The Resurrection & The Life(11:1-44)

JOHN 11:25-27• Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the

life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world."

James Shirley• The glories of our blood and state are shadows,

not substantial things. There is no armor against fate. Death lays his icy hand on kings. Scepter and crown must tumble down, and in the dust be equal laid with poor, crooked scythe and spade. Kings and commoners. Death finds them all.

Genesis 2:16-17• And the LORD God commanded the man, saying,

"You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die."

Genesis 3:4-5• But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not

surely die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

Genesis 3:6• So when the woman saw that the tree was good

for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.

Genesis 3:19• By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till

you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Romans 5:12• Therefore, just as sin came into the world

through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned

Genesis 3:21• And the LORD God made for Adam and for his

wife garments of skins and clothed them

Hebrews 10:3• But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins

every year

JOHN 11:1-4• Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany,

the village of Mary and her sister Martha. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. So the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is ill." But when Jesus heard it he said, "This illness does not lead to death. It is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

Head Scratchers

1. Lazarus’ Death does not lead to Death but rather the Glory of God

Piper• God’s glory is the outward radiance of the

intrinsic beauty and greatness of his manifold perfections

JOHN 11:5-6• – Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and

Lazarus. So, when he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

Head Scratchers

1. Lazarus’ Death does not lead to Death but rather the Glory of God

2. Jesus’ Love for the Family = 2-Day Delay

JOHN 11:11-15• After saying these things, he said to them, "Our

friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him." The disciples said to him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. Then Jesus told them plainly, "Lazarus has died, and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him."

Head Scratchers

1. Lazarus’ Death does not lead to Death but rather the Glory of God

2. Jesus’ Love for the Family = 2-Day Delay3. It is Good that Jesus Wasn’t There

Before Lazarus

JOHN 11:17• Now when Jesus came, he found that Lazarus

had already been in the tomb four days

JOHN 11:20-24• So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming,

she went and met him...Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day."

JOHN 11:38-39• Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the

tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days

JOHN 11:40-42• Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you

believed you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this on account of the people standing around, that they may believe that you sent me."

JOHN 11:43-44• When he had said these things, he cried out with

a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out." The man who had died came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go."

JOHN 11:45• Many of the Jews therefore, who had come with

Mary and had seen what he did, believed in him

JOHN 20:30-31• Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence

of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name

JOHN 11:25-26• Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the

life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?"

Isaiah 53:5• But he was pierced for our transgressions; he

was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed

2 Corinthians 5:21• He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our

behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him…

1 Peter 2:24• He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree,

that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed

Romans 5:6-10• For while we were still weak, at the right time

Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.

Romans 5:19• For as by the one man's disobedience the many

were made sinners, so by the one man's obedience the many will be made righteous

Matthew 28:5-6• But the angel said to the women, "Do not be

afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay

2 Timothy 1:8-10• Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony

about our Lord, nor of me his prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel

Acts 2:22-24• "Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of

Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know—this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it.

Revelation 1:17-18• When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead.

But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of Death and Hades

Wiersbe• While we thank God for what the Bible

teaches…we realize that we are saved by the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and not by a doctrine written in a book. When we know Him by faith, we need not fear the shadow of death. When you are sick, you want a doctor and not a medical book or a formula. When you are being sued, you want a lawyer and not a law book…

Wiersbe• Likewise, when you face your last enemy,

death, you want the Saviour and not a doctrine written in a book. In Jesus Christ, every doctrine is made personal (1 Cor. 1:30). When you belong to Him, you have all that you ever will need in life, death, time, or eternity!
