Introduction P a g e | i

Introduction When the second volume of Mattingly and Sydenham's Roman Imperial Coinage was published in 1926 it was still predominantly based upon the scholarship of Henry Cohen who had published his great work in the mid to late nineteenth century. And although RIC made a few corrections to the coins recorded by Cohen, and a few additions from major auction sales, the ordering of the catalogue was still archaic with its concentration upon alphabetic arrangement of coins by reverse legend, and the complete separation of gold and silver issues from their base-metal contemporaries. The newer volumes of RIC, as the result of nearly a century's additional scholarship, now group issues by mint and by the changes in titulature, with precious and base metal issues of the same period being grouped together so that they can be comprehended as a whole. In the following catalogue, I have endeavoured to compile a list of all the Imperial issues of Nerva, and arrange them into a, hopefully, meaningful and helpful order. Such listings cannot be complete as new coins emerge all the time, and I do not have access to the more obscure items of numismatic literature, however, I hope that these listings will be a contribution to the study of Roman coinage. Issues included in earlier catalogues but now regarded as doubtful or uncertain have been included with appropriate comment for the purposes of completeness. And as ever, I would welcome any comments, corrections, or additional items for inclusion.

Arrangement P a g e | iv

Arrangement The occasion of producing these lists has presented the opportunity to modify the arrangement of the issues. As before the primary grouping is by obverse legends and their associated groups of reverse legends.

e.g. 2a. IMP NERVA CAES AVG PONT MAX TR P / COS II DESIGN III P P or 3a. IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P / descriptive

Ideally, I would have liked to include, where appropriate, precious metal and aes coinages on the same lists, but the range of obverse types, and the variations of reverse types between the two meant that the lists grew too unwieldy for practical use. So, each of the previous groups could be divided: i. Aurei and denarii

ii. Sestertii, dupondii and asses Within this structure the overall arrangement is as follows: level example

Obverse legend IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P

Reverse legend CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM

Reverse type Clasped hands.

Denomination D = Denarius

Obverse type La = Laureate head r. The examples on this page are typical and do not necessarily represent a specific issue. Not all groupings / levels occur for every issue, and indeed some primary groupings consist of a single coin but the combination of legends and types warrants its separation from other issues. Any arrangement is to a greater or lesser extent arbitrary, and it must always be remembered that it represents modern numismatic convenience and not necessarily ancient mint policy, however, such an arrangement helps strike the difficult balance between separating issues into useful groupings and yet drawing similar issues together. Still, hoping this might prove useful . . .

Denominations P a g e | v

Denominations It has been decided not to include information in regard to the weights and dimensions for the coins listed in this catalogue. This is due to the variability in the availability of such information from internet auction and collectors’ sites as well as from older catalogues. However, it is possible to draw up a table of approximate dimensions and weights as a guide to the catalogue.

Denmination Diameter Weight

Aureus 18-19 mm 7.56 g

Quinarius Aureus 14 mm 3.68 g

Cistophorus 1 25-28 mm 10.06 g

Denarius 17-20 mm 3.29 g

Quinarius Denarius 2 14 mm 1.61 g

Sestertius (orichalcum) 32-36 mm 25.67 g

Dupondius (orichalcum) 27-29 mm 13.69 g

As (copper) 25-29 mm 11.19 g

Quadrans 15-19 mm 2.82 g

n.b. Weights and diameters are approximations; individual specimens may lie well outside these figures. The figures in the weights column are taken from BMCRE, vol. 3, pp.xv-xvi.

1 ‘Cistophorus’ is a modern term based on the common depiction of a ‘cista mystica’ on this denomination. Technically, they are tetradrachms, or multiples of three denarii; a piece minted only in the East to facilitate payments and a common unit of exchange between the Greek and Roman monetary standards. 2 Sometimes referred to as a Quinarius Argentaeus.

KG (Auction 236), 7.10.2013, lot 1028 = Dr Jacob Hirsch, Munich (Auction 30, Barron, Evans), 11.5.1911, pl. 27, 956. 3 RIC considered the B.M. specimen (R1922,0410.1) = BMCRE 132 as ‘not authentic. Possibly altered from FORTVNA AVGVST.’ Mattingly, however, having become aware of further specimens changed his mind, and in BMCRE accepted the type as genuine. G. de Loÿe, ‘Les as de Nerva au type “Neptuno”. . .’ in R.N. 1984, pp.95-103, has tabulated all known specimens and supports Mattingly’s latter decision. He further suggests that, though the style of the rev. suggests production at Rome, the coins have been mainly discovered in Britain, and the issue may have been struck specifically for local distribution. 4 Numismatica Ars Classica NAC AG (Auction 95), 6.10.2016, lot 203 = Gorny & Mosch Giessener Münzhandlung (Auction 122), 10.3.2003, lot 2079; also Auktionshaus H. D. Rauch GmbH (Auction 89), 5.12.2011, lot 1446. The Neptune facing type is apparently unrecorded and does not appear on any of the specimens recorded by de Loÿe which all show Neptune standing r. 5 BMCRE 113n describes a variant from Paris with obv. Lb – an error? These is no trace of drapery on the Paris coin illustrated in CBN. 6 Minor rev. variation: usually six wheat-ears, but rarely eight (see illustrated examples). Glendining & Co, London (Mayr-Harting), 15.11.1949 = Cayón p.436, 44, and possibly American Numismatic Society (1944.100.42655) (six ears). Bank Leu, Zurich & Munzen und Medaillen, Basel (Niggeler), 2.11.1967, lot 1196 = Cayón p.437, 45 (eight ears). 7 Doubtful. Cohen cites Jean Tristan, Commentaires historiques contenans l'histoire gendrale des Empereurs (1644), vol. 1, p.361. A. Merlin, ‘Le Grand Bronze De Nerva - TVTELA ITALIAE’ in R.N. 1906, pp.298-301, following the lead of Ernest Babelon, has discussed this piece and gives the reasons for doubting its existence: firstly, Tristan gives no source for his report of the coin, nor has the piece been seen before or since; secondly, the rev. legend is shown retrograde contrary to the consistent practice on Nerva’s coinage; thirdly, Tristan includes descriptions of several coins that are false and appear to have been invented to illustrate passage from ancient sources he is quoting, and this piece ideally suits the quote from Aurelius Victor it accompanies; and finally, the legend is otherwise unattested on imperial coinage, and both it and the design are probably based upon the TVTELA AVGVSTI asses of Vespasian (RIC2 282). The coin must, therefore, be regarded as false and a product of the 16th or 17th century desire to furnish numismatic confirmation of the ancient sources. 8 Minor rev. variation: shafts of cart angled r. or l. (see illustrated examples).

PAX AVGVST, from the Gosselin sale, but Rollin & Feuardent, Paris (Gossellin) 7.3.1864, lot 645 actually gives rev. PAX AVGVSTI. RSC is probably correct in ascribing both to misreporting of the Vienna coin.
