OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD

My vacation finally began on Thursday after an unusualweek of six funerals. We continue to pray for all thegrieving families and know that in His goodness, God

will bring each of them his consolation and peace. My homebase is the family house in Toms River. From there, I willvisit nearby Seaside, Lavalette, Manasquan and Island Beach. When Monsignor Weber heads to Long Beach Island, I willbunk with him. Right now, he is holding down the fort whileI am gone.

My time away makes me think of the cherished andhappy vacations of my childhood. We never really left home.Vacations during my dad’s time off from work took us to anew place every day. The idea of travel for recreation was aluxury that only rich people could afford in the 1960s. A fewfamilies on my block left home for their summer cabin on anearby lake, but we LaMortes had a great time at my cousinBobby’s above-ground pool right around the corner; visits toDavies Lake, Anthony Wayne, Lake Welch, Requa Lake righthere in the county; Blue Mountain, Mohansic and Glen Islandin Westchester; and Orchard Beach, City Island, Jones Beach, and a tiny seashore in Throgs Neck next to the Bronx Beach. And there were special rides to Jones Beach, Rye Playlandwith the altar boys, Palisades Amusement Park, YankeeStadium, Freedomland, and the 1964 New York World’s Fair.Once I got older, my parents allowed me to take the bus withmy friends to the pool at Tibbetts Brook where we would besmitten with our female classmates in their modest bathingsuits (we only saw them in Catholic School uniforms). Therewere many potential wives among those girls (only in ourdreams). We had a great time. It was the simplicity thatmade those summers special and I wouldn’t trade it.

I hope you get the chance to spend extra time withyour family, ignore the alarm clock, sit longer at the tableafter supper in conversation, read some books, renewfriendships and get in a nap or two. It is not fair that somefolks have jobs that do not allow much time off or do nothave the extra money to enjoy a few extra frills. But,vacations are really a sabbath. God rested and so do we. Oursouls need refreshment, too. Days off can be times of dailyMass, more prayer and reflection.

Grateful for the time I have away (to also celebratemy 67th birthday) and for all of you, I also look forward to myreturn at the end of the week.

Father LaMorte

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OFADULTS is the Church’s way to initiatenew adult members through a processof total formation of the person andinvolves doctrinal (believing with the

Church community); practical (living with the Churchcommunity); liturgical (praying with the Church community),and apostolic formation (service with the Church community).Topics discussed include Scripture, the Mass, God the Father,Son and Holy Spirit, Church history and structure, Mary andthe Saints, sin and Reconciliation, conscience and moraldecision making, Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Anointingof the Sick, Marriage, Holy Orders, ministry, and social justice. This process is for adults who have never been baptized; adultsbaptized in another Christian faith tradition who are interestedin the Catholic tradition; baptized adult Catholics who wish toprepare to receive First Eucharist and Confirmation; non-Catholics who want to learn more about Catholic Christianity;Catholics who may have been away from the Church for aperiod of time. RCIA shares information about the CatholicChurch, but the decision to join the Catholic Church is madethrough personal discernment. We meet once a week onWednesday evenings from September through PentecostSunday (May 20, 2018); and during and after 9:30 Sundaymorning Mass. If you’re interested, inquire at the parish office.

GOING INTO THE HOSPITAL? Prior to entering the hospital, please call the parish office requesting the Sacrament of theAnointing of the Sick. It would be appropriate to give thisblessing at one of the weekday Masses, if a person is capableof attending so that the community may join their prayers aswell. Frequently, families wait too long until the person is inthe hospital and restricted from food consumption. Therefore, they’re unable to receive Holy Viaticum. Make sure thehospital knows you are a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo andthat the chaplain has been invited to visit.

ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN willtake place on Tuesday, August 15. It isone of the Church’s Holy Days ofObligation to attend Mass when Catholicpeople celebrate the assumption of the

Blessed Mother into heaven. The liturgy will be offered hereat St. Gregory at 7:00 AM (for those who must leave early forwork), 9:00, and 7:30 PM (for those returning from work). Ifyou are a lay minister, reader or altar server and can assist, callthe parish office or sign up in the narthex after Mass.

RENEW+REBUILD PLEDGES By keeping current with yourpledge promise, you are ensuring that our parish is able tocomplete the projects outlined in our promotion. When youreceive your reminders, we do appreciate your promptresponse. Thank you.

If you are reading “me” in church, please take “me” home or place“me” back at the church doors, not in the pews. Thank you.

NATURAL FAMILY PLANNING AWARENESS This week highlights the anniversary of the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae (July 25) whichbeautifully articulates respect for God’s design for authentic love through the gift of human sexuality, conjugal love and responsibleparenthood. It also marks the feast of Saints Joachim and Anne (July 26), the parents of the Blessed Mother. Married couples whouse NFP report many benefits: better communication, increased emotional maturity, deeper understanding of each other’s bodies andgrowth and respect for Gods’ gift of fertility. For NFP resources visit www.usccb/nfp.org or www.nyfamilylife.org/natural-family-planningor contact [email protected].

WEDDING OF THE SEA Last year, we introduced this beautiful and simple ceremony on the banks of the HudsonRiver at the fishing dock right behind the swimming pool at Bowline Point Town Park. It is a custom in manycoastal regions of the United States and Europe to have this special blessing of the sea or ocean or river or lake ona day near the feast of the Assumption (Ferragosto). This originated in 15th century Italy when Bishop Paul Barbo

who later became Pope Paul II was returning by ship from Venice to Cervia during a storm. He prayed and threw his pastoral ring intothe sea from the ship – and the waters were calmed. In our time, a wreath is thrown into the sea from a boat to commemorate thering of long ago. This blessing includes traditional prayers with a statue of the Blessed Mother, followed by the distribution of holywater and a simple reception. Town Supervisor Howard Phillips Jr. and Father will perform the symbolic tossing of the ceremonialwreath. This ceremony represents the “wedding” of the town and the Hudson River created by God in proximity to each other andblessed by His love and protection. This will be our second voyage. Hope you can join us on Sunday, August 13.

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL Many people enjoy having quiet time, personal time, with the God theylove. Lots of good decisions and renewed commitment come from being quiet with Jesus, especially during EUCHARISTIC

ADORATION. We invite you to be present for this time while the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on our altar. This may proveto be a most peaceful and rewarding hour for you. If there is anyone who wishes to be a guardian and a partner forEucharistic Adoration, please look at these vacant hours. If you wish to be a substitute for the summer months, we canuse your participation as well. Interested? Call 203-253-8565.

PARISH GYMNASIUM Each year at this time, to prepare for the coming season, the floor of the parish gym is refinished. During thesefinal weeks of summer, the gym will be unavailable for use from August 1 through September 6.

ALTAR FLOWER MEMORIALS are donated for the Sunday Masses to remember a loved one or for a special intention. Youmay call the parish office (947-1873) to arrange for a memorial basket. The donation is $50. Reservation cards are alsoin the narthex.

PLANS FOR PARISH SWIMMING POOL SCRAPPED! After much study, our finance committee has determined it would not be feasibleto construct an indoor swimming pool in our church. Among other things, they report, it would interfere with the valuable work nowbeing performed each Sunday by our ushers, who have enough difficulty navigating the aisles without doing it in flippers and a lifevest. As a result, we can now announce with certainty that those who have been arriving for Mass as if dressed for the pool need notdo so. Also, we hope to keep the air conditioning cranking all summer long. So you do not need to wear shorts, halter tops or bikinisto Mass.

COME TO THE BALLOON FESTIVAL and help raise funds for the regional school and sports programs. This Friday from 1:00 to 9:30PM at Solberg Airport in Readington, NJ. Tickets are $30 and $10 will be donated back to us. Festival includes concerts (Laurie Berknerat 1:30), fireworks, food, the 100 hot air balloon launch and entertainment. This is a great family activity. For information, contactLou Pastina at 917-658-0188 or email [email protected].
