HARTLEY WINTNEY FC HISTORY

Hartley Wintney Football Club History Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in the North Hampshire village of Hartley Wintney in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs, the facilities not quite being up to today's standard, with only a horse trough or the pond to remove the heavy mud from a sub-standard pitch. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' comes from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. In 1953, the club moved to its present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, an influx of players under new manager Glynn Howell put the club firmly on the local football map. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League (previously Surrey Senior League). After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford, and once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in man-agement, they gained trophies including the League Title (1982-1983) and Runners Up (1981-1982), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (1980-1981), and George Allen Cup Win-ners (1981-1982). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup (1982-1983) and Al-dershot Senior Cup (1981-1982). The club gained promotion from Division One of the Combined Counties League in 2007-08 under manager Mike Scott, but 08-09 began poorly and, despite a change of management, the season ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under the manage-ment team of Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied in 09-10, finishing 5th in CCL Div. 1, and 7th in season 10-11 under manager Louis King after Pete Gray had stepped down for family reasons. The 2011-12 season under manager Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr was a notable one for the club as they again achieved promotion to the Com-bined Counties League Premier Division, as well as having a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round. However, end-of-season celebrations were damp-ened when the coaching staff left to join Thatcham Town. The entire squad bar two players departed, so new manager Dave Tuttle was faced with the task of rebuilding a squad competitive enough for the CCL Premier. A string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-Hartley player, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position already deep into the 2012-13 season. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players from Tuttle's squad, and Ben,

with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by

this time with Hartley set well adrift at the bottom of the table. The introduction of a

talented group of players restored the spirit around the club, and in what became

known as the club's 'Great Escape' season, Hartley Wintney's place in the CCL Premier

was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season.

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC HISTORY

Ben further strengthened the squad for 2013-14, with Steve Saunders and player/coach Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were notable wins in the FA Cup on a run that took the club to the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in its history. The cup run took its toll on league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the Premier Division.

After a comfortable 9th place finish in 2014-15, Ben Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed Joint First Team Managers, alongside coaches Joe Lawler and Luke Tuffs. With strong additions to the playing squad, it was an eventful 2015-16 season. After a memorable 1-0 win away at Southern League Mer-thyr Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, Hartley took Conference South Eastbourne Borough to the wire, losing out to an injury time winner. In the FA Vase, a longstanding club record was broken by reaching the 5th Round Proper played in front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane against the eventual finalists, Hereford FC. And de-spite the cup commitments, the club topped the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the 2015-16 league title. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with huge challenges on and off the pitch - to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the necessary ground improvements to take advantage of any second op-portunity for promotion - the 2016-17 season was perhaps the club's best yet, topping the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reaching the semi-finals of the Hampshire senior county cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and securing the required ground grading to allow the club to take its place in The Evo-Stik (Southern) League South; the first time in its history that the club has made it to Step 4 of the English football pyramid. To top off a wonderful 2016-17 season, our young Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Midweek Floodlit Cup, winning on penalties against a strong Aldershot Town U18. Hartley Wintney FC has come a long way, from 'village side' in every sense of the term, to today's 7 days a week modern football club. The football club has established a clear line of progression for young players with the establishment of an U18 Youth setup, currently playing in the Allied Counties Youth League, a Reserve team playing in the Suburban League, and an A Team playing in the Aldershot & District Football League. WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC

ALDERSHOT DIVISIONAL FA SENIOR INVITATION CUP

Hartley Wintney v

Farnham Town Kick Off: 7.30pm

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome to the Memorial Ground Hartley Wintney for this Aldershot Divisional Foot-ball Association Senior Cup semi-final tie against Farnham Town. To all their players, officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome and hope you enjoy your short stay with us here at Hartley Wintney. Tonight is a welcome distraction from the intensity of the league and one which the team are relishing. We made the final last year when we were second best against neighbours Fleet Town (who we face this Thursday in the Hart Classico part 2) I’m sure the management will be trying to go one better this season. Farnham are an old established club and are no strangers to us. Over the years we have shared a healthy rivalry. They have an im-pressive history which boasts the following:

Combined Counties League Premier Division champions 1990–91, 1991–92 Division One champions 2006–07 Challenge Cup winners 1991–92, 1995–96, 2015–16 Elite Cup winners 1991–92 Surrey Senior League Champions 1965–66, 1966–67, 1967–68 Surrey Intermediate League Champions

1929–30, 1930–31 Surrey Junior Cup Winners 1945–46[8]

Winning the CCFL League twice in the early 90s they were denied promotion due to the onerous ground grading requirements. If I

recall correctly a number of their players left to join the phoenix Aldershot Town FC setting the Shots on the road to recovery following the demise of the old Aldershot FC. Farnham are currently in a transitional phase having appointed a new management set up and with a degree of uncertainty in respect of their tenure at the Memorial Ground times are to say the least inter-esting. At present Farnham find themselves lan-guishing in 21st place in the league. We wish them well in their remaining games.

Games are now coming thick and fast for the Row. We are back in action this Thurs-day at home to Fleet followed by a trip to Ashford Town on Saturday. The following Tuesday we face the trek to Kempston Rov-ers before completing our league campaign at home to a recently resurgent Aylesbury United.

We will know soon whether we have achieved a slot in the play off places. What-ever the outcome, what a fabulous season we have had, one I am proud to say that I have enjoyed immensely. The team really are a special group as too are you the sup-porters..

Cheer the boys on tonight as we aim for a place in the final.

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS WHAT THE PAPERS SAID: UXBRIDGE

A stylish second half performance gave Hart-ley Wintney victory; with Nic Ciardini grab-bing a hat trick. Barring a mathematical mira-cle, this now means that the Row have reached the play-off stage in the Division and are still very much in the hunt for an auto-matic promotion slot. Cole Brown created a couple of early chances for Uxbridge with runs down the left wing. His crosses found Maguire and Kearney who were unable to convert. It was Hartley who struck first on 11 minutes. A corner from Dean Stow found the head of Liam Eagle and his flick on was rifled home by Nic Ciardini. On 43 minutes Jake Baxter did well to set up Ciardini and the striker saw his effort saved by Paul McCarthy in the Uxbridge goal. Half Time: HARTLEY WINTNEY 1 UXBRIDGE 0 The Row took a firm grip on the game after the break and turned on the style. On 49 minutes, a Dean Stow cross was almost con-verted by Nic Ciardini and Jake Baxter. On 51 minutes, a through ball allowed Josh Webb space on the left and the midfielder's cross was converted by Nic Ciardini from close range. Jake Baxter created space for himself coming in from the left on 56 minutes and was un-lucky to see his shot over McCarthy go past the post. Two minutes later, a slick move involving Dean Stow and Paul Hodges gave Jack French a chance. The midfielder's effort went just past the post. On 60 minutes Hartley added a third. A 30 yard pass from the left wing by James Ten-nant allowed Nic Ciardini a clear run in on goal and the striker dinked the ball over the advancing McCarthy to increase the Row lead. Hartley were threatening to run riot, and after some pressure added a fourth on 67

minutes. Jake Baxter chased a long pass and caught the ball on the byline. As he attempt-ed to round a retreating defender, he was fouled and a penalty kick awarded. Dean Stow made no mistake from the spot. (4-0)

Uxbridge responded and on 74 minutes Dyl-an Kearney created space for a shot which was saved by a well positioned Paul Strudley. Hartley themselves responded to that when, two minutes later, Nick Hutchings and Ty Smith combined well, resulting in the latter's snap shot bringing out a save from McCarthy. Late on, Dean Stow tried his luck from dis-tance and was unlucky to see his effort skim the top of the crossbar. [D Graham] FULL TIME: HARTLEY WINTNEY 4 UXBRIDGE 0 After the game, David spoke to Dan Brown-lie. "In the first half we were not able to get for-ward as often as we would have liked. Each department played well but not quite so well as a complete unit. "It was a really good second half perfor-mance by the team," Dan continued. "Great to see Nic Ciardini score a hat trick, and Josh Webb did not put a foot wrong in midfield." "At this stage of the season the three points are the priority. However, it was pleasing to see such a professional display from the team; especially in the second half. Another pleasing aspect was the fact that, for the first time this season, we have kept back-to-back clean sheets. "We are in the play-offs but definitely not out of the automatic promotion race yet, with several of the other top teams still to play one another."

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS WHAT THE FANS SAID: UXBRIDGE

A strong second half performance after a slightly indifferent first half when we seemed to be playing too frantically at times, per-haps a little edgy and wanting to 'get the job done' too quickly. The visitors' only real threat was down the left wing, where Cole Brown impressed and Dean Stow was given an unusually torrid time - I felt we needed to double up on him but we didn't and Brown re-mained a threat for the whole of the first half. We seemed to stifle the supply to him in the second half, so well done to the manage-ment and the boys for that. Solid performances at the centre of defence from Liam and Jack Ball, and I thought Nick Hutchings had a very assured game, as he did against Thame; great timing to have Nick back fit at this stage. Josh Webb had an ex-cellent second half, and of course Nic

Ciardini's hat trick earned him a deserved MOTM and he finished off some fine moves in style. Got to mention JT with another superb 30 yard pass for our third. The second goal settled us and after that we looked much

more like our usual selves, and were even able to go down a gear or two towards the end. A good effort from the boys at the start of a very busy week, with two local derbies; the Aldershot & District cup semi-final coming up

on Tuesday night at home to Farnham Town, and then the twice postponed league match at home to a reinforced Fleet Town. Then what is sure to be a hugely tough away game at Ashford, who always seem to want to prove a point against us (especially after our inability to go up that season handed them the slot!). KOB

Another convincing home win, the seventh on the trot, and no goals against which adds up to the fact we have the best home record in the league which cannot be bad in our first season in step 4. As usual we did not start with a great deal of conviction although we took the lead when a header from Liam was swept in by Nic, be-cause Uxbridge's left winger Cole Brown was a handful as he went on some dazzling runs and gave Stowie a torrid time as four or five times he played the ball into our box which was either fortunately blocked or miscued by the opposition forwards and we had to hang on sometimes. Second half was a different ball game as we played with much more rythmn and turned

up the heat and it was no surprise when Nic scored his second from a great run by Josh and then got his third with a nice little lob over the keeper from another great pass from JT. Having done his job he then retired to the dugout for a well earned rest. The game was all over by then and the lads just sauntered through the last 20 odd minutes saving their energy for next Thursday's game against a revitalised Fleet side. Lets get a big crowd for that night and roar the lads home. UP THE ROW!

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS FARNHAM TOWN HISTORY

Farnham Town Football Club is a senior level football club based In Farnham, Surrey, Eng-land. Established in 1906 through the merging of Farnham Bungs (the Farnham Brewery) and the Farnham Star. The club was one of the founder members of the London Spartan League in 1975. They reached the Fourth Round of the FA Vase in the 1976-77 season. At the end of the 1979/80 season Farnham Town left the London Spartan League and ap-plied to the Combined Counties League, their application was accepted and they finished 4th in their first season. The 1986/87 season saw Farnham take second place to Ash United in the league campaign. The glory days finally arrived in the 1990/91 season when the club won the league title. In the 1991/92 season, the Town got a clean sweep of the major tro-phies by winning the Combined Counties Premier League, the Dan Air Elite Cup and the Dan Air Challenge Cup. Having won the league, the club applied and were accepted to the Diadora League, however funds for neces-sary ground improvements could not be gen-erated which resulted in the club not having a league to play in for the 1992/93 season. in 1993/94 Farnham Town were accepted back into the Combined Counties League where they continue to ply their trade. From 1995-1998 Farnham finished in the top six of the Premier Division for three consecutive seasons, in 1998-99 they finished in 13th posi-tion, then 10th in 1999-2000 before suffering relegation from the Premier Division in 2000-2001 season. They bounced straight back the following season but then endured four tough seasons back in the Premier Division, with bottom four finishes every season culminating in relegation back down to Division One in 2005-2006. Again, the club bounced straight back and in 2006-2007 they won the Division One title under the guidance of Barry Bridger, but were denied promotion due to the Memo-

rial Ground not meeting the desired grading by the league. The club then spent another four seasons in Combined Counties Division One. Farnham gained promotion from Combined Counties Division One in the 2010-2011season after finishing second behind Worcester Park. In Paul Tanner’s first season at the helm he gained automatic promotion back to the Premier Division at the first attempt, which after only retaining four members of the side from the previous year’s squad - who finished mid-table, was quite an achievement. Paul Tanner’s side also won the Combined Counties Fair Play Award for 2010-2011 after going the whole season without having a man sent off, a record to be proud of. In a very successful year for the club on the whole, Dean Nelson’s re-serve side finished second behind Mole Valley in the Combined Counties Reserve Division, improving on fourth position the previous season. Farnham Ladies also finished second in their respective league to cap quite a re-markable season in Geoff Chapple’s final sea-son as Chairman. In 2011, Ray Bridger took over as chairman from Geoff Chapple. The 2015/16 season saw the club lift the Cher-ry Red Records Premier Challenge Cup whilst also reaching the final of the Aldershot FA Senior Cup The 2017/2018 season has so far seen a good FA Vase run, defeating higher league opposi-tion in the County Cup and a to be arranged appearance in the semi-final of the Aldershot FA Senior Cup but league form has been disap-pointing and seen the club in a season long relegation battle. Long serving manager, Paul Tanner, resigned in February and has been replaced by Paul Bonner with Andy Sharratt as his assistant as The Town look to preserve their Premier Division status

The Combined Counties League has provided another runway winner this season with Westfield securing the title last week. Our congratulations go to all at Westfield. Exciting times ahead as they prepare to make their debut at Step 4 next season. I believe that there are another two places for promotion this season due to the impending FA restruc-turing. Bedfont Sports & Sutton Common Rovers look to have filled these slots and to both those sides too we offer our congratulations. Very well done all. At the foot of the table Epsom & Ewell and Farnham are battling it out to avoid being

basement boys.

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS EAST DIVISION ROUND UP

The Evo-Stik League South East title race is still wide open after the top four all won on Saturday, leaving just four points separating them. Beaconsfield Town slipped into top spot on Thursday and remain a point ahead after winning 4-2 at Moneyfields. Jerome Eccleston and Tony Mendy gave Town a two-goal lead by the 16th minute, with Joe Briggs reducing the arrears in the 23rd mi-nute. Kezie Ibe made it 3-1 in the 34th mi-nute, only for Sam Pearce to pull Moneys back into the game 10 minutes after the break. But a Lee Barney goal in stoppage time settled the game in Beaconsfield`s fa-vour.

Second-placed AFC Rushden & Diamonds were looking to get back on track after four successive draws. A terrific crowd of 626 on a `pay what you want` day saw them ease to a 4-1 win against Aylesbury United, leading 2-0 at the break through Ryan Robbins and Spencer Weir-Daley. A Liam Dolman own goal gave the Ducks hope in the 63rd mi-nute, but Joe Curtis on 75 minutes and Tom Lorraine 2 minutes from time sealed a com-fortable win for the hosts.

Hayes & Yeading United have only two games left so need a massive shift of form to see them take an automatic spot, although a 6-1 home win over Egham Town won`t do their chances any harm. Manny Duku bagged a brace, Tommy Smith, Sahr Kabba, Spyros Mentis and Duncan Culley singles, with Mitch Wiseman having equalised for the Sarnies in the 31st minute.

Hartley Wintney are still in with an outside chance and have four games left and trail by four points after a 4-0 home win over Ux-

bridge, courtesy of a Nic Ciardini hat-trick and one from Dean Stow from the spot.

AFC Dunstable and Cambridge City occupy the other play-off spots but shared a 2-2 draw at Creasey Park in which the home side led 2-0 through BJ Christie and Leon Cash-man by the 16th minute. Ryan Sharman re-duced the deficit on 71 minutes and then 8 minutes into time added on at the end of the game James Hall hauled City level.

Chalfont St Peter still have a chance of catching the top six, but a 1-1 draw at home to Kempston Rovers didn`t help their hopes as they are five points behind City with four games to go. They almost got nothing from the game though as Josh Crawley gave the Walnut Boys the lead with only 9 minutes to go before George Fenton rescued the Saints in stoppage time.

Who goes down is still, remarkably, open – just! Arlesey Town`s 3-2 defeat at home to Hanwell Town leaves them 15 points behind Barton Rovers with 18 points left to play for. Arlesey led 2-0 as well, thanks to Keanu Wil-liams and Ashley Farooqui by the 32nd mi-nute, but crumbled after Calum Duffy pulled one back 18 minutes from time, conceding two more from Dan Fleming and Goldy Capela. Barton suffered a 5-2 defeat at Thame United, whose Lynton Goss grabbed a hat-trick and Dan West a brace – Andrew Phillips and Michael Gyasi replying.

Elsewhere, Brad Wilson`s 9th minute penal-ty earned Fleet Town the points at Calthorpe Park against Northwood.

WEST DIVISION ROUND UP MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS

Taunton Town had already been anointed as champions of the Evo-Stik League South West ahead of Saturday`s matches, so it`s who joins them in the Premier next season and who goes down where the focus of attention lay. Salisbury FC hold second spot and have a five-point advantage over third-placed Bristol Manor Farm and seven over fourth-placed Wimborne Town after Satur-day`s results. Steve Claridge`s Whites won 1-0 at Yarnton Road against Kidlington, cour-tesy of a 69th minute penalty from Owen Howe after he had been brought down in the box. Manor Farm had a more compre-hensive 5-1 win over second-bottom Barn-staple Town at The Creek – a result which means Barum are still not safe from finish-ing bottom. Dean Stamp gave Farm an early 7th minute lead that Nathan Cooper lev-elled 4 minutes later, only for Jordan Metters to send the home side into the break in front with a second a minute be-fore the whistle. A Kyle Holly spot-kick on 71 minutes settled the game, with Metters adding his second 7 minutes later and Stamp doing likewise on 81 minutes.A crowd of 391 at The W+S Stadium saw Wim-borne share a 1-1 draw with champions Taunton. Nuno Felix gave the Peacocks a 20th minute lead that Matt Oldring levelled just 9 minutes later. Evesham United and Swindon Supermarine hold the remaining top six spots, but down to Bideford AFC in tenth – as they have six games still left to play – still have a shot at the play-off plac-es.Winchester City are just outside that batch of clubs but held `Marine to a 1-1 draw at WebbsWood Stadium where Rob Carr equalised for City 8 minutes from time after the hosts had led through Joe Selman`s 29th minute effort. Evesham kept Bishop

Cleeve at the foot of the table, eight points behind Barnstaple with two games in hand, after winning 2-1 at the Spiers & Hartwell Jubilee Stadium. It certainly wasn`t easy for United as they trailed from the 9th minute to a Jack Watts goal until just before the hour-mark when they struck twice in 3 minutes from Archie Haskayne and Adam Mann.Didcot Town are two points behind the top six but were held to a 0-0 draw at the Loop Meadow by an AFC Totton outfit who really required all three points to stay in the race as they have only three games left. The same could be said for Cirencester Town who, despite a 2-1 win at Eynsham Hall Park Sports Ground against North Leigh, are level on points with Didcot but with only three matches to go. After Brad Chambers had given North Leigh a 16th minute lead, Alan Griffin after 33 minutes and a Matt Sysum own goal on 66 minutes won it for Ciren. Bideford remain in contention, albeit with a very busy schedule ahead, after beating Paulton Rovers 2-1 at The Sports Ground. And this was yet another game where the losers led through a 40th minute Matt Tippins goal before Craig Allan 5 minutes after the break and Kevin Squire 8 minutes later turned the game in the Devo-nians` favour.Elsewhere, a Nick Humphreys goal on 66 minutes sealed Shortwood Unit-ed`s home win over Larkhall Athletic, and Richard Greaves and Dan MacDonald both bagged braces as Cinderford Town edged out Mangotsfield United by the odd goal in seven – Kye Simpson also netting twice for the visitors.

Jamie Price put Slimbridge in front at Yate Town in the 15th minute, but Adam Price restored parity 14 minutes from time.
