We are delighted to welcome many new members to the Branch, and it is our hope that they too develop a love for Scottish Country dancing. Thank you to our teachers for working together on the new schedule on Wednesdays. We have had a lot of positive feedback from the four weeks of class. The annual picnic at Linda and Bob’s home in Poplar Hill took place on August 19th on a lovely sunny day, absolutely perfect weather for the occasion. Although our numbers were much reduced this year, we enjoyed the company of several members of Sarnia Branch. After a very tasty pot luck dinner, we donned our dancing shoes and enjoyed a few favourite dances. I would like to thank Linda and Bob once again for providing warm hospitality and beautiful surroundings for us to enjoy. As I write, our Ceilidh night (Scottish Party) is approaching on Friday October 12th at Elmwood Presbyterian Church on Elmwood Avenue, beginning at 7.30 pm. This is a fun night of easy dances, entertainment and good food, and an ideal opportunity to invite family and friends to experience Scottish Country dancing. I would like to thank Brian Campbell for his continued efforts and support, as he ensures London Branch has the insurance coverage desired by our venues. This has not been an easy task and I thank him for his time and patience. We look forward to the November Monthly Dance at Metropolitan Church, downtown London on November 9th. This year there will be a military theme to the programme in keeping with a time of remembrance. Please join us and wear a poppy. In the meantime, keep on dancing!

Bursary Fund Have you ever considered attending a workshop hosted by another branch or becoming qualified to be a Scottish Country Dance Teacher? Our London Branch has a bursary fund to help pay for you to attend workshops or teacher candidate classes and exams. You may apply for workshop subsidy once in a two-year period. All that we ask in return is a short write up for The Reel News to tell other members about the experience. Letters of application should include workshop dates and registration fees and be given to Phyllis Dunne.

Branch Award Nominations Phyllis Dunne Although many members make significant contributions to our Branch, there are some members who make contributions to the greater Scottish Country Dance community as well. Our Branch often presents a Branch Award to these individuals at the Annual Ball. Please read the following guidelines and decide if you would like to nominate a particular member for the award. Nominations are to be forwarded to Phyllis Dunne or another Committee of Management member before December 31, 2018. The Committee of Management will consider the nominations at their January meeting. Recipients of the Award will have done the following: • Upheld the objectives of the RSCDS over a period of years • Shown sustained and exceptional commitment to the promotion of Scottish Country Dancing • Been responsible for some notable achievements in relation to Scottish Country Dancing and/or its music • Not received a previous award as a member of our Branch

London Workshop Margaret Campbell

SAVE THE DATE – Saturday, February 23rd, 2019

Don't worry if your feet, knees, hips and back aren't working the way you'd like them to! We're taking a different approach this year so everyone can enjoy the workshop.

This year we're focusing on the skills you need to look great on the dance floor, even if your footwork could use a polish. We'll learn about proper handing, phrasing and covering as well as some new formations you may not have seen before. Our goal is to have a fun day of dancing and socializing, whether you're a beginner or have been dancing for years.

We're excited to welcome Moira Korus as our teacher. She teaches at the Glenview adult social group and the Rosedale children and teen group in Toronto. Moira learned Scottish country dance as a child in Edinburgh and attained her certificate in 2006. She is popular on the SCD workshop circuit and will be teaching at the TAC Summer School in 2019.

So mark your calendar. You don't want to miss this event! News from the Thrift Store Janet Schreiber The Thrift Store is coming to class on Wednesday, November 7th from 6-7 pm. There will be clothing for Scottish County Dancing (kilts for men and women), dance books and other unique merchandise. If you are taking inventory of your fall wardrobe and find clothing that doesn’t fit anymore, consider making a donation to the Thrift Store. Well made crafts will also be accepted. Contact Janet Schreiber or bring the items to class on Wednesday or Friday night.

Demo at the Lamplighter Catherine Shaw On Friday, September 28th, several members of the Branch attended the Friday night Ceilidh for the 69th Annual Gathering of the McPherson Clan (Canada) at the Lamplighter Inn, Wellington Road. We danced a couple of simple dances and then got them up on the floor for the rest of the hour. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and one person even asked about joining a group in the Hamilton area!

Summer Picnic Marg Allan

It has been a tradition to hold a summer picnic for the members of the London Branch. This year a small group from London and a number of dancers from the Sarnia group enjoyed a lazy summer day at Linda and Bob Watson’s home in the country. After a suitable time socializing under the trees, Bob fired up his grill so that people could cook their own meats and we all filled up on the wonderful potluck selection of salads and desserts. Just so we didn’t forget what we are all about, Helen Bell got us up to enjoy a few favourite dances. As the day wore on, Bob started a bonfire for all to enjoy and then people drifted off into the night.

Ceilidh Margaret Campbell

What a success! We had "egg-ceptional" dancing, entertainment and food! 54 people came - including 11 children - plus 3 teachers. A good time was had by all, judging by the smiles and enthusiasm.

If Scottish and Indian music had a baby, it would sound like this.........

KLM airline offers a unique Lost & Found service at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. A dedicated team is now on a mission to return items, found by cabin crew on board or by KLM airport staff, to their legitimate owners - as soon as possible. Even though this video turned out to be an advertising gimmick for the company, it is just way too cute to be missed. Enjoy!
