of Training at the Typhoon Training Facility, RAF Coningsby together with members of the team presented a Cheque to Kristy Wilkinson, United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Nocton Ward. The presentation was held at East Kirby, Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre in front of their taxiable Lancaster NX611 “Just Jane” on the 8th November 2012.

100 STATIONS IN 100 DAYS – CHEQUE PREsEntAtion

perSonneL from RAF STATIONS CONINGSBY AND WADDINGTON IN LIncoLnShIre HAVE BROUGHT BACk MOUSTACHES FOR 'MOVEMBER', and raISed VITAL FUNDS FOR MEN'S CANCER.

Corporal Neil Dobson a Survival Equipment Fitter based at RAF

Coningsby, was the proud winner of the Movember competition. (Photo above)

You could be mistaken for thinking this photo was taken in days gone by but you'd be wrong. RAF personnel at RAF Coningsby have gone back to the 1940s; a time when the moustache was considered part of the uniform for men serving in the RAF.

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces

in the UK and around the world when 'Mo Bros' commit to growing a moustache for the 30 days of November and, in doing so, become walking billboards for the cause.

The aim is to raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Two-hundred-and-twenty-five men from RAF Coningsby raised both money for and awareness of male cancers this month by taking part in the Movember campaign (along with 30 individuals from RAF Waddington's General Engineering Flight).

The winner, chosen because his handlebar moustache best evoked the 'Spitfire Spirit', was Corporal Neil Dobson, a Survival Equipment Fitter from RAF Coningsby.

From 1 November each man has grown a moustache. The participants paid a fee and some increased the pot by raising additional sponsorship.

Pn Friday 30 Novmeber, the Station Warrant Officer, WO Watson, who commended the effort, judged the moustaches. He then reminded all participants that moustaches are not regulation and that they must be clean-shaven by Monday!

DURING A LONG weekend In OCTOBER, TEN MEMBERS OF DEPTH SUPPORT SQuadron (dSS) WERE LUCkY ENOUGH TO TAkE PART IN A STAFF rIde focuSSed ON REMEMBERING AND HONOURING THOSE THAT FELL IN BELGIUM AND LUXEMBOURG DURING WORLD WARS 1 AND 2. THE VISIT encompaSSed THE FOLLOWING:

• A visit to the Menin Gate in Ypres, Belgium, to pay respects to the many that fell there during WW1 and to visit the Flanders Museum.

• Representing the RAF at the invitation of the British Ambassador to Luxembourg, the Honourable Alice Walpole, at a reception to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the RAFA Branch in Luxembourg and to honour the RAF.

• Provide ceremonial support at the following memorial Services: The US Army Air Corps memorial Perle, followed by a short visit to the 385th Bomber Group museum, Perle. The RAF memorial, Rambrouch, followed by a reception at Rambrouch town hall.

• Support to the RAFA Wings charity gala dinner and ball.

Our continental adventure began in true British style with tea and bacon butties at the Station’s SSAFA Big Brew Up. For anyone who has yet to attend such an event I can’t recommend it enough, it’s half an hour of ‘fund raising’ and the excellent bacon baps easily see you through the long slog until lunch. All full up on floury baps we eventually commenced our journey to Ypres, Belgium via minibus and the man-

LIFE IN DEPTH ISSUE 5 2012

The Menin Gate memorial commemorates almost 55,000 of the British and Commonwealth soldiers that lost their lives in the Ypres Salient during WW1 but whose bodies have not been found. Nearly every vertical surface of the stone archway is covered with panels carved with the name, rank and regiment of each missing soldier.

On our visit to the Gate, there was an extended ceremony which included wreath laying and the words of the exhortation;

“THEY SHALL GROW NOT OLD, AS WE THAT ARE LEFT GROW OLD:

AGE SHALL NOT WEARY THEM, NOR THE YEARS CONDEMN.

AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN AND IN THE MORNING,WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.”

As we stood amongst the silent crowd surrounded by the stone carved names of thousands of lost soldiers the words from Laurence

Binyon’s poem “For the Fallen” had never sounded more relevant or more poignant. After the ceremony we had the opportunity to explore the memorial with many of us looking for our own surnames amongst the vast panels of names.

We completed our experience of Ypres with a visit to the In Flanders Fields Museum. The museum uses traditional glass partitioned displays of weapons and equipment and models of trench systems alongside hi-tech video screens and displays to convey the history and experiences of life and death in the trenches.

There was a great deal to see and experience but unfortunately our time was cut short as we had a further journey to complete to Luxembourg.

After another minibus journey we arrived at our hotel to freshen up and this time get into our No.1s and Medals. Our destination was the residence of the British Ambassador to Luxembourg to attend the reception. Upon arrival at the residence we were greeted by the Chairman of RAFA in Luxembourg, Brian Darke and finally by the Ambassador herself. If TV has taught us anything it’s that the British diplomatic community is fuelled by Ferrero Rocher chocolates. With this in mind C/T Frost was proud to present the Ambassador with a box of the

nutty chocolate treats to ‘spoil us’ with later in the evening.

However, as the evening progressed and the tray piled full of Ferrero Rocher failed to appear we came to realise that the TV ad may have lied to us. Thankfully one or two glasses of champagne and an array of canapés made up for our chocolate disappointment.

The third day of our RAFA Memorial weekend began bright and early and once again saw us in our No.1 Uniforms, this time bound for the USAF 385th Bomber Group Memorial at Perle. Allied aircraft flew over Luxembourg en-route to bombing raids in Germany with many crash landing on their return flights. The memorial commemorates 2 USAF B17s that collided near Perle with the loss of 18 crew. At the event we were joined by personnel from RAF Cosford, RAF Benson, the US Air Force and the Luxembourg Army. Whilst waiting for the memorial service to start we were approached by an elderly gentleman who was taking photos. He told us about his experience as a child in Nazi occupied Luxembourg. He

made marvel that is the Channel Tunnel.

As part of our staff ride each person was given a ‘stand’; a subject relevant to our trip to research and present to the rest of the group. These were given throughout the trip and the topics covered were as follows:

1. Ypres - WW 1 & 2 – Chf Tech Steve Cartwright

2. The Menin Gate Memorial – Chf Tech Jack Frost

3. Trench warfare and the use of aviation – Sgt Roddie Davies

4. Overview of RAFA and their involvement with the RAF today – SAC Daniele Soulby

5. USAF 385th Bomber Group involvement during WWII & RAF/USAF Bombing Strategy – Cpl Rowden

6. History behind the Rambrouch RAF Memorial – SAC “Mac” McNamara

7. Battle of the Bulge Overview – Cpl Tomkinson

8. General Patton & Leadership Style – Flt Lt James Kingswood After arriving at our hotel in

Ypres we had time to freshen up before the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate memorial. At 8pm, the road through the gate is closed and volunteer buglers sound the Last Post. This followed by a minutes silence and the Réveille, much like every remembrance Sunday in the UK. Unlike the UK this event takes place each and every day and has done since 11th November 1929. The only interruption to the ceremony was between 1940 and 1944 due to the Nazi occupation of Ypres.

recounted with joy how the sound of allied aircraft passing over Perle on their way to Germany brought hope to the civilian population and made them feel that occupied Luxembourg had not been forgotten by the allies. The gentleman’s story reminded us that the effects of WW2 were not only felt by aircrew but also by the civilians that lived each day under Nazi occupation.

After the remembrance ceremony and wreath laying we visited the USAF 385th Bomber Group museum located in Perle. The museum contained items and aircraft parts recovered from B17 crash sites as well as items and uniforms donated by the USAF 385th Bomber Group veterans and other allied Air Forces. The museum provided an insight into the lives of the bomber crews and to the civilians that assisted downed aircrew throughout Luxembourg. None of us will forget the speech given by the museum curator, who was a young boy during WW2, and his final comment which was:

‘It is because of people like you (RAF & USAF) that we no longer had to say ‘Heil Hitler’ every day and live in permanent fear.’

Our final act of remembrance for the day was more personal as it was to pay our respects to the crew of an RAF Halifax bomber that crashed near the town of Rambrouch. Three of the seven crew died in the crash and are buried at a memorial in the town. It may be surprising to learn that all of the crew on board the Halifax were SNCOs rather than officers, but this was not unusual during WW2.

As a result of attending both memorials, we learnt a great deal

about the relationship between Luxembourg and the allied Air Forces that flew overhead. The people of Luxembourg hold the RAF and other air forces in high regard as symbols of hope during the occupation and for contributing to their eventual liberation. They show thanks by creating and maintaining memorials to those aircrew that never made it home, and in the case of the gentleman in Perle even expressing that gratitude in person. The allied air forces in return owe a huge debt to the people of Luxembourg who aided surviving downed aircrew, often at great personal risk.

The final event of the weekend was the RAFA Wings Ball hosted rather conveniently in our hotel. The evening consisted of a champagne reception, a meal and live music to dance the night away. The continental air and the esprit de corps gave rise to some previously hidden showbiz talent ranging from the armourer’s singing skills to Sqn Ldr Hall and Flt Lt Kingswood’s suave moves

on the dance floor. If there was ever a forces version of Strictly Come Dancing our very own DSS commissioned officers could be prime contenders. Overall, the ball was a great success with 3800 Euro raised for RAFA.

I believe I can speak for everyone from Team DSS when I say that the Memorial weekend was a great success and a fantastic experience. Visiting the memorials and speaking to the people of Luxembourg and Belgium gave a greater knowledge and appreciation of the effects of two world wars. As well as remembering the past we were also proud to have contributed to the present and future by supporting RAFA with their fundraising. On a personal note I will also treasure the look of confusion from the USAF personnel sitting on our table at the RAFA Ball when the Armourers began to sing……………….. ‘A…

OC DSS’S COMMENT:

I would specifically like to thank this team for going above and beyond during this trip. I had promised them that the part they would play throughout the weekend would just require them to stand and pay respects at each memorial. It quickly became apparent that the RAFA team had other ideas and we were asked to take part in unrehearsed parades, act as standard bearers for veterans who, through illness, could not carry them and wreath bearers to the Ambassador and to the air officers present. The prize for

stepping out of his comfort zone the most goes to FS John Kemsley who found himself standing in as a Parade WO and marching some 50 military personnel from a variety of stns, forces and nations through the centre of Rambrouch. Throughout they all acquitted themselves extremely well and they were all fine ambassadors for the RAF.THANkS: thanks go to Mr Brian Darke and the RaFa Luxembourg Branch for inviting the DSS team to this prestigious event and to the Honourable alice Walpole for her invite to her residence.

FS TMF COMMENTSHints and tips on how to organise a trip like this:

1. Get the finance sorted early, know your limits.

Royal Air Force and Civilian personnel irrespective of ability are invited to

participate and encouraged to raise funds by individual sponsorship for Cancer Research UK (CR UK) and The British Heart Foundation (BHF).

Twenty-six RAF and nine Civilian competitors including personnel from RAF Waddington took part in the 25th Boston Slog on Thursday 11 October 2012.

The first leg of the race began at RAF Coningsby where the Station Commander, Group Captain ‘Sammy’ Sampson brought the competitors under starter’s orders; also in attendance were three representatives from CR

UK. A BHF representative was in attendance prior to the Boston leg of the race, which was started by the Mayor, Councillor Brotherton.

Senior Aircraftman Anthony Robinson (Aviation Fuels) completed the ‘Fun Run’ in 1hr 22min 20sec, the fastest time ever recorded for this event since the first Boston Slog in 1987 and beating his previous record from last year by 5 mins.

Mr Chris O’Rourke (BAE) is a ‘Cycleman’ veteran; this is the 8th year he has competed and the 7th time he has won the challenge.

Mrs Simpson from Cancer Research UK said: “Thank you for inviting me to be there for

the start of the race and I am extremely glad that the weather held out for everyone.”

LSCC member, Corporal Alanna Adron-Walk said: “Thanks go to WESCO Aviation who donated £200 to the fund and a big thank you to everyone for helped to organise this great event as without their assistance it would not be possible.” She added: “Well done to all the competitors – we hope to see you back next year for the 26th Boston Slog.”

Competitors are in the process of collecting pledged monies; the total amount is expected to be in excess of £750 which will be divided equally between the BHF and CR UK.

T he RAF Coningsby Equitation Club is a small, friendly club that aims to foster and provide training

in all things equine and actively encourage all personnel at Coningsby to give horse riding a try.

It is affiliated to the RAF Equitation Association (RAFEA) and takes part in the RAFEA Inter Station League (ISL).

Membership is free to all service personnel, dependants, MOD Employed Civilians and contractors.

Training is held on a regular basis at Castledyke Equestrian Centre at Gypsy Bridge and this year has been focussing on the dressage test and confidence building with regard to the show jumping phase of the ISL.

The equine year started off with entry to the RAF Equitation Association Inter-Station League (ISL) and a mad scrabble to find 5 willing RAF personnel (4 riders and 1 reserve) to make up the RAF Coningsby team.

In the ISL, 4 riders compete against other RAF Saddle Clubs within a geographical area in a riding test and show jumping competition. Each rider completes a riding test where they are required to carry out a series of movements designed to show the judge their ability to influence the horses natural paces and obedience. Once all riders have completed the riding test, they then each jump a course of show jumps where the height of the fences is set at 2’3” – 2’ 6” for the initial rounds with faults awarded for a knock down, refusal or a combination of both.

The initial round was against teams for RAF Cranwell, Waddington and Linton on Ouse.

Due to outstanding riding on the part of FS Saul Vine, Sgt Debbie Leather, Cpl Sian Kiszczuk and SAC(T) Jayde Hunt the team won all of the preliminary rounds in Jun and

Jul and had a long wait until the 31st October before finding we had won a place in the final.

The team decided to have a sneaky preview of the horses and the show jumping course on the pretext of supporting those teams that had made it through to the “B” final. Not the best idea when they saw one horse who stood at a massive 18.2hh (6’1” at the base of his neck for those that don’t know horses) and wasn’t an easy ride, this did not foster a feeling of confidence.

The day of the final loomed. One change of rider, 12 dressage tests, 12 rounds of show jumping and 8 horses stood between Coningsby and the trophy.

Lossiemouth and High Wycombe were the opponents and each team was suffering an onset of nerves.

With a harder dressage test and show jumps set at 2’9” it was not going to be an easy thing to achieve a decent score.

Competition over, the riders retired to the club room for lunch and to nervously await the results. All 3 teams had enjoyed the morning and were laughing and smiling.

At last the wait was over and the results were announced.

Individual placings of: 1st and individual Champion Sgt Vinnie Potts, 4th SAC(T) Jayde Hunt

For the first time in 30 years, Coningsby were crowned ISL Champions.

For anyone that thinks horse riding is easy they should give it a go. It’s great fun, a challenge and not as easy as it looks. Roll on 2013 and the next ISL competition.
