The Roughwheelers Trail Ratings for 2020 1

• Passable by stock and 2WD vehicles, improved dirt, gravel etc. 2

• Scenic, touring trail ride; four-wheel drive required occasionally, some mud holes or rocks that would stop most other vehicles are traveled easily in 4WD.

3 • For novice and experienced drivers alike; the most fun four-wheeling you can expect to have in a stock four-wheeler; low range

may be required often. 4

• Not advisable for novice drivers; potentially dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, lowest gears, lockers, limited slips, winches, and jacks advised due to moderate to large rocks and obstacles, vehicle damage possible. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.

4+ • Not advisable for novice drivers; potentially dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, lowest gears, and minimum tire

size of 33 inches and one locker or two limited slips required; jacks and winches indispensable due to large boulders, steep inclines; vehicle damage is very likely. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.

5 • No novice drivers; dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, lowest gears, minimum tire size of 35 inches and two

lockers or limited slips required; jacks and winches indispensable due to large boulders, steep inclines; vehicle damage assured. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.

5+ • For the hard core experienced driver; extremely dangerous situations; maximum ground clearance, lowest gears, minimum tire

size of 35 inches, two lockers, and winch are required. Full size vehicles limited to specific trails at this rating.

A Message from Josh Epstein dated June 12, 2020 South District Vice President California Four Wheel Drive Association Hello all, Well, Bonnie, Don and myself are home safe from another wonderful BOD meeting in Sacramento and wanted to share this with you before you heard from any one else or the email blast that will be going out in the next couple of weeks. As much as I tried to fight it.. As much as I didn’t want to admit defeat.. I unfortunately have to inform you all, with a heavy heart, we will not be rescheduling Hi-Desert Round Up 2020. There are many factors that brought this decision, but suffice it is to say that with everyone else that had runs scheduled for the past few months whom are going to be rescheduling runs into the same time frame as we would ours, along with the fact that the only potential time would be in September/October which puts a lot of family’s back in school, then add the fact that Operation Desert Fun would be weeks away; my co-chair, Russ Chung, almost the entire HDR 2020 committee and the Board of Directors have decided, that it would be best to cancel the event. The overwhelmingly clear response from everyone involved is not being able to provide an event that you all love and cherish to the level wee feel it should be. I want to urge you, with the crazy times we have had thus far, please strongly consider registering and attending the two runs coming up in the south: Operation Desert Fun and Panamint Valley Days. Like every other organization, small business and charity, Cal 4 Wheel would love to have all of your support in these times. Myself and others are going to put our blood, sweat and tears into the remaining South District events this year to make sure all that attend will have a spectacular time and those who do not, wishing that they did. We are working on plans to improve everyone’s experience to assure you leave yearning for next year’s festivities! Please let me know what I can do to help you. To my committee – THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all that you have done and more importantly, putting up with me. I know that we all wanted to make this happen but the facts are it just isn’t plausible. I’m working on a meeting location for our next SD meeting and will let you know how that goes once I confirm location and date – obviously everything is upside down and we’re doing our best to get it figured out.

Thank you again for your continued support – All of us at BOD and every other position here at Cal R Wheel, greatly appreciate it more than you’ll ever know. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, complaints or my favorite, how great of a job I’m doing.

Big Bear Trip Report By Mynor (Bird) Moreno Audrey and I headed out on Friday, in the AM, to beat the traffic and hope we could get a good spot at Holcomb Campground. Once there, we unloaded and set up our camp spot. The area was busy with people continuing to come in and looking for a campsite!

and friendship! We all had a great time with food fit for royalty prepared by Steve-O! We ate, drank, laughed and enjoyed the great friendship from all! *******************************************************************************************

Trip Report to Miller Jeep Trail By Stanley (Plugger) Lykins Father’s Day proved to be an interesting one with an impromptu trip to the infamous Miller Jeep Trail for the day. Attending were Jim and Karen Leamon, myself, Karen’s brother, Darin OKrent, his wife Michelle, and their children Sarah and Luke, Chips Mercier with several additional guests, Dennis Wensauer and my friends AJ and Heather Stamatelatos. We all might at the Flying “J” on Sunday morning before 9am where other clubs were also meeting. We all drove out to the trailhead. Upon arrival, everyone aired down in preparation for the trail. The weather was great but it looked like it was going to be a hot day.

Once we had finished setting up our area, we walked over to where the rest of the crew was. Stan, Steve, Steve-O and Gary had arrived the previous day. They had just finished having breakfast and offered us some grub. So Audrey and I sat down and enjoyed a great meal provided by Steve-O! We all did our own thing on Friday. Audrey and I headed back to our site to make dinner. We relaxed some more over our fire. We did go back to where the rest of the crew was to relax over their fire. Great evening for sure. Saturday morning we all had breakfast, on our own time and then headed to the lake where some fished and others played in the lake. We all had a great early afternoon. Once at camp, we all just relaxed before dinner. Audrey’s friend had come up to join us so we had dinner at our site and relaxed for a bit. At night fall, We headed to the other campsite to enjoy in the fire

Page 13: THE ROUGHWHEELERS 2023 Vanderbilt Lane Redondo Beach, CA … · to club members only. July Run: Big Bear (Base Camp) July 24-26, 2020. Mailing Address: The RoughWheelers . 2023 Vanderbilt

Then we began. Got to the first obstacle, which everyone made it through just fine. The foliage along the way was very pretty.

At the top of the hill, we made a quick stop because Dennis and I who were getting hot. And I don’t mean under the collar. The view was so pretty.

After a few minutes, we continued on and made out way to Cottonwood Trail (the dead end trail that leads to the giant Cottonwood Tree) for our lunch. On our way there, one of Chips friends broke a tie-rod assembly on his steering. After a quick weld job with the club’s welder, we were back in action and on our way to lunch. Along the way there were several streams to cross with one large and a little deeper than usual. The water was cool and clean. After a lengthy lunch, we worked our way back out of Cottonwood Trail and headed up to Yellow Jacket Trail, the last hill to climb before the longest trail, Miller Jeep Trail. As we were working our way back down the hill, my rig developed a vapor lock issue but then found out my fuel pump was not working. Luckily, one of Chips friends had a spare that we made work. At the same time that this was happening, a group of side by sides were working their way up the trail when one of them decided to roll his vehicle off the trail. Of course we came to their rescue.

Page 14: THE ROUGHWHEELERS 2023 Vanderbilt Lane Redondo Beach, CA … · to club members only. July Run: Big Bear (Base Camp) July 24-26, 2020. Mailing Address: The RoughWheelers . 2023 Vanderbilt

After we confirmed they were okay and got their vehicle back up on the trail, we continued to the bottom where we began Miller Jeep Trail. Half way up the hill, again we had to stop with overheating and a vapor lock issue. After everything cooled down, we continued to the end of the trail at the top of the hill. Everyone used the restroom, cleaned themselves up, had some refreshments and then aired down and made their way back to the freeway for home and to the Flying “J”. It was a long beautiful day. *******************************************************************************************
