CHRISTMAS GREETINGS

AND RANCH NEWS

From Elk Creek Ranchand the Ridgway Family

FROM THE FAMilY

After far too long a time, we rendezvoused at the ranch inlate August. Everyone was on hand except Pat, who foundherself stranded in Halifax by the Air Canada strike. EvenAunt Betty made the long trek from Philadelphia. Like themountain men at their fandangoes, we basked in the tem-porary respite from our increasingly hectic separation. Docregaled us with stories from his years as a young doctor inCody. Perhaps Chip's decision to become a specialist inBoston had something to do with Dad's labors as a generalpractitioner in Cody. Betsy told us how she has joined thejogging craze, logging two miles a day--but around her din-

ing room table? Aunt Betty somehow injected us withenough of her energy to see us through the ranch chores andthe happy-hours. Chip and Hap did their annual imitations offerriers, and were fortunate enough to avoid the outragedkicks of bewildered horses. Cliff, drafted once again, brought electricity to the sod-roofed tac house. What wouldthe original homesteader think of our modern ways? Lisatook the plunge and abandoned the safety of Vonnie Mae forthe excitement of Meechum. Perhaps her "bedside manner"soothed th~ spry young colt.

THE ABSAROKA TREKS

working together--on a fire.

Encouraged by the success of last year's venture into exten-sive backpacking, we once again hit the high country. CarrieHollingsworth, no doubt closely supervised by her faithfulcompanion, Dreamer, organized two thirty-day trips--one tothe Northern Absarokas and one to the Beartooths. The firsttrek included Geoff Flickinger (as the resident chef), LizRemsen, Adrianne de Polo, Debby Moore, Charlotte Spang, and Dan Pierce. The second trek included Geoff again (butfired by a unanimous vote as resident chef), Betsy Pierce, LeeTakai, and Brian Ganley (who won the first annual Beartoothfishing contest.) This summer, even more than last, thesefolks took Elk Creek to places we had never been.

arguing together--over onion chips?

We've got them now. They're circling the wagons!

Not now, Anne dear.

THE SUMMER OF 1978 WAS ...

"Jingle Bells," 'Twas the Night Before Christmas," "SilentNight," and other carols on the last, long, cold, snowy milesinto Upper Dead Indian ... Dan showing his appreciation ofscenic Yellowstone and majestic Tower Falls in his own uni-que way ... Lili doing her very own imitation of Charo .the Second Annual Dead Indian Meadows baseball game--not exactly a "no hitter" ... the daily Tumbleweed andAndrew show, and the daily TLCa' la' Francaise ... Carriemeeting her first real, live grizzly Bear--and not being eaten.(We are still wondering where her ferocious guard dog end-ed up during the encounter.) ... Can you imagine Liz andAnnabel not fighting, Becky not smiling, Laurence notfeeding oats to Friday, or Steve being enthusiastic about theirrigation? ... Betsy's version of "Here comes the Sun" ...

our new, General Moore, clothes washer

the ambush of the first caravan, with Tod doing her imitationof Dr. Kildaire's first, and last, patient ... the night Molly andRob missed the slide show, which wasn't X-rated ... "mar-vy, simply marvy" ... Kung Fu, Chumby, Saturday NightFever Hammer being corraled and subdued by Annie ...Betsy Pierce buying "Play Girl" at the General Store in CookeCity--and this is a proper, down East, Dana Hall-educatedyoung lady? ... the Beartooth trek and their fishing contest--who would have thought that Dreamer could cast a fly thatwell? ... the Shangrila backpackers--starting the day inshorts and T-shirts; spending the day fighting their waythrough a blizzard; and ending the day cursing Hap for his"directions".

Just one more Red Sox fan who took a cold shower

Now all we're missing is Bert Parks!

C'mon Stormy, I wasn't that badl

Dead Indian Creek's version of Muscle Beach Party?

the mud-Thatch strikes again, and again, and.

Esther gives up hope of ever explaining to Ham the secret ofstarting a John Deere.
