What do “the Church” and “the State” mean?
“The Church” = the Catholic Church & its officials (specifically the Pope)
“The State” = kings, rulers, & government
Cooperation between Church & State
Happened when they had similar goals or interests
Example: Charlemagne & Pope Leo IIIGoals: Leo III wanted to restore glory to Europe after fall of Rome & Charlemagne wanted to expand kingdom
Result: Leo III crowned Charlemagne “Holy Roman Emperor” & gave him a reason to conquer more land in the name of spreading Christianity
CharlemagneSet up feudal system to keep order in kingdom
Helped Pope put down a rebellion in 800s
Supported Church & spread Christianity
Tried to increase learning in kingdom
Kingdom split between 3 sons after death
Conflict between Church & State
Happened because each wanted more power over the other
Example: King Henry IV & Pope Gregory VIIReason: Pope made a statement that only he could appoint clergymen. Henry IV disagreed & tried to choose a new Pope to replace Gregory.
Result: Concordat of Worms in 1122 ended conflict & said kings could give clergy legal powers, but only the Pope could give them religious powers.
