HARTLEY WINTNEY FC CLUB HISTORY

Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in 1897. The club's nickname of 'The Row' comes from Hartley Row, a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. In the late 1940s and into the 50s playing in the Basingstoke League, the club was successful despite having to play on a farm field with just a small wooden shed; this was Causeway Farm adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs. Amongst the villagers who ran the club was its outstanding secretary, Fred Cook, who did every job that needed doing. Fred Cook's hand written minutes of meetings covering seasons 1948 to 1964 were discovered after his death and make fascinating reading, including the change of the club colours from blue squares to tange-rine in July 1956. The club moved to its present ground in Green Lane - The Me-morial Ground - in 1953. A pavilion was erected and the team continued to play in the Basingstoke League, and later in the Aldershot League. In 1973, Glynn Howell was appointed Manager. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League, which had replaced the Surrey Senior League. After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club ap-pointed Ian Bedford as First Team Man-ager. Once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Dur-ing the 80's these included several nota-ble ex-pros: Mick Travers (from 1980/81

to 1986/87; his other clubs included Reading, Portsmouth and Aldershot); Richard Walden (1985/86 & 1986/87; formerly with Aldershot, Sheffield Wed and Newport County); and Steve Fin-nieston (1985/86 to 1987/88; previously with Chelsea, Cardiff and Sheffield Utd). Within Ian's three years in management, the team gained trophies including the League Title (1982-1983) and Runners Up (1981-82), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (1980-81), and George Allen Cup Winners (1981-82). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup (1982-83) and Aldershot Senior Cup (1981-82).

During this period a new Clubhouse was opened. David Willoughby, then Secretary and Treasurer, and Bill Mitchell, the then club Chairman and now President, devoted excep-tional hours in the embryo stages of this venture. In 2007-08 under manager

Mike Scott, the club gained promotion to the Combined Counties League Premier Division, but 2008-09 ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under manager and assistant Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied, fin-ishing 5th in CCL Div 1 in 2009-10. Coach Louis King then took the reigns as manager, guiding the team to 7th in CCL Div 1 in 2010-11. A new management team of Neville Roach, assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr took charge for 2011-12 and it was a notable season with the club achieving promotion back to the Combined Counties League Premier Division. Hartley also had a fine FA Cup run to the Third Qualifying Round. But the euphoria of promotion was damp-

ened even before the champagne bub-bles had burst, when the coaching staff and almost the entire squad left en masse to join Thatcham Town. Ex-Millwall defender, Dave Tuttle, was given the summer to prepare a new squad for 2012-13. However, a string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-Basingstoke Town and Hartley striker, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players and Ben, with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by this time with Hartley well and truly set adrift at the bottom of the table. Their enthusiasm, belief and the introduction of a talented group of play-ers quickly restored the spirit around the club. In what became known as the season of the club's 'Great Escape', the Row's place in the CCL Premier was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season. Steve Saunders and Dan Brownlie joined the existing coaching setup and the 2013-14 season started well. There were wins in the FA Cup to set up a home tie in the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in the club's history, losing out to Daventry Town in front of a crowd of over 1,000. The club finished a cred-itable 7th in the CCL Premier Division. A new club crest was commissioned, designed by Philippa Bell, incorporating several elements tracing the village back to the 13th century when known as Hertleye Wynteneye, meaning "the clearing in the forest where the deer graze by Winta's island", hence the tree and stag motifs. 2014-15 saw the club consolidate its place in the CCL Premier, finishing a

comfortable 9th, after which Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed as Joint First Team Managers, with Luke Tuffs coming in as First Team Coach while continuing as Youth Team Manag-er. It was a very eventful 2015-16. After a memorable FA Cup win away at Mer-thyr Town in the Second Qualifying Round, Hartley battled back from 2-0 down to 2-2 away at Conference South Eastbourne Borough, only to be beaten by a goal struck deep in injury time. In the FA Vase, The Row broke a longstanding club record by reaching the 5th Round Proper. In front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane, eventual final-ists Hereford proved too strong, but the Row went on to top the CCL Premier for most of the season and claimed the 2015-16 league title, finishing 10 points clear on 106 points. Promotion, howev-er, was denied due to ground grading. Faced with attempting to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the substantial ground improvements that would allow progression, the 2016-17 season under co-managers Dan Brown-lie and Anthony Millerick, and coach Luke Tuffs, was extraordinary. Pro-pelled by the goals of strike duo Sam Argent and Ross Cook, The Row topped the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reached the semi-finals of the Hampshire County Cup and the final of the Aldershot Sen-ior Cup, and secured the required ground grading to take their place in the Southern League at Step 4 for the first time. To top off a wonderful 2016-17, Luke Tuffs' Youth team won the Hamp-shire FA Youth Cup against a strong Aldershot Town U18. The team took life at Step 4 in their stride and 2017-18 was to prove even more remarkable. The Row sat within

the top four for much of the season, nev-er dropping below 8th despite the loss of key players to other clubs. The man-agement team responded with some astute signings. The Row embarked on their first FA Trophy campaign, which included wins against higher division Gosport Borough and Farnborough be-fore going out in the First Round Proper to eventual finalists, Bromley FC. As the league campaign risked petering out, the signing of Nic Ciardini helped to keep the momentum going. Hugely im-portant was also the strong central de-fensive partnership of Jack Ball and Liam Eagle. Incredibly, a play-off place was secured and the Row won the semi-final against AFC Dunstable 2-0. Cam-bridge City had triumphed at Hayes & Yeading FC in the other semi. In front of a crowd of over 700 at Green Lane, a tense game was decided by a single goal scored by Ciardini and The Row clinched promotion and made it to the Southern Premier at Step 3. The final season highlight was in lifting the Alder-shot Senior Cup with a 4-1 win against Eversley & California FC. Having negotiated the steep climb from Step 5 to Step 3 in just two seasons, it's fair to say the club was collectively still pinching itself as the first game kicked off in the Evo-Stik League South Prem-ier South, 2018-19 getting off to the best possible start with a 3-1 win away at Poole Town. Dan Turkington was now co-manager with Anthony Millerick, with Sam Rafique, Keith Benjamin and Mark Hurst joining Head Coach Luke Tuffs on the coaching side. Come late September, Hartley even found themselves top for a week, but sustaining the early results proved diffi-cult. After a spell of poor results, the club found itself briefly in the relegation

zone, but more astute signings stiffened the defence and a superb late run saw Hartley finish 8th on 63 points, a hugely impressive achievement. To remain at the level also required another substan-tial round of ground grading improve-ments which stretched the club and its volunteers to the limits, but that too was achieved by the required deadline. The efforts on and off the pitch means Hart-ley Wintney can truly consider itself a Step 3 club as it prepares for its second season in the Southern League Premier Division. For season 2019/20, Manager Anthony Millerick takes sole charge of team se-lection with Dan Turkington no longer in a position to assist in the capacity of joint manager. After his huge contribu-tion over recent seasons, Head Coach Luke Tuffs departed at the end of 2018/19 to begin a managerial career. Neil Woodyer joins the coaching staff for 2019/20, the back room team com-pleted with the introduction of Sports Therapist Mark Povey. Hartley Wintney Reserves begin a new season in the Suburban League under new manager, Sean Hayes, who captained the A Team in clinching the Aldershot & District Football League Senior Division champi-onship last season. BetVictor Southern League

Premier Division South

Tues 13th

August 2019

vs

Swindon Supermarine Kick Off: 7.30pm

Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground for this BetVictor Southern Premier South Division fixture against Swindon Supermarine. To their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm wel-come and hope you enjoy your short stay with us this evening. We also ex-tend a warm welcome to today's match officials and hope that they too enjoy the Hartley hospitality.

Our visitors this evening are nicknamed the Marine and finished last season in 11th place in the league and will be looking to improve on that position this season. In the two meetings last sea-son honours were even, with the Ma-rine drawing 2 each here at the Memo-rial Ground; Hartley's goals that day were scored by Ridge and Parker. The return fixture at the Webbswood Stadi-um also saw the spoils shared with a 1 all draw. Hartley's goal that day was scored by Jack Ball.

It is hard to believe that the season has come around so soon. This season could well be a crucial one in the histo-ry of our Club. I believe that the time has come for us to shake off the ‘village club’ mantle and recognise that we are a Southern League side! In fair-ness to the manager and the players, they are stepping up to the plate. It is now up to those of us who strive to work for the Club off the pitch to as-

cend to the next level. This ascenden-cy, however, is proving to be our stum-bling block. We desperately need com-mercial assistance in raising funds that will enable us to compete at this level player wise, and also to develop the ground to enhance the match day ex-perience. Whilst we have achieved the necessary ground grading, we are aware that the facilities could still do with upgrading. It has cost us a sub-stantial amount of money to stay at this level. Wouldn't it be nice if we could get the Council involved in devel-oping a facility for all?

Those of you who have travelled to our away fixtures at Horsham and Slough will have seen first-hand what can be done. Is there anyone who would like to take on our off field development?

We have a new 25 year lease on the ground and we hope to use this to im-prove facilities for future generations. This, of course, is contingent on being able to raise funds. You can all make a difference. Bring a mate to the game, sponsor a player, or why not try the 50/50 raffle? Every little helps. If you want to get involved please contact me on the Club Phone number. Leave a message and I will get back to you.

By the time you read this we will have already played away at Wimborne. Hopefully we will have secured 3 points and that all the hard work of pre-season has begun to pay off.

I hope you all enjoy the game this evening and that you will come and visit us again.

The hard work starts here!

MILLERS

[Penned before our game on Sat at Wimborne]

Good evening everybody and welcome back to the Memorial ground for our first home game in what we hope will be a suc-cessful campaign in all competi-tions this season.

The off-season gave us a great oppor-tunity to reflect, learn and re-evaluate all things Hartley, and from a personal standpoint it was fairly enjoyable, as I was constantly fire-fighting to keep all our assets at the club. Players were very quick to verbally commit their fu-tures to the club, which speaks vol-umes about how they view things. Knowing what you've got coming back makes it easier to identify key areas that potentially need strengthening and we, as a management team, are confi-dent we have done that.

Pre-season has been fairly game heavy as we have carried a large number throughout, learning our mistakes from last season whereby we were constant-ly short on numbers. Having a lot of trialling/invited players trying to win a place is healthy for all as it breeds competition, so it has been important to look at different player combina-tions, players in different roles etc., and that has to be done in a competi-tive game. We have been good in some games, not so good in other games, but each time we as a management team have had another question an-swered by the performance.

Our ‘marquee signing’ has been the return of the personnel who made up

the form team (Weymouth aside) over the last 15 games of the season, many of whom had better monetary offers elsewhere. As demonstrated over the last few weeks, we have also had a number of new lads make an impres-sion who will no doubt feature (if they haven't already) in the coming games, all of whom have brought something different to the table.

Our squad is good - we have all the key virtues in order to be better than last year, so we now must put practice to the test and compete in what is a very strong league.

Our goal last year was to be competi-tive in every game and, a few games aside, we achieved that. Our goal this season is a simple one: to be better than we were last season.

If we achieve that, we will not only be competitive in every game but we should also have a healthy league posi-tion regardless of what other teams are doing.

I know a lot of people like direct tar-gets but that is something we have rarely done (the only time being our second league win a few years ago when we had to go and win it again). We can only control what we do, and if there are a multitude of teams spend-ing large amounts of money then so be it, it’s not our business and our only business is to find a way to beat them! If the league is stronger this season, then we will have to be stronger!

Today will be a very tough game. We had two real battles with Swindon last season, and we did well to hold on at their place in April as we had a number out or playing out of position.

I was impressed with them on the day, not only are they good footballers but they are also strong, quick and have a good work ethic.

I suspect they will have a good season and we will have to be at it today to rec-ord a victory, but that will be a common theme throughout this season....no team is going to roll over this season, and this is going to be another challenge!

Let’s thrive on that challenge though, and also enjoy it, it will be another great ride this season!

UP THE ROW!

PLAYER NEWS: ANGEL ZAPATA MONTES

Columbian flair comes to Hartley as Zapata Montes Re-Signs

The Club is delighted to announce that Angel Zapata Montes has re-signed for us after joining us late on in the last campaign.

The wait for international clearance restricted Angel’s appearances last term, but the young Columbian showed flashes of skill that left us all ea-

ger for him to have time to grow into the squad and get used to the pace of play at Southern Premier level. One of those players you feel could

repay your entrance fee twice over with one mesmerising move.

Millers said "Angel came in at the very end of the last season after getting his international clearance and at times

displayed some true South American flair.

Offering something dif-ferent, I fully expect the tricky winger to play a lot more this

season."

Influential Striker Mitch Parker Re-Signs for the Row

The Club is delighted to confirm that striker Mitchell Parker has re-signed for the coming season. On joining us mid-season last term, it soon be-came apparent that Mitch would be a very important addition to our first team. He made an instant impression, puzzling quite a few of us as to why his previous club had let him go. Their loss was most definitely Hart-ley's gain. Mitch slotted into the squad straight away and the Row faithful quickly grew to admire his skill on the ball and workrate off it.

Millers said "After signing from neighbours Basingstoke, Mitchell be-came an overnight sensation with fans for his hard work rate, endeav-our and most of all his ability. De-spite a number of suitors, we are very pleased he has committed his future to the Club."

PLAYER NEWS: JACK FRENCH

Frenchy Signs as the 2019/20 Row Squad takes shape Some call him tireless, tenacious. Some call him the human dynamo, but

we just call him Frenchy. The Club is delighted to announce that Jack French has re-signed for the Row for the coming sea-son. The popular midfielder, an inte-gral member of the squad over recent seasons who has contrib-uted much to our success, will no doubt again provide his usual brand of high octane energy on the pitch.

Louie Paget, he's one of our own! It's always hugely satisfying for a club's staff and supporters to see a player develop through from youth ranks and cement their place in the first team. Louie Paget signed first team forms back in August 2015, showed patience (never easy as an eager young player) and has now de-veloped into a player with allround abilities both de-fensively and in the at-tacking third, in the air and with the ball at his feet. Another firm fans favourite, we're delighted Louie has again signed. Millers said "Louie is one of our own, having come up through the ranks. Lou had his best season at the club, making left back his own towards the back end of last season. Fierce in the tackle and with bags of energy, expect to see Lou racing up and down the line this season."

14

PLAYER NEWS: MATT DRAGE

Defender Matt Drage another strong signing for Millers Matt Drage, who joined the Club last season at a crucial time and played a big part in steadying the defence, instantly helping to turn some previ-ously heavy 'goals against' scorelines into clean sheets, is another of last

season's ultimately successful squad to re-sign for the Row for 2019-20. Of the big central defender, manager Anthony Millerick said underlining his contribution, "Matt made an immediate im-pact after signing from Whitehawk last season and played a big part in our return to form. We are thrilled that the cultured centre half has re-signed for the club."

Midfielder Josh Webb Re-Signs for 2019/20 Last season's "Managers' Player of the Year", Joshua Webb, has signed up to the Row for the new campaign, which will be his third season at the club. His energy, enthusiasm in whatever position he's asked to play, and his ability to turn defence into attack, have made him hugely popular with the Row faithful. Millers said "Webby is one of the most talented players at the club. A real ball player with a wand of a left foot... probably the second best at the club. Chips in with a fair few assists and has scored the odd pearler - the free-kick at Basingstoke comes to mind. He is well liked in the changing room, along with his chums, Paget and French. Well deserved fans favourite who all appreciate his ability and also his willingness to help out in a variety of positions when called upon."

BACK IN THE DAY...

15 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2004-05) 14/8/2004 Hartley Wintney 2 Binfield 1 Pre-season friendly Goals from Hollamby and McMahon secured a pre-season win this week 15 years ago. We played in the Combined Counties League Premier Division that season. We are still testing ourselves against Binfield (losing out 1-3 this time in early July) and still have a certain Mr Hollamby in the squad! 10 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2009-10) Combined Counties League Division 1 12/08/2009 Feltham 2 Hartley Wintney 2 In our second league game of the season, we followed up a 3-0 home win against Warlingham (goals from Brunt x2 and Spence) with a draw at Feltham. 25 turned out to watch the game, our goals coming from Spence (p) and Weeks. 5 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK (2014-15) Combined Counties League Premier Division 09/08/2014 Hartley Wintney 2 Epsom & Ewell 1 A crowd of 65 watched our home league match against Epsom & Ewell, which came on the back of a 1-0 opening day win at home to Colliers Wood Utd and a 2-1 defeat at Cove. Really wasn’t all that long ago!

TWO VERY BIG THANK YOU’S!

Volunteers are the lifeblood of any football club and Hartley would not be in existence but for a few volunteers starting something amazing some 121 years ago. Match Day just would not happen without those of us willing to give up our time and energy for the Club. Don't get me wrong, it's bloody stressful sometimes (most times) but we do it for the love of the Club. The further the Club has progressed, the harder it gets to try and not fall foul of the League and FA directives, which is why we are always looking for more volunteers to try and spread the load.

Here it comes, a HUGE, HUGE heartfelt and sincere ‘thank you’ to all those that help out on Match Day. Maybe it's col-lecting the odd ball, baking the odd cake for hospitality, helping with car parking, pulling the programme togeth-er or manning the turnstile. Maybe you are there helping for a couple of hours, or are at the ground from silly o'clock

until your feet hurt 10 hours later - whatever you may contribute to make Match Day an enjoyable day for every-one who visits the Memorial Ground, we just cannot thank you enough.

There are a few more that help outside of Match Day of course, when there are works to be done; we haven't forgotten you! Special mention to Valbro, Snake, Bertie, Freddie Morris and Noaksie for the monumental effort in getting us through the last round of ground grad-ing - outstanding guys, thank you. Our facilities tick all the boxes required and yet still remain the homely heart of Hartley, as opposed to a soulless con-crete enclosure. Thanks again everyone, amazing to look back on the last few seasons, what a journey!

Elayne

D uring the Annual General Meeting in July, Elayne signalled her inten-tion to step down from the role of Club Secretary, the position now pass-ing to Phil Blakey, who will already be known to many of you as Phil has been a Match Day Official and represented the club at away games. We welcome Phil to the role and thank him for taking it on, since it’s no little commitment to take on the job. Fortunately Phil has the background and experience to handle it. So it is now our turn to thank Elayne from the bottom of our hearts for the way she has handled the job of Secretary at what was very probably the most demanding time to be in the job, given our rise up the pyramid and all the associated workload, challenges and frustrations. Of course, she is not disappearing and has still been busy helping with the handover of the various tasks to Phil. At the same time, I know it has at last ena-bled her to have just a little bit of ‘me time’, and heaven knows that’s long overdue and well deserved. Thank you Elayne, from us all. [KOB]

The sponsorship will help spread the story about who we are and what we offer." The Reserve side will embark on the new season in the Suburban league under a new manager, Sean Hayes. Sean captained Hartley ‘A’ last season, helping the team to suc-cess as Aldershot & District Sen-ior League Champions. He is now looking forward to management and will be assisted by coach, Sam Cave. Already well known around the Club, Sean was delighted to hear confirmation of his appointment following discussions with First Team manager Anthony Millerick. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge, buzzing to get start-ed.” The Club warmly thanks Ricky Hogsden and Neil Lancaster for their work with the Reserves. SWINDON SUPERMARINE CLUB HISTORY

The football club was founded in 1992 from the amalgamation of two estab-lished Hellenic League clubs - Swindon Athletic and Supermarine. After the merger Swindon Supermarine regularly finished in the top eight in the Hellenic Premier Division. In 1994/95 under managers Alan Dyton and Leo Colucci we entered the Wilt-shire Premier Shield for the first time and went all the way to the final only to lose out to Trow-bridge Town. That all changed in the 1996/97 season when we won our first trophies since the club's merger when we defeated Devizes Town in the final of the Wiltshire Premier Shield and a successful season came to a close when we won the Hellenic Premier Division Chal-lenge Cup with a win over Kintbury Rangers. Under the guidance of John Fisher and former Swindon Town stalwart Don Rogers in the 1997/98 season the team won their last two fixtures to secure our first Hellenic Premier Division Championship. The 2000/01 season the team won the Hellenic League Premier Division cham-pionship title and the retention of the Floodlight Cup. With the championship secured the application to join the Southern League was accepted. To secure promotion several ground im-provements were successfully under-taken to meet the league's guidelines. After a disastrous start to 2001/02, the club secured the services of the vastly experienced John Murphy. With John at the helm the team staged a tremen-dous come back in the league to en-sure Southern League survival.

The following 2002/03 season was un-fortunately far worse than our first sea-son in the Southern League and at the end of September 2002 John Murphy decided to relinquish his managerial position with the club rooted at the bottom of the league. Former Cirencester manager Ray Baverstock began the daunting task of keeping the club in the Southern League, which he duly obliged with a

record seven wins from the last eight league. The 2003/04 season started so differently from our first two sea-sons in the Southern League. With Ray and his team at the helm the team started very well, so it was a complete shock when Ray decided to step down due to per-sonal commitments. Tommy Saunders' reign as manager only lasted a

couple of months as he resigned. His Assistant, Mark Collier took over the job and duly led the side to their first victory in seven games. Following that win Mark was offered the position as manager and he took us to safety with a 17th place in the Western Division. For a fifth consecutive season we start-ed the 2005/06 league campaign in the Southern League, with Mark Collier in his first full season as manager and Ian Howell as his assistant, achieving a fifth place finish and a place in the play-offs. Unfortunately, the side lost in the playoffs to a strong Hemel Hempstead Town who went on to secure promo-tion to the Premier Division. The 2006/07 season was a successful one as the team scraped into a play-off place and duly went through to win 2-0

SWINDON SUPERMARINE CLUB HISTORY

in the play-off final against Taunton Town to take us into the Southern League Premier Division. The team were also successful in winning the Wiltshire Premier Shield with a 2-1 vic-tory over Swindon Town in the final. In 2007/08 season, the side finished a creditable 12th. The 2008/09 season saw the team in the top six in January and they had an excellent FA Trophy run, only losing in the last sixteen at Conference side Ebbsfleet. The cup run meant the side dropped out of conten-tion for a play-off place and finished mid-table. The 2009/10 season saw the team struggle and it was only in March 2010 that they moved out of the rele-gation places with a run of good results and finished fifteenth. During the summer of 2010 the Execu-tive Committee released a statement indicating that the team was likely to be disbanded due to a lack of funding. The old Executive Committee and a few enthusiastic supporters met each week over a six-week period and in June a new committee was formed to take the club into the new season. A commit-ment to financing a playing budget was made and Mark Collier accepted the position of continuing as club manager. 2010/11 saw the club secure a very creditable 10th place, and besides the solid league performance the team had an exceptional FA Cup run when they reached the Second Round and only lost 1-0 away to NPower League 1 side Colchester United. A memorable day for all connected to SSFC. A short while after this FA Cup run the club accepted the resignation of Manager Mark Collier and Assistant Tom Jones due to per-sonal reasons. Players Gary Horgan and Matt Robinson took over in a caretaker role and rallied the players to finish the season on a high. But the 2011/12 sea-son ended in disappointment for the

whole club when the team were rele-gated from the Southern Premier to the Division One South & West after finish-ing 22nd, losing our position in the Premier Division on goal difference. Dave Webb accepted the offer of taking over as manager for 2012/13 and, along with his assistant at Highworth, Lee Spalding, they were duly appointed in May 2012. In Dave Webb's first two seasons he managed to lead the club to two play-off finishes and two semi-finals. 2015/16 saw the team finish in a play-off position, but just as in 2012 and 2013 they lost at the semi-final stage, this time 2-1 at Taunton Town, unlucky in a game they dominated. The 2016/17 season saw the team fin-ish sixth, just one position outside the playoffs, and successful in winning the Wiltshire Senior Cup, beating neigh-bours Highworth Town 2-1 in the final. In mid-January of 2017/18, Dave Webb departed the club and his assistant, Lee Spalding, took on the role of Caretaker Manager. Come the end of the season, Lee and his team had earned a play-off place. In the Semi-Final at Evesham Utd, after drawing 1-1 after extra time, Marine went through 5-4 on penalties to a final at Wimborne Town. In anoth-er tight game which ended 0-0 after extra time, Marine won 4-3 on penal-ties and gained promotion back to the Evo-Stik Premier South. The first season back in the Southern League Premier Division in 2018/19 was a good season, but unfortunately dropping too many points against the teams lower down the table. But for that we could have finished somewhere near the play-off positions rather than the 11th place finish we achieved. All in all though, it was a good achievement to finish midtable in our first season back at this level.

HARTLEY WINTNEY JUNIOR FC

A longside the senior club, Hartley Wintney Junior FC has a hard-earned rep-utation as a well-respected and organised football club. We welcome players of all abilities – across our age groups we have a range of teams that cater for the needs of the individual player, engendering a spirit of learning through having fun. We support over 250 children across more than 20 teams, ranging from under 7s to under 17/18s – and we start with children from the age of 5 joining us in weekly training sessions. The Junior Football Club has close connections with Hartley Wintney FC, not only through sharing ground facilities but also from the support and guidance of the Senior Club coaching staff who train a number of our teams; this provides op-portunity for players to progress onto the Youth, Reserves and even 1st team squads. Key for us is to provide football for boys and girls of the local community in a safe and friendly environment. And this coming season we are putting a real focus on the girls. Our first girls team will be getting off the ground in Septem-ber – the Hartley Wintney U10 Tigers will be taking to the pitch for the first time as we harness the momentum started by the Lionesses in the recent World Cup. Finding a league to play in is not easy here in North East Hampshire – but we are determined to crack all that stands in our way and give all of our kids here in Hartley Wintney the chance to play the beautiful game. The Junior club is somewhat of a recent addition (certainly when compared to the long history of the senior club) and were founded in 1996. Known as the Hawks, the club started with just 2 teams who played friendly matches on pitch-es that were marked out by cones. From our early roots we have grown some-what and are now affiliated to the Hampshire FA. We play fixtures in the North East Hants League, as well as entering teams into the annual Hampshire Cup competitions. Training is taken by professional coaches and held at Robert Mays

Floodlit Astro Pitch and the RAF facilities in Odiham. We also run organised Foot-ball Schools during holiday times to build on a mixture of training, football skills and active healthy fun – with our next one being held on the 21-23 August…. The club is run by dedicated volunteers, who are all Level 1, Emergency Aid and Safeguarding qualified, and who have completed an enhanced Criminal Records Check. We abide by the FA Codes of Conduct, FA Policies and implement the Respect Programme. We strive to achieve respect both on and off the pitch from our opponents; we achieved the NEHYL Fair Play award - awarded for good dis-cipline and sportsmanship – in two consecutive years, and seek to repeat this. Hartley Wintney Junior FC is an FA Chartered Standard club, a marque first achieved in 2011/12 – all that we do as a club is built around the key tenets of maintaining FA Chartered Standard status. Our latest initiative is the formation of a Junior Football Committee to give our players the voice they deserve to help shape and run their Football Club. Do get in contact with us if you are able to support in any way – and especially if you have someone with young legs and wanting to just get out onto the grass and play football! Our new motto is dear to everything we do here at the Foot-ball Club: “We Only Do Positive”

THE NLP COLUMN

This week’s NLP programme column was written by Matt Badcock Love it or Lose it - we should all cherish this matchday tradition You have to wonder how we will be reading football programmes in the next five years. Will we even be read-ing them at all? Change and progression is vital for the future health of the game, but there are many aspects that will leave tradi-tionalists misty-eyed recalling how things used to be. Programmes have long seemed under threat, and with more leagues – including the English Football League – giving clubs the op-tion to produce one or not, there is a gradual decline. As a way of clubs putting out their own news, interviews with players, and managers’ notes, they’ve always been an ideal way of interacting with the fanbase. Not to mention the sponsors being able to put their product in front of people on a weekly basis. But by many accounts, sales are falling and, combined with the increases in costs, you can understand why clubs are exploring other options or dropping them altogether. When Football League clubs have voted on a decision to stop them being mandatory, it can be ex-pected to filter down. Perhaps programmes will become in-creasingly digital. Clubs across the country and across the world, are al-ready experimenting with online edi-tions, even the use of QR codes on tickets to bring the latest copy direct to your phone. It will be fascinating to see how they evolve. But there’s always been some-thing special about the hard copy

that you can touch, roll up into a pock-et and browse at half-time or on the train home from a game. Lovingly put together by programme editors giving up their spare hours to produce a prod-uct they are proud of. It’s easy to underestimate how much time goes in each week to pro-grammes: the hours of writing, liaising with the opposition and carefully proof-reading for errors. (I second that! But you missed off ‘chasing the manager for words!- Ed) Perhaps I’m one of the dying breed who still enjoys seeing what clubs can produce. We must not forget how de-manding it is for volunteers in Non-League to put all this together, let alone the frustration when the weather hits and scuppers all that hard work. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts. The fact you are reading this weekly programme column, sent out by The NLP, hopefully shows programmes will be around for a while yet.

----------- The NLP is the paper of the non-league game and as a club we urge everybody to support the publication’s efforts by purchasing the paper, or why not take out a subscription and have it delivered to your door each week.

SEASON 2018-19 : SEASON SUMMARY

Last season was a history-making one for the club as the First Team compet-ed for the first time at step 3 of the football pyramid. In a season of ups and a few downs, the side rallied bril-liantly to finish strongly and secure 8th place with 63 points, placing us as the top step 3 club in Hampshire, above Basingstoke Town, Farnborough and Gosport Borough, clubs we have long had to admire (or perhaps envy) from a relatively lowly position. As the season came to a close, we said a fond farewell to First Team Head Coach, Luke Tuffs, as he embarks on a career in manage-ment at Knaphill. Luke has helped the club achieve so much over recent seasons and his efforts and bound-less energy will never be forgotten. It was also a season to remember for the A Team, under manager Andy Sto-rey, as they finished as Aldershot & District Football League Senior Division champions, winning 15 of their 16 league games and ending the cam-paign 15 points ahead of their nearest rivals.

It wasn’t the easiest season for our Reserve Team under managers Ricky Hogsden and Neil Lancaster, but they finished in a creditable mid-table posi-tion. Our two veterans teams in the Farnham & District Sunday Football League did well too, the Row 1st XI in Division One finishing top, while in Divi-sion Two Row United secured the third spot and were winners of the Challenge Cup, defeating Ashridge Park Veterans

6-2 in the final. Our very young Youth Team play-ing in the U18 Al-lied Counties Youth League worked hard and showed excellent promise. They ended the season in the bot-tom spot but that wasn't due to any lack of effort on the part of the boys. It was a re-

building phase for our youth team last term and that’s set to continue now under the reigns of new manager Tom-my Ashby. The final league tables are included in the following pages (see pages 42/43 for Reserves, A Team, Veterans & Youth). [KOB]
