nowned in history,there is one eventassociated with itthat is of interestto mystics and students o f ancientphilosophy and thecustoms of civilization. I refer tod r a m a . In the

western world today our clear andproper appreciation of the value of drama is colored by our familiar con

tact with its modifications and perversions in the form of modern plays andcinema productions. W e have lost sightof the origin and truly classic importance of drama and the essential partit has played and always will play inthe lives of civilized human beings.

Both dancing and drama had their origin in the mystery schools of theOrient and in the temples of worship of Egypt and India. Only a few days agoI had an interesting discussion withFrater Lafferty who has come to our 

Headquarters to take charge of theschool of dancing in connection withthe College of Fine A rts. W e have herein the college the professor of musicand voice culture, harmony and orchestration, and the professor of sculptureand painting, form and color, and theprofessor of rhythmic motion, the poetryof motion and dance, as well as dramaand tableau. I called to the attentionof our Frater the fact that rhythmicmotion in the form of the swaying of the body began as an accompaniment

to prayer, meditation, and chanting, inorder that the consciousness of the individual might be attuned to the rhythmic motion of the universe, but that a

little later the companion art of pantomime was added to that of the rhythmicmotion and this was the foundation of dancing as revealed in our Rosicrucianteachings and records. I had not takenthe time to investigate what historiesand encyclopedias say about the originof dancing, nor have I done so today,but I learned from Frater Lafferty thatwhat our Rosicrucian records say inthis regard is quite different from whathe has been taught and what the bestschools teach. He had not been taught

to appreciate the place of pantomime inthe art of dancing but saw at once thatit was the only explanation to logicallyaccount for the various positions of thebody in any interpretative dance or ceremonial dance.

But out of the art of pantomime alsocame eventually the artistic features of drama. Dram a would have remained apurely mechanical and lifeless recitationof ideas or historical events always reporting that which had already occurredor might occur, but never portrayingthe lifelikeness of the ideas, if it hadnot been that the art of pantomime haddeveloped this special feature of instruction and illumination.

In nearly all of the most ancient of Oriental rituals we find the High Priestand the other ritualistic officers intemples, synagogues, cathedrals, or school assemblies attempting to dramatize certain prayers and ideas withpantomime. Even in the adorations tothe mythological gods in the variousEgyptian, Indian, and Persian religions.

the High Priest or Priest emphasizedsome of his ideas with pantomime byplacing himself in certain postures andchanging these as certain ideas werebeing expressed. Interpretative dancing

today has simply elaborated upon therhythmic motion and introduced moredefinite postures of pantomime, but unless pantomime explains and interpretsthe ideas of the dance, the mere artistic,graceful, or mechanical movement of thebody, hands, arms, and feet will notadd interest, grace, nor consistency tothe dance no matter how beautiful itmay be in its rhythmic motion.

Th e same is true of dramatics. It isa notable fact that the tendencies todramatize are often developed very

strongly in children, for they find iteasier to express their ideas and emotions through pantomime and dramaticaction than through words. Even beforethey can speak properly, little childrenwill give dramatic emphasis to their incoherent sounds or words. Later, asyoung children, the limited vocabularymakes it almost necessary for them touse pantomime or elements of dramaticsin attempting to convey an expressionof their emotions.

The art of drama has come down

through the ages as one of the fine artsbecause in its purest form and in itsideal and ethical application it has become a school of instruction bringingto our senses of sight and hearing andto our consciousness a better understanding of the incidents of the past andof the reactions to human emotions. Thecinema art and the modern applicationsof dramatic principles have modifiedthe pure form of the drama and evenperverted it, but drama in its highestform will never be eliminated from thelist of necessities of life any more than

will music, painting, or sculpture.It is interesting to note that the

month of September is important inthe dramatic history of North Americabecause on the 5th day of September inthe year 1752 the first drama, the firstplay, ever produced in America waspresented at Williamsburgh, Virginia. Itwas the impressive Merchant of Venice which was selected as the most fittingfor this important event. Perhaps fewof those associated with the stage or 

drama are familiar with this importantevent but nevertheless it will always remain an outstanding date in the historical calendar of this western world.

The month of September has manyanniversaries in it and brings to mind anumber of important events in the development of civilization. The first dayof the month is associated with thetransition of Louis X IV in the year 1715. The sixth of the month is theanniversary of the transition of WilliamMcKinley who was shot only a fewhours earlier by an anarchist while thebeloved president was genially associating with those who loved him ata great national fair. W e learned manylessons here in the western world

through that unfortunate incident, theprincipal one being that the freedom of the press can easily become a form of licentious expression going beyond allbounds of reason and good taste. W erefer, of course, to that division of the press that is commonly called "yellow” or radical. W e all remember howcertain newspapers for many days prior to the assassination of the Presidentcarried large cartoons which were later printed life-size and posted upon billboards in many eastern cities demandingthat something be done to McKinley

because of his reluctance to do manythings that radical types of minds demanded, while others were in sympathywith his reluctance. Som e of these car toons and pictures urged or promotedthe idea that the President should beassassinated or punished in some cruelway for his peaceful attitude, and werecall that the resulting catastrophe wasalmost a precise carrying out of the destructive ideas promoted in these radical newspapers.

Among the events of the past thathave their anniversary in this monthand which brings to our mind the peculiar stages of evolutionary thinkingand development of civilization is theLeopold and Loeb conviction and imprisonment on the 10th of September,1934. This case gave to all of us an illustration of what can happen when thehuman mind becomes perverted andtends to operate in the wrong direction.Here were two young men students ata university and sons of wealthy par

ents who had been allowed to developtheir lives without responsibility, without any appreciation of the value of money, the value of human life, andthe spiritual things of life. They developed ideas of perversion and soughtfor the monstrous and bizarre in life’sexperience. They finally reached thepoint where they wanted to see whatexperience the human consciousnesswould have as a result of destroyingthe life of another or of torturing aninnocent victim, and they proceeded towork out their strange view-points, their strange desires, regardless of the in justice to another. Their case broughtto light the weakness of our moral andethical educational system in the westernworld and the danger that surrounds

a life of affluence, opulence, laziness,and irresponsibility. These young menhad more money to spend than ten ordinary young men and yet they produced nothing but disaster, contributednothing to civilization but regret andwrecked their own lives and set backward the development of Americanstandards of youthful education.

September is also the anniversary of the birth of the Republic of France inthe year 1792 on the 21st day of themonth. On the 26th of the month Bal

boa discovered the Pacific in the year 1513 and thereby contributed to theadvancement of civilization. In ancienttimes on what is equivalent to the 20thof September in the year 356 B. C.,Alexander the Great was born.

Interesting to a large portion of thepublic of North America is the fact thatthe year 5696 of the Jewish era beginson the 15th of September. This remindsus of the fact that our calendar is ahuman made device with many arbitrary

features and, therefore, inconsistent inits general application and usefulness,and like all other man-made institutions,subject to many errors, abuses, and misunderstandings. The month itself wasnamed after one of the Roman rulersand the whole calendar of years beginning far back in the centuries beforethe birth of Christ has been altered fromtime to time until there is much disputeamong the most learned of men in regard to how many years have actuallypassed since any great event occurredin the centuries before the Christian era.It is claimed on good authority that theyear A. D. 1 should be A. D. 4 or possibly A. D . 3. But the Jews have their own calendar and so do the Mohammedans and many other religious cults

or denominations, and many organizations or great international movementshave a calendar of their own such as theRosicrucians who began their calculations with the outstanding events in thelife of the traditional founder, Amen-hotep IV , in 1350 B. C. Allowing for the 1350 years that preceded the Christian era, the 1935 that have passedsince then, and the three years discrepancy at the beginning of the Christianera, we have now 3288 years as the traditional cycle of Rosicrucianism.

September introduces to us the Zodiacal sign of Libra, beginning about September 22 according to your positionon the earth’s surface, and it is the beginning of the fall season and the ending of our summer months. Throughoutmost of the civilized countries, it marksthe beginning of new activities, a cyclefor study, profound thought and development, investigation, and progress. Letus make the most of the months betweennow and the holidays to improve inwisdom and character.

IntoleranceHOW IT PREVENTS OUR LOGICAL REASONING

A p p a r e n t l y ,many of our edu

cators, scholars, religious “teachers,”and so-called “men of letters” havenever heard of Protagoras nor hisdictum; if one may judge by certain of their pronouncements anent matters thatcannot, by their very nature, be disposed of by a mere wave of the hand,

the flourish of a pen, or the handingdown of “considered” opinion.Most of us, for example, believe that

the earth is spherical in shape and thatwe live on the outside of  it. But why dowe believe this? Sim ply because, fromour early childhood days, we have beentaught this theory. And we say “theory”advisedly, because it is nothing more or less than a theory, entitled to the sameconsideration, and no more, than anyother theory. Had we been taught,since childhood, that the earth was

square, oblong, or triangular in outline,we would now believe, with equal conviction, that the earth, in actuality, possessed these various shapes.

A majority of those who believe inthe spherical shape of the earth havenot taken the trouble to inform themselves of the various other shapes that

the earth might, under a given set of conditions, conceivably assume; havenever read such books and dissertationsas “The Cellular Cosmogony" byKoresh, or “Arcane Cosmology” byA M O R C . In other words, if they havegiven the subject any thought at all,they have studied but “one side of thequestion” — their reasoning, in consequence, is lopsided.

There are many among us who sincerely believe that Shakespeare was theauthor of the plays and sonnets that

bear his name. Som e few, in fact, areeven accredited with being “authorities”on Shakespeare. They seem to be blissfully unaware of the many books, published both in this country and abroad,that absolutely discredit the Shakespearean hypothesis and transfer theauthorship from Shakespeare to FrancisBacon. Or, if they are aware of contrary evidence, they pass it by as “foolish” and “immaterial,” or ignore the evidence altogether— preferring to remainlopsided.

A certain friend of ours, when quer-ried as to his reaction to a well-knownradio talk given every week, replied,“ H e’s a lot of bologna.” W hen askedhow often he listened to the radio talker, his answer was, ‘‘Oh, I heard him

once or twice.” Our friend, of course,was suffering from a large over-dose of ‘‘superiority complex.” The experienceshe had had, what he thought, the exactitude and veracity of  his pre-conceivedopinions were not to be called into question by anyone, "on the air” or off it.Since he had listened to the radio speaker “once or twice,” his gigantic intellectamply qualified him to pass final judgment on a man and his entire program.No wonder Bacon caused Shakespeareto say, ‘‘Lord, what fools these mortals

be!”Yet, is this experience so very differ

ent, in essence, from that of many of us? W e approach a subject—almost any subject — with a home-made, pre-conceived opinion concerning it and, inorder to convince ourselves that we couldn’t possibly be in error, we listento every argument, we read everytreatise, and buy every book that supports our  side of the question; ignoringall the rest as trifling and inconsequential, and assuming a thoroughly intoler

ant and superior attitude toward anyonewho dares to differ with us. W e and our  opinions are not to be questioned!

Before one is qualified to pass as an‘‘authority” on any subject — in fact,even before one may hope to hold alogical and reasonable opinion on any sub ject— it is first necessary, in the onecase, to throughly master, and in theother case, be equally well-informed, onboth sides of the question involved.

Anything less than this must, inevitablyand of necessity, breed intolerance.

In this w o r l d of artificiality oneshould ever keep in mind that it is notwell to let others do your thinking for you. If you will examine both sides of every question— of every doubtful issue—with an ever-abiding sense that all are theories, without a bit of proof toback any one as being even 1% right,it will be far better for you than examining just one side and getting hallucinations that it may be entitled to wear a crown.

And this goes for every ism, sect,creed, church, plain or fancy religion,cult, or whatever. There's some good inall, and each one admits itself to be thebest. So far as any one belief is con

cerned, no one has any copyright onbasic theories or the frills which manyand sundry have added thereto. Theonly one which, in any way, lives up tothe basic principle of “ministry for itsown sake,” is the Quakers—who haveno paid ministers and who take up no collections at meetings—under  any pretext.

It is also well to remember that thereis no royal road anywhere. There aresincere folk in every cult. So sincerethat Catholics burned Protestants whenthey could; just as Protestants executedCatholics when they could — both sincere.

So — read, learn, study and compareall and you will be able to judge for yourself. And in the end, if you are ableto see that being on the level, helpingothers, and being kind is “the whole lawof the prophets” — the only religionworth while, intolerance will automatically disappear and you will have graduated!

The "Cathedral of the Soul" is a Cosmic meeting place for all minds of themost advanced and highly developed spiritual members and workers of theRosicrucian Fraternity. H E v e r y w idespread interest inthe Cathedral of 

the soul has ledmany hundreds of those w h o havebenefited b y i t sgreat work to investigate the esoteric principles andall the other littledetails connectedwith t h i s uniquewestern world idea.

In eastern countries and especiallyamong the Orientals the idea of a Cos

mic cathedral or Cosmic meeting placeof the minds of those united in spiritual meditation is not new; and in many

parts of Europe there are branches andinner circles of the Rosicrucian organization which have taken advantage of the esoteric principles back of such aCosmic plan and have held weeklyperiodic sessions for the uniting of theminds of the members in Cosmic Consciousness.

In the western world, however, andespecially in North America, the ideais quite new or at least it was quitenew until a few years ago when theCathedral of the Soul was first intro-

duced through our organization. Instead of calling the great central placeof contact a “Cosmic Assembly/' assome of the European Rosicrucians havedone for many years, or the “CosmicConvent," as many esoteric students of 

the Rosicrucian Order have done in pastcenturies, we thought that a slightlydifferent name would be more understandable to the average student of our organization. Bear in mind that in theFrench language the word conventmeans convention and all of their assemblies, congresses, and general conventions of members are called convents. An assembly of the minds inthe Cosmic world would therefore be aCosmic convent.

Among the many interesting ques

tions asked about the work in thiscountry is that pertaining to the mysticalnumber 7-7-7 which we use in connection with the Cathedral of the Soul.In Europe and the Near East nearlyall of the esoteric divisions of the Rosicrucian Fraternity and many thousandsof esoteric students outside of the Rosicrucian organization have visualized andcreated in their ritualism and meditations a cathedral or a monastery or animaginary edifice of some kind in theCosmic where the “Heavenly Hosts"

assemble for united worship and the direction of spiritual vibrations throughthe earth or where the minds and consciousness of the advanced mystics mayreach upward and blend in unison withCosmic minds of the Cosmic plane. Inthese foreign countries the symbol for this unity of thought has always beena white triangle with its point upward,probably symbolizing the uplifting toan apex of the consciousness of the multitudes on earth who are united at timesin such spiritual meditation. At eachpoint of the triangle the figure seven

was placed as symbolic of the spiritualand esoteric principles involved.

All mystical students know that thenumber 7 is the highest and purest formor position mathematically that may beattained through the uplifting of the

T he spiritual consciousness. The number 3,Rosicrucian 5, and 7 have always been significantDigest in esoteric matters including Free-

September   masonry, as well as Rosicrucianism. In1935 the Martinist Order the 7’s are highly

significant and in many other divisionsof esoteric schools the mathematical andvibratory value of 7 indicates the purestform of consciousness, life, love, anddivinity. Three is the common symbol of the Trinity wherein all things are united

while 7 represents the triangle upon thesquare, the 3 above the 4, but unitedin a manner to place the trinity of 3above all of the material things represented by the cube or square. Threetimes 7 gives a total of 21, and if thedigits of 21 are added together we secure 3 which is the number of divinityand of perfection. Therefore, the sacredsymbol of the Cathedral is 7-7-7 uponthe white triangle of pure spirituality.

The emblem of the triangle with 7at each corner will be found on nearlyall of the sacred, spiritual manuscriptsof the mystics of the Orient and inmany of the secret, private, esotericschools of Europe. Dr. Pap us, the onetime Supreme Grand Master of theMartinist Order, and perhaps the greatest living representative of the highspiritual doctrines of St. Martin, alwaysused the white triangle with 7-7-7 impressed upon it as his spiritual emblembefore his altar when reaching out tothe Cosmic to contact the consciousnessand souls of the Martinists in all lands.

This eminent mystic whose very nameis reverenced throughout the esotericworld made the symbol of the triangleand 7-7-7 more highly respected andreverenced than any other mystic of the pas t. In the archives of the esoteric schools preserved at Cologne andin similar archives in London, Paris,and Lyon, there are old vellum booksbound with sheepskin and rapidly becoming yellow and faded, but on their covers is impressed the white trianglewith the 7 on each point. Everyonefamiliar with esoteric principles knowsthat any book bound under and en-sconsed by this sacred emblem andthree sacred numbers is one of the Holyof Holies in the secret literature of allesoteric schools.

But like many other sacred emblemsthat immediately command respect andreverence among mystics, the symbol of the white triangle and the three numbers 7-7-7 have been misused at timesin the past. Those who have wanted

to appropriate some of the most idealistic emblems in order to use them tocover over any acts or thoughts thatwere questionable, found it convenientat different times to label their activitiesand reports, their books or their manuscripts with the symbol of the triangleand 7-7-7. But such deception couldhave its effect only on the general public, the unlearned, or those unfamiliar with mystical symbolism. Whenever areal student of mysticism found a bookor manuscript bearing this esoteric symbol and group of numbers and foundalso that the book dealt with materialistic matters exclusively and not withCosmic or spiritual principles, he knewthat he had before him not only a bookof errors but a deliberately conceived

and planned piece of deception. Thenumbers 7-7-7 were first used on someof the rare manuscripts found in thetomb of Christian Rosenkreuz amongthe books known as Liber T and Liber M. But long before his time the number 7 used three times or occasionallysix times was recognized as a symbol

the enlarging and beautifying of Rosicrucian Park. The new buildings, newlawns, large shady trees, shrubbery,flowers, pleasant walking places andconveniently arranged shady seats madea strong appea l to the members. Longbefore the hour for the opening of the

first session, it was quite evident thatwe were going to have a larger audience for the first night than at anyprevious Convention and that indicatedthat the total attendance at this Convention would be larger.

The first session opened promptly ateight o’clock with choral numbers bythe Rosicrucian robed choir under theleadership of Mrs. Violet Cowger, theProfessor of Music in the Rose-Croix University. This was followed by theinvocation by Rev. Father Markovitch

of the Greek Orthodox Catholic Churchwho invoked the blessing of God andthe Cosmic upon the assembly in hisnative language. Then the SovereignGrand Master, Dr. LeBrun, steppedupon the platform and declared theConvention open as being authorizedby him in accordance with the constitution and statutes. The temporarychairman then called upon various cityofficials to welcome the visiting members and delegates. An official of the

This year our visitors and otherscoming to the Convention as delegatesor representatives of our districts began to arrive very early. Because of 

the Rose-Croix University c l a s s e s ,thirty or more of them were here at leastthree weeks before the opening session,and many others were here for three,four, or five days ahead of the firstmeeting.

Order throughout the country as theofficial symbolic flag of the A M O R Cfor North and South America. Hecalled attention to the fact that thesilk material was of an unusual andcostly nature and that the magnificent

handwork in making so large a flaghad been done by a real Betsy Rossof the Rosicrucian Order, Soror AlmaS. Harrington, living in San Francisco,who is a graduate of one of the institutions of fine arts. The flag was un-furled and placed upon the platformopposite the American flag and therewas real enthusiasm throughout the entire assembly as it gazed for the firsttime upon this beautiful banner. I understand that it is to be photographedand reproductions made in The Rosi'«•crucian Digest at some later time.

Finally the Imperator was introducedto the assembly and called upon to makethe annual address. After a few wordsof introduction, the Imperator proceededto address the thirty-two graduates of the Rose-Croix University who hadcompleted their courses of study theday before. He then assis ted Dr. A.Cartland Bailey, President of the fac-ulty of the University, in presentinggraduation certificates to each of thestudents, amid much applause and joy.

In the Imperator’s speech followingthe presentation of the diplomas, hedealt at length upon the need at thepresent time and during this presentConvention for a complete investigationof the various malicious charges madeagainst the organization and its administration by Batchelor, Aram, Cly-mer, and others. He called attention tothe fact that Mr. Clymer had issued aseries of new books in which the mostderogatory statements were made andall of which could easily be proven untrue. He also pointed out the self-evident falsehoods in a letter being circularized by Mr. Batchelor attemptingto portray the inner activities of A M O R C , but, in fact, outlining themost untruthful conditions that the human mind might conceive. Taking some

covered one iota of evidence to supportthe statements made. The result of thelong discussion and careful analysis of the charges was that the members anddelegates voted at least seven times thatthey were whole-heartedly in support

of the Imperator and completely refuted the statements made that wereuntrue and unkind.

The first session closed late in theevening with the large assemblagethoroughly awakened to the importantduties lying before it and with an enthusiastic attitude that spoke well for the activities of the coming week.

Monday. July 15

Early Monday morning new visitors

began to arrive at Rosicrucian Parkand by nine o’clock the registry officewas crowded with newcomers who hadarrived during the night or early in themorning by train and automobile.Throughout the day this registration of additional members and delegates continued. Some of them had interestingstories of how they had been delayedby slight accidents, or accidents on thepart of others, or by wrong routing incoming by automobile, or through visitsthat they made on the way . I imaginethat quite a few of them overestimatedtheir ability to speed across the countryin automobiles.

Various committees appointed yesterday began their activities early in themorning hours and, of course, therewere those who wanted to attend specialmystical ceremonies in the EgyptianTemple with the practice of vowelsounds, breathing, and other elementsthat are only conducted in temple ceremonies occasionally. Others visited theScience Building and were escortedthrough the various laboratories byProf. Bailey and shown marvelous piecesof mechanism which register human vibrations and make visible human auras,or enable an advanced member of theOrder to register definitely his mentalpower to control physical things outside of his own body. Others visitedthe chemistry laboratory, radio room,and other departments of the building.

In the various offices interviews werebeing granted by the executives and

departments chiefs, while members weregoing through department after department watching the entire procedure of caring for members' lessons and correspondence, the direction of specializedworkers in the eighteen different departments.

Everywhere on the lawns under treesand large bits of shrubbery memberswere grouped for discussions of theprinciples and teachings, while the fountain was playing with its streams of water and band and organ music filledthe air.

It is an inspiring sight to see hundredsof members in their various attractivesummer styles of dress and all with their orange colored convention ribbons hang

ing from the left breast seated amidflowers and trees over a large space of beautiful ground, all of them happy,smiling, enthusiastic, and expressingtheir joy at being in such a wonderfulenvironment.

Over and over again, as I have goneabout asking for comments that mightbe helpful in regard to our plans for next year or otherwise, I have heard itsaid that the photographs and pictureswe have published showing views andscenes of Rosicrucian Park do not do

 justice to the amount of space, number of buildings, and the beautiful pathways, stone seats, shady nooks, plazas,and other features of the grounds. TheMuseum, of course, is always an attraction, but so is the Egyptian Shrine andmany of the other special structures andbuildings. But around the ConventionAuditorium the members flock and withtheir continued conversation and comments and bustling activities, I am reminded of a swarm of bees about a hive.Within the Auditorium the various representatives of the districts throughout

North and South America were discussing their activities with others sothat they might all cooperate. Over twohundred different districts of NorthAmerica were represented by delegatesor district commissioners, each planningfor the united activities this fall andcoming winter.

Early in the afternoon the Imperator escorted a group of fifty through themysteries and marvels of the light andcolor laboratory of the Science Building,

which happens to be the Imperator’spet hobby in the sciences. Here hedemonstrated to them the principlesupon which sound was turned into moving form and color as applied in theconstruction of the color organ, and heshowed the members how various musical notes would automatically radiatetheir vibrations of sound in a manner to cause other vibrating devices to giveforth form and color upon a screen. Healso demonstrated the marvelous colorsto be found in a sunbeam and how thissunbeam falling upon a prism could beused to paint marvelous pictures by nature’s own vibrations. As a concludingfeature he exhibited to the membersone of his latest arrangements and scientific achievements, which is a new

form of that ultra, ultra violet lightcalled “black light,” and which is invisible to the eye as a ray of light butmakes things that are ordinarily invisible to the human eye highly visibleeven to the extent of making the vesselsand nerves in the human flesh visibleand producing many weird effects, especially in revealing the human aura andthe healing vibrations that emanate fromthe fingers and hands. Similar demonstrations to groups will be carried oneach afternoon before the afternoonsessions.

At the afternoon session which began at two o’clock the chairman conducted an open forum for the askingand answering of questions. Questionsof all kinds pertaining to the teachingsand principles were asked by membersand answered by advanced members or officers.

At five o’clock other groups weretaken through the Science Buildingwhile still others wandered around theground s. In the evening after a pleas

ant period in the moonlight watchingthe eclipse of the moon, the sessionfor the evening began with preliminaryannouncements by the chairman andthen an illuminating address by the Supreme Secretary on the Evolution of the Soul. This subject was so marvelous in its concept and explanation of the important principles that it was decided to have it printed and publishedin our magazine. At the conclusion of the address by the Supreme Secretary,

The Imperator was invited upon theplatform to comment on the variousinteresting factors in the work and general activities of the organization.

Thus another wonderful day of theConvention was completed with regis-trants still arriving during the eveningsession.

Tuesday, July 16

During the morning hours membersand delegates continued to arrive andoccasionally one of the large highwaybuses would drive up to the park anddeposit a large number of members whohad come from the various western districts.

In the Supreme Temple the morningperiod of drilling and training in mystical ritualism continued, accompaniedwith periods of meditation and concentration in the wonderful vibrations of that sacred place. These temple periodsare always one of the outstanding features of our Conventions and aregreatly enjoyed by every visitor.

There was an unusual attitude andspirit of happiness manifested everywhere in Rosicrucian Park at this Convention, perhaps because of the conviction on the part of every member anddelegate that the annoying trials andtribulations instituted by our friendlyenemies in the past had all been settledand because of the very evident increasein membership of the organization illustrated by the increased attendance atthe Convention and the comments onthe part of all District Commissionersand Inspectors General regarding thevery notable increase of activities andnumber of members in their districts andthe increase in the number of buildingsand departments at Rosicrucian Park.

Every member and delegate seemed tobe extremely happy and with the musicof bands and other types being playedon the lawns, the fountain playing itspretty streams in the sunlight, groupsof members under shady trees ever laughing and enjoying the summertimeweather, one was reminded of the carnival season at the French or ItalianRiviera or of a special holiday in oneof the great eastern or western beachresorts. The first few days of this week

having been rather warm, it broughtforth all the colorful wearing apparelof the season and this was enhancedby the hundreds of brilliant bushes of flowers, plants, shrubbery, and treesthroughout the park.

The Imperator's little dog, Buddy,who seems to think that the whole of Rosicrucian Park and all of its officeswere created as a playground for him,soon became very popular with themembers and already he has had a Convention ribbon attached to his collar sothat he considers himself an official partof the sessions. He has been performing a lot of his tricks for the youngpeople and this morning delighted manywith his pranks in the large pool wherehe played with two little children in sunbathing suits, splashing and jumpingwith them in the water and space of thefountain to his heart’s content, bringingforth from every portion of the parkthe members and delegates who hadcameras with them.

Early in the afternoon Frater Landisof Reading, Pennsylvania, who was appointed as successor to the late Frater Marx, Inspector General for the centraleastern district, read to the assembly theConvention speech and report whichFrater Marx had prepared and whichhe had intended to read on this occasion.

Frater Landis has become very popular with all the members and delegates andis an enthusiastic worker.

Following Frater Landis, the Imperator paid tribute to the eastern membersfor their great loyalty and devotion andfor their assistance in making the tripof F rater Landis possible. The Imperator also gave forth instructions to the various committees, District Commissioners,and others regarding the constructivework and recommendations which theywere encouraged to carry out in this

Convention. Then followed the annualaddress of the Sovereign Grand Master,Dr. Le Brun, who gave an instructiveand inspiring talk on "The Spirit of Man,” which was unusually enlightening and impressive in its simplicity of interpretation of the deeper principlesof the teachings.

The evening session began very earlywith some wonderful violin solos performed by Miss Dorisse Thomasson,

the little 11-year-old violinist who is aspecial protegee of the Imperator. Shehas played for the organization in SanJose many times, but this was her firstappearance before one of our Conventions. She is a pupil of Frate r Ebert,a member of the Order in San Jose,and is a marvelous performer on theviolin, destined to become a successfulconcert musician. Her life and accomplishments even at this tender age illustrate what can be done with childrenwho are permitted to express themselves in an unrestricted manner in accordance with the inner desires of their consciousness. Little Dorisse revealedto the Imperator some years ago thatshe was musically inclined and had aninnate love for music which she prob

ably carried over from another incarnation. Although her public school workhas not been neglected, she has beengiven every opportunity to devote herself to music. She often arises at four o’clock in the morning and practices for hours before going to school and willslip home from school in the afternoonsand practice for hours in preference toany other form of outdoor amusement.She frankly states that she would rather practice and play her violin than eat,sleep, or do any other of the necessarythings. O f course, she has been carefully guided in this regard so that her health might not suffer, but her mastership at eleven years of age plainly indicates the success of this method of encouraging the free expression of inner abilities.

Following the music, Soror EthelW ard , the Secretary-General of theJunior Order of Torchbearers and Rosicrucians addressed the Convention onthe subject of  What Makes For Success In Ros ier ucianism. Her enthusiastic

manner of speaking and her great familiarity with the problems of child training and child culture, as well as theapplication of the Rosicrucian principlesin the life of every adult, enabled her to hold the attention of the entire Convention in intense interest.

The Imperator then asked permissionto assist in the matter of calling theofficial roll of the Convention in order that he might make some personal comments in regard to the statistical infor

mation. All present found this featureof the program intensely interesting. Itwas discovered, for instance, that thelarger number of members and delegatespresent at the Convention, excluding

those from adjacent parts of California,were from the middle central states withthe second place going to the northwestern states. The central southernstates held a high position in the classification, as did the central Atlanticstates. Texas once more presented anexcellent representation, as did Canada.The various methods of coming to theConvention were classified and it wasdiscovered that in addition to trains, airplanes, buses, trucks, automobiles andhorses and carriages, there were twowho came from fairly distant points by

bicycles. In classify ing all of the members and delegates present in accordance with their active religious affiliations, it was found the Methodist andChurch of England or Anglican led thelong list with equal numbers. The nexthighest number represented those of theLutheran faith, the next Presbyterian,then the Christian Church and thenChristian Science, while the Baptists followed thereafter and then the long listof other religions including the Jewish,Buddhist, Salvation Army, etc. A large

number of Roman Catholics were alsopresent, as were some from the GreekOrthodox Catholic Church which wasrepresented by one of their priests whomade the opening invocation on the firstnight of the Convention.

In regard to the professions, it wasfound that the highest number amongthe various ones was the classificationof teachers, with almost an equal number of musicians. The next highestnumber were physicians and then nurses,followed with persons engaged in the

newspaper and magazine editing field,and then architects, clergymen, accountants, attorneys, and many others.

In regard to length of time in theorganization, a very large number identified themselves as having been in theOrder for twelve or fifteen years. Thenext largest number were those whohave been in the Order nine years. Theaverage member and delegate at theConvention had been in the Order active as a student for five years or more

according to the official count takenon this occasion in the presence of theentire Convention. Two members identified themselves as having been in theOrder but one week and two but oneday. These were sons or daughters of 

older members who had come to theConvention with the intention of joining the Order and receiving special initiation.

Quite a number of members registeredfrom outside of the United States andthe most distant members and delegateswere from Monte Carlo in Monacco,the Island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean, Panama Canal Zone, andHawaii.

About one fourth of the membersidentified themselves as having beenpresent at the Convention last year andless than half had been present at other Conventions. Every section of everystate and province of the United States,Canada, and Mexico were representedby a delegate, a District Commissioner,an Inspector, and Councilor. At theclose of this evening’s session the members lingered in the park until a verylate hour enjoying the beautiful moonlight and outdoor music.

Throughout the daytime hours theImperator has been escorting groups of delegates and members through the lightand color mystery chamber of the Science Building. In this room, illuminatedonly by a beam of sunlight broughtinto its center through a channel thatpermits the light to be reflected by revolving mirrors on the roof, the Imperator has been demonstrating the principles of the color organ by showinghow prismatic colors of sunlight, or what is known as the spectrum, wouldbe modified by vibrations of soundplayed upon musical instruments. The

vibrations of sound cause prismatic mirrors to revolve and turn, thus formingunique designs upon a screen, eachdesign being unique to the note thatvibrates while the colors change in accordance with the deflection of the

osicruct n  Imperator also demonstrated toLfigest  each member and delegate the scientificSeptember   mystery known as black light, an al-1935   most invisible light which illuminates

the human aura and distinctly revealsin a dark room the healing power andaura that emanates from the eyes, breathof the mouth, and the palms of thehands and finger tips of those who havehad any psychic development. The hun

dreds of members who passed throughthis chamber and witnessed the presenceof this radiating energy from the eyes,mouth, and hands in accordance withthe stage of development and degree of study, were astounded at the marvelousarrangements for proving so many of the principles of the teachings. Allacclaimed this half hour spent in themystery chamber the most fascinatingevent of the Convention. Each member and delegate was permitted to examine all the equipment and even operate, since it was of such a simplenature that each and every principle of sound vibration, light, and color involved in the demonstration was easilyunderstood.

At the same time the members anddelegates were escorted through thelarge physics laboratory where hundredsof scientific instruments of a costly nature imported from France, Germany,Austria, England, and other countries,as well as those made in the craft shopof the university, were being tested;other periods were devoted to the examination of the equipment in the chemistry and biological departments wherethe large microscopes and other devicesenabled members and delegates to seeliving matter in the smallest forms of cell life reacting to mental and other powers as taught in the Rosicrucianmonographs.

Wednesday, July 17

While new arrivals occupied the in

terest of the reception committees andhostesses scattered in every point of thepark, hundreds of members were participating in the various temple ceremonies again while the committees werebusy holding meetings in the conferencerooms, demonstration halls, lecture halls,and elsewhere where they could bealone. Most of the committees had aminimum of twenty volunteers as officially a part of the committee andothers had many associate workers.

Each committee had been voluntarilyformed and only the chairman and members of the committee knew the exactnames of those participating in the workand investigation of each committee. Itwas determined on the opening night

of the Convention that it would not bepossible for any critics of the organization to say that the Imperator or anyof the officers of  the Supreme Lodgehad personally picked either directly or indirectly any of the persons to serveon the committees. For this reason theImperator stated that the rules of theConvention called for volunteers oneach committee without restriction or limitation except a suggestion that eachcommittee have as many members fromas diversified sections of the North

American jurisdiction as possible. Someof these committees have already made contact with the group of conspiratorswho have been trying to injure the organization for so many years and foundthat they were assembled in San Josealready planning to bring some unpleasant features into the Convention.When these committees contacted thesepersons they found that the conspiratorswere in very definite disagreement inregard to their individual motives andpurpose for attempting to injure the organization. and that they were not ready

to support or even admit the authorshipof manv of the letters and statementsthey had sent forth over their  own signatures. It is very evident that thesecommittees of our members and delegates. composed of newspaper men. attorneys. well-trained business men andexcellent students of human nature, havefound a number of keys to the conspiracy plot and will reveal the real purposes of the plot before the Conventionis ended.

At the afternoon session of the Con

vention the assemblv was addressed byGrand Councilor Thomas Kuhn of W ashing ton, D. C., who spoke on thesubject of  Rosicrucians in Business. Frater Clark L. Bradley, an attorney,later addressed the Convention on certain legal phases of the committee’s investigations and in regard to practicalaffairs of life in the business world.

At the evening session the entire assembly was presented with one of the

most unique and surprising musical features ever seen at one of our Conventions. The entire robed choir sang againa number of songs of an Oriental nature,including, Indian Dancer, Song of India, and In a Monastery Garden. The choir 

this time was accompanied by the Rosicrucian orchestra composed of the officers and employees on the staff atHeadquarters. The accompanist for theorchestra and choir was Mrs. RalphLewis and the music was under the direction of Soror Violet Cowger, theinstructor of music and its harmonics inthe Rose-Croix University.

During the singing of the Indiansongs, Colombe Emeritus, Ruth Prell of San Francisco, a very accomplishedOriental dancer and interpreter of clas

sical dances, performed gracefully andsymbolically on the stage amid coloredlights, producing a marvelous effect,while the robed choir surrounded her in a huge crescent. It wa s a sight andan incident that will never be forgottenby those who were present. The musicalfeature was followed by an address bythe Imperator entitled The Inner Principles of Our Teachings and Their Application. He dealt at length on themanner in which our teachings can beapplied to meet the various problems

of our daily affairs and in a very simplemanner explained the application of theprinciples along new and helpful lines.

Among the many comments that Iheard after the meeting in my casualcontacts with members in every partof the park were those relating to theconveniences that had been arrangedfor all of the members, such as theeconomical meals that were prepared atthe store across the street from Rosicrucian Park, and the cooperation thathad been afforded by one of the large

churches of the city near the Park in preparing noontime meals for members.There was no attempt to increase pricesor to make the necessities of the occasion costly, but, in fact, to makeeverything as economical and convenient as possible. Nowhere were thereany solicitations during the meetings or  anywhere on the grounds of the parkfor donations or the purchase of unnecessary objects and articles. All of this has always been forbidden at all

of the Conventions. The regular supplydepartment was open for those whowanted to purchase some books or littlesouvenirs such as postcards or Egyptianarticles to take away, or as gifts for others, but there never is any attempt

to make these purchases appear to bean obligation of any kind. It is alw aysvery evident at these Conventions thatthe Supreme Lodge has gone to verygreat expense in providing every kindof convenient facility, pleasure, and en

 joyment. The large, beautiful souvenir programs, uniquely arranged and different in design each year, are unquestionably very costly, as are the badges,ribbons, and other things given to eachregistrant, and yet the only charge connected with the entire Convention isthe registration fee of $1.50, which notonly includes attendance at every session, all of the programs, souvenirs andother things, but also includes the magnificent banquet that is held on the lastday of the Convention in one of thelarge hotels of the city. The special musicians provided, the many decorations,flowers, and other things arranged for the Convention are unquestionably expensive yet willingly and gladly givento the Convention.

And I must not forget to say thatamong the many new additions andnew features at Rosicrucian Park whichpleased all of the members, was themagnificent outdoor mural painted byFrater Norman Gould Boswell, andwhich is perhaps the largest outdoor mural in this state, and depicts a coronation scene and reception given toAmenhotep IV in the height of hisglory and power.

Thursday. July 18

Early Thursday morning the lawnsand campus of Rosicrucian Park werefilled with members more enthusiasticand happy than ever. The slightly warmweather had cooled with a delightfulbreeze and the sun was shining brightly

cian Park, I could not help seeing theL'tgest hundreds of cars parked on all sideSeptember   streets and avenues leading to the park1935 and as I went along I deliberately

looked at the license plates on each car and was happy to see so many statesand sections of the country represented.In fact, the license plates seemed to readlike an index of the geography of NorthAmerica and all of them were display

ing on their windshields the RosicrucianConvention sticker.

A number of children were in attendance at the Convention this summer or were brought to the park each dayand allowed to play on the grounds andassemble in a small hall where theyhad various forms of amusement attimes. Also there appeared to be a number of wives and husbands with us thisyear who were not members and theywere furnished with chairs and seatsand given interesting reading matter 

but, of course, they could not attend thesessions of the Convention. I thinkour members would do well to keep thisin mind next year for a great manywere disappointed in finding that husbands, wives, sons, or daughters couldnot attend any of the Convention sessions. The large Convention hall is always crowded in its seating capacity bythe members and delegates and it wouldbe unfair to deprive a member of a seatin order to entertain a visitor who isnot a member. Furthermore , all of thesessions are private sessions, open onlyto those who are members in goodstanding . However, there is so muchsightseeing and so many delightfulthings to do during the day and especially during the morning hours up tonoontime that there is no reason whymembers who want to bring relativeswith them cannot do so.

Before noontime hundreds of themembers and delegates had formedthemselves into a great party and withscores of automobiles and buses jour

neyed to the building where the Rosicrucian Press, Ltd., is located. Thisbuilding is not on the grounds of Rosicrucian Park because of the residentialdistrict in which we are located and because of the great use of huge cases of paper and other printing materials, thebuilding for the Rosicrucian Press islocated in the city of San Jose near thefreight depot and near paper supplyhouses. The building itself is a magnificent three-story structure with great

columns in front and having more floor space than any other large printing planton the Pacific Coast. It stan ds amidbeautiful lawns like those at Rosicrucian Park and with such ample space

that every window affords the brightestof light for each department inside. Thebuilding and grounds constitute one of the city’s downtown sights and is always pointed out to visitors as one of San Jose’s prides.

The visitors and members were takenthrough every department from typesetting to the makeup of the pages, theprinting of all the books and magazines,the engraving, art, bookbinding andother features. Enormous presses andvery delicate instruments are found in

every floor of the building. The members were pleased to see the currentissue of The Rosicrucian Forum beingprinted and other pieces of our literature being prepared. M any of the members who will read the next issue of theForum magazine will be holding in their hands one of the very copies that theysaw going through the intricate equipment in the various departments.

Right after lunch the members beganto assemble on the lawns of the parkfor the great Convention picture that is

taken annually. Each year this picturehas to be larger, longer, and wider, anda huge grandstand has been built eachyear until this year when the number of delegates made it almost impossible toput up a circular grandstand largeenough. Therefore, the members wereassembled on the plaza before the Science Building and around the greatfountain. This gave the picture a newand interesting background and alloweda picture to be taken that was 45 inchesin length and 12 inches wide. It isone of the finest examples of photog

raphy and each of the hundreds of faces is very clear and distinct. Themembers seemed to be very proud of the picture which was sold to them direct by the photographer who makesthem at a nominal price without anyprofit going to the organization. Beforethe afternoon was over there were twofull-size finished pictures available andeverybody was extremely happy aboutthem. It is apparent to all today thatwe have reached the peak of our enroll

ment at this Convention. It is certainlythe largest and most enthusiastic groupof happy and determined members anddelegates we have ever had assembledin San Jose.

Their determination covers two important points: First , that everythingshall be done to give the administrationand the chief officers every opportunityto continue to carry out their ideas andideals without restriction or technicalinterference; and secondly, to investigateall of the silly and foolish charges thatMr. Clymer of Pennsylvania and hiscohorts have made in pamphlets issuedand mailed to our various branches andother places throughout the country justprior to the Convention with the hope,

no doubt, of interfering with the success of the Convention. As thesepamphlets containing the charges werepassed around among the members andespecially among the groups forming thecommittees, there were many merrylaughs and humorous comments over the ridiculous statements contained inthose pamphlets. As one delegate fromWashington, D. C., said, “CertainlyMr. Clymer never wrote and preparedthose malicious statements for readingand consumption by Rosicrucians, for the average member of the Order can

see the falsehoods in seventy-five per cent of the statements he makes whilethose who have visited Headquartersat Conventions can plainly see that thepamphlets are one hundred per centmalicious and false.” Imagine hundredsof members who have spent days goingthrough the Oriental Museum here atRosicrucian Park and seeing rare statues and articles sent here by theBritish Museum, the Museum in Berlinand in Cairo and bearing the seal of those museums and having the customs

labels attached, and then reading in Mr.Clymer’s book that the museum is afarce and contains no rare relics andnothing of any value or interest! Andthen imagine also these members whohave been in the Order for twelve yearsor more and most of them five years or more, having passed through so manyof the grades of study, reading in Mr.Clym er’s pamphlet that the AM O R Cteachings deal with black magic and theinane sex teachings and unsound, de

plorable writings of a man by the nameof Crowley who has an unenviable reputation in Europe, and has been referredto by us in our literature and teachingsas the last of any of the so-calledteachers of mysticism in the world

whose writings should be read or evenpossessed by any of our members. Everymember of A M O R C who has passedbeyond the third or fourth degreesknows precisely what the AM O R Cstand is in regard to the unhappy andundesirable writings and thoughts of Mr. Crowley. And every member beyond the first degree knows how carefully A M O R C advises its members toavoid any such teachings at any timeat the hands of any movement. And soour members apparently are enjoyingthe mad and fanatical claims of an individual who knows nothing about theA M O R C except that he desires to in

 jure it and destroy it. Is it any wonder that these members are determined tosee that nothing shall interfere with thework of the organization?

In every part of the various buildingscommittees are at work with thecommissioners and representatives asking various questions that were askedSunday night at the opening of the Convention, such as: Have you ever seenany signs of black magic teachings inA M O R C ? Have you ever seen anyteachings that resembled those that areattributed to Mr. Crowley? Have youever heard or seen anything in A M O R Cthat would confirm any of the chargesmade by Mr. Clymer, Mr. Batchelor, or any of their cohorts? From every individual comes the negative answer accompanied with the statement that thecharges are so absurd that they couldonly have been made by a person deliberately falsifying and attempting tolibel a decent organization.

At the one o’clock session Prof.Bailey of the Rose-Croix Universitydelivered an address on Religion and Science— Their Relationship. This eminent scientist who was an associate withmany of the great scientists in variousuniversities is always an inspiringspeaker when it comes to the subjectof scientific investigation. He was followed by a Forum discussion of variousRosicrucian principles and activities.

Letters and comments of greetings inthe form also of telegrams and cableswere read at the close of the meetingshowing that all the principal chaptersand lodges of the organization werevoicing their resentment at the recent

Clymer attack and pledging their unswerving devotion and loyalty.

The usual temple service and ritualwas held in the Supreme Temple latein the afternoon and as the dinner hour approached there was much evidenceof excitement regarding the evening program.

When the evening session convened,the first on the program was Frater Chapman of Vancouver, Canada, whosang several very beautiful numbers ina masterful way. He was followed bya lecture by the Supreme Secretary onRosicrucian Doctrines in which the Secretary outlined the various principlestaught in the different degrees showingwhat constituted a series of doctrineswhich the student might accept after hehad tested them and found them true,but which were not forced upon themembers on faith.

While the Supreme Secretary waslecturing, the great honorary initiationwas being held in the Supreme Temple,conducted by a staff of officers in

Egyptian robes and using an ancientEgyptian ritual. This evening is one of the big evenings of each annual Convention and is looked forward to by themembers as one of the outstanding sessions. In fact, two thirds of the members who come to our Convention eachyear come for the purpose of participating in this unusual Thursdaynight program. After the 100 membershad been initiated as honorary membersof the Supreme Lodge and were given atitle of Temple Builder, they joinedthe other many hundreds in the greatauditorium after a short recess to participate in the Imperator’s annual mystical feat. This is the second feature of the evening that makes the Thursdaynight of each Convention so gloriouslywonderful.

This year again the Imperator tookevery precaution to prevent the possibility of anyone claiming that any other principles were being used than those of a mystical or psychic nature. The hearty

cooperation he received through thepleasant vibrations of those present inthe crowded and packed auditoriummade possible results which were far more impressive than at any other time

in the past. The Imperator, standingalmost in their midst on the large platform, proved to the members and delegates that all of the esoteric principlescontained in the monographs are demonstrable. He proved that the humanaura could be made to move forwardand project into space. He proved thatmusical tones could be produced in theauditorium through psychic means soloud and distinct that they were easilyaudible and of a note and tone impossible to produce on any musical instrument. But after proving many other remarkable principles, he made his finalgrand demonstration in connection withsome writing held by one of thosepresent and who was selected by a littlechild present in the auditorium. Thechild selected various numbers in order to locate the individual who would bethe receiver of the Imperator’s demonstration. After the demonstration wasover the members present were enthusiastic in their examination of the proofsof the demonstration and in indorsingthe Imperator’s program as the most

wonderful ever given. UndoubtedlyMr. Clymer and his cohorts and thosewho are attempting to injure the organization will make much meat of these demonstrations and continue tocall those who were present and witnessed them, ‘‘gullible individuals.”However, the members take this lightly,considering the type of mind that condemns others and look upon it with thesame amusement as they did the titleconferred on all of them by the editor of a Canadian magazine who said thatno smart persons attended the Conven

tions but merely “ flapdoodles.”

Friday, July 19

This being the last day of the officialbusiness activities of the Convention,the grounds of Rosicrucian Park werebuzzing with busy delegates and members flitting from place to place, roomto room, and building to building, participating in the activities of the variouscommittees in preparing their reports

and in compiling the evidence thatwould refute the malicious charges recently made against AMORC.

There was a special session in the

morning of the Junior Order and thematrons of various groups throughoutthe country gave brief talks on thework they are accomplishing. Greatthanks is due the officers, young andold, connected with the Junior Order for the marvelous work that is accomplished and for the great growth of thismovement throughout North America.At the close of this forum of the Junior Order, a special initiation of the Juniorstook place and demonstrated the seriousmanner in which the young people conduct a ritualistic ceremony.

Immediately after lunch the variouscommittees began to gather their reports together and have them certifiedby a notary and signed individually bythe scores of prominent persons from allparts of the country who were actualmembers of each committee and actuallyparticipated in the search and studyconducted by such committees.

In the middle of the afternoon thecommittees began to make their reportsto the Convention, reading them at

great length and allowing the assembledConvention to pa ss on each report. Itwas interesting to note that despite thefact that ‘‘The Rosicrucian Digest” for many months prior to the Conventioncarried a notice urging every member to file with his District Commissioner or Inspector General or with his lodge or chapter any letter of complaint, recommendation, or criticism, the variousCommissioners, lodges, and chapters reported that they had received no critical comments nor any demands for anyinvestigation of any kind from any mem

ber. A resolution was presented andunanimously accepted by the Convention to the effect that the reports andfindings of the committees be embodiedin a new booklet or pamphlet to beprinted by AM O R C and put into circulation among its members some timeearly in the fall of this year.

As the evening hours approached wenoticed that preparations were beingmade for the great pageant to take

place on the campus and grounds of the park and finally all members anddelegates were requested to assemblein the auditorium so that while theywere within the building the groundsoutside might be transformed as if by

magic into a fairyland of lights andcolor. While assembled in the auditorium various addresses were made byofficers and the attorney for the organization, State Assemblyman Clifford C.Cottrell, addressed the Convention anddescribed to them the true and correctlegal status of AMORC as he had determined it from a year’s investigationand refuting those charges made bythe few enemies that involved legaltechnicalities. He pointed out to theConvention how the attacks on theA M O R C were being carried on by thesame conspirators who had attemptedto injure the organization for twelveor more years and how the best peopleof this community and of the staterecognized in A M O R C an organizationof a high and idealistic nature beingunnecessarily and unfortunately hampered or criticized in its work by mercenary conspirators.

When the time came for the Convention to adjourn to see the pageant, thesky had darkened but the moonlight was

glorious and with the other coloredlights on the lawns and plaza, the members gathered in a huge semi-circle towitness what all claimed to be the mostnovel and impressive outdoor programever held by our organization. Themusic for the evening was under thecare of Soror Cowger again, whileFrater Lafferty was in charge of thedancing. A number of symbolical dancesperformed by Colombes and youngwomen of the Order, in special Orientalcostumes, illustrated the mystical principles of our Order and their applica

tion to life, and in rhythmic dances andtableaus portrayed the spiritual principles of life. With the fountain of living waters playing with all of itsgorgeous colors in the center of thepageant, the scene with the palm trees

T he and Egyptian buildings in the back-Rosicrucian ground was one of gorgeous splendor Digest like the most elaborate setting that theSeptember  greatest of theatrical producers have1935 ever attempted.

Returning again to the auditorium,the session continued until almost midnight with many resolutions being offered by the members and testifyingto the whole-hearted support of thepresent administration and officers and

demanding that these officers be givengreater leniency and freedom from restrictions that may have hampered themin the past. These resolutions approvedand ratified everything that the officershad done during the previous year.More trips to Europe on the part of theSupreme Officers were recommended ina number of resolutions because of thevalued information brought back to theOrder through each one of the journeys, and these resolutions were adoptedunanimously by the members despitethe fact that the chairman and the Imperator solicited objections or commentsfrom any person who was present. Thevarious audits of the books of the Order dating back to 1916, as made by certified accountants of the State of California who are not members of the Order and by other officers outside of theOrder, were ratified, verified, andadopted by the Convention, showingthat there was not a discrepancy of asingle penny nor a misappropriation or even an instance of poor judgment inany of the monetary or material ac

tivities of the organization. The Convention also adopted a resolution unanimously that Mr. Clymer and his cohorts be notified by telegram or otherwise to the effect that this Conventionhad thoroughly investigated all of hiscriticisms regarding the financial wrongsand other acts on the part of the executives and that they whole-heartedlycondemned his statements as maliciousand untrue. I saw the telegram beingsent and it cannot be said now thatthese critics have not been warned thattheir statements are contrary to whatthe members of the organization havefound and reported in the records.

As a part of this closing session of the Convention the members enjoyed avery instructive and humorous addressby the Grand Treasurer, Harvey Miles,on The Threefold Path of Plato.

Brief addresses were also made byother executives of the organization andFrater Malcolm Jelks, executive-presi-dent of the newly formed Rose-Croix

University Alumni, presented to the Imperator an engraved scroll pledging theallegiance of the graduates to the principles and high ideals of the organization.

Before the close of this session thenew Grand Councilors for 1936 wereelected by the Convention after the retiring Grand Councilors held a businessmeeting in another room and had rendered an annual report in accordancewith the constitution. It w as decidedby the Grand Councilors that the position of Inspector-General and GrandCouncilor should not always be combined in one person and that a GrandCouncilor could appoint one or more inspectors under him to look after matters

in his jurisdiction. Th e Grand Councilors who were elected for the comingyear are listed in the box at the endof this article.

Mrs. Marie Clemens remains as theInspector for the Massachusetts districtin order that she may keep in contactwith the various groups and chaptersin that part of the country, and an Inspector General will be appointed byGrand Councilor Landis to cover thecities of Philadelphia and a few in theState of New Jersey. Other inspectors

that are appointed throughout the year will be announced from time to time inThe Rosicrucian Digest.

I want to take this opportunity of saying that throughout the Conventionweek after the ceremonies and sessionshad ended, all of the larger hotels andrestaurants in the heart of the city werepatronized by groups of the memberswho enjoyed refreshments, dancing,music, and discussions into the weehours of the morning. In talking tosome of the hotel managers yesterday,

I found them making the same comments as on previous years; namely, thatthe Rosicrucians represent a very highclass of individuals and are greatly desired by all of the hotels and stores because of the liberal patronage and rational and cultured attitude and cleanliness o f habits. It brought to my mindwhat the American Express Companyofficials said regarding the Rosicruciantour to Egypt in 1929. They stated thatall of their branches in various citiesreported that hotels, store, steamships,

sightseeing conductors a n d othersclaimed that the Rosicrucians conductedthemselves in a more intelligent, refined and cultured manner than anyother body of tourists they ever dealt

with. The hotels here in this city appreciate the fact that during the sparehours of the week there was no improper conduct in any of the rooms or lobbiesof the hotels and a complete absenceof that carelessness and boisterous conduct that is found in nearly all other convention groups. Th e members seemedto be too happy to think of anythingelse but the great joy of living and thepleasure of being here in this Valley of Heart's Delight.

Saturday, July 20

The morning and afternoon of thisday were given over to sightseeing onthe part of those members from distantcities who desired to see the beautifulPacific Ocean and the coast line of thispart of the State, or the great redwoodtrees that are thousands of years old,or the beautiful sights in the mountainsand valleys surrounding the Bay District. Other groups were taken throughthe Science Building and given further 

demonstrations in the chamber of lightand color while the Supreme Officerscompleted the matter of routine interviews with those who were from distantpoints.

At six o’clock the members and delegates assembled at the Hotel St. Clairewhere once again the great banquet wasqiven as a token of love on the part of A M O RC . Everyone was dressed inhis best and with a happy smile on hisface anticipating as usual the gaiety and

 joy of this elaborate banquet. Be cause

of the huge number of persons present,the diners had to be divided into themain dining room and some adjoiningrooms, while microphones were provided so that the statements made at thespeakers’ table could be heard in eachof the rooms. Mystery prizes were givento the members by means of a drawing.Many beautiful Egyptian and other articles were received by the winnerswho were all very greatly pleased. Telegrams of greeting from chapters andlodges and other officers were read from

the speakers’ table and the variousGrand Lodge officers commented humorously upon pleasant incidents thatoccurred during the Convention week.

One of the pleasant incidents of theevening occurred when the Imperator 

introduced to the members and delegates his aged parents who were seatedat one of the tables, and who had recently come from New York to visit theImperator during the Convention period.They were given a round of applausewhile the Imperator paid touching tribute to them.

During the banquet piano solos wererendered by little Miss Sonia Hayward,eleven-year-old prodigy, whose parentsare members of Francis Bacon Lodgein San Francisco.

At nine o’clock the banquet endedand the members all looked toward thegreat dance held at the San JoseWoman’s Club a few squares distantfrom the hotel. Here the Kep her-R aClub, an organization composed exclusively of the fifty or more young womenemployees of AM O R C , sponsored thebanquet dance which was a greater suc

cess than at any time in the past andlasted until the morning hours, thus closing a very happy Convention week ina glorious period of music and rhythm.

One would have expected the groundsof Rosicrucian Park to have looked

abandoned the next day— Sunday— butas a matter of fact, many members arestill remaining for further interviews andto sit in the shady grounds and meditate. Over and over again they have saidto me, “It is so hard to leave and gohome!”

Throughout the Convention sessionsofficial secretaries took copious notesand complete records of every speechmade, every resolution passed, and every act performed . Each speech andresolution has been certified to beforea notary and once more a great Convention passes into history, and notableagain is the fact that there was no condition of strife, no contest, and no unhappiness.

I hope I shall live to see many moresuch Conventions and welcome againon each occasion hundreds who havenever been here before.

H e received most of his sch ooling at Christ Church, Oxfor d, u ntil hisardent enthusiasm for the Quaker belief and his evident dislike for the Church of Englandprom pted extrem e actions on his part and caused him to be expelled . His fa ther hoped,that travel on the Continent would help to change his view-points but he clung tenaciouslyto his faith. H e studied law and later became a minister, preaching and writin g treatiseswhich often caused his imprisonment. His most famous one was written wh ile in prisonin vindication of his be liefs and was entitled, “ No Cross, No Crown, and Innocency W ithHer Own Open Face.”

Circumstances turned his attention to the New W orld , ho wever, and in 1681 Penn obtainedfrom the crown a grant of territory which is now the state of Pennsylvania, and in doing-this realized his great ambition to establish in America a home for his coreligionists wherethey m ight preach and practice their convictions unm olested. In 1682 he foun ded thecapitol, which was later called Philadelphia, a name beloved to all Rosicrucians, because itwas the location of the first Rosicrucian Headquarters in America in 1694. They were alsoknown as Philadelphians. Not only Quakers but persecuted members of other rel igions s o u g h t   refuge i n h i s c o l o n y w h e r e f r o m th e f ir s t   the  p r in c ip le s  o f  t o l e r a t i o n w e r e   

established by law. Penn m ade himself famous by his peaceful negotiations with theIndians, which resulted in a lasting treaty of peace. H is colony thrivin g successfully, hethen returned to England and through his influence obtained the release of hundreds of persons who were imprisoned on account of their religious beliefs. The latter part of hislife was involved in periodic charges of treason and conspiracy against the crown, acquittals,and finally his financial ruin because o f the treache ry of his steward. La ter he was strickenwith paralysis and passed through transition May 30th, 1718.

Below are some excerpts of his Reflections and Maxims relating to the conduct of humanlife, which, though written over two centuries ago, are sti l l f i l led with practical andapplicable rules for modern l iving.

REFLECTIONS AND MAXIMS

And yet few peopleknow themselves; no, not their ownbodies, the houses of their  minds, the most curious structure in the world; aliving, walking tabernacle; nor the worldof which it was made, and out of whichit is fed; which would be so much our benefit, as well as our pleasure, toknow. W e cannot doubt of this whenwe are told that the “invisible thingsof God are brought to light by thethings that are seen;” and consequentlywe read our duty in them, as often as

we look upon them, to him that is thegreat and wise author of them, if welook as we should do.

The world is certainly a great andstately volume of natural things, andmay be not improperly stiled the hieroglyphics of a better; but, alas, howvery few leaves of it do we seriouslyturn over! This ought to be the subjectof the education of our youth; who, attwenty, when they should be fit for business, know little or nothing of it.

Inconsideration

The want of due consideration is thecause of all the unhappiness man bringsupon himself. For his second thoughtsrarely agree with the first; which pass

not without considerable retrenchmentor correction. And yet that sensiblewarning is, too frequently, not precaution enough for his future conduct.

Well may we say, “Our infelicity isof ourselves;” since there is nothing wedo that we should not do, but we knowit, and yet do it.

Disappointment and Resignation

For disappointments, that come notby our own folly, they are the trials

or corrections of heaven; and it is our own fault, if they prove not our advantage.

To repine at them does not mend thematter; it is only to grumble at our Creator. But to see the hand of Godin them, with an humble submission tohis will, is the way to turn our water into wine, and engage the greatest loveand mercy on our side.

W e needs must disorder ourselves, if we only look at our losses. But if weconsider how little we deserve what isleft, our passion will cool, and our murmurs will turn into thankfulness.

If our hairs fall not to the ground,less to we, or our substance, withoutGod’s providence.

Nor can we fall below the arms of God, how low soever it be we fall.

For though our Saviour's passion isover, his compassion is not. Tha t never fails his humble, sincere disciples. Inhim they find more than all that theylose in the world.

Discipline

If thou wouldst be happy and easy inthy family, above all things observediscipline.

Every one in it should know their duty; and there should be a time andplace for everything; and, whatever elseis done or omitted, be sure to beginand end with God.

Industry

Love labour: for if thou does not wantit for food, thou mayst for physic. Itis wholesome for thy body, and goodfor thy mind. It prevents the fruitsof idleness, which many times come of nothing to do, and lead too many to dowhat is worse than nothing.

A garden, a laboratory, a workhouse,improvements, and breeding, are pleasant and profitable diversions to the idleand ingenious; for here they miss illcompany, and converse with nature andart; whose varieties are equally gratefuland instructing, and preserve a goodconstitution of body and mind.

Temperance

To this a spare diet contributes much.Eat therefore to live, and do not live

to eat. That is like a man, but thisbelow a beast.

Have wholesome, but not costly food;and be rather cleanly than dainty inordering it.

The receipts of cookery are swelledto a volume, but a good stomach excelsthem all; to which nothing contributesmore than industry and temperance.

It is a cruel folly to offer up toostentation so many lives of creatures,as to make up the state of our treats;

as it is a prodigal one to spend morein sauce than in meat.

The proverb says, ‘‘That enough is asgood as a feast;” but it is certainlybetter, if superfluity be a fault, whichnever fails to be at festivals.

If thou rise with an appetite, thou aresure never to sit down without one.

Rarely drink but when thou art dry;nor then, between meals, if it can beavoided.

The smaller the drink, the clearer thehead, and the cooler the blood, whichare great benefits in temper and business.

Strong liquors are good at some times,

and in small proportions; being better for physic than food; for cordials, thancommon use.

The most common things are the mostuseful; which shews both the wisdomand goodness of the great Lord of thefamily of the world.

What, therefore, he has made rare,do not thou use too commonly; lest thoushouldst invert the use and order of things, become wanton and voluptuous,and thy blessings prove a curse.

“Let nothing be lost,” said our Sa

viour; but that is lost that is misused.Neither urge another to that thou

wouldst be unwilling to do thyself; nor do thyself what looks to thee unseemlyand intemperate in another.

All excess is ill; but drunkenness isof the worst sort. It spoils health, dismounts the mind, and unmans men. Itreveals secrets, is quarrelsome, lascivious, impudent, dangerous, and mad. Infine, he that is drunk is not man; becausehe is so long void of reason, that distinguishes a man from a beast.

Friendship

Friendship is the next pleasure wemay hope for; and where we find itnot at home, or have no home to findit in, we may seek it abroad. It is anunion of spirits, a marriage of hearts,and the bond thereof virtue.

There can be no friendship wherethere is no freedom. Friendship lovesa free air, and will not be penned up instraight and narrow inclosures. It will

speak freely, and act so too; and takenothing ill, where no ill is meant; nay,where it is, it will easily forgive, andforget, upon small acknowledgments.

Friends are true twins in soul; theysympathize in every thing, and havethe same love and aversion.

One is not happy without the other;nor can either of them be miserablealone. As if they could change bodies,they take their turns in pain as well asin pleasure; relieving one another intheir most adverse conditions.

W hat one enjoys, the other cannotwant. Like the primitive Christians, theyhave all things in common, and noproperty, but in one another.

Rules of Conversation

Avoid company, where it is not profitable or necessary; and on those occasions speak little, and last.

Silence is wisdom where speaking isfolly, and always safe.

Some are so foolish, as to interruptand anticipate, those that speak, instead of hearing and thinking beforethey answer; which is uncivil, as wellas silly.

If thou thinkest twice before thou

speakest once, thou wilt speak twicethe better for it.Better say nothing, than not to the

purpose. And to speak pertinently, consider both what is fit, and when it isfit, to speak.

In all debates, let truth be thy aim;not victory, or an unjust interest; andendeavour to gain, rather than to expose, thy antagonist.

Give no advantage in argument, nor lose any that is offered. This is a benefit which arises from temper.

Do not use thyself to dispute againstthine own judgment, to shew wit; lestit prepare thee to be too indifferentabout what is right; nor against another man, to vex him, or for mere trial of skill; since to inform, or to be informed,ought to be the end of all conferences.

Temper 

Nothing does reason more right thanthe coolness of those that offer it; for truth often suffers more by the heat of its defenders, than from the argumentsof its opposers.

Zeal ever follows an appearance of truth, and the assured are too apt tobe warm; but it is their weak side inargument; zeal being better shewnagainst sin, than persons, or their mistakes.

Truth

Where thou art obliged to speak, besure to speak the truth; for equivocationis half-way to lying, as lying the wholeway to hell.

Knowledge

Knowledge is the treasure, but judgment the treasurer, of a wise man.

He that has more knowledge than judgment, is made for another man ’s

use more than his own.It cannot be a good constitution,

where the appetite is great, and thedigestion weak.

There are some men, like dictionaries,to be looked into upon occasions: buthave no connection, and are little entertaining.

Less knowledge than judgment, willalways have the advantage upon theinjudicious knowing man.

A wise man makes what he learns hisown; the other shews he is but a copy,

or a collection at most.

Industry

Industry is certainly very commendable, and supplies the want of parts.

Patience and diligence, like faith, remove mountains.

Never give out while there is hope;but hope not beyond reason; for thatshews more desire than judgment.

Balance

W e must not be concerned above thevalue of the thing that engages us; nor raised above reason, in maintaining whatwe think reasonable.

It is too common an error, to invertthe order of things, by making an endof that which is a means, and a meansof that which is an end.

Religion and government escape notthis mischief; the first is too often madea means, instead of an end; the other an end, instead of a means.

Thus men seek wealth, rather thansubsistence; and the end of cloaths isthe least reason of their use. Nor isthe satisfying of our appetite our endin eating, so much as the pleasing of our palate. The like may also be saidof building, furniture, etc., where theman rules not the beast, and appetitesubmits not to reason.

It is great wisdom to proportion our esteem to the nature of the thing; for as that way things will not be under

valued, so neither will they engage usabove their intrinsic worth.

If we suffer little things to have greathold upon us, we shall be as much transported for them, as if they deserved it.

It is an old proverb, " Maxima bella ex levissimis c a u s i s The greatest feudshave had the smallest beginnings.

No matter what the subject of thedispute be, but what place we give itin our minds; for that governs our concern and resentment.

It is one of the fatalest errors of our lives, when we spoil a good cause by anill management; and it is not impossiblebut we may mean well in an ill business; but that will not defend it.

If we are but sure the end is right,we are too apt to gallop over all boundsto compass it; not considering, thatlawful ends may be very unlawfullyattained.

Let us be careful to take just ways tocompass just things; that they may lastin their benefits to us.

There is a troublesome humour somemen have, that if they may not lead,they will not follow; but had rather athing were never done, than not donetheir own way, though otherwise verydesirable.

This comes of an overfulness of ourselves, and shows we are more concerned for praise, than the success of what we think a good thing.

Patience

Patience is a virtue everywhere; butit shines with greatest lustre in the menof government.

Some are so proud or testy, they willnot hear what they should redress.

Others so weak, they sink, or burst,under the weight of their office; thoughthey can lightly run away with the salary of it.

Business can never be well done, thatis not well understood; which cannotbe without patience.

It is cruelty, indeed, not to give theunhappy an hearing, whom we oughtto help; but it is the top of oppressionto brow-beat the humble and modestmiserable, when they seek relief.

Some, it is true, are unreasonable intheir desires and hopes; but then weinform, not rail at and reject them.

It is, therefore, as great an instanceof wisdom as a man in business can

give, to be patient under the imperti-nencies and contradictions that attend it.Method goes far to prevent trouble

in business; for it makes the task easy,hinders confusion, saves abundance of time, and instructs those that have depending, what to do, and what to hope.

Popularity

Affect not to be seen, and men willless see thy weakness.

They that show more than they are,raise an expectation they cannot answer;and so lose their credit, as soon as theyare found out.

Avoid popularity. It has many snares,and no real benefit to thyself; and uncertainty to others.

H E p h i l o s o p h e r ,P l a to , a d v a n c e sbeyond his greatteacher, Aristotle,

in giving to mankind a concept of soul. He beginswith a recognitionof the duality of man; the body, ont h e o n e h a n d ,ear th ly , mor ta l ,transient, fallible,and the soul, on

the other hand, as infallible, perfect,and the only true reality. He recognizes a conflict between the two, that

the body, through the desires and passions, is constantly drawn to earthlythings, and the soul is forced into thebackground and denied; that the soulis nailed to the body while the body isinterested in transient things, and that

temporal things, and permit his soul tosoar unfettered.

body, and he advises temporary deathson earth. By this he does not mean destruction of the physical body, but thatman should free his mind and consciousness from physical, material interestsand permit his consciousness to soar into the spiritual realm and to temporarily at least free the soul from its encumbrances. Plato believed that the soulcould be perfected only through thehigher ideals; that is, the inherent ideaswe have of beauty and of love constitute the knowledge of the soul, thedivine essence of the soul, and man canperfect his soul by aspiring to idealshere on earth which are in harmony or accord with these divine ideas. Th us

man should interest himself in the cultura l th ings , shou ld seek beauty ,whether it is in art, music, or sculpture,and thus lift himself upward, liberatingand perfecting his soul.

Plato offers three proofs in his dialogue, the Phaedo, of the existence andimmortality of the soul. The first is theproof of generation. Tha t is, he declared that all opposites generate eachother. A waking state is the result of aformer sleeping one, and thus a living

state is the result of a dead one; and if there were only a series of successivedeaths, generation along one line only,eventually all things and everyonewould be dead. But deaths generate the

living, and thus there is maintained aconstant balance.The next proof he offers is the indis

solubility of the soul. Th e body is composed of many elements, is transient,changing, fallible, but the soul is not. Itis of one nature, constant, permanent,and not dissoluble. He relates how, if it is possible for the mortal body to bepreserved for many, many years by embalming, such as was the practice of theancient Egyptians, that certainly thesoul which all men recognize as being

the higher and finer nature of manshould exist far longer, and therefore itmust be immortal.

His third, final, and more emphaticproof that the soul is not destroyed atdeath is the recollection of its knowledge. Men who are not educated andeven illiterate may reason properly andmay come to the correct conclusionwhen a profound problem is properlypresented to them. Th is proves that theknowledge they utilized to solve theproblem was not acquired from without,but through meditation, through introspection, through awakening the knowledge of the soul. Since this knowledgewas not given to them during their lifetime, it must have been possessed bythem at birth; must have come into their being with their soul, and is proof,therefore, that the soul of man is immortal, and exists in many bodies over a course of time.

With Aristotle, we find the conception of soul following lines which aredistinctly biological and psychological.In fact, psychology began with Aris

totle. Th e basis of Aristotle’s philosophy is not mathematical like so manyof his predecessors, but biological.Therefore, his concept of soul is an intermingling of both psychological andbiological principles.

He begins with organic matter. Allorganic matter has the property of motion, and Aristotle refers to that motionas the soul of matter. Soul is, therefore,the form of matter. Matter is alwayssubordinate to the form which it takesin the philosophy of Aristotle. The soul

in man, Aristotle declared, was unmoved, yet it moved man. In this senseAristotle did not mean merely the locomotion of man’s body, but he meantmovement in a sense of feeling, and

emotions. M an ’s soul, however, reachedits state by a process of developmentand attainment. A distinguishing characteristic of Aristotle's psychology andconcept of soul is that he did not consider man alone, possessed of soul, butthat other living things had souls aswell.

He traced the evolution of man’s soulfrom plant life. Th e soul of a plant isits functions of nutrition and reproduction. The ability it has to nourish itself and reproduce its kind, that stands as

form in contrast to the matter of substance of the plant. Th e soul of the animal, or its form, in Aristotle’s sense of form, is its locomotion and sensation,the ability to move itself at will and tohave sensations. Th e soul of man is theuniversal ideas he has, the inherent instinctive ideas, and his reason. But manhas not lost the souls of the lower formsout of which he evolved. Th ese continue to exist in man, but they now become associated with his body. In other words, the plant soul becomes merely a

function of man ’s body— nutrition andreproduction. Th e animal soul, locomotion and sensation, are also just a function of his body.

Furthermore, Aristotle recognized thefive objective senses of man. He saidthere were five channels by which external impulses were carried to a sixthsense located in the region of man’sheart, and there these external impulseswere translated into sensations whichgave man the ideas and concepts or perceptions he had of things of the outside

world, and these ideas and conceptswere then registered in his memory andconstituted his empirical or objectiveknowledge. And such knowledge wasthe lesser knowledge of man’s nature;the greater knowledge was the knowledge of the soul, the universal ideas andreason. Th e soul of man, to Aristotle,was the highest soul, and upon death itreturned to what Aristotle termed theunmoved movent, the primary universalthought and idea which impregnated allthings, which gave motion to all things,

and caused all things to advance inscale.

W e should, most of us, be quitefamiliar with the Christian conception of soul. Naturally , the fundamental Ch ris

tian conception of soul is modified bythe various interpretations of the different sects. Gene rally speaking , Christianity considers the soul as having acontinuous conscious existence. Thesoul has, in other words, according tothe general Christian view, a self-awareness. Th e Christian recognizesthe duality of man, the mortal physicalbody on one hand, and the soul— thespiritual life or being o f man— on theother. It now declares that both are of God — something, incidentally, whichthe early Christian s did not. Also,

Christianity declares that the soul is notabsorbed into God, but retains its separate identity, and it does not, as Hinduand Buddhist philosophies contend, become completely absorbed into the universal mind of God.

Furthermore, Christianity does notrecognize (now this may be a point of controversy, but the controversy merelyarises out of the differences of interpretation) the perfection of the soul.The soul of man to the Christian isimperfect until it has been purified, till

it goes through the process of salvation.Next we have the Rosicrucian ver

sion. Th e Rosicrucian begins with therecognition of the duality of man’s nature also— the physical earthly bodycomposed of the dust of the earth, imbued with spirit energy, the same as allanimate and inanimate things. N o distinction is made between the physicalnature of man’s body insofar as its general elements are concerned, and that of any other substance. All are consideredmundane. Then it recognizes the soul,as a spiritual and divine essence resident within this body during the periodof earthly existence. The Rosicrucianalso declares that the soul is unshapen;that is, that the soul has no definite,

l&es of an energy, just as a thought has noSeptember  physical form, yet may give rise within1935 the consciousness to the idea of form.

The Rosicrucian declares that thesoul in man is not a separate entity,broken off, distinct from the soul of allother beings, but is a part of a universal soul energy which flows through allhumans equally and alike, and the soul

in the most degraded individual is justas pure and just as divine as the soul inthe highly illuminated and spiritualbeing; that the difference which exists isa matter of interpretation, and a reacting to the soul force, just as the electrical energy which flows along an electrical circuit may cause some bulbs inthat circuit to give forth a blue light andothers a pure white light, but the quality of the electrical current is the samein all instances.

The soul, therefore, in man is at all

times perfect, and it cannot be perfected. To dec lare that the soul can beperfected, the Rosicrucian contends, isto admit of its imperfection, and theRosicrucian states that since the soulemanates from a divine source and isthe only divine essence in man, are weto declare that divinity is imperfect bystating that the soul should be perfected?

The soul manifests in each of us differently, in each body, due to the mental development of the individual, and

due to his ability to react, as said before, to the spiritual force within him.The ego or personality of the individualis that which must be perfected. As wedevelop and perfect our ego and inner personality, we eventually come to appreciate, comprehend and realize thesoul force within us. W e correct our thinking, correct our ways of living, andpermit the soul to express itself withouthindrance, and thus we find some individuals more illuminated than others,more spiritual than others in manifestation; but in essence all are spirituallyalike, declares the Rosicrucian.

It is only fair to round out and conclude this discourse on the evolution of the soul concept, by a brief consideration of a rather new metaphysical andpsychological version. This concept isa combination of abstract metaphysicsand modern psychology. Undoubtedlymany of you will not be in accord withit and perhaps feel that it is radicallywrong. W e are merely presenting it

here just as we presented the earlier primitive concepts to give you as nearlyas possible the complete history of abasic idea.

This modern concept begins with the

declaration that man has always giventhe name soul, or its equivalent, to certain different characteristics of his nature; that is, characteristics which areapart from his physical ones. Th esecharacteristics which he has named“soul” are certain sensations of his ownbeing.

Now man is aware and realizes various sensations. Fir st are the outer sensations. Th e impulses of light, heat,and sound, generate within us certaindefinite sensations which give us an

awareness of the outside world; that is,the world outside of ourselves. But inaddition to those, there are inner sensations which we are also aware of, whichwe cannot deny, and which we distinctly separate from the sensations of hardness, cold, warmth, etc. Th eseinner sensations are the emotions. For example, the emotions of love, hate,envy, and fear—who has not felt them?W ho has not distinguished them fromouter sensations?

Emotions, it is contended, are not aproduct of intelligence. An individualneed not be highly intelligent or well-educated to have an awareness of hisemotions. Th e aborigine and the highlyintellectual being, alike, have an emotional self and are equally aware of these emotions. Th ese emotions, weknow, can be stimulated from without.Certain things we experience in our daily life stimulate the emotions of hate,fear, love and envy, and it is easy for usto trace the stimulus to some outer sensation, the result of some experience wehave had. Character, after all. is merely

the regulation of these emotions, it isfurther declared. W here we refer to anindividual as being a noble character, acommendable character, we mean theindividual who properly regulates andcontrols and keeps within bounds hisemotions, which means that the individual has applied his reason and will insupervising, directing and controllinghis emotions.

The emotions are not only provokedor generated by sensations arising fromwithout, for they may be provoked from

within, from causes which are just asdefinite as outside causes. Th ese inner causes of the emotions are the instincts.It is declared that these instincts inherent in all humans are attributes of soul,

for it is stated, if you are going to namethose characteristics which you declareare the soul characteristics of your being, what would you say they are?W ou ld you not refer to the immanentimpulses and urges of yourself, and arenot these inner impulses and urgestraceable to the fundamental instincts?

Of course, some may say (so the exponents of this new theory declare) soulis intelligence, but are not also, (theyreply) the instincts intelligent? W hatare some of our instincts? The re are

the instincts of repulsion, of curiosity,of self-assertion, and preservation. Arethese instincts not for man’s own welfare? Do they not seem to be concernedwith his protection and good? And isnot that a display of intelligence? Whenthe instinct of repulsion causes us tohave a feeling of repugnance for something which would be injurious to us, isthat not intelligence? The instinct of self-preservation causes us to avoiddanger or defend ourselves against destruction, is that not also intelligence?

When there is the instinct of self-assertion, to move as an individual, to act asan individual, to follow individual impulses and thoughts, is that not intelligence? Then we must admit, these exponents declare, that instinct is intelligence.

They explain also by this method,personality. Th ey declare it is the individual analysis of  one’s own feelings and an adjustment of our mental andphysical life to those feelings? In other words, the way we react to our emo

tions, which are the sensations of our instincts, determines our personality.So, they conclude, that the soul ideawith man begins when he has a realization of the inner sensations of his being.

According to this doctrine, it does notsuffice merely to say that the distinguishing characteristic of soul is the factthat it is an inner intelligence, aside andapart from the reason and brain faculties of man, because it has been broughtout here in this theory that instincts areobviously an intelligence.

An d then we must consider life— thelife force of the body. W e find lifeshowing the same signs of intelligenceas instincts. W e find, for instance, theplant adjusting itself to its environmentinstinctively without any realization of 

why it does so. W e find it seeking sunlight, turning toward it or avoiding it, if necessary, for its existence. W e findplants seeking water. Th is intelligenceis instinctive in the plant. Th is intelligence ceases with the absence of life.Therefore, the conclusion is that lifeand instincts are one, or at least the instincts are an attribute or quality of life.

At this point it becomes difficult todistinguish between life and its intelligence and soul and its intelligence. So,this theory contends that the life forceand soul force are one. In higher or

ganisms such as man, where the organof brain has become complex and highlydeveloped, there is a particular sensitivity to the sensations, of the instinctsor life force; and when a being becomessensitive to these inner sensations, hehas the consciousness of self, a realization of “ I” , and he defines this inner self as the soul. Plan ts do not havesuch a complex organism as man’s brain,and neither do the many animals. Th usthey lack his highly developed self-consciousness. But after declaring thatlife and soul are one, they then begin to

question seriously whether life is reallyan intelligence, whether what we consider the intelligence of life is notmerely the natural order of the life forcein man. In other words, they declare,life is either a universal energy or force,

or the result of the combination of several energies, which makes matter animate, and has a distinctive order of itsown. If it did not have that order, itwould not be life. It would be something else. Natu ral ly it tries to preserve

its order, not because of intelligence,but because the maintenance of its order is more natural than to change to something else.

Therefore, the life force in man endeavors to maintain its existence as adistinctive order. It naturally opposesand repels any conditions, any influences which would have a tendency todisturb it, and any irritations or aggravations set up internal sensations andthese sensations are the instincts whichmanifest as emotions. In other words, itis maintained that the instincts of man

are merely the result of conditions whichaggravate or attempt to disturb the natural harmony of the life force in thebody, as the result of life’s adjustmentto environment and the ceaseless motionof life’s order.

Since the instincts produce sensations,which compel the body to adjust itself to a state which is agreeable to the lifeforce within man, man considers thisadjustment as an intelligence rather than merely a natural reaction, and prefers to call this intelligence soul. Th isis, therefore, the modern speculative

metaphysical and psychological conceptof soul which has not as yet gainedmuch ground, and naturally will be opposed on all sides.

This concludes our sketch of theevolution of the concept of soul.
