We Rotari- ans, people of like mind and soul, try to communi- cate our ideas and thoughts through our organiza- tion’s official magazine, The Rotarian. It is the magazine that brings us the theme, the vision and the message of every new RI President. It gives us vital statistics of our organization’s successes throughout the world. It showcases inspiring sto- ries of ordinary men and women (like you and I) doing extra-ordinary things to help our fellow man. Finally, it is the thread that brings us all together into the kinship that we call the ―Family of Rotary‖. Yes, even in this world of instant commu- nication and social media, where ―Texting‖ and ―Twittering‖ compositions of short incomplete sen- tences is the wave of the future, it is my hope that the planet never fails to underestimate the power of reading and writing the printed word. It is the written words in the magazine that have given us an insight into the mind of our founder Paul Har- ris, who wrote in the second edition of The Na- tional Rotarian, the following: One of the most powerful influences in the civilization of this day is the press and yet many American journals, whose tremendous circulations constitute indu- bitable proof of their influence and power, wield such influence and power with about the same tender regard to principle and truth as would a bar room full of drunken sailors. It is hoped that The National Rotarian may possess an influence and the power to spread the principles of Rotary throughout the land and that its publishers may never be- come unmindful of the fact that the ac- quisition of influence and power means the assumption of great responsibility. What a wonderful quote to remember in the month of April, the Magazine Month in Rotary. I thought I would wear a historian’s hat this month and tell you a little bit about The Rotarian maga- zine. The first issue, called The National Rotar- ian, was published in January of 1911. It was a 12 -page publication and it was considered to be the best way to distribute an essay written by Rotary founder Paul Harris. The essay was entitled, ―Rational Rotarianism‖. There were also club news and advertisements. About 2,000 copies were produced by printer Harry Ruggles. Harry Ruggles, as you remember, was one of the found- ing members of the Rotary Club of Chicago. Soon the issue went back to the press for another 2,000 copies. The second issue was published in July of 1911. In 1912, by action of the RI Convention, the name of the magazine was changed to The Ro- tarian, the current moniker of today. The first editor of the magazine was Chelsey R. Perry (19111928), who was also the first Secre- tary of RI (1910- 1942). In February 1995, the magazine published its one-thousandth issue. What I find most interesting is that, to date, 17 Nobel Laureates and 19 Pulitzer Prize recipients have written for the magazine. A partial list of emi- nent contributors includes: Thomas Mann, Edith Wharton, Frank Lloyd Wright, Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Helen Keller, Eleanor Roose- velt, Norman Vincent Peale, Pearl S. Buck, Lowell Thomas, Betty Friedman, Willy Brandt, Javier de Cuellar, Arthur C. Clarke, Richard Armour, J. Ed- gar Hoover, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Rabbi Harold Kushner, Isaac Asinov, Cleveland Amory, Octavio Paz and President Jimmy Carter. Today The Rotarian magazine reaches 1,209,005 million in 200+ countries and territories around the planet. I hope you will learn to ―Text‖ and ―Twitter‖ but please don’t forget to keep reading our magazine to feel inspired and acquire new ideas to attempt in your own clubsfor the benefit of our local and global communities. My dear Rotarian Colleagues:

April was Magazine Month. We Rotari-ans, people of like mind and soul, try to communi-cate our ideas and thoughts through our organiza-tion’s official magazine, The Rotarian. It is the magazine that brings us the theme, the vision and the message of every new RI President. It gives us vital statistics of our organization’s successes throughout the world. It showcases inspiring sto-ries of ordinary men and women (like you and I) doing extra-ordinary things to help our fellow man. Finally, it is the thread that brings us all together into the kinship that we call the ―Family of Rotary‖. Yes, even in this world of instant commu-nication and social media, where ―Texting‖ and ―Twittering‖ compositions of short incomplete sen-tences is the wave of the future, it is my hope that the planet never fails to underestimate the power of reading and writing the printed word. It is the written words in the magazine that have given us an insight into the mind of our founder Paul Har-ris, who wrote in the second edition of The Na-tional Rotarian, the following:

One of the most powerful influences in the civilization of this day is the press and yet many American journals, whose tremendous circulations constitute indu-bitable proof of their influence and power, wield such influence and power with about the same tender regard to principle and truth as would a bar room full of drunken sailors. It is hoped that The National Rotarian may possess an influence and the power to spread the principles of Rotary throughout the land and that its publishers may never be-come unmindful of the fact that the ac-quisition of influence and power means

the assumption of great responsibility.

What a wonderful quote to remember in the month of April, the Magazine Month in Rotary. I thought I would wear a historian’s hat this month and tell you a little bit about The Rotarian maga-zine. The first issue, called The National Rotar-ian, was published in January of 1911. It was a 12-page publication and it was considered to be the

best way to distribute an essay written by Rotary founder Paul Harris. The essay was entitled, ―Rational Rotarianism‖. There were also club news and advertisements. I hope you will learn to ―Text‖ and ―Twitter‖ but please don’t forget to keep reading our magazine to feel inspired and acquire new ideas to attempt in your own clubs—for the benefit of our local and global communities. Remember…
