HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY

Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897. The club's nickname of 'The Row' comes from Hartley Row, a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. In the late 1940s and into the 50s playing in the Basingstoke League, the club was successful despite having to play on a farm field with just a small wooden shed; this was Causeway Farm adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. Amongst the villagers who ran the club was its outstanding secretary, Fred Cook, who did every job that needed doing. Fred Cook's hand written minutes of meetings covering seasons 1948 to 1964 were discovered after his death and make fascinating reading, including the change of the club colours from blue squares to tange-rine in July 1956. The club moved to its present ground in Green Lane - The Me-morial Ground - in 1953. A pavilion was erected and the team continued to play in the Basingstoke League, and later in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which had replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club ap-pointed Ian Bedford as First Team Man-ager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Dur-ing the 80's these included several nota-ble ex-pros: Mick Travers (from 1980/81

to 1986/87; his other clubs included Reading, Portsmouth and Aldershot); Richard Walden (1985/86 & 1986/87; formerly with Aldershot, Sheffield Wed and Newport County); and Steve Fin-nieston (1985/86 to 1987/88; previously with Chelsea, Cardiff and Sheffield Utd). Within Ian's three years in management, the team gained trophies including the League Title (1982-1983) and Runners Up (1981-82), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (1980-81), and George Allen Cup Winners (1981-82). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup (1982-83) and Aldershot Senior Cup (1981-82).

During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, then Secretary and Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted excep-tional hours in the embryo stages of this venture. In 2007-08 under manager

Mike Scott, the club gained promotion to the Combined Counties League Premier Division, but 2008-09 ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, fin-ishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in 2009-10. Coach Louis King then took the reigns as manager, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in 2010-11. A new management team of Neville Roach, assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for 2011-12 and it was a notable season with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run to the Third Qualifying Round. But the euphoria of promotion was damp-

ened even before the champagne bub-bles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left en masse to join Thatcham Town. Ex-Millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad for 2012-13. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-Basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, belief and the introduction of a talented group of play-ers quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row's place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie joined the existing coaching setup and the 2013-14 season started well. There were wins in the FA Cup to set up a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The club finished a cred-itable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new club crest was commissioned, designed by Philippa Bell, incorporating several elements tracing the village back to the 13th century when known as Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", hence the tree and stag motifs. 2014-15 saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier, finishing a

comfortable 9th, after which Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers, with Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manag-er. It was a very eventful 2015-16. After a memorable FA Cup win away at Mer-thyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep in injury time. In the FA Vase, The Row broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual final-ists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier for most of the season and claimed the 2015-16 league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points. Promotion, howev-er, was denied due to ground grading. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the 2016-17 season under co-managers Dan Brown-lie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. Pro-pelled by the goals of strike duo Sam Argent and Ross Cook, The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Sen-ior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to take their place in the Southern League at Step 4 for the first time. To top off a wonderful 2016-17, Luke Tuffs' Youth team won the Hamp-shire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. The team took life at Step 4 in their stride and 2017-18 was to prove even more remarkable. The Row sat within

the top four for much of the season, nev-er dropping below 8th despite the loss of key players to other clubs. The man-agement team responded with some astute signings. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against higher division Gosport Borough and Farnborough be-fore going out in the First Round Proper to eventual finalists, Bromley FC. As the league campaign risked petering out, the signing of Nic Ciardini helped to keep the momentum going. Hugely im-portant was also the strong central de-fensive partnership of Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. Incredibly, a play-off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cam-bridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and The Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3. The final season highlight was in lifting the Alder-shot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC. Having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons, it's fair to say the club was collectively still pinching itself as the first game kicked off in the Evo-Stik League South Prem-ier South, 2018-19 getting off to the best possible start with a 3-1 win away at Poole Town. Dan Turkington was now co-manager with Anthony Millerick, with Sam Rafique, Keith Benjamin and Mark Hurst joining Head Coach Luke Tuffs on the coaching side. Come late September, Hartley even found themselves top for a week, but sustaining the early results proved diffi-cult. After a spell of poor results, the club found itself briefly in the relegation

zone, but more astute signings stiffened the defence and a superb late run saw Hartley finish 8th on 63 points, a hugely impressive achievement. To remain at the level also required another substan-tial round of ground grading improve-ments which stretched the club and its volunteers to the limits, but that too was achieved by the required deadline. The efforts on and off the pitch means Hart-ley Wintney can truly consider itself a Step 3 club as it prepares for its second season in the Southern League Premier Division. For season 2019/20, Manager Anthony Millerick takes sole charge of team se-lection with Dan Turkington no longer in a position to assist in the capacity of joint manager. After his huge contribu-tion over recent seasons, Head Coach Luke Tuffs departed at the end of 2018/19 to begin a managerial career. Neil Woodyer joins the coaching staff for 2019/20, the back room team com-pleted with the introduction of Sports Therapist Mark Povey. Hartley Wintney Reserves begin a new season in the Suburban League under new manager, Sean Hayes, who captained the A Team in clinching the Aldershot & District Football League Senior Division champi-onship last season. BetVictor Southern League

Premier Division South

Mon 26th

August 2019

vs

Gosport Borough Kick Off: 3.00pm

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this BetVictor Southern League, Premier South Division fixture against Gosport Borough. To all their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us this afternoon.

Our visitors today have assembled a powerful squad and amongst their ranks boast the talents of ex-Hartley players Sam Argent - who joined from Basingstoke - and Marley Ridge, who played here at the Row last season when he was on a season-long loan from Havant & Waterlooville.

Gosport kicked off their current season with a 3-0 home win against Taunton Town. In their next two games they have suffered 1 nil defeats, away at Salisbury and away against Merthyr. At the time of writing this article, the re-sult of their home fixture on 24 August is unknown. As I write this they are currently 13th in the league with 3 points from 3 games.*

A bit about our opponents:

Last Season 2018-19: Southern League Premier Division South, 19th of 22

Our own season has seen a somewhat stuttering start, and it might seem to the Hartley fans that the gods are con-spiring against us. The elements played a part in our opening fixture at Wim-borne; Swindon Supermarine was a tale of two penalties, one which was given and one which was not; culmi-nating in a rather hastily brandished red card against Harrow Borough. Two draws and a defeat could have been better, and today, hopefully, we will get the rub of the green. We are 18th in the league with 2 points from our 3 games.*

Like me I'm sure you get fed up read-ing my continual bleating about need-ing your support. I certainly get fed up writing about it!

Thanks to those who took out season tickets, I'm sure you'll appreciate the bargain you are getting. To those who bunk in to games, please don't; we need your money to keep providing football at this level.

If you don't watch the football then please sign up for your membership. It's not expensive, and if you're a beer drinker you will soon recoup your mini-mal investment.

We currently survive on the phenome-nal work of a few dedicated volunteers. We need more help in all departments, from commercial assistance, ground maintenance, kit washing, catering and stewarding. If you can help in any way, please make yourself known to any committee member. And please give Colin’s letter on page 11 a read.

WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC

VS GOSPORT BOROUGH, 26 AUG

We are always looking for active people who can help drive the club forward. To maintain our status we have certain improvements that we need to under-take, and we need help to get these works up and running.

Hope you all enjoy the game this afternoon. Please get behind the team and, as usual, thank you for your sup-port.

MILLERS

Hi all and wel-come to the Memorial Ground (the ground naming right is still up for grabs btw!) for this exciting fixture with our Hampshire ri-vals, Gosport.

Last season saw two nar-row victories for each side

whilst playing at home, but arguably the better side on each occasion lost!

Much has changed for both teams since the last time we went head to head. Gosport are much changed, from man-agement downwards, this season, with a number of recognisable figures in their ranks, not least Sam Argent and Marley Ridge, who were both excellent for us in their time here.

At the time of writing (21/8) we can consider ourselves slightly unfortunate to be sat on our current points tally, as we haven't been particularly displeased with any of our performances this sea-son. Wimborne was a slightly nervy affair, with the elements playing havoc on the day. Swindon was a smash and grab on their behalf, but I think we showed great qualities on Saturday against in-form Harrow.

It’s very easy to say, at one nil up and creating chances, we would go on to win easily. As demonstrated, things can change very quickly at this level, but I do feel (and shared by some of their personnel) had they gone 2-nil down at any stage, there was no coming back.

The sending off obviously had a mas-sive bearing in the game, but I was

particularly pleased with the way in which we rallied. We gave our all in what was a very gutsy performance and held Harrow to a limited amount of chances, showing a combination of de-sire to protect our lead/a point but also a great deal of discipline and knowhow. A puncture wound like the sending off can completely deflate when you're that much on top, so it takes a lot of resilience to resist that and be that dogged thereafter.

Today will be tough, as will/was Satur-day at Met Police. Gosport have com-pletely rejuvenated their line-up over the summer, bringing in a number of experienced, quality players. I predict this league is going to be tight for a while before opening up, but if we keep putting in the performances that we have done thus far, our fortunes will turn very shortly and we'll turn these draws into wins.

With near on the same player group, we've shown we are very capable of putting together a run and I firmly be-lieve this is just around the corner for us.

Enjoy the game today.

What has happened on the pitch over the last three seasons - back to back promotions and then finish-ing our first ever season at Step 3 in 8th place - has been phenome-nal. The team have been rightly praised for their achievements and these have created much interest in our great club. It has enabled us to attract high calibre new players, as well as hold onto the quality players that got us this far. New sponsors have become associated with the club and we have seen plenty of new, as well as returning, support-ers come through the turnstiles. However, behind the scenes I think that all those involved in running the club would openly admit we are still way off the pace. Yes, we 'get by', but only due to incredible efforts, in terms of time and money, from certain individu-als. But these efforts are taking their toll; you are probably already aware that Elayne has stepped down as Secretary, but may not know I gave notice at the AGM that this would be my last year as Treas-urer. In my opinion it is time for the club to decide upon its identity and this will affect the direction it takes in the future. Do we continue with the 'village club’ label, off the pitch punching above its weight and overly reliant on financial backing from a small few to survive year on year. Or do we embrace the fact we are a Step 3 club and make chang-es to both our commercial and ad-

ministrative operations to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on a chosen few? Personally, I feel we should em-brace the fact we are a Step 3 club, never forgetting our roots and where we have come from, in order to ensure we have a bright future. It will require some tough decisions and new strategies, but like it or not football at this level is about money, and without more of it coming into the club we will struggle to sustain football at this level. I will sign off by saying that it has been an honour to serve the club as Treasurer since being elected in 2016, and it was only after much deliberation, and soul searching, that I have come to the decision to stand down. I'd like to think I have helped make some beneficial changes, although not all that I would have liked, to the way we operate, and I will continue to look after the pennies until A.N. Other takes up the reigns. I won't name names for fear of forgetting some-body, but Thank You to everyone that has supported me in the role. #UTR

MATCH REPORT: HARROW BOROUGH

Hartley Wintney v Harrow Bor-ough, BetVictor Southern League, Premier South. Saturday 17th August Report by David Graham

Hartley Wintney and Harrow Bor-ough shared the spoils in a match where a few key refereeing deci-sions had a bearing on the out-come. The Row led from an early penalty but then were forced to play 70 minutes with just 10 players after the dismissal of Jack Ball.

Hartley started brightly and went ahead on 3 minutes. Josh Webb picked out a run by Nathan Smart and his right wing cross was han-dled by a defender. Mitchell Parker converted from the spot. (1-0)

On 8 minutes, a right wing corner from Ty Smith saw the Borough defence having difficulty clearing. Several efforts were blocked before the visitors managed to finally clear. Three minutes later, the Bor-ough registered their first effort. A long throw from Josh Andrew found Anthony O'Connor who shot wide.

The Row resumed on the attack, playing some attractive football. Continuous pressure almost saw Hartley go further ahead on 16 minutes. A Josh Webb cross found Alex Albert, who saw his header bring an excellent stop from Bor-ough keeper, Hafed Al-Droubi.

The game took a dramatic turn on 20 minutes when a Row clearance cannoned backwards into the path of Anthony O'Connor. As the striker bore down on goal he was hauled

down by Jack Ball, who was issued a red card by referee Declan O'Shea. Hartley claimed Ball was not the last defender. However, the referee deemed that a goal scoring opportunity was denied by the foul and Ball trudged off for an early shower. The subsequent free kick brought a good save from Luke Wil-liams in the Row goal.

The Borough pressed forward with the man advantage and on 24 minutes almost pulled level. A cor-ner on the right from the influential Michael Bryan found O'Connor, who watched as his effort was cleared off the line. Five minutes later, Bry-an found space on the left and his cross found the run of Frank Keita who bundled the ball past the post.

On 31 minutes referee O'Shea was again at the forefront of a difficult decision. A Ty Smith cross found Josh Webb, who quickly drove the ball into the penalty area. Mitch Parker did well to adjust and deflect the ball onto the underside of the crossbar. The ball crashed down and back into play. The referee awarded a goal and the players moved back to the centre circle. The assistant referee attracted the referee's attention and, after dis-cussion, the goal was chalked off. The assistant deemed the ball had not crossed the line. Spectators in line with the goal line agreed with the assistant referee and play was restarted with a dropped ball.

The Borough resumed on the attack and on 40 minutes a cross from George Moore found the head of O'Connor, who directed his effort

wide. A minute later, a snap shot from Keita was saved by Williams.

HT: HARTLEY 1 HARROW B. 0

Harrow were quickly on the attack in the second period and on 48 minutes Moore tested Williams with an effort from the edge of the box. The Borough forced a number of corners as the pressure mounted.

On 65 minutes, Andrew and Moss combined and the low cross saw a Row defender do well to deflect the ball wide. However, the equaliser was only to be delayed by two minutes. A slick move ended with Moore crossing to O'Connor. The striker connected well and scored with a well placed shot. (1-1)

Hartley came more into the game and registered a decent effort on 70 minutes. A long throw from Par-ker found its way to Tayo, who saw his well placed header saved.

On 76 minutes, a cross field ball found Moore coming in from the wing and his strong drive from a difficult angle produced a good save from Williams. The Borough continued having the edge and, in the last minute of added time, al-most snatched the winner. Jordan Ireland made good progress in mid-field and he found Moss. The sub-stitute tried his luck from 20 yards and the ball clipped the post before going out for a goal kick.

Hartley have played three matches and have produced a good level of play. However, they will be hoping Lady Luck will be on their side for

their next matches. [D Graham]

David spoke with manager Anthony Millerick after the game. "Harrow have been in good form in their previous two games, and obvi-ously the sending off completely changed the game. It was an in-credible effort by the team to battle and get a well deserved point. I thought all the players did well, and Shane (Hollamby) was the pick in defence."

Millers continued "In the circum-stances it's a good point, but we could certainly do with a rub of the green in forthcoming matches. It is good to get a week's break now and focus on the August Bank Holi-day games."

MATCH REPORT: SWINDON S/MARINE

Hartley Wintney v Swindon Supermarine, BetVictor South-ern League, Premier South. Tuesday 13th August 2019 Report by David Graham

Swindon Supermarine made it two wins out of two with a win over Hartley Wintney at the Memorial Ground after a very close match.

The Marine almost made the per-fect start in the first minutes. Calvin Dinsley played in Kane Simpson who shot just past the post from 12 yards. Four minutes later the Row registered their first effort when Ty Smith tried his luck from distance, his low effort saved by the well po-sitioned Marine 'keeper, Martin Horsell.

On 13 minutes, a quick breakaway by the Swindon side saw Steve Fleetwood find Henry Spalding, whose shot was deflected wide.

Hartley had a good spell at the mid point of the half and were unlucky not to take the lead on 22 minutes. A Smith left wing corner was not fully cleared. Josh Webb latched onto the ball around 20 yards out and was unlucky to see his effort crash off the crossbar.

Four minutes later the Marine had a chance with a free kick on the edge of the box. James Edge struck the ball well but it took a deflection off the wall and out to safety. Play sub-sequently became very even, with few chances created against well organised defences.

HT: HARTLEY 0 SWINDON S/M 0

The Row started the second half the brighter and on 48 minutes Tayo Oyebola did well to set up Smith, who saw his effort go wide. On 59 minutes Hartley almost got the breakthrough. A free kick from Smith found Alex Albert whose vol-ley brought out an excellent stop from Horsell.

The Row had a definite edge in ter-ritory and possession but were una-ble to fashion many chances. Webb for the Row set up Tayo, who saw his parting shot bring out a com-fortable save from Horsell.

On 71 minutes the Marine took the lead with a very preventable goal. A long ball forward saw a Row de-fender attempt to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick. Ryan Campbell was not for giving up and managed to gain possession. As he entered the penalty area he was hauled down, and referee Tom Ellsmore pointed to the penalty spot. Steve Fleetwood stepped up and scored with a strong shot. (0-1)

Hartley responded well and pulled level on 79 minutes. Tom Bird, who had an impressive match, fed Ty Smith some 25 yards from goal. The midfielder fired in a strong low shot from 25 yards which found the net. (1-1)

Six minutes later Hartley thought they were ahead. A Ty Smith cross found Albert who looked to have scored. However, Horsell managed to save the ball, albeit looking well over the line. Post match photos clearly show the ball was over the line. However, the Assistant referee

MATCH REPORT: SWINDON S/MARINE

did not get a clear view, with the Marine keeper's body in the way, and the referee waved play on.

Hartley pressed for the winner but they were caught out with a Marine second goal which again was pre-ventable. A long ball forward bounced high. A Row defender hesi-tated and Harry Williams gained pos-session. The substitute lobbed the ball over Luke Williams in the Row goal for the winner.

For Hartley they will feel they did enough to at least draw in a tight match. The team played well and produced some good football. The missing ingredient was the final pass to the strikers. In very tight matches mistakes are often the difference between winning and losing. [D Gra-ham]

David spoke to manager, Anthony Millerick , after the game.

"Firstly, Swindon Supermarine are a good side. But I felt we were a bit naive late on by pushing up too far to get the winner, only to concede a very soft winning goal. In very tight matches like this one, it came down to individual errors.

Millers continued "We were on top for most of the match. However, we have got to score during these peri-ods, otherwise it is always going to be difficult.

"I felt we rallied well after conceding the first goal. Today was a learning curve and we must get over the loss and improve throughout the sea-son."

Wimborne Town v Hartley Wintney, BetVictor Southern League Premier South, 10/8/19 Report by David Graham

Hartley Wintney travelled down to the Cuthbury and came back with a good point against Wimborne Town. However, on balance of play the Row will feel it was two points lost rather than one point gained.

The match was never going to be a classic, with a fierce wind blowing straight down the pitch. Hartley had the advantage of the wind in the first half and exerted a lot of early pres-sure. The first chance came on 12 minutes when a good move down the left saw Mitch Parker release

Tom Bird on the overlap. The full back's cross was smothered clear by the Magpies defence.

On 23 minutes the Row had a chance from a free kick on the left. Ty Smith saw his strong shot well held by home 'keeper, Cameron Plain. A minute later, the home side registered their first effort when Kieran Roberts tried a lob from dis-tance which drifted wide.

A well struck free kick on 31 minutes some 25 yards out by Kieran Roberts produced a good save from Hartley debutant 'keeper, Luke Williams. Play switched to the other end, a cross from Mitch Par-ker seeing Dean Rule squeezed out.

Although the Row were dominating proceedings, the Magpies almost took the lead on 37 minutes. A free kick into the box dropped in amongst a sea of bodies. Luke Holmes tried an overhead kick which was pawed out by Williams, and the follow ups were blocked.

The second half saw the home side with the advantage of the consider-able wind. However it was Hartley who had a good chance to open the scoring in the 46th minute. A cross from the left by Tom Bird eluded the Magpies defence a found Na-than Smart in front of goal. The Row skipper was unable to adjust his feet and the chance was lost.

On 53 minutes, with Hartley press-ing, Dean Rule found himself with a chance from a difficult angle. Plain

was quickly out and the young Hartley striker shot into the side netting while taking a knock.

Play became very physical as the half wore on. Tayo Oyebola re-placed Rule and his strong running started to cause the Magpies de-fence problems.

On 80 minutes, a free kick from Ty Smith was not properly cleared. Parker set up Shane Hollamby, who saw his effort saved by Plain. A mi-nute later, a good break down the middle by the Magpies saw Tony Lee strike on goal. The Row were relieved to see a deflection and the ball go wide.

Into added time and the three minutes saw two chances for Hart-ley. Tayo created space and his cross found Smart who shot just over. One minute later, a Josh Webb free kick was headed wide by Tayo. [D Graham]

GOSPORT BOROUGH CLUB HISTORY

Gosport Borough Athletic Club, as the club were originally known, was formed just two weeks after D-Day (6th June 1944). They are thus now celebrating their 75th year in football. Despite winning the Hampshire League at their first attempt in 1945/46, drop-ping "Athletic" in the 1960s, and over the decades being a major force in County football, silverware was rare at Privett Park and the Championship was not realised again until back-to-back titles in 1976/77 and 1977/78. The two Hampshire League titles led to a successful applica-tion to join the Southern League for 1978/79, and a peri-od of 14 seasons in the (then) upper echelons of the non- league game began. After four seasons at the top end of the Southern League's Southern Division, promotion was won to the Premier Divi-sion for 1982/83 - at the time an equiva-lent level to the later Conference South. Boro’ spent seven seasons in the Premier Division before relegation in season 1989/90. Despite surviving the following season, Gosport finished bottom in 1991/92 and were relegated back to county football (Wessex League). The club competed for a couple of sea-sons and did lift the Wessex League Cup in 1993, but with the Club strug-gling for money and with minimal crowds, Chairman Ian Hay set up a trustee scheme which kept the club alive through their darkest days, help-

ing to support the club with fans providing regular income. At the start of the century, things start-ed to turn for the better at The Boro. Reserve team manager Mick Marsh was put in charge of the 1st XI, and with the Club emerging from their financial difficulties, a return to the Southern League was back on the agenda. Marsh chased the dream for five seasons, fin-ishing in the top four on four occasions before he retired in 2005. Under manager Alex Pike, Boro’ won the Wessex League title on goal differ-

ence in Pike's first season (2006/07). With the club back in the Southern League in 2007/08, it wasn't until season 2011/12 that success came when Boro’ achieved third spot and a play-off place, winning the Play-Off Final after a Steve Claridge strike sent the game to extra time. Two goals without reply in the additional 30 minutes saw Boro’

promoted back to the Southern League Premier Division. In season 2012/13, Pike's men enjoyed FA Cup success as a precursor to an unbeaten run of 23 games which lifted Boro’ into a play-off place. Boro’ saw off second placed Stourbridge in the semi, before going into a 2-0 lead in the final against Hemel Hempstead Town, only to concede two late goals before winning promotion on penalties. So the Board's planned rise from coun-ty football to Conference South was complete and Gosport started 2013/14

GOSPORT BOROUGH CLUB HISTORY

again looking to establish themselves at a new level. Like the season before, Boro’ struggled to find their feet at the new level and, after flirting with the relegation zone for much of the season, it took another cup run to gain the belief needed to lift the team clear of danger. An FA Trophy run which started in No-vember, ended with The Boro playing beneath the Wembley Arch in a final against Cambridge United in front of over 18,000. The result saw United run out 4-0 winners, but the belief that flowed through the squad as a result of the Trophy run put Gosport back on track and lifted them into a comfortable mid-table league place. The club were able to plough the finan-cial windfall from the FA Trophy run back into the infrastructure at Privett Park. During the summer of 2014, a number of improvements were made including the installation of a new hos-pitality suite/club office building and a state-of-the-art pitch irrigation system. A solid start to the 2014/15 season saw Boro’ well placed in the league. The confidence gained from the league campaign helped the club finally make the First Round Proper of the FA Cup for the first time. Boro’ hosted Colches-ter United of League One in a tie that attracted over 2,000. Gosport acquitted themselves well in a memorable match, but ultimately lost to the Football League side 6-3. Boro’ were well placed for a play-off place until a little wobble in March saw them drop just too far off the pace, eventually finishing sixth. But the club did have the consolation of lifting the Hampshire Senior Cup for the first time since 1988, and seeing Justin Bennett

pick up the award for the Conference South's leading goal-scorer. The 2015-16 season got off to a good start, with the club pushing into play-off contention from the off. But as the New Year came, the club were hit with financial problems. The campaign did at least end on a high with a 2-1 win against AFC Portchester in the Russell Coates Cup Final, with talismanic striker Justin Bennett recording his 262nd and 263rd goals for Gosport. In 2016-17 Boro’ were relegated and former Portsmouth FC Chairman, Iain McInnes, took control of the club, with Ray Stainton (formerly Chief Executive at Pompey) joining Boro as Chief Exec-utive Officer. Lee Molyneax was appointed as first team Manager on 10th May 2019, as-sisted by Ben Kneller and Kevin Braybrook. FAN TALK: HARROW BOROUGH

Posted by Duncan 18-08-2019, 10:26 There’s plenty of positive to take out of yesterday’s game – and the matches against Swindon Supermarine and Wimborne too…. Now is the time to keep our nerve, know that our luck will change, and keep building on the posi-tives. To the untrained eye, Harrow looked nothing special as a team yesterday – which suggests that this league will once again be extremely tight across the season. When we went down to 10 men Harrow were devoid of any ideas about how to drive us onto the back foot continuing to play narrow down the middle. It was only as the second half developed that they worked out that a little more width would stretch us – and it was then that we looked more vulnerable with two or three teasing crosses evading not only the orange clad defensive warriors but their own players too… Yesterday we started strongly – and what a difference having a player such as Mickel Platt up front alongside Mitch made. Mickel’s hold-up play and ability to turn defenders inside out created so much more in the final third and al-lowed our midfield and attack to be much better linked. Any combination of Mickel, Mitch and Tayo will create chances – and with strong support out-side them from the likes of Nathan and the holidaying Duffy then we must be able to push on and get not only more goals but get those elusive wins under our belts. And talking about goals, it must be time for Alex to get just reward for his efforts over the last three matches: absolutely battered by the crude tactics of Wimbourne; denied by the myopic officials against Supermarine as well as

an outstanding save by their keeper; and unfortunate that the ball came down off the cross bar onto the line yesterday. Fine margins. Trust me, there’s nothing but passion-ate support from those of us on the sidelines – we believe. UTR Posted by VINTY 18-08-2019, 11:03 This was a courageous, battling display by the lads, who were down to ten men for well over an hour against one of the top unbeaten teams in the league after Jack Ball was sent off, and it just showed their commitment and desire in adversity --- I am sure, with a full complement, we would have gone on and produced a result. We started brightly with an early penalty, striking the woodwork, and an Alex header that somehow hit the keeper. Then of course the sending off changed the pattern of the game and we had from then on to defend stoutly, with Shane and Alex in outstanding form at the back, which broke up attack after at-tack until we were ultimately breached, just the once, in a very, very long sec-ond half!! As Duncan has said, many positives to take from the game. Not least it showed there is not a lot of difference in the quality of many of the teams in the league, and although the gremlins are out at the moment, the luck will soon come our way and we will start putting the results together. We, the supporters, are still 110 per cent be-hind the team and Millers knows we will never let them down, and we’ll continue to be as vociferous as possible in encouraging them.

SEASON 2018-19 : SEASON SUMMARY

Last season was a history-making one for the club as the First Team competed for the first time at Step 3 of the football pyramid. In a season of ups and a few downs, the side rallied brilliantly to finish strongly and secure 8th place with 63 points, placing us as the top step 3 club in Hampshire, above Basingstoke Town, Farnborough and Gosport Bor-ough, clubs we have long had to admire (or perhaps envy) from a rela-tively lowly posi-tion. As the season came to a close, we said a fond farewell to First Team Head Coach, Luke Tuffs, as he embarks on a career in management at Knaphill. Luke has helped the club achieve so much over recent seasons and his ef-forts and boundless energy will never be forgotten. It was also a season to remember for the A Team, under manager Andy Sto-rey, as they finished as Aldershot &

District Football League Senior Division champions, winning 15 of their 16 league games and ending the cam-paign 15 points ahead of their nearest rivals. It wasn’t the easiest season for our Reserve Team under managers Ricky Hogsden and Neil Lancaster, but they finished in a creditable mid-table posi-tion. Our two veterans teams in the

Farnham & District Sunday Football League did well too, the Row 1st XI in Division One finishing top, while in Division Two Row United se-cured the third spot and were winners of the Challenge Cup, defeating Ashridge Park Vet-erans 6-2 in the final.

Our very young Youth Team playing in the U18 Allied Counties Youth League worked hard and showed excellent promise. They ended the season in the bottom spot but that wasn't due to any lack of effort on the part of the boys. It was a rebuilding phase for our youth team last term and that’s set to contin-ue now under the reigns of new man-ager Tommy Ashby. [KOB]

15 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2004-05) 24/8/2004 Reading Town 2 Hartley Wintney 0 Combined Counties League Premier Division This time 15 years ago we went down two-nil at Reading in front of 50 spectators. This had followed a 2-1 win at home to Raynes Park Vale in our opening league game (attendance 44), the goals coming from Smith and Hutchins. We drew 0-0 in the next game away at Chipstead, but this was the season we finished second from bottom and relegated.

10 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2009-10) 29/8/2009 Hartley Wintney 5 Sheerwater 1 Combined Counties League Division 1 Playing in division one of the CCL, in front of a home crowd of 67, we demolished Sheerwater with goals from Christian (2), Spence (2) and Small. This came on the back of 6-1 and 5-3 wins against Chobham (home) and Knaphill (away) re-spectively, so quite a goal scoring spree at the start of the season we were to disappointingly finally finish 5th... behind Knaphill. It was the sea-son Mole Valley SCR were promoted as champi-ons, with Worcester Park narrow runners-up.

Pictured: Jimmy Moran, who played for Hartley in 2009-10, pictured here collecting a MOTM award the previous 08-09 season.

5 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2014-15) Combined Counties League Premier Division 25/8/2014 Hartley Wintney 1 Knaphill 0 We were once again facing our old friends and rivals Knaphill in the Au-gust Bank Holiday fixture, this time back in the Combined Counties Prem-ier Division. It was an early 11.30 kick-off, as tended to be common for the holiday games in those days, and attracted a crowd of 60 to the Me-morial Ground. We finished the season 9th; Molesey were crowned champions.

BACK IN THE DAY

42

L ast week saw our second summer football school – with an amazing 90 kids turning

up for three days of football skills and fun. It was great to have some of the Senior team working with the various groups – as well as welcoming back an old face in the new Knaphill manager, Luke Tuffs. It’s an abso-lute ambition of the Junior Football Club to continue to get closer ties with the Seniors – and that one day we will see one or more of the kids in the village stepping out for the First Team on the hallowed Hartley turf. Plaudits go to Stephen Duff, Mickel Platt, Louie Paget and Millers for all of their help last week – as well as to Sam, Ollie, Alex, Harry, Ahmed and Nick E for helping to make the event such a huge success. [DS] Hartley Wintney Junior FC is an FA Chartered Standard club, a marque first achieved in 2011/12 – all that we do as a club is built around the key tenets of maintaining FA Chartered Standard status. Our latest initiative is the formation of
