HARTLEY WINTNEY FC HISTORY

Hartley Wintney Football Club History Hartley Wintney Football Club was founded in the North Hampshire village of Hartley Wintney in 1897 and played in an area adjacent to the village's golf and cricket clubs, the facilities not quite being up to today's standard, with only a horse trough or the pond to remove the heavy mud from a sub-standard pitch. The Club's nickname of 'The Row' comes from 'Hartley Row', a former hamlet within Hartley Wintney. In 1953, the club moved to its present ground in Green Lane, known as 'The Memorial Ground'. A pavilion was erected and the team played in the Basingstoke League and, later, in the Aldershot League. In 1973, an influx of players under new manager Glynn Howell put the club firmly on the local football map. In his six year reign, the team won the Aldershot Senior League three times in succession, and the Aldershot Senior Cup. After several seasons in the Aldershot Senior League, Hartley were admitted to the Combined Counties League (previously Surrey Senior League). After the first couple of seasons and two changes of management, the club appointed Ian Bedford, and once again an influx of senior players brought Hartley success. Within his three years in man-agement, they gained trophies including the League Title (1982-1983) and Runners Up (1981-1982), Aldershot Senior Cup Winners (1980-1981), and George Allen Cup Win-ners (1981-1982). They were also Runners Up in the League Cup (1982-1983) and Al-dershot Senior Cup (1981-1982). The club gained promotion from Division One of the Combined Counties League in 2007-08 under manager Mike Scott, but 08-09 began poorly and, despite a change of management, the season ended in relegation by a narrow margin. Under the manage-ment team of Pete Gray and John Condon, the first team rallied in 09-10, finishing 5th in CCL Div 1, and 7th in season 10-11 under manager Louis King after Pete Gray had stepped down for family reasons. The 2011-12 season under manager Neville Roach, Assistant Mick Wollen and Coach Scott Tarr was a notable one for the club as they again achieved promotion to the Com-bined Counties League Premier Division, as well as having a fine FA Cup run that took them to the Third Qualifying Round. However, end-of-season celebrations were damp-ened when the coaching staff left to join Thatcham Town. The entire squad bar two players departed, so new manager Dave Tuttle was faced with the task of rebuilding a squad competitive enough for the CCL Premier. A string of poor results led to a second change in management in less than 4 months, with 24 year-old ex-Hartley player, Ben Dillon, given his first managerial position already deep into the 2012-13 season. Once again there was an almost total outflow of players from Tuttle's squad, and Ben,

with assistants Jason Minton and Joe Lawler, set about rebuilding the squad, but by

this time with Hartley set well adrift at the bottom of the table. The introduction of a

talented group of players restored the spirit around the club, and in what became

known as the club's 'Great Escape' season, Hartley Wintney's place in the CCL Premier

was secured against all the odds after a truly remarkable second half of the season.

HARTLEY WINTNEY FC HISTORY

Ben further strengthened the squad for 2013-14, with Steve Saunders and player/coach Dan Brownlie brought in to the coaching setup alongside Jason and Joe. The season started well and there were notable wins in the FA Cup on a run that took the club to the 4th Qualifying Round for the first time in its history. The cup run took its toll on league form but the club finished a creditable 7th in the Premier Division.

After a comfortable 9th place finish in 2014-15, Ben Dillon stepped down and Dan Brownlie and Anthony Millerick were appointed Joint First Team Managers, alongside coaches Joe Lawler and Luke Tuffs. With strong additions to the playing squad, it was an eventful 2015-16 season. After a memorable 1-0 win away at Southern League Mer-thyr Town in the 2nd Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, Hartley took Conference South Eastbourne Borough to the wire, losing out to an injury time winner. In the FA Vase, a longstanding club record was broken by reaching the 5th Round Proper played in front of a sell-out 1,300 at Green Lane against the eventual finalists, Hereford FC. And de-spite the cup commitments, the club topped the CCL Premier Division for most of the season and claimed the 2015-16 league title. Promotion, however, was denied due to ground grading issues. Faced with huge challenges on and off the pitch - to achieve back-to-back title wins and put in place the necessary ground improvements to take advantage of any second op-portunity for promotion - the 2016-17 season was perhaps the club's best yet, topping the Combined Counties League Premier Division for the entire season, reaching the semi-finals of the Hampshire senior county cup and the final of the Aldershot Senior Cup, and securing the required ground grading to allow the club to take its place in The Evo-Stik (Southern) League South; the first time in its history that the club has made it to Step 4 of the English football pyramid. To top off a wonderful 2016-17 season, our young Youth team won the Hampshire FA Youth Midweek Floodlit Cup, winning on penalties against a strong Aldershot Town U18. Hartley Wintney FC has come a long way, from 'village side' in every sense of the term, to today's 7 days a week modern football club. The football club has established a clear line of progression for young players with the establishment of an U18 Youth setup, currently playing in the Allied Counties Youth League, a Reserve team playing in the Suburban League, and an A Team playing in the Aldershot & District Football League. WELCOME TO HARTLEY WINTNEY FC

Good evening ladies and gentlemen and welcome

to the Memorial Ground Hartley Wintney for this

Big Free Bet Challenge Cup 2nd Round Tie. Our visi-

tors this evening are Marlow. To all their players,

officials and supporters we extend a warm welcome

and hope you enjoy your short stay with us here at

Hartley Wintney.

Our visitors progressed to this round courtesy of a 4

-2 home victory over Aylesbury Utd at the beginning

of October. Hartley you may recall triumphed 6-1

over Farnborough FC.

Marlow are no strangers to us as they were the first

team to inflict a defeat on the Row in this our inau-

gural season at Step 4. The game at Marlow on

August Bank Holiday Monday saw our visitor’s run

out comfortable 3 nil winners. I’m sure we will be

looking to put that right tonight. It promises to be a

good cup tie.

On Saturday the first team made club history pro-

gressing to the 3rd Qualifying Round of the FA Tro-

phy with a 3 nil win over Gosport Borough. Two

goals from Josh Webb and 1 from Hodges did the

damage.

The Reserves were unable to filed a side due to

a number of late withdrawals . The A team

crashed out of the Hants Cup with a 7 nil de-

feat at QK Southampton

The first team fixtures are coming thick and

fast. For your diary here are the fixtures for the

rest of this month and the first week in Decem-

ber.

Saturday's Evo-Stik South, East Round-Up

With leaders Moneyfields on Buildbase FA Tro-

phy business on Saturday, second-placed Cam-

bridge City had the opportunity to pull to within

two points of the leaders But in the end, City will

be extremely pleased to have earned one point

as they trailed 3-2 going into stoppage time.

Ryan Sharman gave the visitors an early 9th

minute lead that Jahson Downes cancelled out

in the 26th minute. Sharman doubled his and

City`s tally to restore their advantage just before

half-time, only for former City player Allen Boss-

man on 70 minutes and Jordan Brown 12

minutes later to put Marlow 3-1 ahead. But City

had a 90th minute penalty to thank for rescuing

a game after he had been brought down – the

striker picking himself up to complete his hat-

trick and a secure point for his side. AFC

Rushden & Diamonds are now third and just a

point behind Cambridge after a more compre-

hensive 4-1 win at Honeycroft against Uxbridge.

Recent signing Ryan Robbins put Diamonds in

front after 10 minutes and a Tom Lorraine brace

in the 20th and then right on half-time took the

visitors three-up at the break. Left-back Sam

Brown added a fourth for the Northamptonshire

outfit on 67 minutes – and they even scored the

Reds` consolation when the unfortunate Callum

Westwood beat his own keeper in stoppage

time. Hayes & Yeading United maintained their

steady climb up the table and are now fifth after

recording a 2-1 home win over bottom-markers

Arlesey Town. Toby Little proved to be the

home side`s hero, bagging a brace in the 19th

and 26th minutes and surviving a comeback

when Tony Williams reduced the deficit after 65

minutes. AFC Dunstable dropped to seventh

after losing 1-0 at mid-table Chalfont St Peter.

Ben Ward-Cochrane`s 66th minute effort even-

tually proved enough for the Saints. Fleet Town

pulled five points clear of Arlesey in third-

bottom spot after a 2-0 Calthorpe Park victory

over Aylesbury FC. After a goalless opening 45

minutes, Matt Bunyan broke the deadlock to

give Fleet a 56th minute lead that Luke Haskell

doubled 12 minutes from time. Barton Rovers

are level on points with Fleet but one place

better off after sharing a 1-1 Sharpenhoe Road

draw with a Northwood outfit who are now

eleventh. The Woods led through Jermaine

Osei`s goal immediately after half-time until 6

minutes from time when Rovers levelled from

the penalty spot, converted by Danny Watson.

Kempston Rovers and Egham Town are tenth

and ninth respectively after they shared a 2-2

Hillgrounds draw.

Saturday's Evo-Stik South, West Round-Up

It turned out to be a good day for Evo-Stik League South West leaders Taunton Town, despite them being involved in the Buildbase FA Trophy on Sat-urday. That`s because they still hold a five-point advantage at the top after the teams occupying second, third and fourth spot all failed to win. Second-placed Salisbury FC were surprisingly beaten 2-1 at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium by mid-table Larkhall Athletic. A crowd of 685 saw Stuart Green put the Whites ahead on the half-hour mark. But the turning point in the match came 9 minutes later when Salisbury had goal-keeper Charlie Searle red carded for bringing down Larkhall`s Cory Simpson. Midfielder Sam Roberts took over the gloves and saved the re-sulting free-kick. It was Simpson who equalised for the Larks 2 minutes before half-time when the Whites’ stand-in keeper fumbled, and Simpson slid the ball home. The White worked hard with ten-men in the second half, but were finally un-done 10 minutes from the end when sub George King fired a fine strike into the far corner of the net that would have beaten most keepers. Third-placed Bristol Manor Farm could have taken sec-ond spot then had they beaten a Didcot Town side who are gradually working their way up the table. But Manor Farm raced into a 2-0 lead with goals from Kyle Holly after 6 minutes and Dean Stamp half-an-hour later. Felipe Barcelos reduced the deficit from the spot 7 minutes after half-time, only for Stamp to net his second on 70 minutes to make it 3-1. A second Barcelos spot-kick reduced the arrears to one on 84 minutes and an 88th minute equaliser from Sam Elkins earned Diddy a point. Fourth-placed Swindon Supermarine also slipped up, losing 2-0 at Yate Town. It looked like heading for a 0-0 draw, until the 87th minute when Yate were awarded a penalty for handball and Steve Davies converted the resulting spot-kick for his first goal for the Bluebells. His second, a fine curling effort, sealed a good win for the home side 2 minutes later. Evesham United moved into fifth place after recording a 5-3 win at mid-table Slimbridge.

The goal fest started when Adam Mace gave the Swans an early 8th minute lead. Lewis Powell equalised a minute before half-time and then 11 minutes into the second period, Matt Liddiard put Evesham ahead. But Marley Thomas pulled Slim-bridge back on level terms 5 minutes later, only for Adam Mann to restore United`s advantage 2 minutes after that. Carl Brown made it 4-2 on 69 minutes and Powell`s second in the 87th minute stretched the visitors` advantage to three, alt-hough Max Harper-Emerson did reduce that by one a minute later. AFC Totton are sixth and Win-chester City seventh after both earned home wins on Saturday. The Stags beat second-bottom Man-gotsfield United 4-0 at the Testwood Stadium, thanks to goals from Jack Barker after 34 minutes and Craig Feeney right on half-time, and then Barker again 10 minutes after the interval and Charlie Gunson 11 minutes from the end. City were given a tough home test by bottom side Bishops Cleeve before edging a 2-1 win. Ollie Bai-ley gave Winchester a 13th minute lead. But they missed several opportunities to increase their advantage and were made to pay 12 minutes into the second half when Joe Bates pulled Cleeve back on level terms. And it looked as though the visi-tors were going to hold on for an unlikely point, until Bailey popped up with the City winner 4 minutes into stoppage time. Wimborne Town were the day`s other winners, 2-1 at the Corinium Stadium against Cirencester Town. Billy Maybury gave the Magpies a 20th minute lead that Ellis Dunton eventually cancelled out 15 minutes from time. But this game also had a late twist when Toby Holmes grabbed Wimborne`s winner as add-ed time approached. Bideford AFC and Cinderford Town shared a 2-2 draw in Devon in the other game. This match was another with late drama. The Foresters led 2-0 at half-time, thanks to an own goal from Craig Allan after 36 minutes and a Dan Clare effort a minute before the whistle.T he visitors held that advantage until the 85th minute when Sean Downing headed in a Billy Tucker cor-ner.In the 2nd minute of stoppage time, James Mayne headed in to earn Biddy a point

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS FANS FORUM: GOSPORT BOROUGH

Hartley v Gosport Borough

Post by Mick - 11-11-2017, 20:41

Success again in the FA Trophy fixture this afternoon. Tremendous respect to the Gosport fans for their tremendous vocal support throughout, and even after the final whistle. They were well organised and showed us just how to create a match day atmosphere despite a real tough season for them. We Hartley fans would do well to learn from them even though we back our squad to the hilt in our individual ways. Grouping together with scarves and flags en masse and a wide rep-ertoire of songs is very effective.

Response by KOB

Agreed Mick, the 'Boro fans were a credit to their club. I managed not to lose my voice while doing my best to match their vocal output, especially with them right next to me in the first half! We tend to group to-gether more at away games, I guess because at home we all have our favourite spots from which to watch the game, and you're right, the vocal and visual impact is greater. As for the game, it was a slightly strange feeling for me at the end. Very happy with the win of course, but a certain feeling of anti-climax, maybe just because it wasn't the 'battle of Hampshire' we were half ex-pecting. The boys played well but gave me a feeling of being in 'cruise control' at times, not fully 'on it'. But to be fair, that was enough to cruise us into the next round, and each of the three goals was well executed.

Josh Webb's two goals were excellent, showing his ability to strike the ball so clean-ly for the first, and then delicately curled for the second - superb and very well deserved as Josh's performances for us have just got better and better and - with Jonah out for so long - he has turned into a real asset with perfect timing. Got a well deserved MOTM. Captain Paul Hodges ran Josh close for MOTM for me. He gave the 'Boro defenders hell, and several times chased back to nick the ball off their midfielders - terrific workrate and a lovely finish for his goal which sealed it. Biggest positive for me was that we can see that goals can come from almost any one of our players. Jake netted four last week, but this week he was happy to leave it to Josh to step up :-) It was anoth-er history-making day for the club, and obvi-ously beating any club from the level above us is very satisfying, but we have to keep it in context. They gave it their all but that's a young 'Boro side struggling to develop fast enough to keep themselves in the Premier, while we're a well oiled team with experi-ence, and we shouldn't pretend we were the underdogs in that one yesterday. We have some massive league games coming up that will test us far, far more. And the next round is likely to be a very different test too, who-ever we get, but it's great to be in the hat, well done boys!

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS MARLOW HISTORY

It was on November 22nd 1870 at the Com-pleat Angler Hotel on the banks of the Thames that Great Marlow Football Club was formed and so began the history of one of the oldest clubs in the country. In the last century the Club was a major force in the game and as one of the original entrants in the first F.A Cup competition in 1871/72 con-tributed a share of the £25 that bought the first trophy. In the very first year of the com-petition a certain Cuthbert Ottaway turned out for Marlow and just a year later he was to captain the national side against Scotland in the first ever officially recognised interna-tional match. Marlow have the unique distinction of being the only club to have applied for entry to every competition since its inception alt-hough they were unable to compete once in the 1910/11 season. In 1882 they reached the semi-finals where they lost out to even-tual winners Old Etonians 0-5 at the Oval. Two Amateur Cup semi-finals and a host of Berks & Bucks Senior Cup wins were among many honours won in this golden age. In 1894 Marlow rejected the opportunity to join the newly-formed Southern League in order to retain their amateur status and al-lowed Tottenham Hotspur to begin their climb to the top flight by taking their place The Club's ground until 1919 was Crown

Meadow, now the Riley Recreational

Ground. An enforced move to the Star Mead-

ow (which was unfenced) and the worsening

financial situation resulted in the need to

play in a more local competition than the

Great Western Suburban League and Marlow

joined the Reading and District League. This

was a dark period for the Club and worse

was to come when the Club's long-serving

Honorary Secretary Alfred Davis, who had

held office at the Club since 1891, died in

1924. It was decided that a fitting memorial

to him would be to provide a permanent

home for Marlow F.C. An appeal proved to

be very successful and the “Alfred Davis Me-

morial Ground” saw its first game in 1928.

The picturesque grandstand dates from

1930’s and followed the establishment of an

Association who issued Share Certificates in

connection with a Building Fund and was

built to celebrate the Club's revival and the

Spartan League Division Two championship.

Apart from a war-time break Marlow contin-

ued in the Spartan League until 1965 when

entry was gained to the Athenian League

Division Two. Promotion to Division One was

secured in season 1970/71. Here Marlow

remained until 1984 when they joined the

Isthmian League. Having finished bottom of

Division Two in 1985 the appointment of

Mike Keen as Manager heralded a rapid rise

in status. Promotion to Division One came

the very next season and then after just one

season in Division One the championship

was won after a two horse race with Grays

Athletic and along with it promotion to the

Premier Division.

Here Marlow found things much tougher and

Christmas arrived without a win and from a

position at the foot of the table however a

late season Houdini act saw them escape and

secure their new-found status.

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS MARLOW HISTORY

When Keen left his assistant Dave Russell took over and brought in Laurie Craker as Coach. Under them good times returned and the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup was won for the first time that century with a victory over local rivals Wycombe Wanderers and the F.A Cup First Round was reached, also for the first time that century, with an away tie at West Bromwich Albion the reward. Season 1992/93 saw even more F.A Cup success with progression this time to the Third Round and a tie with Tottenham Hotspur that was switched to White Hart Lane where almost 27000 saw the Blues give a very creditable performance. The Diadora (Isthmian) League Cup was won to finish the season on a high note by beating Molesey. 1993/94 must rate as the most successful ever with Marlow again reaching the First Round of the F.A Cup where a 0-2 home de-feat against Plymouth Argyle was featured on T.V, while in the league a highest-ever position of third was achieved. The Berks & Bucks Senior Cup was won again with a 1-0 win over local rivals Chesham Utd. to round off a highly memorable season. At the end of that season Russell and Craker

left for Slough Town and took several players

with them. A new squad and slow start left a

lot to do in the league and relegation fol-

lowed. In the F.A Cup things were very differ-

ent. The First Round saw Division Two table-

toppers Oxford Utd. defeated 2-0 at Oak

Tree Road and the Blues became the first

winners of the Littlewoods Pools' Giant Kill-

ers award. After another home victory over

Trophy holder's Woking secured a place in

the Third Round Proper once again and a trip

to Swindon Town, who had been in the

Premier League the season before, where

the home side were grateful to progress by a

2-0 scoreline.

Season 1995/96 saw a finish in in eighth spot

but the following one got off to a terrible

start from which the Club was never able to

recover – and despite victories over virtually

all the top sides, relegation was confirmed

on the last day of the season. Russell re-

turned for the following season and with him

high hopes but the season proved to be one

of under-achievement and a new team of

Graham Pritchard and Derek Sweetman took

over for 1998/99 and provided a period of

stability which saw finishes in mid-table. Fol-

lowing the departure of Pritchard just before

season 2001/02 Sweetman took over the

reins and his first game in charge saw the

capture of the Associate Members Trophy in

a final held over from the previous season.

The side finished the season in 9th position

in the league – the highest for some time –

before restructuring saw them move from

Division Two to the newly-formed Division

One North for season 2002/03 where an

11th place finish was achieved. In the F.A

Trophy they progressed to the Third Round

before going out at Dagenham & Redbridge.

Marlow again found themselves in new sur-

roundings the following season having been

moved to Division One South and although

inconsistent form saw them finish 16th in the

league they again had an excellent run in the

F.A Trophy which took them to the Fourth

Round for the first time in their history.

MILLERICK’S MUSIINGS MARLOW HISTORY

Several notable victories saw them through before a strong Tamworth outfit ended their run at Oak Tree Road. The reorganization of the non-league game saw them in different surroundings for the fourth time in four seasons with entry into the Southern League where they competed in the Western Division for season 2004/05 and finished in 13th spot. Kevin Stone had moved into the manager’s seat towards the end of the season and enjoyed a great run. 2005/06 and in the same league and in more familiar surround-ings seemed to suit the side and for most of the season they hovered around the play-off positions and eventually finished in 6th spot. A play-off spot was confirmed on the final day of the season and although a 1-2 defeat at Brackley Town followed the Club were pleased with the progress. Season 2006/07 in the South & West Division saw a successful run of results promise another play-off berth but a last day defeat at Win-chester City saw them fall just short whilst season 2007/08 was a little more disap-pointing with some very good results failing to offset a poor run around February/March with a final finish just outside the play-offs resulting. Season 2008/09 saw the Club moved yet again into the Midland Division and another inconsistent season followed finishing with a defeat to Windsor & Eton in the final of the Berks & Bucks Senior Cup at M.K Dons stadium. The following two seasons saw some good results against the top sides but indifferent ones against the lower teams and ended with mid-table finishes even though a bright start in 2010/11 saw them briefly at the top of the table. 2011/12 did not start at all badly but soon developed

into one where victories were very hard to come by and following a string of poor re-sults long-standing manager Stone left just after Christmas. Assistant Steve Croxford took over and although performances and results improved towards the end it was not enough to avoid relegation. Season 2012/13 found Marlow in in the Uhlsport Hellenic League with a new man-agement team headed by Mark Bartley eager to recapture some of the glories of the past and this they did, winning the league championship by a 16 point margin and scoring 123 goals in 36 games to return to the Southern League where the next two seasons saw them consolidate with finishes in and 17th and 11th positions respectively. For 2015/16 Marlow were moved once again – to the South & West division – which again meant increased travelling and associated costs and the loss of some key players and several local derbies, making life much more difficult than it really need-ed to be. In the circumstances a mid-table finish was achieved and a return to the Central Division for 2016/17 aided a finish in 4th place (on goal difference) and achieved a play-off place, with third-placed Barton Rovers running out 2-0 victors at their ground.
