The Annual All-Day program at City of Hope

earlier this month was excellent. As usual, we had

a strong turnout and the feedback received so far

has been positive. We want to thank our

Administrator, Rossana Desrochers, for an

exceptional job in organizing this event for the

second year in a row. The All-Day Program

continues to improve under her guidance.

Congratulations, Rossana, on a job well done!

We would also like to thank our guest

speakers, John Goldblum, MD (Cleveland Clinic),

Carrie Inwards, MD (Mayo Clinic) and Leann Seeger,

MD (UCLA) for their engaging presentations.

One of the highlights of the January

program is the presentation of the LASOP Lifetime

Achievement Award. The sole recipient for 2011

was Dr. Samuel French, renowned liver pathologist,

and current Chief of Anatomic Pathology at Harbor-

UCLA Medical Center. The award was presented to

Dr. French by Dr. Najeeb Alshak, Treasurer of the

Society, and fellow liver pathologist. In his brief

acceptance speech, Dr. French thanked his wife,

the Society, and the supporters behind this award,

for which he was honored and humbled to have

been selected. Dr. Jerry Chu, now Past President,

was also presented with an award plaque by our

new President, David Cassarino, in recognition of

his outstanding leadership over the Society.

Next month, on February 8th

, we welcome

Dr. Mahul B. Amin, Chairman of the department at

Cedars-Sinai, for a discussion of germ cell tumors

of the testis. As always, we invite all of you to join

us for what is certain to be a comprehensive,

detailed, and inspiring presentation by an

international expert in genitourinary pathology.

Please mark your calendars and join us on

the 8th

. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Thanks for joining us last month for an excellent presentation on Testicular Germ Cell Tumors by Dr. Mahul Amin, Chairman of the Department of Pathology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. On behalf of Dr. Amin and Cedars, we want to remind you of the upcoming “What’s New in Anatomic Pathology and Laboratory Medicine” conference held annually in the spring. This year’s 2-day conference falls on April 1-2 and features guest speaker Stuart J. Schnitt, MD of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. For more details about this conference, please see the full-page advertisement on page 5. Also approaching us this spring is the annual Resident/Fellow Symposium to be held in May. Submissions are invited from residents and fellows at all of the regional training programs (USC, UCLA, Cedars-Sinai, Harbor-UCLA, Loma Linda, and UCI). The format is similar to that of the case presentations at the spring and fall slide seminars. The deadline for submission is March 31st. The selected cases are first presented as unknowns prior to the meeting (online at the LASOP website or PathXchange). At the May 11th meeting, the diagnoses are revealed and the residents will present the background literature on their cases. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top presentations. For more details, please see page 6. For our next academic program, we are pleased to have Dr. Lawrence Weiss of City of Hope return to the LASOP for an update on Hodgkin Lymphoma. Please join us for this engaging and informative presentation. We look forward to seeing you March 8th!

It features extensive coverage of non-neoplastic lymphoid lesions and non-lymphoid lesions, as well as discussing all malignant lymphomas and other neoplasms that may involve lymph nodes in both adult and pediatric populations. The orientation is unique, as the text not only showcases various disease entities but also portrays the progression of disease states from incipient to advanced. Finally, the author emphasizes differential diagnosis, covering all of the methods used in distinguishing different easily confused entities.

Be sure to include in the body of your email all of your contact information. #1: The first PPT would be a "virtual slide" file that LASOP members would review before the meeting. This PDF presentation should include: * Page 1 - Your name and program affiliation * Page 2 - Pertinent patient history and symptoms * Pages 3+ - Images of the case (Note: Do NOT include the final diagnosis). #2: The second PPT would be a "handout" that would be posted to the LASOP website directly after the meeting. This PDF presentation should include: * Page 1 - Your name and program affiliation * Page 2 - Pertinent patient history and symptoms * Pages 3+ - Images of the case PLUS the final diagnosis, discussion of any differentials and all references. Additional guidelines: ● It is the responsibility of the author(s) to ensure that the identity of a patient is not apparent from the information contained in a case report.

● Use conventional units of measurement throughout the manuscript, with conversion factors for Systeme International (SI) units expressed once in parentheses after the first mention of the conventional unit. Example: "The blood glucose concentration of 126 mg/dL (to convert to millimoles per liter, multiply by 0.0555) was used as a criterion for diagnosing diabetes." If several laboratory values are listed, conversion factors may be listed in a paragraph at the end of the Materials and Methods or Report of a Case section. In tables and figures, conversion factors should be presented in the footnote or legend. Hematologic values should only be reported using conventional units. ● Use generic names of drugs, unless the specific trade name of a drug used is directly relevant to the discussion. ● Do not use abbreviations in the title or abstract, and limit their use in the text. ● When using acronyms, make certain the full name is spelled out on first use. ● Give sources (name of company and location) for all special reagents (eg, antibodies, enzymes, probes). ● In listing references, follow AMA style, abbreviating names of journals according to Index Medicus. ● Authors are responsible for the accuracy of references.

Deadline for submissions is March 31, 2011.

If selected, you will be contacted by the meeting's organizer by April 15, 2011.

Thank you for joining us last month for the Spring Slide Seminar presented by Kaiser Permanente. As usual, this seminar is one of our most popular academic programs of the year and we were delighted to see great attendance from the community. We continue next month with another slide seminar, the Annual Resident & Fellow Symposium, to be held on May 10th. Please join us this time in support of our junior members. At this time, we would like to remind our members about annual dues. For those who have not yet paid, we kindly ask that you please do so at your earliest convenience. These dues enable us to invite expert speakers from all over the country and are necessary to support our academic programs, including the December Buffet Dinner and January All-Day Program. Moreover, we would like to make a special appeal to our members that they consider making an additional gift to the Society as Patron ($100), Supporting ($50), or Sustaining ($25) voluntary supporters. We are especially grateful for these generous gifts that greatly benefit the academic mission of our Society. In addition, donations may be made to the LASOP Educational Fund for any amount of your choice. Dues payments and/or gifts may be made via the LASOP website at the following: http://www.lasop.org/pgs/payments.htm. We look forward to seeing you at our next monthly meeting!

The pathologic features are extensively detailed with descriptions of the macroscopic features, microscopic findings, cytopathology (as indicated), and as needed, ancillary studies. The latter include histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, molecular diagnostics and ultrastructural findings. Each entity is enhanced by superior medical images, including gross and microscopic pathology, a wide range of pathology stains, and detailed medical illustrations. In addition, you’ll find cancer staging and specimen examination protocols—one of the most useful hallmarks of the series—plus detailed immunohistochemistry panels. This state-of-the-art volume will guide the reader through the intricacies of head and neck pathology to provide the information required in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of head and neck pathology.

Profiles in Pathology

Arno A. Roscher, M.D.

College: Rupprecht-Oberrealschule-Gymnasium, Munich, Germany – 1948 Medical School: Ludwig-Maxilian University, Munich, 1949 – 1954 (Magna Cum Laude) Residencies: Anatomic Pathology, Duval Medical Center (1956-57), and St. Vincent’s Hospital (1957-58), Jacksonville, Florida; and Clinical Pathology, Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia, (1958-60) Richmond, VA Fellowship: Teaching Fellow, Clinical Pathology, Commonwealth University, Medical College of Virginia (1958-60), Richmond, VA

Dr. Arno Roscher always likes to acknowledge that he was born in Albert Einstein’s birthplace, Ulm Germany and the home of the Ulmer Munster, the world’s largest Gothic Cathedral, towering 483 feet. It was erected in the mid-14th century, and is considered a cultural, scientific and architectural wonder.

Dr. Roscher’s vocation began in surgery and culminated in surgical and clinical pathology. His medical career has spanned more than 50 years and he is extensively recognized as an innovative author and presenter of scientific papers covering topics in radiation pathology, surgical oncology, cardiac revascularization pathology associated with aorto-coronary bypass procedures, laser pathology and hematological subjects like idiopathic thrombocytopenic pupura, i.e. Moscovich Syndrome, described by the Doctor bearing its name in 1924.

In addition to a multitude of scientific papers and presentations, Dr. Roscher co-authored with Dr. Eugene Jussek a seminal paper "Critical Review of Contemporary Cellular Therapy” (Cell Therapy) which first appeared in the prestigious American Journal of Gerontology in 1970. This highly influential paper described for the first time in an American medical journal the birth of cell therapy in Europe in the 1930’s and outlined the use of ‘embryonal cells’ for therapeutic transplantation in many different animal models as well as patients with very diverse diseases. The relatively recent discovery of human embryonic stem cells in 1998 has refocused attention to this paper because it allows re-interpretation of the earlier research: Human embryonic stem cells are the only cell type that can give rise to all types of fetal and adult stem cells. It is now clear that the 'embryonal cells' described in Dr. Jusseks and Dr. Roschers review are in fact a mixture of fetal and early adult stem cells that have the capacity to integrate into many different types of injured tissues and organs.

Throughout his career, Dr. Roscher held several leadership roles, serving as Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at two distinguished Los Angeles area hospitals: Granada Hills Community Hospital and the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital. In addition, he was a California state licensee in nuclear medicine and served as co-director in the department of nuclear medicine at Granada Hills Community Hospital in the mid 1970’s.

Also during this time, Dr. Roscher was a Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner.

.

Since 1969, Dr. Roscher has produced 33 annual medical/surgical symposia at Granada Hills Community Hospital, which was co-sponsored by the California State University, Northridge (CSUN), the University of California, Irvine (UCI), the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). During his active practice, he also served as a Laboratory Inspector for the College of American Pathology, servicing hospitals throughout the United States. Respected and admired by his peers, the U.S. section of the International College of Surgeons in 1999 awarded Dr. Roscher the title of Emeritus Fellow in Cancun, Mexico at its National Meeting. In 2004, it awarded him its most prestigious honor—Honorary Fellowship. He received a “gold medal” at a cap and gown ceremony during the annual meeting of the US, Canadian, Mexican and Central American Sections of the International College of Surgeons, held on a lecture cruise to Alaska. Since 1968, Dr. Roscher has served the International College of Surgeons, whose membership hails from 110 countries around the world, in the following positions: Secretary, President, and Five-year Regent of the California section; elected “Outstanding Regent” of the California section in 1982 at the National meeting of the US section of the ICS in Atlantic City; elected World Governor from 1990 to 2006), and International Vice President for the parent body of the College (2006-2008). Dr. Roscher currently is the associate editor for the Journal of the International College of Surgeons; and Journal of Cardiac Surgery. Since 1971, he has served on the clinical faculty at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California (USC) in the positions of Assistant, Associate and Clinical Professor. He is also Emeritus Pathologist of the College of American Pathology; and the Los Angeles Society of Pathology. In addition, Dr. Roscher is an Honorary Staff Member with Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital and Valley Presbyterian Hospital, in the Los Angeles County area. At present, Dr. Roscher is involved in the production of an exhibit, bearing his name, featuring genetics in surgery and medicine at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago.

Local Literary Luminaries: A Monthly Feature of Member Authors

“Many laboratory medicine texts cover aspects of laboratory administration, but this is the most comprehensive in coverage and practical in approach I have seen,” said Luke Perkocha, MD, MBA, FCAP, Associate Director of Surgical Pathology, University of California, San Francisco. “Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on the importance of pathologist leadership in diverse practice settings ranging from the small anatomic pathology group practice to the large clinical laboratory.” The Program Directors Section of the Association of Pathology Chairs and the Academy of Clinical Laboratory Physicians and Scientists proposed model curricula and suggested competencies in laboratory management. Laboratory Administration for Pathologists encompasses the proposed curricula and addresses all aspects of laboratory management, emphasizing the specific role and responsibility of the pathologist in directing the laboratory. “The book includes in-depth information about clinical and anatomic pathology laboratory administration,” said Elizabeth Wagar, MD, FCAP, the publication’s co-editor, and Professor and Chair, Department of Laboratory Medicine, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Houston. “Our team wrote and edited it to provide pathologists with management and leadership fundamentals.” Some of the topics covered include: • Management principles • Competencies and interfaces of the involved pathologist • Equipment, supplies, and laboratory information systems • Quality management in laboratory medicine and anatomic pathology • Laboratory laws and regulations and legal affairs for pathologists. Dr. Wagar co-edited the book with Richard Horowitz, MD, FCAP, Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and Gene Siegal, MD, PhD, FCAP, Director, Division of Anatomic Pathology, University of Alabama at Birmingham. “It will serve as an excellent quick reference tool for a multitude of administration topics and as a refresher for management for maintenance of certification,” Dr. Horowitz said. “The book especially targets pathologists in training and young pathologists starting their careers,” Dr. Siegal added. “Residents will find it invaluable for board preparation and in rotations related to management training.” For more information and to order a copy of Laboratory Administration for Pathologists, visit www.cap.org/cappress or call 800-323-4040, option 1.
