LIN EA L descendants of the gods they declared themselves. ProudPharaohs. Vain, not because they were leaders of men, but be'cause through their veins coursed the blood of immortals. Ra,

the god of the sun; Osiris, god of light; and Isis, the beautiful, orig-inator of the arts, were their progenitors. A token had to be given menby which they at all times would know that they were in the presenceof a work of the mighty Pharaoh. So for the first time in history, theneed for a personal seal arose. A scarabaetus (small native beetle)adopted a» the symbol of immortality, was inscribed on its under-surface with the name of the Pharaoh and that of his Divine ancestor.These inscriptions were in hieroglyph, the first writing of man. Uponall important papyrus scrolls and documents was this seal impressed.The custom spread; the crude scarabs were mounted on narrow silver and gold bands, to be worn upon the finger, and became the world'sfirst jewelry.

Today, from Cairo, Egypt, we have received an assortment of selectedscarabs, similar to those worn by the ancients, and we have had themmounted on rings as of yore. The rings are exact duplicates of originalsto be seen in the Egyptian Museum of AMORC. The design shown inthe illustration consists of the entwined cobra, the sign of royalty, andthe scarab is mounted on a swivel, so that the mysterious hieroglyphicsunderneath may be seen. Noth ing so breathes the exotic and mysteriousair of the Ancient East as these rings.

The picture was taken just after a mystical ceremony had been conducted before the Sphinx. Immediately afterw ard these members,riding upon the camels and donkeys, journeyed westward into the great desert space to spend a night under the starlit heavens as guests of a sheik in his magnificent tents, while mystic ceremonies were conducted at midnight, accompan ied by music given by native musicians. THOUGHT OF THE MONTHDISCOVERING NEW WORLDS

M O N G the manyhistorical eventswhich distinguished the month of O c t o b e r i s o n ewhich is celebrated in several countries and is knowni n t h e U n i t e dStates as Columbus day. This anniversary falls onSaturday. October 12, this year.

The story of Columbus and his discoveries, as reported in the school histories and in the popular encyclopedias,is so erroneous in all important detailsthat were it not for its fairy story nature which appeals to the youthful andsatisfies adults longing for adventureand romance, it would have been alteredlong ago. For many years various uncovered records and historical documents have pointed out the errors in thepopular account, but since there is nocommercial profit to be gained by revising the story and discarding millionsof dollars worth of books, the whole fictitious story of the life and death of 

Columbus remains.There is ample evidence in records

still preserved in Spain and Portugal,and in some museums throughout theworld, to prove that Columbus was nota poor man, nor a mere adventurer seeking only certain commercial or mercenary benefits for his people an dothers. Nor was his name actually thatwhich is attributed to him. Nor was heof a family whose humble position inthe world supported the other elementsof the romance.

Columbus was the son of a man whohad been knighted and whose heraldicarms were recorded in several countries,

and who was learned and highly respected. and held not only a high socialposition but a very close contact withroyalty. The son, too. was knighted andinherited the heraldic peerage of hisfather. He was learned not only in theart of navigation, but in many sciences,and particularly in ancient sciences andmystical arts.

It is generally overlooked by historicalwriters that Columbus was the author of a number of books on mystical philosophy, and having naught to do withnavigation, and these are still in existence and preserved. O f importance tous is the fact that he became a knightof the Order of the Temple, an affiliation of the Rosicrucian Brotherhood,and like many other eminent mysticsand philosophers w h o had been ad mitted to the Knighthood of the Templehe wrote and left as a heritage a number of m y s t i c a l manuscripts in mysticalcipher. Fo r over a century researchershave been puzzled by the mystical emblems and signature which Columbusadded to his regular signature on the

personal records of his journeys anddiscoveries, and which have been preserved for posterity. How ever, as soonas one becomes acquainted with his realname, his former place of residence, hisaffiliations and interests, the mysticalemblems attached to his signature, hiscipher codes and his other writings become understandable.

Furthermore, Columbus did not arbitrarily decide to make an adventure onthe seas for the purpose of finding ashorter and better means of internation

have explored man’s inner nature, andthe benefits that have come through our discovery of God, His spiritual laws,and the Divine principles of life.

Another important anniversary duringthe month of October is that which may

be celebrated on the 17th of the month,for it was on this day of the year 1927that the first passenger crossed the Atlantic in an airplane, thus showing howman can conquer other domains thanthose that are on the earth. The gradualmastership of the air is one of our present-day feats, and some day willconstitute an interesting and importantpoint in history. W e find that the 27thof the month is the anniversary of thebirth of Theodore Roosevelt, the reallygreat American born in 1858. The 16th

of the month is the anniversary of theunfortunate execution of Marie Antoinette in 1793. Sar ah Bernhardt wa s bornon the 22nd of the month in the year 1845. It is ridiculously claimed by certain ecclesiastical histories that on the28th of October 4004 B. C., Adam, thefirst man was born. This strange statement was officially established in theBritish Empire by an act of the BritishParliament . Also, on the 28th of themonth we have the anniversary of theunveiling of the Statue of Liberty in the

year 1886. And this is the month inwhich the so-called Indian Summer of the United States gradually manifestsitself if we are to have any Indian Summer at all. Students and those interested in schools and universities of 

learning will be interested in knowingthat on the 20th of October in 1896 theso-called College of New jersey celebrated its 150th anniversary and adopted its new name of Princeton University. Therefore, this month it will celebrate its 189th year of existence. Har vard University held its first commencement on October 9, 1642. Therefore,this month we can celebrate the 293rdanniversary of that event. It was on the15th of October, 1582, that the Gregorian Calendar was adopted with all

of its fallacies and inconsistencies, andyet we hesitate to make the proper changes because of the many routinematters that would be disarranged or disorganized by a c h a n g e o f t h ecalendar.

At the end of this month we have theold mystical holiday called Hallowe’en,thus bringing the month to a close withthe beginning of a number of seasonalholidays that will keep us busy, andperhaps keep us happy until the first of 

- the new year.

Modern man, if he thinks about itat all, contemplates the universe withmixed emotions, because he is verymuddled about what he really thinksthe world is. He is heir to the thoughtsand knowledge of ALL his ancestors,and he takes a curious, varied selectionof them in order to paint his own real

ization of the universe.Cosmos is the Greek word for the

Universe; therefore, the word Co smology is a branch of metaphysicswhich treats of the science of the Universe as an orderly system. Strang e asit may be to make such a statement inthis 20th Century, we are no further advanced in actual knowledge of the Universe in a practical scientific way, thanwere our ancient forebears. True, wehave had many theories, each when

postulated and apparently proven, accepted by mankind in general as T H ES O L U T IO N . Some lasted centuries,others only a short time, but each hasbeen discarded for what seemed a morescientific and practical explanation.

In the Bible Moses expressly statesthat the Tabernacle set up in the wild

erness was a model of the Universe,and the writer of the Epistle to theHebrews affirms this statement; so thatinstead of wasting time taking measurements and making observations and doing mathematical sums, the FU N D A M E N T A L IS T learns his astronomyfrom reading the description of Moses’tabernacle.

Cosmas Indicopleutes, a writer of the6th century, wrote a book in Alexandriaknown as “A Christian TopographyEmbracing th e Who le World ,” inwhich he goes at length to prove thatthe Tabernacle of Moses is correct andthat the earth is a rectangular planetwice as long as it is broad. He wrotethis book after extensive travels whenhe became a monk, after having devotedhis early life as a merchant in whichcapacity he had visited the Indies, andin fact appeared to have lived for sometime in Ceylon. During his travel s hehad heard of the earth being in the formof a sphere and his book was to contradict this Pagan belief and uphold the

general belief of the civilized world thatthe Universe was flat. He states in hisbook, “The division of the Tabernacleinto two places, by means of a veil, typified the division of the Universe intotwo worlds—an upper and a lower, by

means of the firmament. Th e table of shew bread, again, w i t h its wavedborder, represented the earth surrounded by the ocean, while its other partsand the things on it symbolized someobject in the natural world. Now, as thetable was twice as long as it was broad,and was placed lengthwise from east towest, and breadthwise from north tosouth, from this we learn that the earthis rectangular as a plane, which extendsin length from east to west, and inbreadth from north to south, and is

twice as long as it is broad. Th e ocean,for the most part, is unnavigable, andwhile encompassing this earth of ours,is itself encompassed by another earth,which had been the seat of Paradise,and the abode of man until the Arkfloating upon the billows of the Flood,wafted Noah and his family over intothis earth of ours. Th e heavens comedownward to us in four walls, which attheir lower sides are welded to the four sides beyond the ocean, each to each.The upper side of the northern wall, atthe summit of heaven, curved round andover, till it unites with the upper side of the southern wall, and thus forms inshape an oblong vault, the canopy of heaven. This vast rectangular hall isdivided in the middle into two stories bythe firmament, which thus serves as aceiling for the lower story and a floor for the upper. Th e lower story is theworld, where men and angels have their abode until the Resurrection, and thestory above is heaven—the place of future estate.”

Cosmas further supports his contention through verses of the Bible, for inthe Psalms it is declared that the Creator had founded the earth on its ownstabili ty. In Job it is declared that Hehanged it on nothing. In Isaiah it saidthat while Heaven was His throne, the

T h e earth was His footstool. And finally heRosicrucian winds up with the proof of his cosmol-Digest ogy by saying that in Genesis it isOctober  averred that God made heaven and1935 earth and nothing besides them.

This belief that the earth was flatand not round was not, as is commonlythought, the postulation of the entirecivilized world, for we k n o w thatAristot le believed and stated that theworld was a SPH ER E . No man for 

centuries influenced the thought of theworld and of mankind generally to adegree that is the least comparable withAristotle. The earth, he said, was alarge sphere and the starry heaven amuch larger sphere revolving rapidlyaround the earth. The stars were fixedto this large sphere revolving upon itself and was carried around in 24 hours,which explained perfectly the risingand setting of most of the heavenlybodies. However, he likewise statedthat this did not apply to the Sun,

Moon and the planets, Saturn, Jupiter,Mars, Venus and Mercury. This wasso, he said, that when one observed theheavenly bodies it could be seen thatthese latter seven luminaries wanderedabout among the fixed stars. Therefore,he postulated that there were a number of hollow tubes, or rather hollow, transparent spheres all around the earth, andall of them having the same center asthe earth, two of them at times havingno body in them, but the third containing the luminaries and the planets. Thusfrom Aristotle's teaching, m a n k i n dactually believed there were fifty-fivehollow, transparent, concentric spheres,and as far as scientists were concernedthis wa s the universe. From this camethe occult statement that the spheresmoving against each other so harmoniously and under the direction of theDeity thus produced “ the music of thespheres.”

Ptolemy, who flourished about 135A. D., did not try to discover a real picture of heaven, as had Aristotle and hisfollowers of the world as a sphere, or those of the fundamentalists of the earthas a flat plane. He did not say, “ Thisis what the stars are; that is where theyare; this is the machinery that keepsthem in place and moving." But insteadhe said, “The stars have been observedto move from here to there and I thinkI will solve the puzzle by geometry.”He could use two ways that would bemathematically satisfactory to solve hisriddle. First, he could construct a series

of circles which account for the movements of the various planets and thetwo luminaries by supposing that theymoved in a circle around the earth, butwith the earth not exactly in the center.For, taking the Moon, as an example,if it moved in a circle with the earthat the exact center, her observed positions in the sky would not be explainable, and so as to explain the moon’seccentricities her path must be supposedto be ex-centric; that is, with the earthaw ay from the center. Or he couldsolve it in the second way. Supposethat instead of the moon itself goingaround the earth in a circle, it wentaround a circle of its own, the center of the latter circle being the earth itself.Ptolemy chose this second way of solv

ing his problem and by complicating thesystems of earlier astronomers produceda solution so exact that there was noway of showing it to be incorrect untilthe invention of telescopes. Th us histheory was that the earth was the center of the universe. H is theory was: “T heheavens is in the form of a sphere turning round on a fixed axis, as may beproved by the circumpolar stars and of the fact that other stars rise and set atthe same points of the horizon. Theearth is a sphere, situated in t h eC E N T E R of the Universe; if it werenot, one side of the heavens would appear nearer to us than the other, and thestar s would be larger there,— the earthis but a point in comparison with theheavens, because the stars appear to beof the same magnitude and at the samedistance inter se no matter where theobserver goes on the earth. It has nomotion of translation: first, becausethere must be some fixed point to whichthe motions of others may be referred;secondly, because the heavenly bodiesdescend to the center of the heavens

which is likewise the center of the earth.And if there was a motion, it would beproportionate to the great mass of theearth, and would leave behind it theanimals and objects thrown in the air.’’

In the Divine Comedy of Dante wesecure another cosmology, based somewhat, it is true, on the teaching of Aristotle and also on Ptolemy, butwhich had not only great weight withthose religiously inclined but formed apicture which has lasted to this day of 

the Universe, which was composed of Hell, Purgatory, Earth and Heaven.This description by Dante is as follows:“ In the center of all is the earth, whichis divided into a hemisphere of water and of earth and in the middle of theearth is Jerusalem. Above the hemisphere of water is Purgatory, on top of this is the earthy Paradise, while in thecenter of the earth is Hell. Above thewater is a realm of air, and above theair a realm of fire. Here Dan te tooknotice of the four known elements. Fire,Air, W ate r and Earth in his cosmology.Above the realm of fire started theplanes of the luminaries and planetseach in its own circle in the followingorder. The Moon, presided over by theAngels, then Mercury, Venus, the Sun,

Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, wherein theThron es had their abode. Above thecircle of Saturn was that of the Zodiacpresided over by the Cherubim and outside of the Zodiac was a larger circlewhich Dante called The Crystalline or Primum Mobile, which was ruled by theSeraphim. Then came a final spherewhich he called the Empyrean Paradisewherein dwelt God.

Until 1543 there was practically nochange in the view-point that the civilized world held of the formation of the

Universe than given above. Th e influence of Aristotle was the most potent,however, in considering the earth as thecentre of the Universe, and it was notuntil Copernicus who, as a student,seemed irritated by the poor reasonsgiven heretofore of the movements of the heavenly bodies, conceived the ideaof a Universe in which the earth insteadof being its center, was only an integralpart of the Universe, and that the earthand, in fact, all heavenly bodies revolved around the S U N which was thecenter of the Universe. Kepler, born in

1. That planets move in ELLIPSES,with the sun at one focus.

2. That the line joining the sun andthe planets sweeps with equal areas inequal time.

able to the cube of its mean distance tothe Sun.

About 1590, a young mathematicalprofessor, Galileo Galilei, having seena TELESCOPE in the possession of aDutchman, Lippershep, made one him

self, but on a vastly larger and improvedscale. Galileo in his many years of observation proved that the Copernicansystem was more in accordance withreality than the system of Ptolemy, andthus started a new system of cosmologythat is still in vogue at the present time.In the last few years this system of Copernicus is seen to be toppling, dueto the many important facts that arenow APPARENTLY being discoveredby a new batch of astronomers, physicists and mathematicians, of whom the

most important is the Einstein theory of relativity.All the above seems to prove the con

tentions of the Rosicrucians that mankind in general accepts a postulationwhich can apparently be proven satisfactorily to the greatest majority, untilsomething comes along that seeminglyis an improvement on the establishedmanner of thinking. If, however, our scientists would only turn their attention to that wonderful piece of machinery, known as the human body, and experiment with that squeezed down to

the dimension of a single cell, theymight come nearer to a conclusion of theform of the Universe; and that theDivine Mind made two Cosmic Laws inthe beginning: “All that exists in theUniverse, and that has life and thepower to maintain life, is in the form of 

a cell.” “ Th e Universe itself is a cell;the counterpart of the smallest cell, andthe smallest cell is a counterpart of theUniverse.” If, for instance, our scientists would think of a cosmology as related to the human body, they might

stumble on a theory that would onceand for all quiet their curiosity of theform and what the Universe may consist of. If they would devote their efforts to learning what might be termedC O S M I C M I N D and C O SM ICSPACE, there would open up to them anew vista and a new philosophy whichhas held the attention of the Rosicrucians for centuries and which has enabled the Order to have in its archivesknowledge through the investigationsof its members centuries ahead of the

so-called scientific revelations. T o omuch stress has been placed on theCosmos and not e n o u g h on theC O SM IC . T O O much stress has beenplaced on the formation of the UNIV E R S E and too little about the formation of MAN. Too much stress has beenplaced on so-called LOGIC instead of the fact that the UNIVERSE and allthat is contained therein is a DivinePlan, and a realization that DIVINITYpervading the Universe is an actualTRUTH. above the sidewalks. It was built in theearly days of the city's establishmentwhen the land around the church was

covered with green lawns and no homeor nearby structure was more than twostories high. There was an ambition onthe part of the people, however, to buildtheir homes with high gabled roofs andthis seemed to annoy the trustees of thechurch for they were fearful that in theyears to come someone might build athree or four story structure that mightrise to a height equal to half that of thechurch and thus take way from theglory of the spires that they thoughtreached almost to the heavens. So the

In an e a s t e r ncity of the UnitedStates there stands

in an open plaza a very old church withits spires rising several hundred feet

trustees succeeded in having the citypass an ordinance to the effect that aslong as the church and its spires remained standing no one could erect abuilding of any kind within a quarter mile of the church that reached above

the tip of the spires.As years passed by, the old ordinance

thus adopted was forgotten and thespace around the church became thicklysettled with magnificent buildings of modern architecture. Then a great hotelwas proposed and its plans were submitted to the city council for approval.After the approval was given, the hotelstructure was started and not until itwas ready to add and finish the upper floors did someone connected with thechurch recall the ancient law. Thematter was taken to court and thehotel was restrained from completingits upper floors and the city was forcedto pay indemnity to the hotel because itapproved of the plans. And there standstoday in this city this beautiful hotelwith its unfinished structure. It cannoteven add a proper cornice or finishingto the top floor for this would add eightor ten additional inches to the buildingand thus bring it above the tip of thespires of the church and, according tothe trustees of the church, this would bea sacrilege for nothing in that locality

must reach closer to God than the spiresof the church.Millions of human beings still measure

their closeness to God by their materialascendency in the worldly things of life. No doubt many sincere and devoted trustees of churches would beshocked if they could rise to some greatheight in an airplane and look downupon their cities and see how insignificant their churches appear to be. And

perhaps t h e y would be even moreshocked if they could view their edificesfrom the Cosmic point of view and discover that the sacred shrine in the formof a grotto deep beneath the surface of the earth was as close to God as the tip

of the highest cathedral spire in theworld.

It is said that Jesus was born in amanger and that this manger was beneath the surface of the earth. InPalestine today one visits this humblebirthplace by descending stone steps.Yet in that lowly place may be foundreal sacredness and devotion on thepart of multitudes f r o m hour to hour and day to day throughout the years.

It is not the physical a n d materialpart of man that must rise to contact

God or to attune with the spiritualrealm, but the inner self, that which isof God and with God eternally. It isthis consciousness and spiritual beingin man that must lift itself upward without limitations as to time and space tocloser contact with the mind and soul of God.

What Makes for Success in Rosicrucianism?

AN ADDRESS GIVEN AT THE 1935 CONVENTION IN

E M U ST consider  first just what ismeant by “successi n R o s i c r u c i a n ism.”

I n t r y i n g t omeasure one’s success in the Rosic ruc ian s tudie s ,each individual isnaturally liable touse as his measuring rod or gaugehis own standard

or version of success.Now, if those who come into the

Order seeking material gain and influence, or the betterment of their socialposition or environment, find after anumber of years of studying the Rosicrucian teachings that this has not beenaccomplished, they may feel that their success in Rosicrucianism has been verydisappointing.

On the other hand, there are thosewho affiliate with the Order purely because of a desire to open up to their consciousness an entirely new world of thought, who are desirous of learning

more about their own natures, of exploring the processes of mind, the functioning of their bodies, and their rela

tionship to the Universe, and the physical laws and forces of the Universe.With the influx of such wisdom intotheir consciousness, they feel that theyhave accomplished a great deal throughRosicrucianism, although perhaps societyand the world at large may look uponthem as total failures.

I often think of the early mystics andthe old scholastic monks who had themost frugal meals, often only a fewcrusts of bread and the cooling watersof some mountain stream with, literally

speaking, only a few rags to cover their nakedness, but whose wealth inwisdom, knowledge, and sympatheticunderstanding far surpassed the greatmaterial wealth of the merchant princesand kings of temporal power. Rosicrucianism h a s to offer knowledge a n dwisdom. It does not offer materialthings. They do not come directly, butthey may come indirectly as a resultof Rosicrucianism.

Now Rosicrucianism may be said tobe a fifty-fifty proposition; that is, it

will go half way. It will provide theknowledge and the understanding of Cosmic laws. The rest depends uponthe Rosicrucian.

As we said before, there are Rosicrucian students who are satisfiedmerely with the possession of thisknowledge. There are the others whoseek material possessions; they have aright to seek them also, but in seekingthese material manifestations they mustapply what Rosicrucianism has to give.Remember t h a t Rosicrucianism goesonly half way; it does not do all of the job for you. If it did, there would beno purpose in life and no point in experience. Rosicrucianism gives you themap and the tools, but you must digthe golden vein of material wealth; you 

must uncover the buried treasure.It is safe to say that fifty per cent of 

those who affiliate with the A M O R Cdo so because of their desire for knowledge, wisdom, and understanding, andthe other fifty per cent for materialbenefits. Now if all those who affiliatedfor material benefits were disappointedand became discouraged to the point of giving up the teachings, the Order would not have endured through thecenturies as it has.

The question, “What makes for success in Rosicrucianism,’’ might be answered very briefly in three words—patience, confidence, and application.You will note that I say confidencerather than use the word faith. Faith sooften means blind acceptance of whathas been told to us. The word con-fidence seems to carry with it a suggestion of effort. Truly faith without workis of no avail.

Very often we receive letters from thestudents saying that the monographsare intensely interesting; they are plainly written and easily understood. Theytell us they have no difficulty in understanding the principles, but they are unable to apply them in their own dailyaffairs. They are meeting with no sat isfactory results in the experiments andthey don't know what to do. They implore us to help them in some way todevelop “psychically .’’ There, I think,is one of the great stumbling blocks. Somany students, especially in the Neophyte degrees, are looking for spectacu

lar manifestations — phenomena. They,in some way, have gotten the idea thatin order to be a true mystic one shouldbe able, by the mere turn of the wristor through some peculiar posture or theutterance of some strange, weird-sound

ing incantation, to produce growingplants, live rabbits, five-dollar bills, andmany other material manifestations outof thin air in order to dumbfound their friends and gratify their own desire, notthat the power of mind if properly usedcould not assemble the necessary elements to form and produce a materialmanifestation if the occasion demandedand all conditions were right, but never as a pastime or for selfish purposes.

Sometimes a member will write expressing great appreciation and grati

tude for the benefits received and theknowledge imparted to him through hisweekly monographs. He may say, “Iam daily surprised at the clear insightI have and how easily I grasp andunderstand subjects and solve problemswhich a few years or even months agowould have ‘floored’ me. Life has takenon an entirely different meaning: eventhe grass and flowers look different;the heavens above are filled with meaning, my disposition is improved, I havemore tolerance of others’ opinions and

shortcomings; my health is better thanit has been for years; I am attractingfriends of culture and the type I love toassociate with. I am finding that life isbecoming so full that time never hangson my hands any more— B U T I have no psychic experiences. I have no resultswhatever with any of the experimentsand initiation rituals, and I guess I am

 just hopeless when it comes to ‘psychic’development.’’ Now what in the worlddo you suppose such a student is expecting and what is his understandingof “psychic development?” Let us look

at the origin and meaning of the word,“ psychic.” It comes from a Greek wordmeaning “of the soul; of or pertainingto the soul or mind; mental contrastedwith the physical.”

Now. wouldn’t you say that a student who is becoming aware of an inner change, a broader, more tolerant outlook on life— a member who is findinghis mental faculties of comprehension,intuition, and perhaps memory, keener and quicker in serving him — who is

aware of a change for the better in hisdisposition and health, is developingpsychically?

The experiments with which you areworking in your home sanctums or in

lodges and temples are for the purposeof teaching you to direct vour thoughtvibrations for a definite purpose. Someexperiments are merely for the purposeof proving a law or principle in themonograph, but you may be sure thatwhenever you devote your time and attention to any of these experiments insincerity and with an earnest desire toaccomplish their purpose and contactthe inner self and its powers, you setinto action certain vibrations which affect the sympathetic nervous system andstir and start into action certain nervecenters and glands which we havecalled psychic centers because they havebeen found to have a definite functionwith regard to the mind and soul. Acontinuation of these exercises strengthens these vital glands and prepares thebody to transform and interpret thepsychic vibrations that are registeredupon it. Remember, that the more sensitive the sympathetic nervous systembecomes, the more developed the psychic centers are, the more perfect willbe your reception of Cosmic Conscious

ness which will finally bring to youcomplete understanding and illumination.

It is not only the beginner on thePath who may not grasp the real purpose and make a successful use of theprinciples of Rosicrucianism. Some timeago we received a letter from a member who had completed the Ninth Degree,saying he wished to drop out because,for one thing, he had been waiting patiently for the “ Lost W or d" to be revealed to him as was promised in the

beginning and referred to many times,which promise, he said, had not yet beenfulfilled. Now it seems almost unbelievable that a member could have completed the Ninth Degree without havingan understanding of the “ Lost W or d”and its meaning. After considerable effort we succeeded in pointing out to thestudent in question that there is no secret formula, no magic word or group of words which might be repeated whenever one wished to bring about a certain condition or realize his desires in

life, but that the gradual awakening andrealization of his own inner, creativepowers which have been lost to himthrough misunderstanding and misuse,restore to him his attunement with

Cosmic Consciousness, after preparation through study and meditation, andafter deserving through serving.

The influx of inspiration and knowledge which maintains a continued connection with Cosmic Consciousness iscalled Illumination by the Mystics andis one of the gifts desired by all Adepts.

There is another point I wish tobring out with regard to attainment of success in Rosicrucianism, and that isthat very often a student who has advanced in the degrees may become more

or less accustomed to demonstrationsand the fulfillment of Cosmic law. Hisconsciousness has expanded a n d nolonger does anything seem strange or impossible to him. He unconsciouslydraws upon his inner powers and isguided and directed by the subjectivemind which he has learned to acceptand rely upon until very often he doesnot realize how many times during aday he uses powers which were dormant a few years ago— powers he didnot know he had. Nevertheless , hetakes them for granted now and does

not know how far he has traveled onthe Path. These same students weregreatly thrilled and filled with joy andgratitude in their Neophyte days at theleast glimmer of light or the smallestmanifestation of the working of Cosmiclaw, but now it is taken as a matter of course. Th ese students may also occasionally enter a period of shadow anddoubt when they may ask themselves,“W hat suc cess have I had in Rosicrucianism? W ha t indication, what proof can I offer to show that I have made

any progress after all these years of study?’’All that we can say to those students

is that it is not always possible for oneto judge his own progress in psychic or mental development. No two studentswill react in the same way to the variousexperiments although the majority of experiences are sufficiently similar toprove the laws involved. Since everyone is different physically, everyonemust also be somewhat different mentally or psychically, and the unfolding of

the soul segment within the physicalbody or temple must necessarily proceedalong slightly different lines, not onlydue to differences in physical make-up,but differences in previous experiencesand finally Karma which may require

certain conditions or experiences nowwhich would not permit of the awakening or use of all of the psychic powersat this time.

Then, too, the pursuit of happiness or success, whether it be on the materialor mental plane, like the will-o’-the-wisp, leads us ever onward. W e mayapproach the point in our progresswhich we have set as a goal, only tofind that it has advanced to a point beyond, and because we have not yet attained this new goal we may feel thatwe have not met with success. This is

as it should be if we are really makingprogress.

Therefore, Fratres and Sorores, donot permit yourselves to be discouragedor impatient for what you may understand as success in Rosicrucianism, but

give thanks daily to the God of your hearts, that you have set your feet onthe Path in this cycle, knowing thatwhether your progress be little or great,progress you must. Whether or notyour standard of success is in accordance with the Cosmic plan, you may besure the Rosicrucian principles you arereceiving in your weekly monographs,if properly applied, will bring to yousuccess and happiness. W e can onlyurge you to continue to study with confidence in the ultimate fulfillment of Cosmic law.

At other timesgorgeous and bewildering colored lightsseem to flood the sides of the mountain,and the upper portions of the old volcanic body. Occasionally those touristswho have found a strange path thatpermits them to approach the thick

woods, have seen at midnight glamorous columns surrounding what appearsto be a magnificent, marble edifice in theform of an ancient temple. Portions of gold domes and gold-tipped spires havebeen seen, and merchants and others

living in the cities near Mount Shastahave claimed to deal with strangely-dressed persons apparently of s o m elong-forgotten tribe or race of people.

From time to time so-called expertsin topography and forestry, along withothers of research inclinations, have issued statements that all the stories toldof the mysterious occurrences at MountShasta are fiction, and that there is noavailable place on the sides of the mountain nor in its immediate vicinity wheretemples could be built, or residences

could be maintained, and completelyshielded from observation. Each denialof the existence of these strange people,and each denial of their powerful control over certain natural courses, is followed by some mystical demonstration,some remarkable manifestation, or somecatastrophe. The very bowels of theearth have seemed to grumble at timesat the sarcastic remarks that have beenmade by those who were doubtful, butwho used unkind terms in speaking of the potential possibilities of a race thatpreserved wisdom descending from the

ancients, and which included mightysecrets of natural laws.

W e have been constantly imploredby men of academic learning to eliminate from our book called Lemuria, the Lost Continent of the Pacific all references to these strange occurrences andthese strange people, and to discontinuepreserving these traditions which constitute one of the facinating records of the history of this strange coast country. Others have ridiculed our statements, and ridiculed the testimony of 

those living in the district, but eachmonth of the year brings to us sound,substantial, and often much positive evidence of the truthfulness of t h e s estories, while our own members, andsome newspaper men have m a d e expeditions into the district a n d verifiedfacts which have been known to us for a long time, and which we cannot revealin all of their details.

Recently— during the latter weeks of August last—Mr. Arthur Brisbane, the

noted editor of the Hearst newspapers,and writer of the daily column called“Today,” visited the Shasta district incompany with Mr. William RandolphHearst and others, a n d dwelt there afew days hoping to find either proof or 

disproof of the stories they have heardand read, but approaching the investigation with not only a doubtful andskeptical attitude, but one of ridiculeand disdain.

In his column dated from McCloud,California, August 24, Mr. Brisbanetook occasion to make the followingstatements among many others:

“Mount Shasta is called the Rosicrucian mountain by many who believe inRosicrucian doctrines that would puzzlesome. Th ey tell of the lost continent

called Lemuria, in the Pacific, t h a tvanished.“A few Rosicrucian Lemurians, hund

reds of thousands of years old, survived, and now live in secret caves onthe side of Mount Shasta.

“ Sometimes, in s t r a n g e costumes,with floating, golden hair, they appear,tall, dignified, speaking a language notunderstood at local stores. They arewelcome, because they select what theywant, always overpaying in gold nuggets, never taking any change.

“They have strange powers, demagnetize your automobile so that it cannotrun, if you come too near, or withgentle, irresistible p o w e r push youback.”

Thus wrote Mr. Brisbane regardingsome of the facts not only contained inour book, but told in tales which onemay hear in almost any part of Northern California. However, Mr. Brisbanefollowed these statements with a few remarks of his own which a great manylooked upon as unfortunate sarcasm,and certain of challenging the power 

and wrath of these mystical people atMount Shasta. Here are Mr. Brisbane’schallenging remarks:

“You may see at Mount Shasta’sfoot, something real, more importantthan any Lemurians, at the ‘Mud Creek’project, where the Government is fighting floods from the glacier, that causessudden dangerous torrents.

“ For a change you will hear of aCCC camp well-managed, and youngCCC men working loyally, under com

petent army officers and efficient civilian superintendents.”

You will see that Mr. Brisbane’scomments attempt to belittle the powersof the Lemurians a n d to negate anyability that these mystics might have tocontrol nature’s laws, or to manifest adominating power over nature and her actions. Mr. Bri sbane attempts to makehis readers feel that a group of ‘‘well-managed" young men working under ‘‘competent army officers a n d efficientcivilian superintendents” were more important and demonstrated more intelligence and power in the control of nature’s actions than the mystics livingnear or in Mount Shas ta. He meant toimply that the men working at thisCCC camp and building the so-called

‘‘Mud Creek” project were more powerful, and more important in their mastership of nature and nature’s conditionsthan the old mystics living in thisstrange locality. Certainly, the comments by Mr. Brisbane were a challengeto these mystics. It was a challengethat not one of us would dare to make.W e cannot conceive of a more dangerous and m o r e foolhardy challenge tomake than to publish in the newspapersof America a statement to the effect thatyoung men in a CCC camp under thedirection of some government engineersand civilian superintendents were demonstrating and would continue to demonstrate a greater mastership of physical a n d material conditions aroundMount Shasta than these mystics havedemonstrated, or possibly could demonstrate. Certainly it would be unsafe inour opinion, based upon many importantfacts, to s t a n d at the side of MountShasta, or upon any portion of the foothills, and proclaim that engineering skillon the part of a few hundred men wassuperior to that of these mystics, or that

any mental power possessed by thesebuilders of creeks and dams was greater than the mental power and secret powers of the descendants of Lemuria. W eshould want to escape from that districtas rapidly as possible before utteringsuch a challenge for fear that the veryearth itself might open and devour us,or that the mountain on which we stoodmight rock and tremble and throw usinto some abyss, or t h a t the mysticsthemselves might express their displeas

ure, or at least accept the challengingremarks and give us an unpleasantdemonstration.

If you think all of this is far-fetchedand merely the ramblings of a person or group of persons deeply steeped insuperstitious beliefs, let me call your attention now to what actually happenedat Mount Shasta immediately followingthese unkind comments a n d criticismsmade by Mr. Brisbane. Let me quotefrom one of the newspapers publishedin Northern California a few days after Mr. Brisbane's article appeared throughout America. Here is the news as published in the staid a n d commonsensecolumns of the “Siskiyou County Messenger” of Montague, California:

"When nature goes a-twitter over 

this or that, she makes ridiculous theworks of man. Mount Shasta did justa little bit of a shimmy a few days ago,and in the winking of an eye, railroads,highways, concrete bridges, and monolithic dams were so much junk. Justwhat addled Old Man Mountain, thegeologist fellows have yet to tell us, andmaybe, still to find out. It might be inthe way of helping t h e m along withtheir task, to say that William RandolphHearst and Arthur Brisbane were at themoment under one and the same roof in

the Hearst baronial hall at McCloud.There is a possibility that Shasta merely trembled in the presence of greatness.There is t h a t other possibility that itshuddered over the sinister possibility of that close juxtaposition of the uttermostin guile and the ultimate in brains. Andthen again, it may have been nothingmore than Mr. Brisbane's new discovered Lemurians giving Shasta a bit of akick in the bowels that they mightdemonstrate to the great editor justwhat they can do when they are working at it."

In other words, this editor very diplomatically calls attention to t h e factthat perhaps these Lemurians whomMr. Brisbane so recently “discovered”and whom he challenged in his remarks,may have grumbled a little in their control of physical conditions and demonstrated to Mr. Brisbane and Mr. Hearstthat the big brains of the engineers andthe marvelous results of concrete mixingwere as nothing, or like unto soft clayin the hands of these masters . It is not

the first time that criticisms of MountShasta and its people, and attempts atdestructive, intrusive, investigation pilgrimages have b e e n followed by suchmanifestations as contradicted t h eclaims of the skeptics.

Mr. Brisbane s a i d in his commentsthat "you may see at Mount Shasta’sfoot, something real, more importantthan any Lemurians. " If you take alook at the “Mud Creek" project todayyou will see that it has been destroyedor wrecked and ruined in the twinklingof an eye, and that what Mr. Brisbanesaid was greater than anything theLemurians could demonstrate, is notworth looking at, and is a very positiverebuke.

In an editorial published in another 

newspaper in Northern California, the“Siskiyou News” of Yreka, this incident was referred to as follows:

“It was to be expected that Arthur Brisbane’s broadcasting to the world atlarge in his syndicated column, some of the habits and customs of the Rosicrucian Lemurians who reside in secretcaves high up on Mount Shasta, wouldnot meet with the approval of theLemurians..............

“No sooner had this been given theworld to ponder on than things began

to happen on the mountain. Ma ny attributed t h e disturbance to meltingglaciers, and opined that the dispensingof so much hot air close to the mountain— for as most everyone knows, Brisbane was hobnobbing with WilliamRandolph Hearst at his castle at thebase of Shasta when the secrets weredisclosed—caused the ice fields to melt,resulting in raging torrents of mud,rock, and other debris which tore outrailroad tracks, highways a n d bridgeswith wild abandon.

“Others, who through years of studyof the Lemurians, during which no confidence of the phantom people was betrayed to foreign ears, state that because Brisbane bragged of their overpaying in gold nuggets, the Lemuriansimmediately began replenishing their store of gold from the buried treasureof the mountain, and that the rushingrivers of mud flow are but the tail racesof the mining operations of the mountain dwellers.

“A s further reason f o r this theorythey point out that the inimitable Arthur carelessly referred to the ‘Mud Creek’CCC project as something real and of more importance than any Lemurians,telling the rushing torrents, ‘thus far 

shalt thou go and no farther.' Clearlyan insult to the Lemurians, belittlingtheir prowess as miners of gold a n dconstituting a boast which could not gounchallenged. Mor e gold could be obtained and mere men taught respect for the mountain dwellers with one operation, and immediately the reservoirswere tapped and the lesson taught.

“ It is to be hoped that this will bringan end to strangers prodding the peaceful Lemurians. It would appear thatBrisbane h a s already learned respectfor them, since his leave-taking followedclosely upon the heels of his last thrust.They should be left to t h e i r task of tending the mountain, one which theyhave performed admirably down throughthe centuries.”

W e plainly see by this editorial,which is very carefully veiled, thatthere are many sane-thinking personswho cannot refrain from associating Mr.Brisbane’s remarks and challenge withthe strange occurrence t h a t has happened. A manifestation such as thisfollowing immediately upon the issu

ance of his challenging remarks is notsimply t h e result of “ acc ident” nor amere “ coincidence.” He reminds us of the great ocean liner that left Britishshores many years ago as a new modelof ocean passenger vessel, and with theclaim bombastically made by its makersand owners that this new vessel was achallenge to the laws of nature, and itwas man’s mastership of the waters of the sea, and for the first time in the history of shipbuilding man had made anunsinkable ship. Then half way acrossthe ocean a small iceberg that had notbeen observed struck the ship in theside, and injured it so greatly that itsank almost immediately. It wa s asthough God and nature united in a planto prove to man that he could not challenge the forces of t h e universe, thewaters of the sea, nor the will of God.God was not displeased with man's attempt to build a safe a n d unsinkableship, but He was displeased to thepoint of teaching man a valuable lesson

when man said that he had mastered thelaws of n a t u r e and challenged thesuperior powers to wreck what he hadcreated.

Brisbane challenged th e Lemurianmystics. He challenged their power.He challenged their intellect and compared it unfavorably with that of thee n g i n e e r s and superintendents andworkers who were building a great dam

and a great creek. W e agree with theeditor quoted above in his h o p e thatthis demonstration will bring an end tostrangers who go prodding about thefoothills of Mount Shasta with skepticism and doubt and offer many unkindremarks. The only safe way to approachsuch an investigation is with an openmind, and with kindness and tolerationin the heart.

al ideas of a Beethoven, or a Bach, arereproduced for us daily, after the lapseof centuries, through the medium of their immortal music? Even to such menthe message of their own music may nothave been very clear — though we dowell to remember that many of themw e r e Rosicrucians — but to the soulwithin every man its full significance isalways perfectly apparent.

So my purpose in writing this littlearticle is to try to indicate how we mayso attune ourselves as to be able to absorb the inspired messages contained ingreat music and make them so much apart of ourselves that they continue toexpress in our daily lives long after theorchestral stri ngs are silent. In the busylives of most of us there is no time tos t u d y musical harmony, composition,and kindred subjects which might aidus in our efforts to interpret the meaning of musical compositions. But thereis always time for us to listen to goodmusic. Never, in fact, within the chronicled ages of written history, has music,good, bad, and indifferent, been soplentiful and so much with us as it istoday. Not only that, dear Brothersand Sisters, but has it occurred to youthat at the time, in Europe, when muchof the world’s greatest music was written the tremendous orchestra s of o u r own day w e r e unknown. One of my

tras, I wondered how many of myBrothers and Sisters were fully conscious of the power of s u c h music togive us real assistance along t h e pathwhich we are travelling. How manytimes have we all heard the phrase, “ Idon’t like classical music” ? And cannotmany of us who now are beginning toappreciate the mighty thoughts of the

great masters of music remember thetime in our own lives when we preferredsomething “ with a tune to it” ? But aseach of us continues patiently trying toaccomplish the Great Work in his ownlife there comes to him moments when,by special attunement, he is privilegedto contact the thoughts of master mindsand evolved souls far ahead on the pathof realization. Such moments are treasured long in our memories. Do we realize fully, I wonder, that the inspiration

good friends, a German gentleman whohas travelled much in Europe, recentlyexpressed the idea to me in this way:“ I like to listen to music here better thanI did at home. In Germany we write the best music but we cannot play it sowell as you do in America because wehave not the money to gather together the wonderful orchestras that you havehere. That is why I say America hasthe best music in the wor ld. " So, beingmost bountifully supplied w i t h one of God's richest gifts, let us seek to understand how we may best appreciate it,and so do honor to the Giver.

Let us first understand that music isprimarily the language of the emotions.When we are intensely happy do wenot feel the urge to “make a joyful

noise’’? When our souls are filled withlove or sorrow, how impossible we findit to express our feelings in mere words.Even t h e poet finds himself sometimesat a loss. As student Rosicrucians weare e v e r seeking to sort out our emotions, to intensify those t h a t are constructive and to eliminate those whichare detrimental to our progress. Our aim is the fullest possible expression of Light, Life and Love. Music speaks tothe soul of love, in terms which only thesoul can fully comprehend. It speaksalso of joy, peace, and highest endeavor. Therefore, when we listen to greatmasterpieces it would be futile for us totry to interpret their message to our minds in words. To our  minds musicmay sometimes bring pictures, for artand music are closely allied, but its realmessage is to the soul, the highest thereis in us, and it is here that it can bestassist us in our spiritual unfoldment.

Therefore, when we seek to refreshour souls through the medium of somegrand musical composition, let us firstmake sure that it is m u s i c of a type

worthy to be admitted to t h e inmostsanctuary of our being. Then, as in allother cases when we seek to make contact with the Divine Spark within us,let both body a n d mind become asquiescent as possible. Sit comfortablyand relax. Close your eyes in order toshut o u t all extraneous visual impres

sions. As the music begins do not try tolisten to it but just let it flow towardsyou in a glorious flood. Allow it to infuse your whole being a n d reproduceupon the sensitive keyboard of your own personality all the grand emotionsof its originator. Soon you will findyourself carried along u p o n a tide of ecstatic enjoyment to a fairy w o r l dwhere y o u are constantly aware of arapid succession of new a n d joyousfeelings and you h a v e forgotten thatyou are listening to sounds produced bymen a n d instruments. Great gusts of glorious passion will sweep o v e r you;thrills of joy or pain will course throughyour being; and as the music mounts tosome tempestuous climax you will findyourself holding your breath for very

excitement and wondering what newthrill is coming next.

When the music subsides and youawake from the dream, you will beamazed at the feeling of peace and refreshment which it has left with you.Sometimes you may find your nerves allatingle, as after doing some of the exercises set forth in our monographs. Ihave often felt a glow in the center of my forehead, the significance of whichis well-known to many of our members.These effects a r e quite sufficient evi

dence of the benefits received, but theyare not the only ones. It has been wellsaid that the soul should have its musical bath as regularly as we cleanse thebody. The influence is real and lasting.The sordid emotions of everyday lifeare displaced by the pure a n d nobleideals expressed by great music; andt h e harmony established between ourselves and the universe finds its expression in making life more worth living.

After one such experience no one willever say again, “ I don ’t like classical

music,’’ nor will he have anything butthe d e e p e s t reverence for all goodmusic. I am afraid I fail to understandthose who can sit and converse or reada book while a high-class musical entertainment is in progress, and afterwardsexpress their appreciation in such wordsas, “Oh, yes, it was very pretty."

Sir—to perform my late promise toyou, I shall without further ceremonyacquaint you that in the beginning of the year 1666 (at which time I appliedmyself to the grinding of optic glassesof other figures than spherical,) I procured a triangular glass prism, to trytherewith the celebrated phenomena of colours. And for that purpose, havingdarkened my chamber, and made a small

hole in my window shuts, to let in aconvenient quantity of the sun’s light,I place my prism at this entrance, thatit might be thereby refracted to the opposite wall. It was at first a very plea s

ing diversion to view the vivid and intense colours produced thereby; butafter a while applying myself more circumspectly, I was surprised to see themin an oblong form; which according tothe received laws of refraction, I expected would have been circular. Theywere terminated at the sides w i t hstraight lines, but at the ends the decayof light was so gradual, that it was difficult to determine justly what was their figure; yet they seemed semicircular.

Comparing the length of this coloured spectrum with its breadth, I found it

about five times greater; a disproportionso extravagant, that it excited me to amore than ordinary curiosity of examining from whence it might proceed. Icould scarce think that the variousthickness of the glass, or the termination with shadow or darkness, couldhave any influence on light to producesuch an effect; yet I thought it notamiss, first to examine those circumstances, and so tried what would happen by transmitting light through partsof the glass of divers thicknesses, or 

through holes in the window of diverssizes, or by setting the prism without,so that the light might pass through it,and be refracted before it was terminated by the hole; but I found none of these circumstances material. The fashion of the colours was in all these casesthe same.

Then I suspected, whether by anyunevenness in the glass, or other contingent irregularity, these colours mightbe thus dilated. And to try this, I tookanother prism like the former, and soplaced it, that the light passing throughthem both, might be refracted contraryways, and so be the latter returned intothat course from which the former haddiverted it. For, by t h i s means, Ithought the regular effects of the firstprism would be destroyed by the second, but the irregular ones more augmented, by the multiplicity of refractions. The event was, t h a t the light,which by the first prism was diffusedinto an oblong form, was by the secondreduced into an orbicular one, with as

much regularity as when it did not atall pass through them. So that, whatever was the cause of that length, itwas not any contingent irregularity.

I then proceeded to examine more

critically, what might be effected by thedifference of the incidence of rays coming from divers parts of the sun; and tothat end measured the several lines andangles, belonging to the image. Its distance from the hole or prism was 22feet; its utmost length 13% inches; itsbreadth 2%; the diameter of the hole

of an inch; the angle, which the rays,tending towards the middle of t h eimage, made with those lines in whichthey would have proceeded without refraction, was 44° 56'. And the verticalangle of the prism, 63° 12'. Als o the refraction on both sides the prism, that isof the incident and emergent rays, wasas near as I could make them equal, andconsequently about 54° 4'. And the raysfell perpendicularly upon the wall. Nowsubducting the diameter of the holefrom the length and breadth of theimage, there remains 13 inches thelength, and 2% the breadth, comprehended, by those rays, which passedthrough the center of the said hole, andconsequently the angle of the hole,which that breadth subtended, w a s

about 31', answerable to the sun’s diameter; but the angle which its lengthsubtended, was more than five such diameters, namely 2° 49'.

Having made these observations, Ifirst computed from them the refractivepower of that glass, and found it measured by the ratio of the sizes, 20 to 31.And then, by the ratio, I computed therefraction of two rays flowing from opposite parts of the sun’s discus, so as todiffer 31' in their obliquity of incidence,and found that the emergent rays should

have comprehended an angle of about31', as they did, before they were incident. But because this computation wasfounded on the hypothesis of the proportionality of t h e sines of incidenceand refraction, which though, by ownexperience, I could not imagine to be soerroneous as to make that angle but 31',which in reality was 2° 49' ; yet mycuriosity caused me again to take myprism, and having placed it at my window, as before, I observed, that byturning it a little about its axis to and

fro, so as to vary its obliquity to thelight, more than an angle of 4 or 5 degrees, the colours were not therebysensibly translated from their place onthe wall, and consequently by that variation of incidence, the quantity of re

fraction was not sensibly varied. Bythis experiment, therefore, as well as byformer computation, it was evident, thatthe difference of the incidence of rays,flowing from divers parts of the sun,could not make them after a decussion,diverge at a sensibly greater angle, thanthat at which they before converged,which begin at most but about 21 or 32minutes, there still remained some other cause to be found out, from whence itcould be 2° 49'.

Then I began to suspect whether the

rays, after their trajection through theprism, did not move in curve lines, andaccording to their more or less curvitytend to divers parts of the wall. And itincreased my suspicion, when I remembered that I had often seen a tennisball, struck with an oblique racket,describe such a curved line. For, a circular as well as a progressive motion being communicated to it by that stroke,its parts on that side, where the motionsconspire, must press and beat the contiguous air more violently than on theother, and there excite a reluctancy andr e a c t i o n of the air proportionatelygreater . And for the same reason, if therays of light should possibly be globular bodies, and by their oblique passageout of one medium into another acquirea circulating motion, they ought to feelthe greater resistance from the ambientaether, on that side where the motionsconspire, and t h e n c e be continuallybowed to the other. But notwithstanding this plausible ground of suspicion,when I came to examine it, I could observe no such curvity in them. And be

sides (which was enough for my purpose) I observed, t h a t the differencebetween the length of the image and thediameter of the hole, through which thelight was transmitted, was proportion-able to their distance.

The gradual removal of these suspicions at length led me to the experi-mentum crucis, which was this; I tooktwo boards, and placed one of themclose behind the prism at the window,so that the light might pass through a

small hole, made in it for that purpose,and fall on the other board, which Iplaced at about 12 feet distance, havingfirst made a small hole in it also, for some of that incident light to passthrough. Then I placed another prism

behind this second board, so that thelight trajected through both of theboards, might pass through that also,and be again refracted before it arrivedat the wall. This done, I took the firstprism in my hand, and turned it to andfro slowly about its axis, so much as tomake the several parts of the image,cast on the second board, successivelypass through the hole in it, that I mightobserve to what places on the wall thesecond prism would refract them. AndI saw, by the variation of those places,

that the light tending to that end of theimage, towards which the refraction of the first prism was made, did in thesecond prism suffer a contraction considerably greater than the light tendingto the other end. And so the true causeof the length of that image was detectedto be no other, than that light consistsof rays differently refrangible, which,without any respect to a difference intheir incidence, were according to their degrees of refrangibility, transmittedtowards divers parts of the wall..............

Hence it therefore comes to pass, thatwhiteness is the usual colour of light:for, light is a confused aggregate of rays imbued with all sorts of colours, asthey are promiscuously darted from thevarious parts of luminous bodies. Andof such a confused aggregate, as I said,is generated whiteness, if there be a dueproportion of the ingredients, but if anyone predominate, the light must inclineto that colour; as it happens in the blueflame of brimstone; the yellow flame of a candle; and the various colours of thefixed stars.

These things considered, the manner how colours are produced by the prismis evident. For, of the rays constitutingthe incident light since those whichdiffer in colour, proportionally differ inrefrangibility, they by their unequal refractions must be severed and dispersedinto an oblong form in an orderly succession, from the least refracted scarlet,to the most refracted violet. And for thesame reason it is t h a t objects, whenlooked upon through a prism, appear

coloured. For the difform rays, by their unequal retractions, are made to divergetowards several parts of the retina, andthere express t h e images of thingscoloured, as in the former case they did

the sun's image upon the wall. And bythis inequality of refractions they became not only coloured, but also veryconfused and indistinct.

Why the colours of the rainbow appear in falling drops of rain, is also fromhence evident. For, those drops whichrefract the rays disposed to appear purple, in greatest quantity to the spectator’s eye, refract those of other sortsso much more, as to make them pass beside it; and such are the drops on theexterior part of the primary, and interior part of the secondary bow.

The old phenomena of an infusionof lignum nephriticum, leaf gold, fragments of coloured glass, and some other transparently coloured bodies, appearing in one position of one colour, andof another in another, are on thesegrounds no longer riddles. For, thoseare substances apt to reflect one sort of light, and transmit another; as may beseen in a dark room, by illuminatingthem with similar or uncompoundedlight. For, then they appear that colour only, with which they are illuminated,

but yet in one position more vivid andluminous than in another, accordinglyas they are disposed more or less to reflect or transmit the incident colour.

From hence also is manifest t h ereason of an unexpected experiment,which Mr. Hook, somewhere in hismicography, relates to have made witht w o wedge - like transparent vessels,filled the one with red, the other with ablue liquor: namely, that though theywere severally transparent enough, yetboth together became opaque ; for, if 

one transmitted only red, and the other only blue, no rays could pass throughthem both.

I might add m o r e instances of thisnature; but I shall conclude with this

general one, that the colours of all natural bodies have no other origin thanthis, that they are variously qualified toreflect one sort of light in greater plentythan another. An d this I have experimented in a dark room, by illuminatingthose bodies with uncompounded lightof divers colours. For, by that means,any body may be made to appear of anycolour. They have then no appropriatecolour, but ever appear of the colour of the light cast upon them, but yet withthis difference, that they are most briskand vivid in the light of their own daylight colour. Minium appear s there of any colour indifferently, with which itis illustrated, but yet most luminous isred; and so bise appears indifferentlyof any colour with which it is illustrated,but yet most luminous in blue. Andtherefore minium reflects rays of anycolour, but most copiously those induedwith red; and consequently when illustrated with daylight, that is, with allsorts of rays promiscuously blended,those qualified with red shall aboundmost in the reflected light, and by their 

prevalence cause it to appear of thatcolour. And for the same reason bise,reflecting blue most copiously, shall appear blue by the excess of those rays inits reflected light; and the like of other bodies. And that this is the entire andadequate cause of t h e i r colours, ismanifest, because they have no power to change or alter the colours of anysort of rays, incident apart, but put onall colours indifferently, w i t h whichthey are enlightened.

ture of the trialsa n d tribulationsthat come into thelives of many of our members fromtime to time because of the upheavals of earthly

powers and the recreative activities of nature.

Within the past year many hundredsof our members and friends have suffered intensely in physical and mentalanguish and have suffered heavy finan

cial and worldly loss through floodsand storms, through winds and tornadoes, through high seas and rains,through war and conflict.

W e felt deeply the sad conditionsthat came so unexpectedly upon multitudes in the Midwest when the sandsof the deserts lifted themselves up inhuge clouds and moved onward to fertile valleys and covered them with apall. It was an unusual thing for theUnited States and a new experience in

the lives of many thousands of persons,but it was not new in the scheme of things as Nature has moved herself inages past.

During the resulting loss of homesand crops, of water facilities and food,

with the destruction of animal life andother v a l u e d possessions, thousandsunited in prayer, petitioning God tobless them and their lands with rainwhile our Government sent its greatestexperts to study the nature of the causeand the possible correction of this greatdisaster. And then came what seemedto be a trick of nature's laws for to thesame extent that she had withheld her rains and parched the land in one section, she poured f o r t h water in greatabundance and flooded the lands in another section. As we examined thephotographs sent to us of areas whereour members live and with their homesflooded with water, their gardens andfields destroyed of product, homes reduced to floating kindling and other valued possessions ruined for all time,and with disease and famine followingin the wake of the storm, we felt deeplyindeed for the thousands of membersthus p l a c e d in unfortunate circumstances.

And then there were the storms inFlorida and the storms in the West,Eas t, North, and South. In foreignlands our members were torn in conflicts and their peace of mind disturbed

and their homes broken by the separation from those who were required totake arms a n d go into the march of death. Fo r these members we also feltthe anguish that moved us deeply.

W e are never unmindful of the thingsthat affect the lives of our members, andif it were within our power to avert or divert any of these disasters, we woulddo so, as willingly would we bear a portion of their burden and of their sorrow.W e have watched with admiration themanner in which these members have

accepted a large portion of the grief that has come into their lives and philosophically, bravely, and with mysticalunderstanding have uttered no word nor given any sign of anger toward Godand His divine rulings. They have remained steadfast in their faith, amplifying their courage with their understanding of Nature's laws, and with determination that wins, they have rebuilttheir homes, reorganized their lives, andhave started a new cycle of earthlyexistence.

Sometimes we are asked how it is andwhy it is that there should be amongour Rosicrucian members those who arein unfortunate circumstances requiringfinancial assistance or seeking for it, or requiring treatments for their health andthe correction of o t h e r material or worldly affairs. Some persons who donot reason sufficiently ask why it is thatmembers who have been with us in our organization for several years are notblessed by the Cosmic to such an extentthat no unfortunate things occur in their lives and why it is that as students of 

our principles they cannot prevent or atleast correct immediately any unfortunate changes that take place within their bodies or in their social or business affairs. The past year has given us manyexcellent answers to such questions. W eknow, for instance, that in upper NewYork State there were many of our members who looked upon their worldlyaffairs as satisfactory under the generalexisting conditions, whose homes wereplaces of contentment, whose incomeswere sufficient f o r their needs, and

whose health and other personal affairswere satisfactory in every sense. Yet inthe twinkling of an eye all of this waschanged. These same members within afortnight found themselves homeless or 

unfortunately situated w i t h worldlypossessions destroyed, with ill healthbeing fostered by the lack of proper sanitary conditions, and with their incomes removed and their financial andmaterial savings t a k e n from them.Nothing that these members could havedone through the mystical principlesthey have learned or through their devotion to Divine laws could have prevented the disaster that came upon their communities. They might have selfishlyprotected their own personal lives andbeings by having moved from the district a few days before the disaster came upon them if they had been forewarned or had intuitively listened towhat the Cosmic might have told them.But it is doubtful whether more than ahandful of our members would havefound it compatible with their situationand future requirements to have abandoned all that they owned and to havefled to other districts, and certainly itwould not have been compatible withthe proper Rosicrucian spirit for each tohave said unto himself, "I will flee from

here and save myself and what I cantake with me and let the others who remain take care of themselves.’’

Too often those who have the comforts of life and who have, through fortunate efforts or fortunate blessings, attained many of the necessities of lifeand accumulated additional assets toserve them in the future, look upon theunfortunate persons as being incompetent or incapable or perhaps undeserving. I have heard the fortunate ones of life say, “If those unfortunate ones had

any brains, any ability, any understanding, they would not be in the poor andunhappy circumstances which now surround them. They probably do not deserve anything better than they have or they would not be in their present predicament!’’

Such persons forget that they shouldnot judge others lest they be judgedthemselves, and they should not forgeteither that God and Nature often act ina manner to prove to the boastful onesthat that in which they pin their faith

may be taken from them if it is of theearth. Th e indifference on the part of those who are in fortunate circumstances toward those who are suddenlyunfortunate is one of the sad features of our present human relationships. While

it is true that in various parts of theworld—as we witnessed in some of thesections of Algiers, for instance—thereare those who are unworthy of anybetter conditions than those that surround them simply because they do notdesire, do not seek, and will not acceptany improvements, any modifications, or any change in their stupid and ignorantcours e in life. I sa y that it may be thatthis is the true situation. But it certa inly is not true throughout the world andthroughout all divisions and sections of human life. The most fortunate of todaymay be the unfortunate of tomorrowand the great financial and economicchange that took place in the UnitedStates in 1929 was, after all, a greatblessing in disguise to thousands uponthousands of persons who had pinnedtheir faith in their ability to control thematerial and mortal assets of this earth.Through that experience several millions have learned that the possessionof material wealth is not the key to contentment, happiness, peace, and power.

W e consider that every one of our 

members living in these stricken areaswas a worthy and deserving human being, entitled to all of the blessings of life and equal in every sense with thosewho look upon themselves as the specialbenefactors of God's blessings. Thesemembers sought no financial help fromanyone and represented those who wereenjoying life and enjoying the Rosicrucian studies to a satisfactory degree,and yet they were suddenly reversed intheir position and put among the unfortunate. This change of position occurs throughout our membership frommonth to month and year to year justas does the opposite change take placedaily, monthly, a n d yearly wherebymembers who came into our organiza

tion in unfortunate circumstances are gradually brought into the happinessand peace of life.

All of these experiences are part of the great scheme of things. Eve ry in

dividual who lives in any community or section of the country must assume and share the Karmic, Cosmic, earthly conditions of that community. He cannotlive as a being separate and apart fromall worldly affairs, for even the anchorite who takes himself apart from civilization and goes into the vastness of themountains to live in a cave reduceshimself in his social and worldly statusto that of the most primitive being andat the same time assumes all of the conditions, Karmic and otherwise, of thedistrict in which he lives. To the same

extent that each and everyone of us iswilling to accept and enjoy God’s andNature’s benefits as they come to thecommunity with which we are associated must we also accept and suffer under the s e e m i n g unfortunate conditionswhich arise.

The Order is doing its utmost throughevery Cosmic channel to assist its unfortunate members affected by such unforeseen and uncontrollable conditionsand it dedicates to them through thisspace in our magazine this month our assurances of our willingness and desireto apply every principle in betteringtheir unfortunate conditions and circumstances and in aiding them to rise topeace and happiness again in the quickest time possible and with renewed determination to face life’s problems withunderstanding and appreciation for theblessings that all of us enjoy even whengrief and sorrow seem to envelope us.

And may we ask all of our memberseverywhere to be mindful of the unfortunate ones in all of the districts of theworld where storm and strife and war 

and contest are in manifestation, directing thoughts of peace and love towardthem that they may sense this in their hours of sadness.

R. R. SwinburneClymer refuses toaccept the challenge to a publicdebate issued byAMORC. This i snot a surprise tothe administrationo f A M O R C b u tundoubtedly willbe to many whoread Mr. Clymer’sliterature and believed that he was

sincere in desiring the matter under dispute to be brought to a conclusion in anopen, fair public manner.

Recently in reply to a vitriolic writtenattack upon the AMORC and its officers, widely circulated by Mr. Clymer who operates a small organization from

his farm in Pennsylvania which hestyles Rosicrucian, the AMORC Membership Defense Committee issued abrochure of defense entitled, AUDIA L T E R A M P A R T E M (Hear the Other Side). The brochure repudiatesthe malicious charges of Mr. Clymer,and in addition contains a letter whichwas sent to him by registered mail, containing a fair challenge that he debatethe matter in public where all interestedcould see and examine any and all evidence he or AMORC could introduce.

Mr. Clymer was to represent his organization, and the chief executive of A M O R C to represent the RosicrucianOrder. Further, it was stated in theletter, that it was hoped that Mr.Clymer would not, as heretofore, evadeaccepting such a debate by replyingthat he desired a L IM IT E D committeeinvestigation, or resort to any methodwhich would be a substitute for, or anevasion of an open general public investigation of the matter. A M O R Ceven offered to pay the hall expensesand invite all concerned— Mr. Clymer being given the same opportunity to invite any he desired. It also offered topay Mr. Clymer's transportation to thehall in any mid-western city if he wouldcome upon a public platform in thepresense of those he accuses. But whatdid Mr. Clymer do? He ran true to 

form. He would not accept the challenge to a public debate, but offered ina lengthy letter counter - propos als—E ACH AN D E V E R Y O N E e vading apublic debate and suggesting privatecommittee investigations instead.

your intimation is not well founded.W e have never evaded your challenges. W e treated your first challenge with dignified silence and contempt—it was only worthy of suchtreatment, but you took advantage of 

our silence. To your second challengewe replied promptly and respectfullyrefused to join you in an undignified and useless public debate but invitedyou to join us in a full and completeinvestigation that would be finally decisive of all issues and settle the pending controversy once and forever, butyou ran away from a real investigation and the only answer you havemade to our sincere invitation is thisyour third challenge for a public debate, which is just a repetition of your former challenge—just another 

stall, a further stratagem and a repetition of your former subterfuge.

“W e are inclined to reply to your third challenge line for line and tomake a complete analysis of everycondition you prescribe; we may dothat later if the occasion demands,however, it will be a sufficient directanswer to advise you that we will not accept your challenge for a public de-bate, which does not mean that wedo not desire a proper investigation.”In analyzing this reply, note that Mr.

Clymer refers to a PUBLIC DEBATEas useless. This would be quite true if it were not a public issue and also a factthat it was Mr. Clymer himself who hasconsistently made it public. He has issued booklet after booklet not exclusively private to his own membership, butto the general public and those not hism e m b e r s , a ttacking nefar iously theAMORC. That very act then removesthe matter from the category of beingprivate. Mr. Clymer attacks A M O R C ,PUBLICLY, through a wide distribution of books, B U T when challenged to

a public debate before a court of thevery public to which he circulated hisbooks, he refused to “join you in an undignified and useless public debate.”

W e have been constantly faced withhis substitutions of a plan which he entitles, “A Proper Investigation”; however, his proper investigations, as heterms them, center about limited com-

mittee investigations, while his books of 

attempted damage are being publiclycirculated. Think of it— a private, limited committee investigation desired byMr. Clymer while he issues his books of attack upon A M O R C publicly. Mr.Clymer says he is “inclined to reply to

your third challenge,” BUT, you willnote, not publicly on a platform in thepresence of those he accuses. Undoub tedly, as heretofore, his reply will againbe in books where he can avoid meeting those face to face whom he charges.

Permit us to quote one more statement from Mr. Clymer’s voluminousepistle, which I am sure will proveamusing to A M O R C members andfriends. It is:

“And now, as a subterfuge in lieuof an answer to the recent bookletsissued by us, which you cannot answer but must evade, you followyour oratorial mania, again you resort to senseless subterfuge and pettystratagem—again you resort to your time worn artifice of challenging us,for the third time, to a public debate.”How embarrassing it must be to Mr.

Clymer to realize now that while hewas even writing or having someoneelse write the letter for him, thousandsof the AMORC books of defense,which he claims we could not issue,were in the mail, perhaps even now acopy is in his possession. So A M O R Chas not only answered Mr. Clymer bythe method which he uses—books—butit wants to go beyond that unsatisfactory means and reveal Mr. Clymer on a public platform, reveal the factthat he cannot substantiate in personbefore an audience that would scrutinize him and his evidence, the chargeswhich he has made and which he desires to reduce to book form only, or have limited committees examine.

If Mr. Clymer so greatly dislikes pub

lic debates, he should realize that it washe that brought the matter before thepublic, and that public who has read hisbooks and AM O R C ’s are more thancurious as to why, after having set thematter in motion, he refuses to appear  before them in a court of public opinion. Mr. Clymer m u s t realize that thesearchlight of public inquiry never blindsthose not afraid of the light or startlesthose not having anything to conceal.

SURPRISING SCIENTIFIC DISCOVERIES PROVE

ROSICRUCIAN PRINCIPLES

H A T w o u l d y o uthink if our organization were to issue an attractivelittle leaflet, well

printed, on verynice paper, with acolored border andevery other feature of dignity andinterest, and placein the center of that cover the following surprising

headline:

“ S H O U T A T Y O U R M I L K"

“If the milk in your baby’s milk

bottles does not digest well, shout at it,and the milk will become an excellentfood!”

Such an announcement as this wouldbe hailed by the all-knowing critics of metaphysics and mystical sciences as anexcellent proof of the unsoundness of mind and the unreasonableness of allmystical postulations. It would be republished, and sent broadcast as an excellent reason for discounting anythingand everything that Rosicrucians mightteach or claim to teach.

I remember that only a few years ago—perhaps fifteen years ago—our organization was bitterly criticized by men of science, men in the medical fraternity,by newspaper writers and editors, and

so-called intelligent critics, who laughedat and ridiculed the Rosicrucian statement issued by us that the radio waveswhich carried music and sound could beused to carry therapeutic healing powers to the human body. I recall when Ifirst explained to an inquiring scientificnewspaper writer why the Rosicrucianswere experimenting so deeply and sodifferently with so-called wireless or radio principles.

In 1912, three years after my returnfrom Europe where I first contacted

some of these more secret principles of the Rosicrucian teachings, I maintainedin my study an experimental room, oneof the largest private wireless equipments to be found in Ne w York. In thisroom I was experimenting with chemistry, electricity, physics, a n d manyother principles and f o r m s of thesciences, in an attempt to verify, test,and use some of the secret teachingsthat had been revealed to me in themanuscripts, lectures, and documents

that were loaned to me or given to mefor the preparation of the work of our present organization. I had to workpractically alone in those days in order to make sure of the principles before Iattempted to reveal any of them to the

most qualified of the applicants for membership in our organization . One of the first persons to whom I revealedsome of these surprising ideas wasFrater Thor Kiimalehto, our presentInspector-General for the district of New Y ork. He was not only a mysticat heart but one who had received initiation in the Martinist Order— an organization affiliated with Rosicrucianismall through Europe—and had receivedenough scientific education to enablehim to comprehend the more profoundbut questioned principles included in theRosicrucian teachings. He was truly anapt student at all times, and was therefore well qualified to be one of our firstenthusiastic workers, and his great comprehension of the laws and principles isresponsible for his present enthusiasmand unselfish services today.

In my private experimental laboratory, I was able to gather together material, equipment, and ways and meansfor testing not only the new idea of the“wireless” for communications but for many other uses, some of which have

become more or less universally recognized since 1912, and some of which weare only releasing to the world thisyear, and some of which will not be released for another few years. Therewere a number of other private wirelessstations in New York at the time, butnearly all of them were limited in their experimental work by the fact that supplies and equipment could not be bought,but had to be made. Many of these experimenters were poor and could ill afford the great expense that was in

volved in discovering the many mysterious principles involved in wireless,whereas in my case I not only had thefinancial means and facilities for havingequipment made for me, but the instructions I had received and the manuscriptsI possessed for consultation saved manyyears of research work and much timein wasted effort.

The story of those wireless experiments has been told on other occasions,for it resulted in a number of radio im

provements that are now in use and itresulted in my radio equipment receiving government signals and test communications which even the governmentequipment did not receive. However,one constant effort on my part in those

days, and which has been continued upto the present time with all of the radioequipment we now possess, has been todemonstrate that healing treatments canbe sent by radio, through radio, andwith the radio waves themselves. Duringthe time we operated a large broadcasting station in Florida, there were periods when that equipment and our “short wave” equipment were used totransmit healing vibrations in a manner that we could not announce to the public, but discussed o n l y with our advanced members and demonstrated tobe correct. When we touched uponthese matters in a general way in our magazines or literature, we were criticized for venturing into such theoretical,speculative matters as were not only unsound or untrue, but sure to bring usthe ridicule of science and the thinkingworld.

But today I sit at my desk and I readsuch magazines as those that are privately published by scientific bodies for the recording of their own scientific experiments and achievements, and I no

tice that with the greatest of dignityand in the most profound and involvedlanguage conceivable, the men of science announce that they have just discovered new principles and new lawswhich are identical with what we havetaught for a long time.

Going back to the seemingly ridiculous idea of talking or shouting at milkto make it more digestive, let me callyour attention to this statement that appears in a scientific publication that isnot meant for the public to read, but is

edited and circulated by eminent menof science. Here is the statement:“Make a loud enough noise at milk

and the baby will digest it more easily.”Is that not much like the headline

which I used a few minutes ago, andwhich I said would bring tremendousridicule if we used the words on a leaflet? But, say s this scientific magazine,“that, in fact, is the discovery reportedby Dr. Leslie A. Chambers, of the University of Penn sylvania.” He made this

statement while speaking before a science association meeting held jointlywith the American Association for theAdvancement of Science. It has beenfound, according to Dr. Chambers, that

some cows naturally produce soft-curdedmilk, but many do not; that milk whichis not soft-curded is hard for a baby todigest. Such milk forms a hard curd andeven the pepsin of the stomach does notsoften it sufficiently to have it digestproperly, whereas soft-curded milk is of the utmost value to babies or to adultswho have “weak stomachs.” Now Dr.Chambers found that the vibrations of sound affect the milk. He therefore triedvarious rates of vibrations and studiedthe effects. He caused vibrations to a ffect the diaphragm over which flowed athin stream of milk. When the diaphragm vibrated at different rates of vibrations, it brought about a change inthe milk. The lowest vibration he usedwas 360 per second, which he says isthe pitch of F-sharp in the first octaveabove middle C of the keyboard. Thehighest note he used was that of 3000per second, which was about three octaves higher than the lowest one. Theresult was an immediate effect upon thecurd-forming character of the milk. Thelouder and stronger the noise or voice

or sound, the greater was the effect uponthe milk.

Now, remember that an eminent manof science is making this statement, andeminent men of science saw the demonstrations, and a very conservative anddignified publication is announcing it toa number of dignified and learned menthroughout the scientific world. It isnot a humorous announcement, and it isnot merely a mystical, speculative idea.But if the same announcement had beenmade by our organization in a leaflet

some months ago, some years ago, or even this very month, the public wouldsmile at it, newspaper men and editorswould ridicule it, and no doubt a number of our learned members in the lower degrees who are still trying to determine whether everything we teach issound or not would immediately resignfrom the organization and say that theyhave had enough of our nonsense. Yetin all of our monographs we teach andclaim and attempt to prove by simpleexperiments given in the home work that

vibrations caused by sound or otherwise,act and react upon all other things thatexist, because everything exists throughand by means of vibration, and thesevibrations can be altered and changed

by other vibrations, and the nature of all material things in its manifestationcan be changed by changing the ratesof vibrations.

Those who were here at our last Convention and visited the laboratories of our Science Building saw with their owneyes and heard with their own ears asimple little instrument with severalstrings stretched upon it like banjostrings which could be easily tuned tothe right pitch or right rate of vibrations and when one of these strings was

plucked, while tuned to the right pitch,it not only produced a musical note buta color, and in addition to the color andsound there was a design or pictureformed by the vibrations. Slightly detuning the note, by tightening or makingslack the silver or catgut string, causedthe color of the note to change as wellas the pitch or tone, and also the geometrical design which was drawn upona large screen automatically. Thesemembers also saw a beam of sunlightentering the dark chamber of the experimental room, breaking itself througha prism into a large spectrum of brilliantcolors, and by mere vibrations of tone,sound, or physical movement, or throughthe vibrations of the light waves andthe heat waves in the colors, formedmagnificent and startling pictures upona screen on the wall. Som e of thesepictures thus automatically formed without any human manipulation of themwere scenes of magnificent sunsets on alake or ocean, Oriental scenes of domesof mosques and minarets, weird landscapes, magnificent paintings or rural

and other scenes, symbols and designsof various kinds, and on a number of occasions actual words were formed onthe screen which intelligently expressedcertain thoughts. Hu ndred s of the members saw these things, and will never forget the simplicity of the demonstration, the unquestionable fact that theeffects were produced automatically bythe sun rays without human intervention, and that sound waves and thewaves of the human aura and even theenergy that radiates from the human

eye in giving treatments could be madevisible and tangible. Everyon e who visited these laboratory demonstrations andthose who remained to experiment withthe instruments and methods themselves,went away convinced that our whole

lives are formed by, affected by, controlled by, and composed of, nothingmore than vibrations.

For this reason every member in theorganization should give some thoughtto the elementary lessons and monographs sent to him by us, dealing withthese principles of vibrations. Mem bersattending the Convention and visitingthe laboratories freely stated that theywere going back home and were goingto review their earlier lessons in connection with their higher experiments,because they realized now the tremen

dous truths contained in the monographs of the first five or six degrees.

In the same scientific publication towhich I have been referring, occursanother article reading as follows:

“Short radio waves can now be usedin medical treatment of selected regionsof the body by a technique developedby Dr. Franz Nagelschmidt, of St.Bartholomew’s Hospital in London.”

As we read the brief description of his process, we find that he admits thatall he has succeeded in doing in the

way of improving this principle is tolocalize the effect of the radio wavesand make them perform a localizedchange in the blood and tissue of thebody. But his experiments are nothing

new to the Rosicrucian workers in thelaboratories of AM O R C ’s Headquarters, and whereas in the past our statements regarding radio waves containinghealing power have been smiled uponor frowned upon for many years, now

science admits the truth of the matter.W e have said over and over whatwe will again repeat: Every new andstartling discovery in the field of sciencehas confirmed what the RosicrucianMonographs issued by AMORC haveproclaimed for years, and nothing discovered by science or demonstrated byit in any year or at any time has contradicted what the Rosicrucian lessonsof AM O R C have taught, nor causedA M O R C to modify, retract, or eliminate any of its fundamental claims andteachings.

This fact should be sufficient warrantfor all of our members to realize thatthe lessons of AM O R C come from someastonishingly learned and dependablesource, and are not the mere opinionsof one individual or even a small groupof individuals. Still, a few of our members are tempted from time to time tostep on the by-paths that lead intospeculative theories simply because of the preposterous statements made bysome leaders of new schools who claimthat they have found new truths that

are different from those taught byA M O R C . T his is to be regretted, butwe presume that it is the way of theworld as it always has been and probably will be for years to come.
